Daytime Confidential #191: Thom Racina Interview

On today's show we have an Exclusive Interview with Thom Racina, the author and Emmy nominated former daytime writer responsible for General Hospital's Ice Princess storyline and Luke & Laura's wedding. We talk about what it was like to work during that groundbreaking time, his experiences as a writer under Gloria Monty and what it was like to write the scenes for Elizabeth Taylor's famous Helena Cassadine appearance.

After leaving General Hospital Racina moved to Days of Our Lives where he was responsible for creating the characters of Steve Johnson (aka Patch) and John Black and wrote the wedding of Bo and Hope.

We also talk about his experiences as Writer at Another World, what our Writers Strike today is like in comparison to what he went through while writing for the soaps, his personal knowledge of how Brad Pitt got his start, his advice for would be soap writers or aspiring authors, what he is doing now, and would he ever come back to daytime if asked.

We know you'll love today's show so put in your earbuds, turn on your ipod and enjoy.

OMG, guy this interview is one of the best I ever heard!

The anecdotes, the history, the fun and the depth of the interview, it was great! This is the kind of podcast that you have to listen to twice.

    It is that good!

A discussion away from the actors and/or fan base, about the industry and how it works!

    Riveting podcast!

My own conclusion, hire a good writers and let him write! And oh yay, bring new writers in to keep the juice going|

    AWESOME SHOW!!!!

This was a fantastic interview. Thom Racina is so funny and so knowledgeable (I will be the first in line to buy his memoirs!) I loved his honesty! And both of you guys asked fantastic questions!!

I’m so glad he debunked the myth of head writers getting residuals from creating new characters on soaps. I’ve heard that story for years, and just wasn’t sure if it was true or not, so I’m glad to finally found out.

Luke, you should have pitched your AW: Next Generation idea!

And I loved finding out more about you guys too (Luke lived in Canada?! Belinda’s son is an author?!) And I liked hearing about where your passions for soaps comes from…that would make a good forum topic too!

Thanks again for the great show!

    *still missing Lisa!

That was a great interview. I loved how Thom was open and honest about everything and had a lot of wonderful stories.
I’m going to read his books now.
Interesting to find out about how the whole Ice Princess storyline evolved.
And I hope that his Canadian show makes it to the US so we can all watch something that’s well written.
