HomeTVAll My ChildrenPratt In At All My Children, Esensten And Brown Out? Jamey Giddens May 5, 2008 30 Comments An inside source has revealed to Daytime Confidential rumors that Charles Pratt might assume the head writer reigns at All My Children in the near future just might prove true. According to the source, current AMC scribes James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten recently submitted a long-term story projection for the soap that was allegedly rejected by ABC Daytime frontman Brian Frons. Former General Hospital head writer Pratt, who left daytime to consult for such hit primetime shows as Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty, is reportedly pitching his own long term plans for the show and if the top brass at ABC daytime likes his work, Brown and Esensten are likely to be shown the door this summer. An additional rumor that is gaining steam has Gary Tomlin (One Life to Live) taking over as executive producer of AMC from Julie Hanan Carruthers, who allegedly would join ABC’s cable sibling SoapNet. 30 Responses gush900 May 5, 2008 If this is true this would be a great move for amc.Just a little backround on chuck pratt he was co head writer of gh with bob guza. The duo head writers crafted vanessa marcils brief but brilliant return to port charles. And pratt was ep and writer of my old time fave night time soap melrose place.Im praying pratt is the new head writer because this guy crafts great storys. And maybe he’ll just have dixie rise from her grave permanetly. Log in to Reply ABCJunky73 May 5, 2008 ABC DAYTIME ROCKS!!! I really hope this is true because AMC is in serious trouble and if Pratt and Tomlin take over as HW and EP, AMC will go back to having great storyline and ratings for them will really rise! (A little sidebar on Frons, I wonder if his job is in jepordy also,if he rejected Brown and Esensten’s storyline?) ABCJunky73 Log in to Reply Danielle May 5, 2008 If this is true, I will be pissed. Let’s remember Pratt had a love for the mob big time on GH and he only focused on 4 characters. One can only hope that by working on the other primetime shows he got the mob out of his system. Log in to Reply timepass May 5, 2008 For all AMC viewers sake, I really hope it is NOT true. Pratt is just like Guza, an uncreative writer, writing for a handful of people, not minding the history of the soap at all, and having only one or two tricks in his bag. You think your soap is in trouble, wait and let Pratt have a go at it and you will regret it! JMO! Why recycle proven bad writers, and not hire new talented one! Mind boggling! Log in to Reply binksfan999 May 5, 2008 Something needs to be done over at AMC. The ratings suck, the storylines are dull and boring, the same 6 people are on the show almost everyday, and most of the actors who were good, are gone. I’m not sure that bringing in new writers is the answer, but it certainly can’t get any worse than it is now. Log in to Reply Becca May 5, 2008 I cheered when Pratt left GH. I don’t wish him on AMC. Log in to Reply At50 May 5, 2008 I don’t think Esenstein and Brown are gonna be good for AMC in the longterm but I have mostly bad things about Pratt and haven’t come across too many people excited about Tomlin either. (quote)Why recycle proven bad writers, and not hire new talented one! Mind boggling!(quote) Frons has a history of rejecting writers with good reputations for writers with bad or mediocre reputations. It doesn’t seem to me that he is a very good judge of writing and storytelling. Log in to Reply Beth May 5, 2008 I think there’s a bit of the devil you know as opposed to the one you don’t know with this tidbit. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but am I right in saying that Esenstein and Brown had no daytime experience when they came in? As I recall, they wrote for Dynasty. Pratt does have the daytime experience here, and I think that’s what keeps him a hot commodity in the industry. Pratt is by no means perfect, but I think he helped at least keep Guza in check at GH. And I also think he was responsible for romance on the show, as opposed to now where it’s practically nonexistent. I’m not sure how he’ll do by himself, but I can see why he’d be considered for this gig. Frankly, I’m surprised he’d want to come back to daytime after the cushy gigs he’s had with Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty, but of course that may not be his choice to leave. Log in to Reply Luke Kerr May 5, 2008 Oh Esenstein and Brown have had daytime experience…If I’m not mistaken they’re the ones who created a clone of Reva on Guiding Light…something GL fans still bemoan. Log in to Reply Danielle May 5, 2008 Pratt is all about the mob that’s how downward spiral of GH started. He was writing for Carly, Sonny, Courtney & Jason and that’s it! He is just as bad as Guza is with the mob. Like I said I hope he got it out of his system doing the primetime shows. I just hope this rumor is not true at all and it’s a bad dream! Log in to Reply Soapsteve May 6, 2008 This would be a god send to AMC because i have no idea what really is going on over there. It also needs a new casting director. It seems like to me that anyone who walks in the door and is good looking they offer a job. It’s a shame what they did to AMC and i hope Pratt can come in and clean up the mess that has been filling up for a few years now. Log in to Reply THEBEST May 6, 2008 I think that Pratt would be good for the show. He didn’t make GH bad, Guza did, hence the fact that we’re still seeing mob stories and Sonny/Carly/Jason shoved down our throats daily. Anything is better than JHB & BE. JHC needs to be out, as well, so Tomlin will be a welcome change. AMC needs to be back. Hopefully, the new writers will make Dixie alive as a start. ***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\*** Log in to Reply tgable07 May 6, 2008 Yes Julie Hanan Craputhers(as I like to call her) needs to go! Log in to Reply THEBEST May 6, 2008 I swear, they need to take the AMC scrapbook and beat the hell out of Julie, Barbara & James. They were a great team on Port Charles. They would be great to come up with a primetime soap for Sci-Fi. ***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\*** Log in to Reply muze May 6, 2008 I don’t know what to make of this because i still can’t believe that the same creative team that was responsible for Stripper-Gate wrote the brilliant resurrection of Angie and Jessie. They keep adding star power to the show for nebulous reasons. Love Rebecca Budig, but her story is lame and she only came back because of the strike. Do I have high hopes for Ricky Paull Goldin? No, not based on the non-Angie/Jessie s/l, which are all completely uninteresting…it sort of reminds me of GL at this point, they have all these good actors in stories with little long-term potential and seemingly no long-term plan. I guess I don’t watch enough to understand the Greenlee/Aidan/Zach/Ryan/Annie/Kendall circle of hell or whatever you call the six-way hot mess. Give ABC one thing – they know their show sucks right now. That’s more than we can say for GL. (I repeat over and over again, WHAT WILL IT TAKE to dump the whole staff? Jamey, are you available? You’ll have to work for free since P&G just isn’t making enough money selling swiffer and tide to pay for more than your lunch. But I’m sure you can flesh out a two-year plan to restore the show to its former glory.) Log in to Reply THEBEST May 6, 2008 Actually, The Executive (Screw Up) Producer & Frons wrote the Angie & Jesse reunion at the train station. The rest of the story has been consulted on by Agnes Nixon, hence the reason that it’s actually good. ***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\*** Log in to Reply Danielle May 6, 2008 Now if only Agnes Nixon would consult on every storyline we would be in business and if she did, Pratt would not be able to use the mob for any reason she would put her foot down immediately! Yes Pratt was all about the mob, I know that for a fact , Guza at least writes some love in his stories but he is not much better. Log in to Reply DS9Sisko May 6, 2008 I like the mob, too! LOL “The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.” – Garak, Deep Space Nine Log in to Reply THEBEST May 6, 2008 Come on, Jamey. I like the mob, too, but it’s single-handedly destroying General Hospital. If there was as much mob as it was back in 93, I would be fine, but enough is enough. ***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\*** Log in to Reply sb_fan May 6, 2008 well said Jamey, I know if Jason leaves GH, I will too. Log in to Reply THEBEST May 6, 2008 I’m not knocking the mob, but it seems like the same stories are being told over & over with Sonny, Carly, & Jason. GH is HORRIBLE right now, hence the drop in it’s ratings. It’s no GL or AMC, but it’s pretty bad. I want love in the afternoon, not bullets & explosions daily. It’s too much violence and not enough romance. Guza needs to be shot down like a Quartermaine for playing favorites amongst the cast. GH has one of the best ensembles in daytime, but the mob doesn’t have to dominate the whole show. I don’t mind a shady mob story in the midst of stories featuring CORE characters. Every new character seems to be connected to the mob, and I’m sick of it. ***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\*** Log in to Reply DaytimeFan0001 May 7, 2008 i am all for change in soaps….this is a genre that is desperate for change. I don’t want to see any soap cancelled so I am all for changes…PLEASE start with GL! Log in to Reply muze May 7, 2008 Agnes Nixon is still a genius. Too bad she can’t be a daytime czar, like the baseball commisioner or something. She could suspend bad shows until they get their act together. I think GH is better than most soaps right now and I enjoy it. Where I quibble with the mob stuff is that it goes along with dumbing it down. Because if you watched The Sopranos, you know that the show was more about the times between violence than during the violence. In fact, there was almost never an all out mob war. One thing that bugs me about GH is that the women who fall for the mobsters only see the possibility of their kids being hurt as the biggest problem with being in love with a mobster. In reality, families are rarely touched. GH rarely allows the characters to explore the other giant problems with being married to the mob. I will never forget the sopronos episode where Tony’s wife Carmella, who had been growing more disenchanted with the violence, went to a psychologist alone. And he looked her straight in the eye and said “you are complicit in every illegal act your husband commits.” And he basically told her she had to make a choice, a clear bright-line choice. Stay with Tony and admit all his sins are yours, or leave. No grey area. Those women who are with Sonny also like the toys and perks of the lifestyle – it isn’t just about Sonny. It’s about willfully, routinely breaking the law and inflicting violence and mayhem on other people. But GH won’t go there because it’s trying to sell the lifestyle as…seductive. The entire premise of The Sopranos was that these are human beings, who we can feel compassion for and even root for, but they are ultimately sociopaths. And that’s straight from the mouth of the creator, David Chase. Log in to Reply THEBEST May 7, 2008 Well, maybe Chase needs to come on with a new co Head Writer to put GH back where it belongs. ***///Living In The World Of Soaps Since 1985\\\*** Log in to Reply THEBEST May 7, 2008 I wonder, if AMC gets a new EP (God willing), is the filming technique going to be scrapped? Log in to Reply Beth May 5, 2008 Okay, thanks for the correction. Honestly, it’s hard to believe they have any writing experience, let alone daytime writing experience, considering some of the excrement that’s wafted across our screens as of late! Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens May 6, 2008 LOL Not everyone dislikes the mob. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens May 6, 2008 GH is not being destroyed! LOL Ratings are down across the board, but GH usually has strong demos. GH is much, much better than most of daytime right now, save for One Life and B&B and has been consistently so. And the mob didnt start with Guza and Pratt or even with Luke and Laura, from what I read, the early days of the show saw the hospital a constant center for victims of mob related crimes. So Port Charles being a mob hub has been a part of the show for 40 years. Sure its moreso now, but at least GH has a niche to work with and an identity. You can’t say the same for AMC or OLTL. Y&R is in the toilet and although Days is rebuilding, it could still learn a lot from GH in my opinion. GH has taken HUGE strides to balance storylines out since the mid 2000s, but mob haters simply will not be happy until Jason, Sonny and Co. are out of the picture period and if the show does that, they will tick off one half their fanbase.
