HomeTVGossip GirlGossip Girl Author Hates Vanessa Luke Kerr October 17, 2008 Gossip Girl 18 Comments It’s official, I’m not the only one who loathes the Gossip Girl character Vanessa (Jessica Szohr). Even Gossip Girl author Cecily von Ziegesar doesn’t like the TV version of her creation. Check out this quote from an interview with People magazine. “I think Vanessa is one character they ruined,” she says. “In the book, she’s kick-ass and has a shaved head and wears lots of black. I think a lot of the readers who don’t usually read teen fiction identify with Vanessa,” Now I’ve never read the books, but to me Vanessa has always been the female weak link of Gossip Girl. Just as I believe Nate is the male weak link. What do you think? Do you like the character of Vanessa? Gossip Girl Author Hates Vanessa Hate Vanessa! (58%, 99 Votes) Love Vanessa! As far as I’m concerned they could call the show The Blair Waldorf Hour! ________________________ //**It’s the writing, stupid!**\\ Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens October 17, 2008 I’ve read the books and there are a LOT of differences, but they are both good products separately. It is very hard for a TV series to faithfully follow a book series, because unlike with books, the viewing audience is more reactive. Readers are more trusting to let the author take them on the journey. For instance, Dan and Serena don’t stay together long in the books at all and Dan eventually comes out as bisexual. I sincerely doubt they will be doing that now that Serena and Dan are their hottest couple. I am actually glad Vanessa isn’t as crazy looking as she is described in the books. Also Jenny is described as having ginormous boobs in the books and Serena’s brother is older, not younger, plus Chuck’s sexuality is also questionable in the books. Who knows, maybe they will explore more of that as the show goes on? Log in to Reply kerfuffles October 17, 2008 I’ve never read the books (I’m sometimes I’m embarrassed that I’m 36 and love the show as much as I do, so I definitely think I’m too long in the tooth for teen fiction), but I agree Vanessa is a snooze. She and Nate are perfect for eachother. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens October 17, 2008 Kerfuffles imagine a then-28-year-old man putting one up on the counter at Borders! LOL Of course I announced the first book was for my little sister, to which I was greeted with a "yeah right" look. Log in to Reply Meg October 17, 2008 I think its because she’s never really been developed as a character nor have they given her anything. Her relationship with nate was actually interesting and the actors have good chemistry. I really liked it. I think the reason people hate vanessa is that they do nothing with her. She should be tough since she lives on her own, supports herself give her more backstory and something to do other than sit in a coffee shop. Remember what they did with adriana and the bangs. Change something up and please give her something. I like the actress and I think the charater has great potential. As for the changes in the books, I think that some have been for the better and personally I think they can keep the essence of who vanessa is without changing her looks. Jenny doesn’t look the same. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens October 17, 2008 Vanessa is the one real teens probably could relate to the most and the actress is ten times better than that wooden statue who plays Serena. Blair vs. Vanessa is much more interesting than Blair vs. Serena. I mean really, who buys Serena EVER overtaking Blair? Log in to Reply season1217 October 17, 2008 OMG! When Blair changed the name of who Serena would like to have dinner with to the guy that she “killed”… I nearly bust a gut! But it looks like starting Monday we’ll be getting Blair vs. Vanessa. Maybe this is what it will take to give the character of Vanessa more spice and lead us to finding out more about her. Also, if those boys were so hellbent on getting revenge because of what Nate’s father did why come up w/ something so lame as to tie “Nate” up to a statue in his underwear?:? ________________________ //**It’s the writing, stupid!**\\ Log in to Reply hrfmom October 17, 2008 Jamey, how are the books? I am a 35 years old and I absolutely love the Twilight series…is it comparable? Isn’t there going to be a love triangle between Nate, Jenny and Vanessa this season? Blake Lively is starting to grow as an actress…she is not as snarky as Leighton but she is starting to come into her own. When your mom gave birth to you in jail, you are going to work your butt off on everything you do in life. Log in to Reply hrfmom October 17, 2008 By the way luke…I think we need to have a 3rd option for this poll. I do not hate hate vanessa but I also do not love vanessa. I honestly have not seen her do enough on the show to form an opinion. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens October 17, 2008 The books are very Sex and the City for teens. A bit darker and risky, but still funny. It has touches of Cruel Intentions. Recreational drug use, bisexuality, you name it. I think the TV show plays the comedy a bit much. Log in to Reply hrfmom October 17, 2008 They make the books I grew up reading (the sweet valley high series) sound like preschool books! I will have to check them out. Thanks for the info. Log in to Reply season1217 October 17, 2008 A love triangle for Nate, Jenny and Vanessa?! Good Lord! How about Jenny finish teething first before she starts snogging a boy a year away from college! This girl is only 15, so why is she dressing like she’s auditioning for a Robert Palmer video?! ________________________ //**It’s the writing, stupid!**\\ Log in to Reply hrfmom October 17, 2008 I thought her boobs were going to pop out of a dress she was wearing last week or the week before! I am just curious to see how Nate and Jen are going to hook up. I was kind of liking Chace Crawford as a boy toy! Jenny also needs to get rid of her bitchy bangs (am i allowed to use Luke’s term or did he copyright it?)! I really am not liking them on her! Log in to Reply podcastjunkie October 18, 2008 I voted I love Vanessa but thats because I like looking at her and it is hard for me to vote attractive looking women off of tv shows. Also Love or hate were the only choices given. I’ve been meaning to read the books as well as soon as my cash flow problem clears up. Log in to Reply ohwowreally October 20, 2008 i guess im in the minority here, but i absolutely love vanessa!!! she may not get the best material written for her but she’s def one of my faves. Log in to Reply Crystal_Ann October 24, 2008 I can’t believe the writers are going to waste valuable airtime for a Jenny/Nate/Vanessa triangle. At least the TPTB won’t have to worry about a Nate/Vanessa and Nate/Jenny fanwar, neither side appears to have enough fans to create one much less the hilarious vicious ones that happen when both sides have huge fan followings. I feel bad for Chace for having to kiss Taylor Momsen or having to do love scenes with her (if that happens). The girl is a 15 year old kid, it must feel creepy having to kiss her since he’s 23.
