DC #331: CBS and Days Questionable Casting
On today's CBS and Days of Our Lives edition of Daytime Confidential Luke, Mike and Jamey discuss the Thanksgiving episodes of As the World Turns, Guiding Light and The Young and the Restless. What they enjoyed and what they didn't.
Don Diamont has been "ousted" from The Young and the Restless and the guys share their reaction. The battle for Jabot is heating up and the guys couldn't be enjoying it more and Tuesday's episode has Jamey admitting he's enjoying Gloria while Mike grudgingly agrees the character is better than she used to be.
The casting department at Days of Our Lives is a head scratcher, but Jamey believes he knows why. The reasoning may be a bit of surprise.
All this and more on this post Thanksgiving episode.

I'm going to have disagree about Darin Brooks being a decent actor. I still can't believe the show let Blake Berris go in order to keep DB.

Its really sad to see the way that soaps are going "down hill!" I don't agree with the three days a week stuff five days the way its always has been. I have to say that I don't think that I've laughed so hard in a long long time! As always I have enjoyed the podcast and everyone on the show with two thumbs up for Jamie!

It's just too painful to watch Days right now. All the storylines suck and the actors all look like they are going through the motions. I just don't recognize this show anymore. Phillip and Melanie are just gross, Sami and Rafe are boring, EJ and Nicole are pathetic and annoying, there's no point in getting invested in John and Marlena, no Vets, Stefano being wasted AGAIN, and plot point after plot point.
Corday, Tomlin, and Higley all have a hand in this mess.

I agree that the ATWT Thanksgiving episode was not good. There was no fun to it or snark, it was just meh. Also, I am tired of Jack (and to a lesser degree, Janet).

You sure did. I still don't like her or her low life husband. I do think she's being used as she was intended, in the background making a mess of her and her boys' lives. Poor Michael and Lauren! Maybe Ashley will figure out who poisoned that face cream!

Well I guess GL has no hope according to you all. I still enjoyed hearing what you all said.

This three-day-a-week crap is the craziest thing I've heard...well, today. How in the hell would they expect to keep the viewers they have with that schedule? Who could or would remember it? And the other two days would be, what, reruns? Why do idiots who so clearly hate this genre work in it?
I'm very glad that ATWT is merely on the peripheral edge (and just barely) of my soap radar.

What I thought was stupid about the ATWT Thanksgiving episode was that Luke was drinking beer from his coffee mug but NOBODY (except Brian and Noah who already knew about the drinking) noticed it...
I did like all the family members calling in (Abigail, Ellie, Seth, Iva...). I also liked seeing the cast interact with each other. I wish they would do that more, because we saw Noah giving Meg a hug while they've never had a scene together. And Ethan is really the cutest soap kid I've seen. Loved his little scene with Luke.
It could've been better, but it was not the worst ATWT Thanksgiving I've seen.

You gotta love any Jamey, Luke & Mike podcast (listed alphabetically to avoid any diva-like complaints - lol). The discussion of the Hubard Squash cracked me up.
To Jamey's point about how awful it is when writers don't remember relationships between characters - How odd was it today when Eric greeted Beth Logan by complimenting her looks in front of her husband? They had an affair! Eric needs to be more sensitive to Stephen, who is a guest in his home. I know the old coot has slept with 3/4 of the Logan women, but he should try to remember which ones.

I still have a bit left in the podcast but i wanted to talk about the 3 day a week format, the reason it failed is because the way it's been implemented in the US, we had Monday - WED with nothing thursday - sunday , that is to long of a hiatus.
The ideal format is along the lines of Coronation street, this soap is some how pulling in really good ratings when it is treated HORRIBLY by it's network.
The show airs three nights a week in 5 1/2 hour episodes.
Monday 7:30 and 8:30 ((YES a 30 minute BREAK inbetween the episode)), Wednesday at 7:30 and then Friday at 7:30 and 8:30.
That format is HORRIBLE, yet the show is pulling in 'good' ratings and still has viewers.
Can you IMAGINE what would happen if lets say ATWT was broken up like that?
1/2 hour after YR, then BB , then another 1/2 hour of ATWT, it would be a disaster.
But if they had to do a 3 day a week format the way to do it would be air one episode Monday, One episode WED and one episode Friday.
Passions tried to do a 3 a week format but I don't think thats the only reason it was horrible in its final moments.
