HomeTVThe Oprah Winfrey ShowWhen In ‘Doubt’ Say No To The O Luke Kerr January 14, 2009 16 Comments Lord have mercy, someone said no to The Mighty O! On today’s show Oprah revealed to shocked Meryl Streep that she had contacted the director of Doubt asking to audition for the role of Mrs. Miller because it was her dream to share a scene with Streep while she was alive. The director turned her down and went with Viola Davis. Davis recieved a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Mrs. Miller. That director must have some brass balls. 16 Responses ladyofthelake January 14, 2009 I actually watched Oprah today only beacause my favorite actress Kate Winslet and Meryl Streep were on. When Oprah said that, I thought my god, is the world ending? Nobody has said no to Oprah in 20 years. Yep, that director has balls of steele and then some. Log in to Reply Chrystie-Delancey January 14, 2009 Ha! Ha! Good for him! Maybe it will force her to realize the world doesn’t revolve around her and her wants. Log in to Reply Jillian Bowe January 14, 2009 Hmm…. I never knew that Oprah thought the sun set and the moon rise for her. Log in to Reply Beth January 14, 2009 Considering how wonderful Ms. Davis was in the role, I’d say the director knew his stuff pretty darn well! Oh yeah, didn’t you know that she has a ritual she performs before sun up and sun down where she jumps and chants in a hula skirt. It’s her rain money dance, you know like the vault of money that Scrooge so swimming in each day. Log in to Reply ladyofthelake January 14, 2009 Luke, I need brain bleach now with that image dancing in my head. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens January 14, 2009 Oprah has been turned down before. She also desperately wanted the role of Bernadine (which went to Angela Basset) in Waiting to Exhale, and lobbied for it, which she revealed on her show, when she had WTE’s author Terry McMillan and the cast on her show when the movie premiered. Oprah even tried to buy the movie rights to produce it, since the movie went on to make $75 million at the box office (HUGE for that day and time in the early 90′s), she simply knew a good product when she saw one. It never ceases to amaze me how Bill Gates never gets the hate the “swimming in money” Oprah gets when he has 40 billion dollars to her one or two. Oprah didn’t tell all the suburban housewives of America to follow her like the pied piper. Don’t hate the playa, hate the game. Don’t hate the playa, hate the game.” I love your commentary, Jamey but I have a beef with Oprah as long as my forearm. But Ms. Winfrey has stood on her soap box plenty of times and spouted off about such and such (a lot of the times she doesn’t even know what she is talking about). I just don’t hear Bill Gates ad nauseum like I do with Oprah and I think most people are getting tired of it. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens January 14, 2009 Then all they have to do, is turn the channel, LOL. It’s a free country, we all spout on about things we think we are knowledgeable about. I thinks what ticks people off is that legions of people do listen to what Oprah says, good or bad. That’s on them. She is just sharing her views and just happens to be very good at getting her message across. All celebs have some sort of platform or list of causes they promote, it’s Cause Celeb, it’s a prerequisite, you have to have either a cause or a sex tape, it’s one or the other to make it in Hollywood. Log in to Reply season1217 January 14, 2009 I disagree Jamey. It doesn’t have to either/or. Kim Kardashian has a sex tape but have you heard her views on foreign policy and Darfur. It’s inspiring. I think you should take your own advice about not judging. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pushing Daisies – You will always be in my heart! Log in to Reply Chrystie-Delancey January 14, 2009 That’s just the thing, Jamey! I DON”T watch her, yet the gospel-according-to-Oprah is plastered EVERYWHERE!! I couldn’t escape it unless I went to a deserted island and then I am sure there would be a skywriter or something. It seems from your tone that you like her and I can accept that. Like I said, I LOVE your commentary! I used to like Oprah, but somewhere along the way I lost respect. I’m not sure where it was, I’m thinking it was when she had the cast of CRASH on and she kept interrupting Don Cheadle and Ludicris (like she does with most of her guests), because she didn’t agree with their viewpoint. I also was disgusted with how she promoted that stupid book, The Secret. I had co-workers that were glued to the set that day and all I could do was shake my head. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens January 14, 2009 Chrystie, I readily admit my Oprah bias, she’s one of my idols. Not in a, "I run out and by her products" way, but in a "I would love to achieve what she has" way, but trust me I make fun of the Gospel of O. I often tell one of my best friends, who reads every book Oprah tells her too, goes on every diet Oprah recommends, etc., that if Oprah told middle class women across America that she poohed in her front yard and that it was the most "liberating", "awe-inspiring" experience of her life, all across these United States, soccer moms would be poohing on their lawns, as their startled husbands and children look on. Log in to Reply Chrystie-Delancey January 14, 2009 I can respect that. She has great success. Another classic example of your humor, Jamey! Love it!! Log in to Reply ladyofthelake January 15, 2009 I didn’t know O wanted to play Bernadine in Waiting to Exhale. I’m so glad she didn’t because Angela Basset rocked the house in that movie. Everytime I hear that Mary J song, all I can think of is Angela Basset. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
