As the World Turns: Blink And You'll Miss It

What is it going to take for As the World Turns to use golden opportunities to promote what could be a nuclear explosion? Take for example today’s “OMFG Nuke finally had sex” moment. Why didn’t the PR department at As the Recasts Turns build up to it with a campaign that included the gay media, the soap media and/or heaven forbid the rough and tumble world of the blogosphere?

With its ratings sagging, As the World Turns  does not have the luxury of putting on its scaredy pants to sit on its "morals". The Procter & Gamble soap should be going all out to promote the one couple that could get it mainstream press, Nuke (Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann).

Nuke's sex scenes have been anticipated by fans for nearly two years (if not longer) and then to have a "blink and you'll miss it" episode was beyond infuriating.

Why is it in a genre where people are murdered almost daily, women sleep with their husband’s brothers, or their granddaughter’s boyfriends, sperm is switched and stolen at a lightning fast pace and mobsters are promoted as heroes, gay couples such as As the World Turns' Nuke and All My Children’s Bianca and Reese are marginalized? Heaven forbid there be a lesbian couple on Guiding Light. Instead we watch Olivia and Natalia stare longingly at one another as if they want to jump each other's bones faster than they can whisper "L Word"  in a hot-and-bothered gasp.

Maybe As the World Turns’ unwillingness to promote itself wouldn’t be such a big issue if 2008 wasn’t the year that might have been.

As the World Turns didn’t promote Nuke’s kiss in early 2008, choosing instead to let it slip by like a thief in the night. As the World Turns recast countless characters and got rid of countless more. The struggling soap didn’t capitalize on fan response to the May/December romance between Emily and Casey and instead decided to retell the stories of 2005 and 2006. As the World Turns also didn’t stick with what could have been its most explosive quadrangle of Lily, Holden, Carly and Jack.

Like today’s Nuke scenes, the rivalry between Carly and Lily had a minimal impact as they eventually made up over Cosmos. Meanwhile, Casey is now falling for the sister/bio daughter of his one-time love Emily. This show just doesn't have any rhyme or reason. Of course, I probably shouldn’t be surprised. How can a show promote itself when it is afraid to go after new audiences and doesn’t have a clear identity of what it is or what it wants to be?

I disagree with it not having any impact but I never expected Noah & Luke to have a full-on sex scene. What was shown today was more than I thought we'd ever get. Tongue I figured we'd get a kiss in a bedroom door frame (fully clothed), fade out and then coffee over breakfast with goofy grins. I liked how today played out because the afterglow was very sweet. Smile Noah & Luke have always done romantic very well when allowed to by TPTB.

Honestly, I think the show is still doing a gradual thing about easing in those who complain the show even has a gay couple into accepting Nuke. I went on one soaps site today that still has folks writing homophobic comments and complaining that N/L are taking over the show :jawdrop: , so I think TPTB are trying to find a balance. I think TPTB should just go for it since it would ease the frustration of those who are pro-Nuke since TPTB aren't going to please everyone who is anti-Nuke and should stop wasting their time trying to do so but I think they're still too concerned about alienating the folks who watch the show but aren't on-board with Nuke.

Also, what are the broadcast rules for gay male pairings on CBS? For instance, on a UK channel, they have a rule that in a gay pairing, only one male can have his shirt off during a sex/intimate scene. Does CBS have similar rules about what can be shown between two men in a sex scene? :? Cause that could be another explanation as to why it wasn't more explicit.

I just have a quick question. Does Allison know that Emily is her biological mother? I have not been watching log so I didn't know this detail when I read the article above. Thanks...

Preach Luke, they must not want an increase in viewers or new viewers. Goutman and Bloom need to be fired, and slow this show the f*** down. This show has no layers to its storytelling anymore, the whole nuke sex happened within one commercial break. Nuke fans deserved better, but at least it finally happened, history was made today in daytime, and the Nuke fans exploded, just like Luke and Noah. I hope there is more sex scenes in the future like a normal couple like Henry and Vienna get all the time. I would kill for some of that kinkiness and comedy for Luke and Noah. BTW, what happened to Aaron, he hasnt been seen since Oct 28, and was never heard from again, what a missed oppurtunity. I think he was fired, he is no longer listed in the credits with the other recurring characters. Where has Emily been too, they could have put her with Aaron, since she loves those younger men and Alison would not be too happy.

Being very pro-nuke I found the whole sex scene a very pleasant surprise and I must applaud the TPTB on this one. Yes it was unexpected but I found the more the writers planned for Nuke sex the more they seem to cockblock the entire thing. Where as this way it seemed more natural, like what usually occurs for other couples.

Now I never expected them to be in bed but I'm sure its better to do anything Nuke related in small steps due to the people who don't support the couple. We don't even have a gay couple on any show in Australia and from memory I believe the last gay characters could have been Heath Ledger in Sweat (and thats going back what 12 years).

So all in all I'm very happy with how this went down.

Let me see...

1. Andrea Evans (briefly)and Susan Haskell have returned to OLTL.

2. OLTL beat GH in the ratings.

3. Jeanne Cooper has a front burner storyline, and a serious love interest.

4. Luke and Noah FINALLY have sex.

Best year ever!!!!!!

Sorry you were disappointed and I do understand, but if you check out some Nuke related communities and message boards you’ll find that there are a whole lot of Nuke fans who are not Smile Would I have liked to have seen more? Absoulutely. But I do honestly believe that we'll get a more protracted love scene in the future. For now, I’m focusing on the positive: They made love, all those great kisses, and Jake Silbermann was finally given an opportunity to shine.

Yes, but she doesn't consider Em her mother. Em donated the egg and it was implanted in Susan, Ali's mother.

Thanks for the history. I started watching when Emily and Casey were together so I have little knowledge of the show.

It's true that the show didn't go as far as I'd like--falling into the bed together, then cuddling afterwards would've been nice--but I (somewhat) understand the position they're in: trying to please all the viewers. It's a difficult balance, and while I personally feel they should just go "there," I comprehend why they're not. I want to believe that the show will go "there" eventually with Nuke, as the viewers become more used to it.

ATWT has a lot of problems--uninteresting storylines that zip by too fast, excessive recasts--but I'm hopeful that they can get their act together. I'm immediately liking the actress playing Jade--she and Casey have terrific "frenemy" chemistry--and the upcoming returns of the talented Eric William Morris (Matt) and the great Paolo Seganti (Damien) keep me hopeful.

I was actually really happy with it. I like to be surprised. Smile And I don't blame them for not giving it away. People might get their hopes up too much only to be disappointed. And there's no need to alert the homophobes of the AFA in advance.

We didn't see them in bed, but I see this as a first step. They weren't even allowed to kiss this time last year! And even if we didn't see them in bed, I loved the shot of that very messy bed before the boys walked out of Luke's bathroom. Implied sex in the shower... Hot! Laughing out loud I really loved how they handled the scenes. No bed, but the scenes were still very hot. Hopefully we'll get to see more in the future.

I wish this show was as concerned with teen sex-o-phobes. It's sad when Parker and Liberty get to do the do on camera but not Luke and Noah. Brothers and Sisters shows gay couples being intimate, P&G is so scared it's ridiculous. They are passive aggressive. They pimp the couple with hella expensive ads on Perez, then don't promote their sex scene, or lack thereof.

The Vincent/Chad sex scene in 2007 on Passions was hotter than that---and they were uncle and nephew!!!

It sure was. For the first time, I agree with you about Passions. Reading that they were doing a Down Low storyline made me tune back in. I really hate that they mucked it up with all the hermaphrodite psycho b.s. later. That only drove home the belief that gay people are freaks, but the actual initial story was off the chain.

While I don't agree with everything going on in the Reese and Bianca storyline I think AMC is lightyears ahead of ATWT when it comes to showing gays. Reese and Bianca do more kissing that some of the couples on the show

ATWT has it's problems, but even on it's worst day, it's better than some of the garbage that's being spewed in Salem & Pine Valley.

Actually, Luke and Noah probably kiss more than any other couple on the show.... then again, they're the only couple who are together, in love with each other and not wanting someone else. For now anyway! Now that they've had sex, all bets are off!

And in truth, the show couldn't win no matter what they did. If they had of promoted it, they would have been accused of 'whoring' out the gays on one hand and the bigots would've been given notice to stir up trouble. If they don't promote it, they're accused of running scared and 'hiding' their gays (which is strange since they've had one of the most prominent storylines on the show for months and will continue to be featured). And well, I don't see how you can hide something that air on national television, but that's just me. They were going to get flak no matter what they did.

This way though it was just another day in Oakdale, which is what it should be. The world didn't come to an end and Luke and Noah can move onto other stories. And more than anything, that's the best reason for them to have done this.

Should they have done this sooner? Yes. Could they have done better? Yes. But a step was taken, a pretty significant one, really, I think.

I have to say I don't agree that it should've been advertised. As a gay man I would prefer my sexuality not be used as a way to gain ratings... It turns something special into a sideshow... Yes I realize that their whole storyline was probably a ploy to get ratings but I'm personally glad ATWT chose not to publicize this. It made it all the better.
