This week's Nelson Ratings has a very interesting comparison about how alike One Life to Live and The Young and the Restless really are, and the similar strategies they are using in their war for soap quality supremacy.
Which soap do you think is the best?

There really is no comparison- Y&R all the way- not as over the top as OLTL can be but hits the right spots.

OLTL. I've only seen bits and pieces of Y&R over the last 15 years.

Even though OLTL is great, Y&R is on it's best in years. So, I have to choose Y&R.
And who isn't Y&R watching at the moment, should watch. You really missing fantastic episodes of a great soap opera.

This OLTL vs. Y&R thing is getting so old. Who started this?
Both shows are excellent soap opera. And the only two excellent soap operas on the air.
Y&R is old fashioned, exquisitely produced, beautifully scored, classic soap opera with the best cast on daytime. And with that being said, it is safe, consistent, and comforting. I love it.
OLTL is exciting, faster paced, contemporary, FUNNY as hell sometimes- this show GETS humor. It is the ONLY ABC soap that doesn't look cheap (and that is no small feat as OLTL as the smallest studio in daytime. The show takes ALOT of chances (and never gets any credit for it,either)OLTL is classic soap opera with a contemporary edge. I love it.
I am giving it to OLTL. It is generally more "must see" and does all this with a budget MUCH lower than Y&R's.
I love them both and want them both to keep on doing what they are doing!

Y&R hands down, While OLTL had moments and flickers of greatness here and there, scattered throughout the year, Y&R has had the most consistent, pretty much flawless 6-7 months now straight and in a row and just keeps getting better. I do not think Y&R is perfect. They still have excessive weed pulling to do and the weeds know who they are. And some other characters, like Lauren, need more story. From her performance on the "Michael"-centric episode, Tracey Bregman was amazing and should not be wasted they was she is. And Lily needs a break, if not a re-cast, Darvetta! I can understand why they brought on Tyra to play the triangle with Neil and Kevin but why did she come equipped with a singing child-girl who happens to be Devon's unknown sister. She could have been an executive from another company someone with the smarts and the sass to be a threat to Karen. I think Karen is as boring as a doorknob and is just so vanilla. Her and Neil do not have chemistry. Tyra and him do but it could have been streamlined and not as convoluted and given Eva Marceille some time to grow as an actress because she has gotten better. I love Daniel and Amber happy but they need some sort of stump or obstacle for them to jump over together. Everyone else seems to have a place and purpose either in the main umbrella stories or the sub-stories that drive the main one but also serve the characters involved to learn, grow and just be. It is pure daytime writing. Like I said, I watch OLTL everyday and there are some episodes that just leave me high almost on the quality of acting and writing meshing together and the entire show revolves around one theme for the day but then there are episodes that are so disjointed, boring, piling too many characters into an arc. In one scene at the Buenos Dias Cafe, there was Antonio, Christian, Sarah, Vanessa, Lola, Carlotta, Mel and Tea all at once. They need to pare down to the pure essence of the show and I think it has veered way off course from Agnes Nixon's vision but that can be restored and the show can be even better then their best days. They could be having great shows everyday. If anyone can do it, Ron C. seems to have the passion, the curiosity of history and psychological motivations of his characters on his priority list to take it even further. Y&R though gets it for being more consistent and focusing on the core and giving me a higher percentage of soapy goodness to suit my taste. I am excited about this year's Emmy Awards and praying they they air and and give these artists the praise they deserve. It is going to be a tough year in all the major categories and the bulk of the awards are clearly going to go to OLTL and Y&R. They both have it in all areas.

KingTV- Sadly I do not think eitehr show will get the credit they deserve at the Emmys this year. My prediction is this:
Y&R gets tons of nominations as usual, with tons of double nominees in each category- most of which are deserved- and Melody Thomas Scott better get a nomination this year.
OLTL will probably get nominations in most major categories.
And here comes the fun:
AMC or GH will win Best Series with one of the stunt episodes(i.e the tornado or mob hit)
I do think Y&R will get Best Writing though...
OLTL will be shut out with the exception of Susan Haskell who will win Best Supporting Actress (yes, even over our dear Jess Walton and GLORIA Chew that scenery girl Fisher!!

Susan Haskell actually submitted herself for Lead Actress for OLTL (along with HBS, ES, and KD. Surprisingly, not RS).

I'm watching both OLTL and YR right now. YR I've watched consistently since the 70s. OLTL I've gone in and out of in the last 3 decades. They're definitely on an upswing now. Susan Haskell and the actress who plays Tea Delgado are rocking these days. Tea's scenes during the Todd trial last month were riveting. I need YR to have bigger payoffs in the weeks to come. I need Phylis to get her comeuppance, she's such a total bitch.
I'd like to do a pitch for ATWT right now. It's not perfect by any means, but it's very watchable. The Luke/Brian/Lucinda/Noah storyline is great. Laurence Lau's acting is pitch perfect as a closeted gay man. Julia Pinson gave consistently brilliant performances in the weeks leading up to Janet and Jack's wedding last month. The writing of the stories does go way too fast. It has kind of an opposite problem of YR. It has lots and lots of good payoffs, but not enough leadup. And would the world end if Kathryn Hays did something with her white hair which looks horrible on camera?

OLTL for me.
The Tea/Todd/Marty/John/Blair quadrangle is hot. Now that "Party Marty" is back the viewers and Todd are in for one hell of a ride. I am crazy about Blair and John together.
I am loving the new couples (Rex/Gigi Jess/Brody) and the vets (Viki/Charlie) getting a decent amount of airtime. Love it that Bo and Nora will be featured soon with Matthews drug problem.
I even love the teens (Starr/Cole/Langston/Marko), who previously annoyed the hell out of me.
Dorian needs a love interest stat.
Now we just have to get Chris Vega straightened out and all will be well. As for Antonio, he can take that smug attitude and hit the door. They have turned him into a real pain in the neck, and very annoying.
As for Y & R, Katherine and Murphy rock. I love them together, and this is the best love interest they have ever given Mrs. C. I hope Murphy is put on contract soon, I want him as a permanent fixture on Y & R.
I love Nikki telling Victor off on a regular basis.
Both shows have made great improvements this past year, and it goes to show the writing is what makes the shows tick. We do not need sweeps stunts, but solid consistent writing all year long.

OLTL has been mesmorizing ever since RC took over the show (save:Mendorra). I can't ever recall a time when I enjoyed the show more than I do now and I am a 20 year vet! The women of Llanview have me glued and they would give DespHoes a run for their money! So Tuc stay on OLTL!

Both shows are so good. Why do they need to compete!
OLTL has been consistently good since October.
The summer was horrible.
Y&R was terrible for the 1st half(maybe a little less) of 2008.
Both shows have hit their strides and judging from the previews, they are both going to continue being great.
Sadly, someone at another board mentioned that B&B gets to submit 4 episodes for emmy consideration and I guess that Suicide storyline could really pull off an emmy win as well.
I really hope Y&R or OLTL will win for a relatively excellent year and not 4 good episodes and a universally awful year with embarrassing acting, like B&B.

Sorry, despite the fact that Y&R has Victor and Nikki, and Jennie Cooper is one of the greatest actresses on Daytime, I was born and rasied on OLTL! And here is my oath to OLTL!!
(ABCJunky get on her stage, clears her throught)
I pledge to the soap that is called One Life To Live. And to ABC which I stand, one network, with Vicki's and Jessica's alters, David Vickers, man and dog, LaBulee, Dorian's girls and Roxy's personality.
United knowing that Carliviti will never think of bringing back the Santi's and that he is left alone to create his magic. That true OLTL fans never forget Mel, Wanda, Larry and Luna! And always knowing that when you find the rainbows end, you only have ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!

I can't choose, but they are the only saving grace that is left of great daytime drama. Other show, ie Gh, needs to follow what these two soaps and get back to what soaps should be about.
