Could The Recession Actually Save Guiding Light?

Could the dismal state of the U.S. economy provide Guiding Light with another stay of execution? While TV Week is reporting that CBS Daytime Vice-President Barbara Bloom is developing in-house candidates to possibly replace GL, TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco, is hearing things a bit differently.

Reportedly, CBS chief Barbara Bloom is already looking to replace the hour as you read this. However, a major network insider tells The Nelson Ratings that they have heard differently. “Due to the recession, no local aflliate can afford to create their own local progamming, nor does its national network. That’s what could save GL,” he says.

Whatever behind-the-scenes power moves Babs and Co. are pulling, time is definitely of the essence soap fans. If you don't want to see another tired talk show featuring a hasbeen actress or reality star, you'd better tell CBS how you feel!

I hope so. GL has been getting better and better and IMO is only overshadowed by Y&R (my personal opinion of course). If GL were to go off the air i am afraid i would not be watching any CBS soaps. Since i quit ABC and NBC only has DAYS where does that leave this soap fan?

WOW! The recession actually HELPING to save jobs. Who knew?! All the better. GL is getting its groove back. Hopefully, this will get them to kick up the action and move plots that work along and those that don't cut those losses.

That picture of Jeva brings back great memories. That was such a beautiful wedding and so worth it after all those years of ups and downs with Jeva! Makes you realize what a great show GL is (whether you still watch it or not).
I pray that CBS and P&G renew Guiding Light for at least another year. There is so much more story to tell especially with the show being so great lately! I don't know what I'd do if I didn't know what was going to happen next with Phillip, Jeva, Olivia/Natalia and all the other characters I love!

I *really* hope Nelson's insider is right on this - I truly believe that GL can keep the momentum going (ratings growth) if they are given another year. The writing is getting stronger every week.

And that is where your friendly international soap blogger comes in :) Try Home and Away / Coronation Street, both soaps are on Youtube Smile

You can also 'find' Neighbours, Hollyoaks, EastEnders and other english speaking soaps online, and they are SOOOO good....anyways lol.

I hope this is true, I really hope GL is saved.

This is what I don't get last year they renewed GL for a year with an option for an additional year. P&G/CBS need to give GL another year to get its legs. The stories are getting good. Don't cancel it when its on its way back up.

I think that the Nielsen system needs to be fixed because I think that many shows could be saved if they count everybody who watches shows. I didn't think they count everyone who watches shows unless you got a Nielsen box. I do think that the system is old and needs to be revised and the soap industry needs to be online and get advertisers that way or get product placement and fix the shows by getting new blood behind the scenes to reinvent it, but still keep the old style like the vets and some soap staples with new ways to bring in storytelling.

Well, I've felt for awhile the recession and possible depression is a good thing for daytime. No jobs means more people watching TV.

As for replaceing GL, I can see it as a possibility. You don't have a lousy decade on a whole without some need for a new start. Things do come and go as they say.

GL represents a birth of not only daytime, but television (for many). I wonder about what that means, if GL goes.

They can bring in a two dollar whore with a handheld camera and shoot in closed in rooms. They just won't be in New York City and those rooms won't be part of a studio.
