Earlier today As The World Turns executive producer Chris Goutman broke the news to his cast and crew that their sister soap, the 72-year-old Guiding Light has in fact been cancelled, according to sources.
"The series will wrap this September," says one source.
ATWT has reportedly been picked up by CBS for one more year.
"The decision came from above Barbara Bloom's head," says another source. "She was telling the truth when she told Ellen and TeleNext she thought they would be renewed."
Our pal We Love Soap's Roger Newcomb actually broke this shocking story first. Read what he has to say here. It's a sad day, not only for the soap opera industry, but for broadcasting as a whole.

I know what you mean Jammylove, the AUDACITY of them to do this on April Fools....I knew it was happening, but I didn't want to kill anyone's hope just yet. ATWT came thisclose to being cancelled too. Really scary times for the industry we all love.

Wow...I didn't start watching GL until I was living in Germany with my husband, and we both loved it so much. I will forever hold a place in my heart for this show, it is really sad because it truly was turning things around with Otalia

What a sad, sad day. I grew up watching the ABC soaps but my Grandmother, god rest her soul, LOVED GL. We had to be quiet while her story was on.
It sounds like ATWT may only have a year left if the ratings/economy doesn't improve soon.

I'm glad I have people on this board that care about this show as much as I do..... All my close friends and such don't understand what a big part of my life this show is to me. I know how you all feel right now. I'm extremely sad for the cast and everyone involved too for loosing their jobs.

Jammylove there are many people to blame, but even a cyncial old bastard like me is gonna keep from doing so. I am sure these people feel bad enough as it is. I think now is more a time for mourning and fellowshipping with fellow fans, as opposed to pointing the finger, I know, sounds strange coming from me, but I just don't wanna start the whole Barbara Bloom did this or Ellen Wheeler did that. There will be plenty of decades for that. Right now I feel sorry for everyone involved, but most of al you guys, the diehard GL fans. I have to admit, I started emotionally detaching from the show around the time of the "In The Light" campaign and was only just now beginning to see the show I once loved, so this doesn't hurt me personally as much as it did when AW died, but my heart goes out to you guys.

This is extremely heart breaking news! This is not a good sign for daytime. I truly hope P&G can succesfully shop the show to other networks.

Judging by the ratings, I can't exactly say it was unwarranted. It's certainly tragic, though.
CBS should do the right thing though and pull out all of the stops for the finale. Primetime retrospective. Lots of promos. Whatever.
The show was on for 72 years. It's modern television's elder. And CBS would do right by respecting it as such.

Well, I am not surprised per se, but I am *shocked* to finally get the confirmation. Unfortunately, I don't think things will get any better from here on out. I'm glad ATWT will continue, but if they can't get their writing (and yes, ratings) together, they may be in GL's boat at this time next year.
Ugh. I hate this. Just when GL was finally finding it's footing again...my grandparents are rolling in their graves right now. GL was a family tradition for us. I never imagined a time where GL wouldn't be on CBS.

my condolences to those who watched. I remember my bitterness when both AW and Sunset Beach were canceled.
wonder if any of the actors with be going over to ATWT.
And Goutman better stop screwing shit up and take GL's cancelation as a sharp reminder of how close ATWT is to the edge.

I am heartbroken over this news. I was so in love with Guiding Light in the early 90s as a little girl. I loved everything about it. I loved Blake and Alan Michael, the Bauers, the Cooper family, Roger Thorpe, Reva/Josh...and so on. This show hooked me with Beth Ehlers for life back then. I fell out of touch with it for a while but came back in the late 90s with Danny and Michelle. They were one of my favorite daytime couples ever.
This is just devastating for the industry and all of us that were ever fans of Guiding Light.
May have to change my avatar to honor GL

Very sad day. I grew up watching this show, and although though I stopped watching over a decade ago, I feel very bad for the fans, cast and crew.
I have a feeling that if CBS thought they could get away with it--ATWT would be gone as well. However, Bloom & CO knew that a double cancellation would alienate too many folks at one time.
Goutman and JP need to turn in their resignations for the sake of the show. They are just burnt out and ATWT is sinking fast. Their saving grace is that wonderful cast.

I am just stunned...in disbelief. I am angry that I keep seeing it posted on all these sites, even Soap Opera Digest.com. I keep thinking why today of all days, April Fools. I can't believe it. I have watched this show since 1989, and for GL not to be around anymore, I can't wrap my head around that thought. I just won't believe it just yet. I guess I am in denial.

Ok, so I guess it's true.
Well, if it's ending in Sept., hopefully that'll be enough time to wrap things up, and get people like Josh and Reva back together.
