GH Does a PSA

General Hospital's Postpartum Depression storyline has been less than stellar in my humble opinion but they are doing something right. According to Soap Opera Digest, GH is partnering with Postpartum Support International for a Public Service Announcement in conjunction with Robin's battle with PPD.

"Millions of women's lives can be saved by ending the fear and isolation of sufferers and offering access to treatment resources," said Birdie Gunyon Meyer, RN, MA, president, PSI in a statement. "We are grateful to ABC Daytime following up with a public service announcement and helping to raise awareness of what is truly the most common complication of childbirth."

The PSA featuring Kimberly McCullough will air on Thursday, April 16th.

"Hello, my name is Kimberly McCullough. I play Dr. Robin Scorpio Drake on General Hospital. Have you ever had the urge to put your baby in a tree? Have you ever wanted to kiss attractive strangers while leaving your sucker BFF at home to take care of your pretty boy hubby and your snotty nosed brat? If so, then you might have GPPPD, Guza Penned Post Partum Depression. Not to be confused with real Post Partum Depression, which is a very serious psychiatric disorder, no matter what Tom Cruise says. If you feel you are suffering from GPPPD, you must seek treatment immediately. My recommendation is watching ABC an hour earlier for One Life to Live, or switching over to CBS for The Young and the Restless. Good soap opera writing is the only cure for GPPPD. Hey, Hogan, Maria, I think I would be a better Mac than Clementine Freaking Ford!"

Roger @ WeLoveSoaps has a quote from JFP:

"As our viewers expect to be entertained each day, they also want to be educated when an important medical issue is integrated into storyline. I am sure some members of our audience are either directly affected with post partum depression or know someone who is, and we believe it is important to direct our audience to the organizations that can help them," said Jill Farren Phelps, executive producer, GENERAL HOSPITAL.

I expect responsible storytelling and so far it's not entertaining or responsible IMO. I've never had PPD, don't know anyone who has but this storyline had potential and then was derailed.... Is this PSA too little too late? Where was the PSA during Robin's HIV+ pregnancy storyline? Am I just too disappointed in GH that I won't cut them any slack?

LOL, Jamey. This has been crappy story and needs to die a quick death. PSI should be embarrassed to be associated with this crap.

"Hi, My name is Kimberley McCullough. You know me as Robin Scorpio on GH. I play a HIV-positive woman who was a saint and lost the love of my life. I have been able to move on to a hit man named Jason Morgan until that tramp Carly stole him from me and I told a little secret about her child by my boyfriend's brother, AJ. Jason didn't want anything to do with me and let Carly manipulate him for years to come. I am from Scorpio and Devane blood and was written well from Labine, Monty and Riche and now being ruined by Frons and Guza to make me look like a bad mother by having my daughter being tied to a tree in a snowstorm and asking strange men for their deposit, if you know what I mean. I fell for a obnoxious, self-absorbed jerk and we fight everyday, but I love him and now I am don't want to be with him and our daughter. Please get help for GPPPD syndrome as Jamey put it and leave the show if you can. Next I asking a slut Carly and Sonny the mobster and brain damage ex for help when I should be going to Lainey, my friend and psychiatrist or Kelly or is a ob-gyn and knows about PPD. Next they going to have my rob banks and go into a coma if they have their way. Please, Sweeney, fire Guza, Frons and Phelps now and get someone to save us from this destructed environment.

Now you know about PPD and whatever the writers are doing, yeah right. They ruined the Michael s/l and everything else. This show has become a joke. I leaving, bye.

Kimberley McCollough speaking, LOL.

That what Kimberley should say in the PSA.

I wish Sri Rao had done this PPD story. I bet it would have been well told and compelling with him writing the story.

I have never been a fan of the adult Robin Scorpio. She's always been self-righteous, arrogant and nosey IMO and I've always wished she would go back to school or back to Paris or back to wherever she was when she wasn't in Port Charles. No such luck.

In this particular round of Robiness, we get her arguing constantly with Patrick who was, as someone said, something of a jerk a lot of the time before he grew up and became a man. Unfortunately, even him growing up didn't stop the bickering. It went on and on and on ad nauseum. Most of it was Robin always believing she was right about everything even when it was obvious she wasn't. Then, it was her insatiable insecurity. Through all of this, I've wanted to scream, as if that would do any good.

Now, after insisting that she could have this kid by herself to anyone who'd listen, even though it was possible to leave her child an orphan early in life (selfish beyond measure, IMO), she now has post-partum depression and is refusing to accept that something is wrong and that she needs to get help. It absolutely galls me that she's bitching and moaning about taking anti-depressants when other people have to go through so much more and they take it like adults because they have children to raise that they actually care about. I never got the impression that Robin liked the reality of pregnancy and Emma, but that she liked the IDEA of pregnancy and Emma. Consequently, if this were the real world--or a soap written more like the real world--I'd question whether Robin had PPD or was just being her usual selfish, up tight, self-righteous self. That self included consistently disrespecting Carly's love for her children and her parenting skills. Now, look how things have turned out. If she really does have PPD as the writers have said, then it is divine providence.

I know that mine is an extremely unpopular viewpoint because Robin is beloved by one and all--except me and a handful of others--but I ask that readers respect that I feel this way. Other people hate other characters. I happen to detest Robin. Even so, for the sake of story, I could go with really great acting resulting from the break-up of her marriage, a true downward spiral of some sort, illness as a result of her HIV+ status or any number of other things. I could support the character becoming more humble and chastened by her experiences as well. Instead, we have her daring Patrick to commit her ass because she's a danger to herself and others--namely her child. It's everyone ELSE who's the problem, just as always. It's never her.

I never thought I'd say this, but I am beginning to hate the character of Robin as much as, if not more than, I hate the Jared Banks and Natalie Buchanan characters on OLTL. That's saying something!

Great post taa2! The problem is that the way GH is written there are really no sympathetic characters, no one to root for. Robin is an example of the worst written characters at the moment (the others being Luke, Kate, Jax, LuLu, Maxie, Patrick, Lucky, Liz, Nicholas..... oh wait, it seems like I'm listing all)
I don't just hate Robin, I hate all of Guza's GH! The last decent episode was, strangely enough, Robin's wedding day in december!

I love Robin Scorpio. I get how she can be annoying to some. I tend to blame the writers when Robin is annoying though because she holds a special place in my heart. She was such an adorable child. The dynamic between her and Patrick is what annoys me the most. Could they fight more? I think if their constant bickerson routine prior to marriage and pregnancy had not gone on as long as it had this PPD plot wouldn't be so annoying. Does that make sense? I would like them to have like 5 minutes of marital bliss. Is that too much to ask?

No it's not too much to ask. I would like to see five minutes of bliss for any character on GH. Apparently happiness is not an emotion used in the writer's room.

I don't want to be too PSA'ish, but I have to make a point about the treating of mental illness as I work with people who suffer from a number of mental health issues. I actually find Robin not wanting to take medication or get therapy to be one of the more realistic aspects of this story. Antidepressants can have serious side effects (sleeplessness, feeling like they are in a fog, etc...), and for Robin specifically, could interact negatively with her HIV meds. Many people are resistant to treatment for many valid reasons and the idea that they are bad people for being hesitant about this I think just reinforces the negative stigmas associated with mental illness. Treatment is a long process, and one good day can be following by two bad days. I have to give props to KMc b/c I think she is doing an eerily realistic impression of someone who is clinically depressed.
