ABC Soaps Pick Up Steam Among W 18-49; B&B Down Almost 600,000 Viewers Year-to-Date

The dead has arisen! Okay, maybe not completely, but their fingers did twitch a bit. Could be nerves. At any rate here are the ratings. ABC’s recently-revamped General Hospital gained 113,000 total viewers over the previous week, while sibling sudsers All My Children and One Life to Live gained 96,000 and 56,000 total viewers respectively. These new eyeballs helped AMC gain one-tenth of a point in households (GH and OLTL stayed the same) and all three ABC soaps netted an impressive two-tenths of a point gain among Women 18-49.

Things weren’t so rosy at CBS. Daytime’s number one soap The Young and the Restless lost 176,000 total viewers over the previous week, causing the Bell soap to drop two-tenths of a point in households. Y&R held steady in the coveted Women 18-49 demo. Y&R’s little sister, The Bold and the Beautiful, lost 72,000 viewers over the past week, but once again the really sad story for B&B can be found by looking at numbers year-to-date. B&B is down darn near 600,000 viewers over this time last year—that’s more than any of the other soaps on the dial!

As The World Turns lost 37,000 viewers from the week before, however it was the only CBS soap to go up in households, gaining one-tenth of a point. Guiding Light had mixed results for the week of May 11-15. While daytime’s elder stateswoman gained 26,000 total viewers over the previous week, GL dropped one-tenth of a ratings point among Women 18-49, tying the soap opera’s all-time low in that all-important demographic. Over at the Peacock, Days of Our Lives lost 31,000 total viewers, dropping one-tenth of a point in households, however DAYS managed to gain one-tenth of a point among Women 18-49.

Wow. 72,000 down for B&B, I guess it’s because the viewers are slowly getting bored with another round of Taylor/Ridge/Brooke/Stephanie and Nicket. I can only hope that the show will give DD a good storyline so that people are willing to tune back in. I’m counting on Bell.

Unfortunately, B&B had HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE writing and acting over the last year. The show recycles the same storylines and rips apart/reunites the same couples. It was a mess. I still cringe when I think of Ridge recklessly driving his car at high speed in his attempt to chase Rick. Just nonsensical garbage.

Hopefully, the changes underway will help. It’s shocking to think that B&B is from the same company that produces Y&R. No matter how bad people thought Y&R was with Lynn Marie Latham, Y&R was still light years better than B&B.

The problem with B&B is that its also very closed feeling. Moreso than any other soap, B&B feels like every thing is taking place in a single space.

Right now, the 2 best soaps on CBS are Y&R and the revitalized GL.

I keep wondering why Days is number 3. I have been a Days fan for years but I don’t like hardly any of the couples they are doing now. The feud seems interesting enough but that is about it. Everything else seems dull. Also, my favorite actress Rachel Melvin left the show…there is no Chelsea and I miss Chelsea! More importantly, I miss Daniel and Chelsea together! Shawn Christian is still on there but to me, they could give him sooo much better of a story line!

Rafe has been on the show less time then Daniel, yet we see Rafe getting a sister….what do we know about Daniel? Seems like once they had him break up with Chelsea, they stopped the character development of Daniel. I just don’t get why Days seems to be doing well. I hope they bring Chelsea back and bring Daniel and Chelsea back together again!!

Talking about Days- has Abe, Lexie, and Theo been banished to Alice’s attic? I miss them and can’t believe they are not being used. Its bullsh*t!!!

This should have happened to B&B years ago. The writers & director should be fired. Too much wife-swapping,contrived set-ups,the Logan’s, immature actors, English accents, “honey bear” & script. It’s going to take more than Don Diamont to rescue this turkey. He’s the only good thing on it. The Y&R writers knew when a family should be written off from the soap. Remember the Brookes girls from the 70’s? Time to say good-bye to the Logans & then the Forresters.

I totally agree. Both shows are very well written nowadays and it’s a pleasure to watch them. As for B&B, Rick/Steffy are the worst couple ever IMO and Brooke vs Taylor competing for Ridge, and Stephanie convincing his son to make “the right choice” is a 20-years old, recycled storyline and most of us would rather see something fresh than this.
