Guiding Light's Otalia: The Couple to Watch

TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco is psyched about those Sapphic Same-Sexers from Springfield, Olivia Spencer (Crystyal Chappell) and Natalia Rivera (Jessica Leccia), aka Guiding Light's Otalia, in this week's Nelson Ratings. Which soap couple has you all fired up?

Otalia is THE Couple to watch. No question. Thank you DC and Nelson for giving the girls some love. This story is simply amazing. Jill Lorie Hurst is writing some amazing stuff. In my years of soap watching I have never seen a story so well crafted. Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia are doing a wonderful job.

Help save the show everyone. Its worth it. Call and write!

I agree Otalia is THE couple on daytime right now. It is the best love story on television period. Ellen Wheeler and Jill Lorie Hurst have written and produced a timeless masterpiece that is beautifully acted by Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia. I haven't been this excited about a couple since Luke and Laura on General Hospital 30 years ago.

Props to DC and Nelson for giving Otalia some love.

This show is so worth saving. I'll follow GL wherever it goes!

Which soap couple has me all fired up?? Um..that'd be Bill Lewis and Lizzie Spaulding aka GL's Bizzie! They have been in the making for 19 LOOOOONG months, and the last 3-months is the longest these 2 have been "together."...I am SO ready for a Bizzie wedding! I've stuck it out, I deserve my pay-off..and I want it! Smile

I too, will follow GL ANYWHERE!!

Here is some great information on saving Guiding Light and As The World Turns. There are names, address, phone numbers and emails. Get the word out and keep the faith. They like short to the point and keep it nice. I hope it goes to Lifetime.

Since when are Otalia even a couple? All they do is hold hands and bat their eyes at each other? 11 year-old girls do that over Cherry Cokes at the mall. And I'm pretty sure that you can't be sapphic partners if you haven't even actually kissed the other woman! The only kiss they shared wasn't out of passion but Olivia's frustration with Natalia's seemingly boundless naivete.

Olivia & Natalia's relationship is something that I was in favor of from the minute the rumors went around that the writers were going there and everything was going great until the big feelings reveal but the wind has completely gone out of Otalia's sails since the non-wedding, mostly because Natalia blurted out her love the same day Olivia did. That's a big soap no-no. They missed a huge story beat there. But if they'd skipped that because they knew time was running short and they wanted to move this story along? Fine but that's not what happened. Olivia and Natalia are even less close than they were before the reveal. It's getting ridiculous. If GL wants this story to be taken seriously again, they need to pursue it seriously. Reducing Olivia and Natalia to hand-holding buddies who smile coyly at each other but at the end of day, do nothing more, is a cowardly cop-out and not very entertaining either.

Otalia FTW!!!! I like the incredibly cute flirtation they have going on (and of course the sexy eyes from The Goddess). I really enjoy the depth of character JLH has created within their individuality and their identity as a couple. I would agree that they haven't really jumped into the land of coupledom quite yet, since there are many ways they don't really own that label. But they are definitely headed there and I like the slow progression. They still have a lot to deal with, both with each other, with their kids and the rest of springfield.

JLH is slowly killing me with the angst that is Otalia. It has been going on so long that I should be dead by now...yet, I am willing subjecting myself to this slow torture. I am so excited for what is to come. I know Jessica will be on maternity leave and kudos to her for working so late into her pregnancy and giving 150% to the role/story line. The leave will certainly add more twists...again, can't wait for the angst and tears. BECAUSE I know Crystal will bring it!

As for whether they are a couple - Yes they are. They've been a couple well before they tried to define their relationship. All the other stuff...it will happen. I haven't seen GL take the easy road yet in this story line. I don't expect to see that happen now.

All in all...I am a very happy GL fan that is very high on Otalia right now. Let's save the show!

Glad folks are really taking notice! Forget they are gorgeous, forget that they can act circles around 75% of the actors on soaps today, forget that they have writers who are knocking it out of the ball park, forget that the story itself is taking us to the slow-paced/heart-wrenching/touching and true to life stories we haven't seen in the better part of 20 years....

No wait.... don't forget any of that! All of that is why this story and this couple should be at the top of any soap-viewer's list!

Thanks for noticing and bringing it to more folk's attention!

As I am no longer watching the ABC shows I would have to say the couples I am enjoying are Otalia and Bill and Lizzie on GL and I am now, after much good buzz here and elsewhere about Y&R starting to dig in over there too. Although I don't have a favorite pairing on Y&R yet - I am working on it

Yep, no doubt about it. The couple to watch is definitely Otalia. It's the reason I started to watch GL. The writing and acting for this storyline keeps me glued to the screen. Doesn't hurt either that CC and JL are HOT!! I'll follow them anywhere!

Otalia are THE couple to watch. The brilliant writing of Jill Lorie Hurst has made for the most breathtaking love story I have ever witnessed on television. Soap operas are really the best place to tell a good love story these days, and Guiding Light does it best. While Otalia and their portrayers, the incomprable Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia, are number one for me on television (daytime OR primetime), GL also brings us the fun of a murder mystery, a wacky Ponzi scheme, the struggle of a teen released from prison, the building angst of a potential quadrangle, and the cuteness of Bizzie!

Otalia and Guiding Light are the best of television right now. Keep the Light Shining!

Thank you Nelson. Otalia is the storyline to watch. It is the greatest true to love story I have ever seen. A special thank you to Ellen Wheeler, Jill Lorie Hurst, Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia. Crystal and Jessica bring their all to their role every single time!

I love Otalia!

Not only because of their slow build romance, or because their chemistry can melt steel, but because their story is subtly addressing the insidious world of internalized homophobia. They declared their love after creating a mound of human wreckage for the sake of heterosexuality - AKA Natalia's attempted wedding to Frank.

After becoming comfortable with each other again, they are now dancing even more steps with their internalized homophobia. They are now comfortable with each other but don't know how to tell the world (their family and friends) of their love for each other. And their perceived problem with physical intimacy is also a part of this internalized homophobia. Or it could just be that the build up to the big physical intimacy is just a nod to them being a supercouple.

Otalia for the win, baby!!!! Every tilt of the head, every touch of the hand, every time they look at each other, every time they talk about "us" and belonging "together," every time they worry about losing each other...it's deep and passionate and radiant and heartbreaking and heart-tugging. which is exactly why fans are on the edge of their seats with this truly awesome pair.

JL as Nat is sweet and nurturing, but has increasingly revealed she can be a powerful force, fiercely protective of her new family. And watching CC is breath-taking. Though recently timid and hesitant when it comes to Natalia, Olivia's sensuality and intensity are always bubbling just below the surface.

Only these two can make a simple tilt of the head sexy as hell!!!

I like other couples. Otalia has become overrated and overzealous Otalia fan campaigning is annoying, over the top, and obnoxious. I am actually turned off from the couple because of it. They haven't brought up the ratings one bit. Now how about giving some other couples some coverage? K? Thanks!

Previously I didn't think of myself as a bandwagoner, but for me its clearly Olivia and Natalia. In all my 30 plus years of tv watching, I've never been this addicted to watching a couple, nor have I been so completely glued to every twist and turn.

Its been extraordinary to watch how this couple developed over time, you really feel (and I do mean feel) such tremendous love between these characters, and currently the oh-so-heavy in the air sexual tension. For who these characters are, their arc makes complete sense, even if the waiting can seem excruciating at times. But anyone who doesn't think these two are a couple hasn't been watching them through the last year plus. They've been so for a long time, just took them until more recently to admit it out loud. Its a pure pleasure to watch them and I hope we can watch them beyond September. If not, I still have been on such a ride. Truly a beautiful, gorgeous love story.

I can only agree; Otalia is THE couple to watch. Half of the time they're driving me crazy with the angst and the slow pace and the other half of the time they're driving me a whole different kind of crazy with the looks and the little touches and the subtle declarations of love. Last night it was Olivia saying "you know I'd do anything for you" that made my heart flutter, and they're giving me at least one of those moments in every episode. And that's what makes it all worth it; as long as they can make me feel that way with just a few words or sometimes just by looking at each other, I don't need to be watching any other couples.

Bizzie has me all fired up. After a very long time, us long suffering Bizzie fans are finally getting a pay off.

It does make me smile when I read that Otalia has so much angst. Where? Maybe Bizzie has "ruined" me with their 19 month of torture that I really don't see any angst for any of the new couples on GL.

I do think that they should have let Natalia marry Frank while in love with olivia. That would have been so much better and angsty IMO.

I grew up a GL fan.. all the way through college. Once my "real" life began I had no time for soaps.... until now. Otalia and more specifically CC and JL have brought me back to GL. I am not a conservative, but the bed jumping on all the soaps really did NOT interest me. A true love story is one one built on unconditional love, not bed jumping. I, for one am thrilled to see a love story develop and the fact that it is same-sex is irrelevent.... just a well told and acted story.

Glad I am not the only one who sees... thanks Nelson for getting the word out.

I have to comment on a previous post that 'Otalia fans campaigning is over the top, annoying and obnoxious..' No, we are just proud of the writing, acting and care that has been taken with this storyline. As CC has said, she and JL think of it as their little baby, and it is obvious how much JLH and EW think of it. It is an idea that has been batted around for 8 years! It hasn't been hyped up by P&G / cbs they are not declaring it to be anything other than what it is - a love story. When one of the actors involved states that it is the truest love story she has ever been involved in and that she is so proud to be a part of it, you know they are doing something right. Besides, we want to save our show. We want to see Guiding Light continue, and we will and are doing everything we can to make that happen. I hope that all the other fan bases are doing the same. We are 'one' in this battle. We are not just Bizzie, or Shaynah fans(I love them both!) fans, we are Guiding Light fans. So lets come together to make sure we are still able to comment on GL articles like this next year and the year after that.

Otalia is definitely THE couple to watch! CC and JL have such amazing chemistry (it burns up the screen) and Jill Lorie Hurst is writing an incredibly deep and complicated storyline. It's all about love, but love is never easy. Not to mention that CC and JL are so dedicated to their fans, even having random fun with us on Twitter. I've never seen or been a part of a fandom like this, and I pray Otalia and GL have many more years ahead of them.
