Line of the Week:"Lily is a Good Judge of Character"

Did I hear things right today on Y&R when gumshoe Paul (Doug Davidson) said  to Nina (Tricia Cast) that Lily was a good judge of character, and with a straight face no less? I think I just felt Dru rolling over in her watery grave.

With Genoa City being a gossipy town, hasn't Paul heard of Lily's (Christel Khalil) track record with men?  Kevin (Greg Rikaart) gave her an STD, Daniel (Michael Graziadei) decided to take up porn viewing as a hobby, Billy (Billy Miller) hustled her about baby Delia's paternity, and now comes the news that Cane (Daniel Goddard) isn't the Chancellor heir and Phillip III (Thom Bierdz) is still alive.

Just when I thought Paul was starting to be one of the sharpest tacks in the box, he goes and pulls this mess! Either Paul's just being nice or viewers now know where Heather (Vail Bloom) gets her legal mind from. What is your line of the week?

Lily is very trusting. Her judgement when it comes to men is as good as Heather's, I suppose. That line did make me raise an eyebrow and I actually like Lily.

You'd think Paul while "at work in the Coffee Shop" would have observed the 20 year olds by now and seen Lily's messes (I ADORE Billy, but if Sweet Lily -insert violins- was a good judge of character, she never would have gotten entagled in THAT)

Oh Paul....Paul, Paul, Paul.....what are we going to do w/you???

Another sign that Maria Hell, Scott Slammer, and Hogan Heffer need to be fired...This is about as bad as when they had Olivia say that "Tyra had the fire" that Dru had and tried to push Tyra to breakup Neil and Karen's relationship.

Hire Sally Sussman Morina and let me be her co-headwriter. I know what Y&R is supposed to be. It was always suppose to be "THE SOAP". Now it is just "a soap".

With that being said from now on out nobody on DC better not say nothing bad about Passions. Cause Y&R is stealing Passions entire template for storytelling.

David, Just because Passions did a down low storyline does not,I repeat not, mean Y&R is copying them. Chad's story started off like a typical down low story, found in most direct-to-DVD movies. He was creeping on his lady with a dude, or he thought it was a dude. That isn't the case at all at Y&R. Adam is a straight man who is so desperate not get caught, he will seduce a gay man to keep his crimes a secret.  Those stories are about as similar as Spike Lee's film library to that of Tyler Perry's.

The way Passions did it was different yes. But the theme of the way Passions created storylines sans Jim Reilly is surely playing itself out Y&R. This is not working for this soap.

Say what you will about LML but under her tenure the Black characters were front and center. I'll give her that much credit.

I'm finding more and more that fan reaction to the state of Y&R is Negative. Dead babies running around in bodies...A quadrangle that is quickly becoming boring as it has just about lived long past its usefulness...A Mac Recast that just ain't working and a rush to rekindle the love between she and Billy...If Lily sleeps with one more white man I will just have to believe those damn rumors. There is no way a white character male or female would date 4 black men back to back on a soap...This angry Jill and all that ain't even half way believable. Bill Bell knew how to build up to the anger, resentment, loss, and pain...Shit you have about 8+ plus characters who pop on 2 times a month now and most of them have been there for more 5 years--More then 10 even...Y&R is not Y&R anymore. The fine wine has turned into a cheap 9 dolla 7-11 bottle.

Y&R does not deserve to be #1 not at this point. Nor does B&B at number two. Bell soaps are now mostly Hell soaps.

Mary Jane and Chloe are the only people that has got my interest right now.

Maria Hell is not the savior of Y&R. What started out as a good relationship has descended into an "I wish I never knew you" type of feeling.

And any fan poll would show about an 80 percent disapproval rating. The message boards continue to show an ever growing hatred of Y&R. Don't let MS and PB's acting fool you. This show is on the downward spiral and if they don't get back to basics soon they will lose viewers.

David, I agree with you statements about Y&R. I do feel that the show is turning into plot driven instead of the character driven show that it use to be. I am so sick of the quad that it isn't even funny anymore. And Jill is turning into a bitter shrew and is not watchable and the rushing through s/ls that doesn't make sense and I don't know where the show is going. I think the problem is, I sorry to say it, is Hogan. He was good on ATWT the first two years, but it gotten crazier the last year on his term of ATWT and was let go and I am seeing the same thing on here. I think the show should get Ed Scott back to be head writer. He knows the history and Bill bell's vision of the show.

Ed Scott was good. Maria says "My show my vision.." Well her vision is cloudy at best..." The moment they hired Hogan I was like "Oh God he's going to ruin the show..." And look what has happened.

Get Ed Scott, Sally Sussman Morina, and Kay Alden all back on the writing team and i'm sure Y&R will go back to the character driven stories they use to have.

Y&R use to be like Master Piece Theater. They could provide compelling drama without all the "over the top" high jinks that other soaps provided.

I use to watch the soaps in this order.

Passions first for fun and laughs. Then Days as the buffer between Passions and Y&R. And finally Y&R was like the main event.

Y&R was what every other soap needed to model themselves after. It put the D in daytime. It was number 1 for a reason and all other soaps fell at its mercy.

See Days could get away with the stuff that doesn't fly on Y&R. Because Days is that soap!

But right now GL is the most realistic soap. And so I watch Y&R first so I can get the mess over with. Move on to Days which lightens my mood. Then get to GL for the main event.

In My Opinion On "Lily's A Good Judge Of Character"!

Ah now she isn't a good judge of character when it comes to her dealings with men.
She's more like Ashley Abbott, but without all the "with baby drama"!
She really needs her mom Drucilla back in her life with dad Malcom also.
Not that daddy/uncle Neil, hasn't done a good fathering job all those years of knowing before that he wasn't her father-but really her uncle at best then and now.
She just keeps getting emotionally hurt by the men that's been in her life/relationships.
The writers need to make Lily's character, into a more "heart guarded person" when it comes to men though i think at least as she gets much older in her life as a women.

Please: "Y&R use to be like Master Piece Theater. They could provide compelling drama without all the "over the top" high jinks..."

Y&R was built on va-voom! Jill vs. Katherine. Nina and David. Isabelle vs. Christine. Sheila Carter vs. the world! Victor Newman was introduced as a man who kidnapped and tortured his wife's lover.

You not lyin' there! Y&R was high camp in the 80's and early 90's. The comic hijinks of Rex faking his heart attack are forever embedded of my childhood memories and that's one the many reasons I love this soap.

How Can Paul, Say That About Lily When He's Talking To Nina Webster?

Paul doesn't even know Lily that well, to be even making or saying this "Lily is a Good Judge of Character" statement within his own mind, when talking to Nina that is.
He didn't even know that Mary Jane Benson (Patty Williams-Abbott) was his sister at The Genoa City Athletic Club until he remembered that she had a very funny way of laughing when they were children back then.
He's comparing his daughter Heather's mind to Lily's mind.
These 2 young women only have really 1 thing in common: their fathers not being in their lives when growing up.
You don't have to be a (rocket/p.i scientist) to figure this out Paul!

i caught a few minutes of the show the other day and lily was onscreen for just a minute or two than out the door to some seminar. my thought was keep her at as many seminars as possible! she bores me to tears and is/was ruining cane. if he can be married to her and she's barely onscreen while he has this awesome story than i'm one happy viewer!

I think for a soap to have all it's characters in burning storylines is a great accomplishment!MAB does a marvelous job as far as I'm concerned,KAY ALDEN has ruined every show she's ever written for!If the story of Adam isn't character driven then what is?If Jill's breakdown isn't character driven what is?How about Mary Jane?I agree about the WINTERS they've been on the background for a long time but so have other characters, I'm sure that MAB will do sth for it!You can't do all things at once! What I would like to see is DRUSSILA!
The young and the restless is the only soap watchable at this point!!!!

Marion216, go on ahead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know what I've been saying about loving this soap for what it is and stop beating up MAB for her shortcomings. We put up with drivel during the Bill Bell era, but like my grandmomma always says, "One monkey don't stop the show."

PAUL: Look at Lily's track record: Daniel, Billy and now Cane - somebody buy her a clue. Or check her DNA. I refuse to believe she is Dru's flesh and blood.

Vernonda,

To be fair to Lily, she just turned 21. She's still a kid. Cane is supposed to be in his early 40s (even though he looks 10 years younger). The only man she ever dated who was her age was Daniel.

It's unfair to judge Lily as an adult.

Neil has been a good father to her. He's not her uncle. A father is who raises and loves you, not who provided the sperm donation.

Oh I remember the 80's and no Y&R was nothing compared to B&B, Days, and Passions when it comes to camp. They took the cake.

Of course Y&R has had few villainous characters and dabbled in something a little out there from time to time. But Bill Bell knew just how far too go and when to pull it back.

The ratings under Kay Alden were good and Alden won 3 daytime emmy's for best Writing.

-Wins, 1997, 2000, 2006, Best Writing, The Young and the Restless

Writers guild Award winner as well:
-Wins, 2002 & 2005, Best Writing, The Young and the Restless

If Maria Hell was so hot then the ratings would not be dropping. Have you seen the message boards? Most of the fans are tuning out. The ratings are down and people are not feeling Y&R.

It's not good. When y&R was good it hit a 4.0 It's in bad shape so they need to get back to basics. It does not deserve the number one position. The show to watch now is GL. It reminds me of what Y&R use to be.

Okay it's official I talked my parents and other Y&R family viewers. I quit it. It's too stressful to watch this show be so bad. I was trying to do my Vlog about the show and I just didn't have the heart. I'm done with Y&R again for the third time. As is my family. I'm replacing it it with One Life To Live. Maybe when they fire the hacks I'll tune back in. But for now I'm Y&R'd out.

The only way I think I will return is if Victoria Rowell is rehired. Other then that I'm done. Days, GL, and OLTL should keep me going. And I'll fast forward though AMC to the Hubbard scenes.

*sighs* It's been a long time coming. The show I knew doesn't exist anymore. I shed a tear tonight and tipped my bottle of Cristal to its memory.

I've tried all kinds of ways to deal with it. I can't. When you see that 3.3 rating think of me.

david46208,

Sorry to see you leave the Y&R fold. I think GL has been doing great work lately. But it's near death. Production ceases on August 7, and there is no chance that CBS will change its mind nor has there been any indication that another network will pick it up.

Moreover, although its writing has improved and there is buzz about Otalia, GL's ratings are plummeting, not improving. Even if GL went to cable, how many of the 1.6 million viewers would be able follow it to cable? Many viewers don't have cable because they can't afford it. That's the reality of this situation.

I say this to every one: don't stop watching a soap because it's gone astray. Speak out but support it. If you walk away, then you are condemning it to death with no chance for recovery. Things are that bad these days. Why pretend otherwise.

Josstheguy, I agree with you. Y&R has dropped somewhat in the quality of writing but it does not deserve to fall by the wayside like GL. Daytime dramas are dying and losing more viewings from the number one soap in daytime will create a domino effect. If the flagship falls then they all will fall. It sounds like David is mad about the direction of the show with regards to the African American storyline. I don't blame him but it is what it is. I stopped watching GL because I thought 95 percent of the show was bad. With Y&R, about 40 percent of the show is bad. The other 60 percent I can deal with. We should stick with the show. I think it will rebound much it has in the past.

Reggyreg, I'm loving Y&R. This show has me hooked. I could do with less Scoobies and the Quad of Lies and Sex, and I've written extensively about the Winters family.

Over all, I love the Ashley/Adam/Victor show, anything with Katherine, Jill, Cane, Nina, Lily, and P3. And a spoonful of Gloria and Jeffrey makes me so happy (because those two are a twisted delight!).

I'm sorry that others are digging this but Y&R is SMOKIN' HOT. I just re-watched the episode where Ashley takes her tumble (thanks CBS.com!). MTS was hilarious with her Voodoo comment. Marvelous acting!

My favorite soaps: Y&R, GL, OLTL. None of these soaps makes me cringe as I do when I see B&B, GH, or ATWT. (Haven't watched AMC or Days in years. Try to pop in. John Aniston is hilarious with his acerbic lines. Hate the whole EJ/Sami thing--unrepentant rapist as a desirable lover? BARF!!) I try to watch bits and pieces of these three.

B&B is by the most irritating. The Jackie and Owen story is hot. The rest? Blah. I can't go through another game of marriage ping pong with Ridge and Brooke. Why bother? These two are 50 years old. If they can't get their crap together after being married to each other 3 or 4 times, who can?

ATWT was actually kind a fun on Thursday. I feel sorry for Roger Howarth. He seems to be playing a caricature of his Todd Manning character. Remember when Paul was a hero? His love for Rose. Now he's a dopier and more dysfunctional version of his dad James Stenbeck--who might be a sociopath but he wasn't useless. Dusty needs a shave and a haircut (two bits!).

What do folks think the networks will air in place of soaps? Oh, yeah, pathetic game shows, talk shows, and infomercials! Double, triple, quadruple blech!

Josstheguy, I totally agree with you. I think the networks will have a hard time replacing daytime dramas. It is interesting how some people think the young and the restless is awful while some think it is doing great right now. I guess it is a matter of taste. The only soaps I watch are Y&R and the bold and the beautiful. I think B&B is not doing well right now and I can not stand another Ridge and Brooke break up! Just keep them together and find a man for Taylor (I can't stand Taylor!)The fire of B&B is no longer there and hiring Don Diamont has proven not to be the answer. The show needs help bad right now. I think overall that Y&R is doing pretty well!

Y&R is good but there is some problems with the show. It isn't that hard to write for the aA on the show. We do things like Caucasians counterparts do. Neil can be the rival in the business world with Chancellor Industries be going after Jabot and Newman clients and make Neil a very power exec. But I don't think that the show cares about the AA audience.

ITA with all of Simon's (and David's) posts so far! So... MAB is not exactly the Second Coming, eh? Interesting to see where things stand now that the bloom is off the rose.

The hiring choices have not been the best. They do need to dump Hogan Sheffer (Soap Killer Extraordinaire), dump Scott Hamner, dump Paul Rauch and bring on Ed Scott to join MAB as HW/EP, Sally Sussman Morina and Thom Racina.

I am there with you. I can't stand the pressure anymore. The writing is just too depressing and right now I do not need depression. This will be my fifth time leaving Y&R. This time, I think i,m gone for good.

I think if you read any of the message boards you will get plenty of speeches but do TPTB listen ? No they do not. They keep their course until the ax falls and then they wonder what went wrong. People are already speaking out, dear.It is now up to the MAB&CO to get it together.
