HomeTVThe Young and The RestlessLine of the Week:”Lily is a Good Judge of Character” Jillian Bowe June 19, 2009 The Young and The Restless 41 Comments Did I hear things right today on Y&R when gumshoe Paul (Doug Davidson) said to Nina (Tricia Cast) that Lily was a good judge of character, and with a straight face no less? I think I just felt Dru rolling over in her watery grave. With Genoa City being a gossipy town, hasn’t Paul heard of Lily’s (Christel Khalil) track record with men? Kevin (Greg Rikaart) gave her an STD, Daniel (Michael Graziadei) decided to take up porn viewing as a hobby, Billy (Billy Miller) hustled her about baby Delia’s paternity, and now comes the news that Cane (Daniel Goddard) isn’t the Chancellor heir and Phillip III (Thom Bierdz) is still alive. Just when I thought Paul was starting to be one of the sharpest tacks in the box, he goes and pulls this mess! Either Paul’s just being nice or viewers now know where Heather (Vail Bloom) gets her legal mind from. What is your line of the week? 41 Responses buddabridgewater June 19, 2009 hahaha i laughed my ass off when i heard him say that i like lily but come on now she is not very bright Log in to Reply Pure_Diva June 19, 2009 Lily is very trusting. Her judgement when it comes to men is as good as Heather’s, I suppose. That line did make me raise an eyebrow and I actually like Lily. Log in to Reply goyankees June 19, 2009 You’d think Paul while “at work in the Coffee Shop” would have observed the 20 year olds by now and seen Lily’s messes (I ADORE Billy, but if Sweet Lily -insert violins- was a good judge of character, she never would have gotten entagled in THAT) Oh Paul….Paul, Paul, Paul…..what are we going to do w/you??? Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model June 19, 2009 Another sign that Maria Hell, Scott Slammer, and Hogan Heffer need to be fired…This is about as bad as when they had Olivia say that “Tyra had the fire” that Dru had and tried to push Tyra to breakup Neil and Karen’s relationship. Hire Sally Sussman Morina and let me be her co-headwriter. I know what Y&R is supposed to be. It was always suppose to be “THE SOAP”. Now it is just “a soap”. With that being said from now on out nobody on DC better not say nothing bad about Passions. Cause Y&R is stealing Passions entire template for storytelling. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens June 19, 2009 David, Just because Passions did a down low storyline does not,I repeat not, mean Y&R is copying them. Chad’s story started off like a typical down low story, found in most direct-to-DVD movies. He was creeping on his lady with a dude, or he thought it was a dude. That isn’t the case at all at Y&R. Adam is a straight man who is so desperate not get caught, he will seduce a gay man to keep his crimes a secret. Those stories are about as similar as Spike Lee’s film library to that of Tyler Perry’s. Log in to Reply siomonstuart2003 June 19, 2009 David, I agree with you statements about Y&R. I do feel that the show is turning into plot driven instead of the character driven show that it use to be. I am so sick of the quad that it isn’t even funny anymore. And Jill is turning into a bitter shrew and is not watchable and the rushing through s/ls that doesn’t make sense and I don’t know where the show is going. I think the problem is, I sorry to say it, is Hogan. He was good on ATWT the first two years, but it gotten crazier the last year on his term of ATWT and was let go and I am seeing the same thing on here. I think the show should get Ed Scott back to be head writer. He knows the history and Bill bell’s vision of the show. Log in to Reply appleridge June 20, 2009 No Kay Alden She;s screwing up over there at B&B Log in to Reply vernonda June 20, 2009 In My Opinion On “Lily’s A Good Judge Of Character”! Ah now she isn’t a good judge of character when it comes to her dealings with men. She’s more like Ashley Abbott, but without all the “with baby drama”! She really needs her mom Drucilla back in her life with dad Malcom also. Not that daddy/uncle Neil, hasn’t done a good fathering job all those years of knowing before that he wasn’t her father-but really her uncle at best then and now. She just keeps getting emotionally hurt by the men that’s been in her life/relationships. The writers need to make Lily’s character, into a more “heart guarded person” when it comes to men though i think at least as she gets much older in her life as a women. Log in to Reply vernonda June 20, 2009 How Can Paul, Say That About Lily When He’s Talking To Nina Webster? Paul doesn’t even know Lily that well, to be even making or saying this “Lily is a Good Judge of Character” statement within his own mind, when talking to Nina that is. He didn’t even know that Mary Jane Benson (Patty Williams-Abbott) was his sister at The Genoa City Athletic Club until he remembered that she had a very funny way of laughing when they were children back then. He’s comparing his daughter Heather’s mind to Lily’s mind. These 2 young women only have really 1 thing in common: their fathers not being in their lives when growing up. You don’t have to be a (rocket/p.i scientist) to figure this out Paul! I quit it. It’s too stressful to watch this show be so bad. I was trying to do my Vlog about the show and I just didn’t have the heart. I’m done with Y&R again for the third time. As is my family. I’m replacing it it with One Life To Live. Maybe when they fire the hacks I’ll tune back in. But for now I’m Y&R’d out. The only way I think I will return is if Victoria Rowell is rehired. Other then that I’m done. Days, GL, and OLTL should keep me going. And I’ll fast forward though AMC to the Hubbard scenes. *sighs* It’s been a long time coming. The show I knew doesn’t exist anymore. I shed a tear tonight and tipped my bottle of Cristal to its memory. I’ve tried all kinds of ways to deal with it. I can’t. When you see that 3.3 rating think of me. Log in to Reply josser June 20, 2009 david46208, Sorry to see you leave the Y&R fold. I think GL has been doing great work lately. But it’s near death. Production ceases on August 7, and there is no chance that CBS will change its mind nor has there been any indication that another network will pick it up. Moreover, although its writing has improved and there is buzz about Otalia, GL’s ratings are plummeting, not improving. Even if GL went to cable, how many of the 1.6 million viewers would be able follow it to cable? Many viewers don’t have cable because they can’t afford it. That’s the reality of this situation. I say this to every one: don’t stop watching a soap because it’s gone astray. Speak out but support it. If you walk away, then you are condemning it to death with no chance for recovery. Things are that bad these days. Why pretend otherwise. Log in to Reply valso June 20, 2009 I think Y&R is great right now! Log in to Reply siomonstuart2003 June 20, 2009 Y&R is good but there is some problems with the show. It isn’t that hard to write for the aA on the show. We do things like Caucasians counterparts do. Neil can be the rival in the business world with Chancellor Industries be going after Jabot and Newman clients and make Neil a very power exec. But I don’t think that the show cares about the AA audience. Log in to Reply Pure_Diva June 21, 2009 ITA with all of Simon’s (and David’s) posts so far! So… MAB is not exactly the Second Coming, eh? Interesting to see where things stand now that the bloom is off the rose. The hiring choices have not been the best. They do need to dump Hogan Sheffer (Soap Killer Extraordinaire), dump Scott Hamner, dump Paul Rauch and bring on Ed Scott to join MAB as HW/EP, Sally Sussman Morina and Thom Racina. Log in to Reply fewfew50 June 21, 2009 DAVID I am there with you. I can’t stand the pressure anymore. The writing is just too depressing and right now I do not need depression. I think if you read any of the message boards you will get plenty of speeches but do TPTB listen ? No they do not. They keep their course until the ax falls and then they wonder what went wrong. I read many message boards and have seen many threads about unsatisfied viewers leaving the show, but as long as I can remember such threads existed… that actress is fired therefore I’m quitting watching Y&R, that storyline is horrible therefore I’m leaving the show…the show is beyond boring there’s no point in watching…etc etc. And 2 weeks later many of them are still complaining! Well just quit watching!!! I have been a soap addict for 15 years and I have quit many times myself and for many reasons, the storylines I liked were done, my schedule didn’t allow it, another show caught my attention and so on. That has been how soap viewers have been for decades! I agree that the times are bad and that loosing a viewer can be seen as almost tragic, but that’s the thing with soaps, you tune out and you tune back in.I guess my point is that I don’t see the point in having such a melodrama on quitting watching the show… I’m not trying to offend anybody, it’s just that I don’t understand the whole phenomena… Log in to Reply seattlegirl June 21, 2009 It’s funny that some posters want Ed Scott back writing for the show. Ed Scott has never been a head writer for the show…he was the executive producer, and only worked in the production end. Now in Days he was fired for being accused of changing the scripts around. A lot of people like to point the finger and blame P. Rauch for things. I think P. Rauch is doing a very good job. He means business, he expects his cast to come to set prepared and for them to do their scenes in one take. Given the budget crunches they are under that is exactly what needs to be done. I have seen the acting improve drastically this year. When the cast is asked about P. Rauch they say he is tough but they admire him because he pushes them to bring their best work out. With the exception of a few actors I think he has done that. As far as the writing goes I personally am enjoying MAB as the head writer. I am beyond thrilled that history is being remembered and things aren’t being pulled out of a hat to create a s/l. No matter who is in charge of the show we are all going to not like where one characters direction is going or where the s/l is going. It goes to show you can’t please everyone all of the time. Look how intense the message boards get with shick/phick fans. One group will be happy and one won’t be with the outcomes. Even under Bill Bell (who is an icon) he had his good days and bad days. I’m with the show for the good and the bad and the in between. MAB and team had a lot of things they had to undo that was done under LML’s tenure. I find it interesting that before a s/l even begins people decide that they hate it. How do you know if you would or not, without watching it and seeing the twists and turns that happen along the way. It’s like seeing an outfit on a hanger…you don’t want to try it on because you just know you are going to hate it. Someone presses you to try it on and you absolutely love it. Give things a try before saying all what you hate. We all sat through years of LML why not see where MAB and team are going? Ratings are being mentioned left and right. Sure we can talk about the high ratings soaps had in the late 80’s and early 90’s. We also need to realize we are not comparing apples to apples when it comes to technology. We didn’t have Tivo, DVR, access to the internet (cbs, fancast, etc.). We didn’t have access to read day ahead recaps from our Canadians friends to read and see if it sounded interesting to watch the next day. If we were to take the ratings from those who tivo, dvr, watch on-line who is to say the numbers wouldn’t be the same as they were back in the 80’s and 90’s. It would be like us trying to compare the DOS system to Windows applications. It is night and day. The way we are able to view is night/day as well. I’m sure there was outcry about s/l’s Bill Bell did but it was sent through the mail…unlike today where we have had forums such as this pop up allowing us to communicate with other fans. For those of you who say you are done with Y&R…goodbye. As for me I’m sticking with the show that sometimes I love to love and sometimes I love to hate. It’s like anything else in life you take the good with the bad and get a whole lot in between. Log in to Reply siomonstuart2003 June 21, 2009 The show is going a little to Passionseques for the viewers taste and Y&R is a realistic soap, except for some things. I can’t get behind Adam doing bad things to Ashley is beyond redeemable that I feel that Hogan is taking the character overboard with the gaslighting thing. Now he got a doctor to lie to Ashley about the baby still being alive when we know it is not and how is they to prevent Ashley from going to the hospital for test and getting her belly check out? It is a little far fetched and many fans are turned off on it. I want Adam to get revenge on Jack and Victor, not Ashley. Why isn’t we seeing Neil be a exec of Chancellor? Oh, wait, they can’t write for the AA characters or Neil that he should be trying to steal clients from Jabot and Newman. Log in to Reply Wiggles528 June 22, 2009 I agree with so many that all the writers and producers need to be fired. When Ed Scott was Ex. Producer and they had other writers it was at it’s best. The 4 stooges (Amber, Daniel, Kevin,Jana) need to go – their story is sooooooooo stupid and boring. Also Noah and Eden are stupid. They are willing to keep these idiots and let Nikki walk because of money?!?!?!?!? The mainstay of Y&R is Nikki, Victor and Katherine. Without them – you don’t have a show. I am getting so sick of these stupid story lines aka Adam/Ashley/Victor and the others. The only good one is Cane/Phillip. How do we get CBS to fire the writers and get Ed Scott back? It has not been the same since Bill Bell died and boy- has Bradley Bell made a mess of things at B & B- I won’t even go into how I feel about it. I have just about stopped watching it and am on the verge of stopping Y & R. I left ATWT 2 years ago because it got so ridiculous and with the ecomonic meltdown soaps better be careful. I’m finding more and more that fan reaction to the state of Y&R is Negative. Dead babies running around in bodies…A quadrangle that is quickly becoming boring as it has just about lived long past its usefulness…A Mac Recast that just ain’t working and a rush to rekindle the love between she and Billy…If Lily sleeps with one more white man I will just have to believe those damn rumors. There is no way a white character male or female would date 4 black men back to back on a soap…This angry Jill and all that ain’t even half way believable. Bill Bell knew how to build up to the anger, resentment, loss, and pain…Shit you have about 8+ plus characters who pop on 2 times a month now and most of them have been there for more 5 years–More then 10 even…Y&R is not Y&R anymore. The fine wine has turned into a cheap 9 dolla 7-11 bottle. Y&R does not deserve to be #1 not at this point. Nor does B&B at number two. Bell soaps are now mostly Hell soaps. Mary Jane and Chloe are the only people that has got my interest right now. Maria Hell is not the savior of Y&R. What started out as a good relationship has descended into an “I wish I never knew you” type of feeling. And any fan poll would show about an 80 percent disapproval rating. The message boards continue to show an ever growing hatred of Y&R. Don’t let MS and PB’s acting fool you. This show is on the downward spiral and if they don’t get back to basics soon they will lose viewers. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model June 19, 2009 Ed Scott was good. Maria says “My show my vision..” Well her vision is cloudy at best…” The moment they hired Hogan I was like “Oh God he’s going to ruin the show…” And look what has happened. Get Ed Scott, Sally Sussman Morina, and Kay Alden all back on the writing team and i’m sure Y&R will go back to the character driven stories they use to have. Y&R use to be like Master Piece Theater. They could provide compelling drama without all the “over the top” high jinks that other soaps provided. I use to watch the soaps in this order. Passions first for fun and laughs. Then Days as the buffer between Passions and Y&R. And finally Y&R was like the main event. Y&R was what every other soap needed to model themselves after. It put the D in daytime. It was number 1 for a reason and all other soaps fell at its mercy. See Days could get away with the stuff that doesn’t fly on Y&R. Because Days is that soap! But right now GL is the most realistic soap. And so I watch Y&R first so I can get the mess over with. Move on to Days which lightens my mood. Then get to GL for the main event. A father is who raises and loves you, not who provided the sperm donation. Log in to Reply reggyreg June 20, 2009 Josstheguy, I agree with you. Y&R has dropped somewhat in the quality of writing but it does not deserve to fall by the wayside like GL. Daytime dramas are dying and losing more viewings from the number one soap in daytime will create a domino effect. If the flagship falls then they all will fall. It sounds like David is mad about the direction of the show with regards to the African American storyline. I don’t blame him but it is what it is. I stopped watching GL because I thought 95 percent of the show was bad. With Y&R, about 40 percent of the show is bad. The other 60 percent I can deal with. We should stick with the show. I think it will rebound much it has in the past. Log in to Reply josser June 20, 2009 Reggyreg, I’m loving Y&R. This show has me hooked. I could do with less Scoobies and the Quad of Lies and Sex, and I’ve written extensively about the Winters family. Over all, I love the Ashley/Adam/Victor show, anything with Katherine, Jill, Cane, Nina, Lily, and P3. And a spoonful of Gloria and Jeffrey makes me so happy (because those two are a twisted delight!). I’m sorry that others are digging this but Y&R is SMOKIN’ HOT. I just re-watched the episode where Ashley takes her tumble (thanks CBS.com!). MTS was hilarious with her Voodoo comment. Marvelous acting! My favorite soaps: Y&R, GL, OLTL. None of these soaps makes me cringe as I do when I see B&B, GH, or ATWT. (Haven’t watched AMC or Days in years. Try to pop in. John Aniston is hilarious with his acerbic lines. Hate the whole EJ/Sami thing–unrepentant rapist as a desirable lover? BARF!!) I try to watch bits and pieces of these three. B&B is by the most irritating. The Jackie and Owen story is hot. The rest? Blah. I can’t go through another game of marriage ping pong with Ridge and Brooke. Why bother? These two are 50 years old. If they can’t get their crap together after being married to each other 3 or 4 times, who can? ATWT was actually kind a fun on Thursday. I feel sorry for Roger Howarth. He seems to be playing a caricature of his Todd Manning character. Remember when Paul was a hero? His love for Rose. Now he’s a dopier and more dysfunctional version of his dad James Stenbeck–who might be a sociopath but he wasn’t useless. Dusty needs a shave and a haircut (two bits!). What do folks think the networks will air in place of soaps? Oh, yeah, pathetic game shows, talk shows, and infomercials! Double, triple, quadruple blech! Log in to Reply reggyreg June 20, 2009 Josstheguy, I totally agree with you. I think the networks will have a hard time replacing daytime dramas. It is interesting how some people think the young and the restless is awful while some think it is doing great right now. I guess it is a matter of taste. The only soaps I watch are Y&R and the bold and the beautiful. I think B&B is not doing well right now and I can not stand another Ridge and Brooke break up! Just keep them together and find a man for Taylor (I can’t stand Taylor!)The fire of B&B is no longer there and hiring Don Diamont has proven not to be the answer. The show needs help bad right now. I think overall that Y&R is doing pretty well! Log in to Reply josser June 21, 2009 Fewfew50, I don’t find Y&R depressing at all. It’s actually very exciting for me: 1) I get a thrill out of seeing the Demented Duo, Jeffrey and Gloria. 2) Katherine and Jill are wonderful. The love and hate between them is perfect. Those two might not be mother and daughter by blood but they sure as hell are by spirit and experience! 3) The Ashley/Victor/Adam story is a thriller. It’s twisted and diabolical. (Not to keen on Adam having sex with Rafe because it seems like it will play on lots of anti-gay stereotypes: gay/bi men are depraved, criminal, etc.) 4) The Return of Phillip 3 is going to blow up the Genoa City. I’m so sorry for Jill. She’s going to have her heart ripped apart when she learns Cane isn’t her son. 5) Of course, MTS delivers all the time. She was a hoot the other day when she questioned Gloria about wanting Ashley’s hair for a Voodoo spell. I just don’t find this show depressing at all. ATWT is a pretty gray affair. B&B is just a merry-go-round with no way off. Y&R? Great soap. Just like GL. (Pause for respect to a soon to be fallen friend.) Viewers don’t watch the show like the old days anymore, I myself can count myself lucky if I watch the show on TV once a week and I don’t own a VCR…. For a daytime show, fairs extremely well online. It is time for Nielsen to update their way of counting viewers Log in to Reply josser June 21, 2009 LMME, Thanks for bringing up your points: 11 million viewers online is almost 3 times as many viewers who watch it on TV! That’s amazing! Too bad those numbers don’t add up to real revenue. Advertisers pay peanuts for web ads. As for the African-American actors on Y&R under LML, you’re right about Rowell quitting. But, to be fair, the black actors got a lot more airtime. Of course, LML blew it by refusing to hire Shemar Moore back when he said he’d like to return for guest spots. Moore has the summer off from his primetime show and Malcolm could have had a great storyline. Unfortunately, Y&R seems to be de-investing in actors of color. There are only 2 actors of color on contract with Y&R, Kristof St. John and Christel Khalil. The other actors, Bryton McClure, Eva Marcelle, Yani Gellman and the others are recurring actors who have no guarantee for work. That lack of contract means the show can drop them like a hat or they can walk. It’s not the foundation for a fully developed family. Log in to Reply LMME June 21, 2009 josstheguy, I totally agree about the AA characters being shadows of some sort… I was thinking with another fellow poster of ways to help fix this… one of the ideas we had was to add new blood to the scene because much more storylines could be done than with only a family that has been around for more than 20 years. So we started with the only AA character that was unrelated (by blood that is) to the Winters; Gil Wallace. Gil would have a sister (her name would be Tonya and a nurse) and a half-brother (Derell), due to his father leaving their mom for another woman. Gil and Tonya have dedicated their lives to public service while Derell is a highly ambitious businessman whose in love with nightlife. That is just an excerpt of what we came up with…and I won’t go on because it could last pages! But I talked about it to show what seemed to us an important point, how can a AA family can really flourish while being the ONLY AA (or other minority family that is) family on the canvas? In the early 90’s there were the Barbers, Winters and Hastings… Now they are a merged clan with only a few members left… They need new (unrelated) blood!! Even that storyline harkens back to some of Y&R’s more campy tales, like Victor kidnapping his then-wife’s lover. Last year, I couldn’t stand the whole Sharon/Nick/Brad/Phyllis stuff. I was bored to tears with Adam and Jack scheming for revenge. Finally, this show is cooking with the exception of the Quad of Sex and Lies and art theft snoozer. If you walk away, then you are condemning it to death with no chance for recovery. Things are that bad these days. Why pretend otherwise. I think if you read any of the message boards you will get plenty of speeches but do TPTB listen ? No they do not. They keep their course until the ax falls and then they wonder what went wrong. People are already speaking out, dear.It is now up to the MAB&CO to get it together. ——— I don’t play the torture game. That is just too much stress. Looking at this show makes my blood pressure rise. It’s bad for my health. I ain’t watched B&B since 1991. I stopped watching AMC, GH, OLTL in 1996 and I came back a few times and have left again. Days I only stopped for 2 years before I returned fulltime. I’m with Jamey on this one. No need to waste my time watching anything that is that terrible. Y&R is gonna need to hit 3.0 before they even consider that the mess the got going on is turning fans off. And if they don’t listen with the ratings then oh well I’ll be watching OLTL until its dead end. On the other hand Clips allow me to see Mary Jane and written recaps let me know if there has been much of a change. Just am not a gluten for punishment. I’ve given this show 6 months more than I would have in the past and that was 6 months of hell. If I continue on, my vlogs will become a Y&R hate fest.
