When a Kiss Isn't Just a Kiss: Did Gay Sex Twist Really Cause Engen to Exit Y&R?

More information is coming out— pardon the pun— about the behind-the-scenes drama that allegedly led to Chris Engen (soon-to-be-ex-Adam) bolting from The Young and the Restless in the middle of his contract. According to TV Guide Canada's Nelson Branco's sources, it was the writers decision to have Adam sleep with Rafe (Yani Gelman), that caused Engen to jet quicker than you could say Brokeback Genoa City!

On June 24, fans are forced to say goodbye to Chris Engen as Adam. The next day, Michael Muhney replaces him as Genoa City’s biggest psycho — well, next to Mary Jane and myself! As for Engen, The Suds Report can now reveal, that according to our sources, the reported reason the actor bolted was because he refused to film a scene in which Rafe and Adam have sex, which airs later next week. We didn't want to ruin the story, so we kept the plot twist under wraps by saying it was just a kiss. Yep, that's right — Adam sleeps with Rafe to keep him quiet. And it's not the last time they "do it."

Doesnt change my opinon CE still walked mid-contract. Look Its YR not Queer As Folk. The scene would have had some kisses, clothes removal, laying the bed and then the afterglow. Thats nada.

On QAF most of the actors were straight playing gay and they had them actyally simulating sex.

Im just upset cause if CE never walked I bet this spoiler wouldnt have come out and on June 25th, Rafe and Adam having sex would have been a great Soapy Surprise.

Sidenote, wouldn't a lesbian hookup between Tyra and HEather be something to see? Two hair models muff diving would make my day.

Hell, let's go all the way and have a special episode where all the Y&R go gay. Victor is featured as the onlooker of all the craziness because heaven forbid that Eric Braeden ever cross the line into homosexuality as he finds Nikki and Ashley hooking up, Rafe giving his power bottom best to Adam, Billy and Cane exploring some brotherly love, Amber and Jana whispering sweet nothing to one another while Daniel and Kevin engage in a "Queer as Folk" esque threesome with Devon, and Katherine enjoys a hot romp with Pearl at the diner.

Not only does Mr. Engen NOT know how to honor legal obligations, he is also clearly a homophobe plain and simple. The gay panic ran rampant through that boy the moment he was informed of this plot development. Pshaw to his myspace.com uber lame statement.

Can't wait to see Mr. Muhney take on this role. And Rafe. Smile

OMG! Just wait until my grandma sees that scene, LOL! She's already pissed about the writing and especially Sharon. And she loves Heather so my poor grandma will get mad. Adam cheating on Heather.

Like was said earlier, it's not like they would have showed anything. This is CBS daytime not CineMax. He could have stayed.

I still don't think that CE left the Y&R because he had to have sex/kiss Rafe or any other male, but for the reason he does it!If he was to play a gay character or even a straight man who finds out that he's gay I do not think that he would have a problem, but having sex with another same sex person just to keep him quite,I think that did it.Furthermore from what I've read he wasn't happy with the development of his character generally!Gaslighting the only person who stood up for him,and making her lose her baby was really too much!

Appleridge,

I think Y&R would have dropped spoiler galore about the kiss. Also, Engen's leaving brought a ton of free publicity to the show. How many more gay people are going to watch this show (mistakenly believing a great gay love affair will take place).

As for CE, Y&R has a history itself of breaking actors contracts if it suits them (Brenda Dickerson, Nia Peeples, etc.). Y&R is a business. This is televison. The suits are just as nasty and corrupt as any Wall Street barracuda or Washington politician.

BTW, do you think Eric Braeden would kiss Peter Bergman if the writers wrote it?

Now that would be more realistic. All of the years of hate between Victor and Jack being based on unrequited sexual attraction. Jack and Victor doing the nasty. Slash fiction on the TV screen.

Hmm...Not going to happen if either Braeden or Bergman said no.

I agree that Engen is a homophobe who can't honour his legal responsibilities. Meanwhile, Passions actually had the first man-on-man gay sex scene in daytime back in 2007, and it was pretty revealing--lots of kissing, thrusting, and naked bodies.

Akbad806,

Now why do you assume that Rafe is the bottom? I think it might be easier for Adam to bite the pillow ("oh my God, oh my God, what am I doing!) than have to worry about erectile dysfunction. I don't think Adam has any little blue Bob Dole specials in his secret stash of medicine.

Sadly, I don't Y&R will go the Shick route of cladding Rafe and Adam in black undies and allow them to roll around. It'll probably be a before and after or just a scene of them kissing.

Look at how lame GL is with Otalia. It's one thing for them not to have sex but it's another for them not to even kiss.

Alistair,

Don't you think it's fair to say that the gay community never embraced Chad and Vincent as a couple. There was no talk of Chincent or Vinad. Why do you suppose that is? It took a while before Vincent was revealed to be a psycho.

The fact that they never accepted the Lesbian Couple with Simone as the first African American lesbian in daytime also leaves room for thought. The elephant in the room must be the race.

David,

Simone wasn't the first lesbian on Daytime. Other soaps featured lesbians. All My Children had a lesbian storyline in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

For most of the character's existence on Passions, Simone was a jealous straight girl who wanted Chad. The character was later reinvented as lesbian. But she never got the same publicity as Bianca.

All My Children: "The show made their first attempt at tackling the taboo topic of homosexuality in 1983. Tricia Pursley played the divorced Devon McFadden who believed she was falling in love with her psychiatrist, Lynn Carson (played by Donna Pescow). Lynn admitted to being a lesbian, and Devon admitted her crush."

And, yeah, I think race does a play a factor in the acceptance or celebration of gay couples on soaps. But isn't that the case in general?

I keep thinking of Michael C. Hall. Playing gay didn't hurt his career at all, in fact he's playing everybody's favorite serial killer on Dexter. I loved Six Feet Under and David was my favorite character. Michael C. Hall and Mathew St. Patrick, who played David's love intrest Keith, went full out for that show, and it hasn't hurt their careers and they are both straight men. They made out, simulated sex, I remember thinking how comfortable they must be with themselves and each other to just not care. They loved their jobs. They had no fear there.

Hell, even Al Pacino played a gay man in Angels and Demons. Patrick Wilson was also in that mini, playing a gay man and he's career wasn't hurt by it. He got to act along side the goddess Kate Winslet in Little Children, he was in Phantom of the Opera, Watchman.

If CE has a problem with playing gay and everything else he played on Y&R, then he should just stick to acting in christen films. They make money and he would continue acting what he wants to act. I feel bad for everybody investead in this story, to get a new actor mid-story. To each their own.

I can't wait for this because Adam and Rafe would be hot together and I see more chemistry with Rafe than with Heather. That's my opinion. I hope that if Adam is using Rafe to keep his secret, I hope that he still have some feelings for Rafe because a is a complex villain, but a decent guy even though he is gaslightening Ashley and making Estella take the fall. i still want the good Adam that Hope raise in him.

Who said being an actor means you have to do everything they make you do? Bashing this man for not wanting to do a same-sex storyline is lame.

Its his body and his mind. He's not a slave to the networks just because he signed a contract. He still has to stand by what he produces and whatever the reason, he couldn't stand by that.

If you're for freedom for everyone to be who they want to be, then you have to be that way for everyone. Gay and straight.

It was better for him to leave than be forced to do something and not give it 100 percent. These guys aren't monkeys that jump around for your amusement.

Most gay men don't mind playing heterosexual. Heck, some of them do it in their real lives. But if one had a problem, he has a right to step away from it.

Back off the hate! Chris has every right to step away as long as he's willing to face the consequences.

Hate works both ways and you guys are hating.

I don't think that Chris left because of the kiss. I feel it was, IMO, was more personal in his life than the character. I was going to say he was a homophobe, but I don't think it was it. I wish him the best. I think he couldn't handle the role now.

ok thats all good and find but, HE STILL WALKED OUT ON HIS CONTRACT. not very professional at all, now i would understand if he had the yrs that Eric B. And Peter B. had under there belts but he doesnt, he was a newbie who really wasnt inpressing to many people including Auntie M and Uncle Paul until they gave him one of the best storylines daytime has seen in yrs. (IMO) It's a job acting is a job. i do theatre work all the time and as an actor in some roles i am asked to play not so very nice people but i do it because it's why i started acting in the 1st place to become someone other than myself for a period of time, to to allow others escape there everyday realities and get lost inot another world for a short time. CE has just proved to me that acting is not what he really wants to do with his life. In the Showtime series Queer As Folk over hlaf the actors and actress' in the show were not gay in real life but they were and still are actors , it's a craft a way of life...

I can't believe how INTOLERANT people are being. If Chris couldn't bring himself to kiss another guy, it doesn't make him a homophobe! He didn't sign on for this!

Coercing someone to do something that goes against their own personal ethics in this case is SEXUAL HARRASSMENT, plain and simple. Anyone who doesn't understand this is just as bad as all of those advertising executives from the 60s we watch on Mad Men. Deal with THAT!

And yes, yes, I've heard the argument that actors are sometimes hired to play murderers, and where are their morals then...but they are never expected to actually kill someone. I'm sure Engen could have played someone simulating a same-sex kiss, but to actually do it was not in his comfort zone. Simulating a murder is something any actor could do, but it seems to me too many of you are expecting him to actually plunge a knife into someone else's body. How many actors would agree to do that!?

Be reasonable!

david46208,

Passions did a great job with Simone. However, Passions also did a disservice to Chad. It made no sense for him to be gay suddenly. That decision also cheated fans, black women in particular, out of the same kind of happy ending for Chad and Whitney that Ethan and Theresa received.

Yes, Vincent was the first black intersexed psycho on daytime. But wasn't there something just terribly askew with the fact the lovechild of the show's interracial lovers, Julian and Eve, was a psycho?

Vincent was just another tragic mulatto. The tragic mulatto has been a staple of American literature and film. As has the notion that mulattoes were naturally cunning and devious, representing the worst of both blacks and whites. Vincent's intersex status added to this by making him literally the worst of both male and female, too.

Another myth of the mulatto deals with hypersexuality, a trait Vincent displayed. You do realize that one of the worst villains in "Birth of Nation" was a would-be rapist mulatto, Sylas Lynch?

http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/mulatto/

Have you also considered that Passion had zero black characters that found happy endings with another black person? Zero. Zilch. Nada.

http://tinyurl.com/lkwsnu

P.S.

I know you love Passions but the show just bothered me with its depictions of black men. Chad was the lone black man who showed constant moral fiber but he was exposed as a liar and a cheat. T.C. was mainly depicted as a violent, intolerant man. At the end of show, he accepted Simone but he never found happiness. Vincent, as I explained, represents the worst stereotypes of mulattoes, tragic, psycho, and sexually perverse.

Black women (Eve, Simone, and Whitney) were better represented as being able to overcome the issues in their lives but never to find any happiness with another black person, man or woman.

TV Gord,

I agree with you. Actors have an innate right to be able to control their bodies. People are tossing out everything we learned from the feminist movement and confusing homophobia based in hate with someone's inability or lack of desire to participate in a sexual situation that makes them uncomfortable.

Would people be taking the same stance against a woman whose producers told her that she must suddenly appear nude? It's the same thing here.

Too much of the arguments presented revolve around how terrible it was for Engen to break his contract, as if signing a contract is akin to indentured servitude. It's not.

I think the best thing that happened was for Engen to leave and make way for an actor who was up for the role.

Y&R has replaced actors in mid storyline. Most famously, Y&R dismissed Brenda Dickerson during her contract, replacing her with Jill Walton. More recently, Y&R tried to pull a fast one with Nia Peeples, dismissing her without honoring her contract's notification clause. That would have cheated Peeples out of 13-weeks of pay.
