EMERGENCY RECAST: Patricia Mauceri FIRED; Saundra Santiago Cast as Gay Friendly Carlotta!

This Just InPatricia Mauceri has been reportedly fired from the recurring role of  Carlotta Vega on One Life to Live allegedly due to the star's protests about Carlotta's small role in the upcoming gay storyline between Kyle (Brett Claywell) and Fish (Scott Evans), according to a setside source.

" Carlotta was supposed to have a small role in the upcoming "Kish" storyline. She objected to Carlotta's positive attitude about homosexuality, saying it conflicted with her personal beliefs."

The source goes on to say the role of Carlotta was recast with Saundra Santiago (Guiding Light, The Sopranos, and Miami Vice). Her first tape day was Friday 6/26. Santiago previously played the role of Isobella Santi on OLTL.

UPDATE: Reportedly the soap opera wanted to go against stereotype and show Carlotta as a gay friendly Latina mother. The actress allegedly vehemently protested that story decision, resulting in show brass replacing her.

I don't know what to make of this. It seems that by having gay storylines, the shows are beginning to find out how many people can't separate acting from real life. I'll miss Ms. Mauceri as I know that Sandra is MORE than capable in this part.

But on the other hand, maybe with a more sexy Mama Vega, Carlotta will get more of a storyline...especially if they bring Ray Montes back. Can you imagine THIS Carlotta going toe-to-toe with Dorian, her former employer...? Discuss...

I was thinking the very same thing about SS being a more "sexy" Carlotta and going up against Dorian. If only the show would give it to us!

She objected to Carlotta's positive attitude about homosexuality, saying it conflicted with her personal beliefs.

Does this statement mean the actress' personal beliefs or what the actress feels is Carlotta's personal beliefs? Because if it's her assessment of how Carlotta would feel about homosexuality than I agree with her.

WOW, so did not see that coming. Shame about OR Carlotta but hey the show must go on, welcome Saundra Santiago. Although I have to say that unless Carlotta is going to be turned into the hottest MILF around they need to give her Carmen Santos's helmet hair.

It sounds as if it's Patricia's personal opinion is anti-Kish and she didn't want to play Carlotta as pro-Kish. Jamey, am I assessing that correctly...?

I agree Carlotta would never be pro gay! Carlotta has a long history as a very staunch Catholic, it is just bad writting to have Carlotta in this storyline! why not have Roxy be the one that is backing Kyle and Fish in their relationship!

As a new viewer to OLTL, I'm not yet familiar with the character of Carlotta, but I know plenty of practicing and devout Catholics who ignore their church's teachings about homosexuality and are very gay friendly. So, why couldn't Carlotta be gay-friendly?

Sweet! I am glad they recast and didn't kowtow to homophobic pressure.

Since Sandra is sexier and younger, maybe One LIfe could pair her with Charlie in a love triangle with Viki. Or hook her up with David! This is a great recast!

Question. Does anyone see a backlash coming in daytime from soap fans? Could these "Adam and Eve" soap fans revolt the same way they did back during the Neil/Victoria era of interracial relationships? Or do you think they will be just fine. And if they did revolt what would you suggest the shows do? Pull a Bill Bell and write it out to save ratings or keep it going?

And let me add I'm looking at this from the business side of things.

I see a backlash coming personally. Do I agree with it? No, but I do think it's coming.

Roxy would have been the "easy out" as the "Homosexuality Approving Gal." Although, I do like the antagonistic, yet playful, chemistry between Roxy and Kyle. I can appreciate that OLTL wanted to go in a different direction (and perhaps teach a wider audience something about tolerance) and have Carlotta Vega act as support of the Oliver Fish/Kyle Lewis pairing. So, congratulations to Saundra Santiago and best wishes to Patricia Mauceri.

David, they'll find themselves in a bit of a Catch-22 situation, if they cave to the anti-gay viewers and write out or censor their gay couples, then gay viewers (and gay-friendly viewers) will object, stop watching and possibly even put out a media blitz about their objections. If they do the reverse, continue to portray the gay couples, then the anti-gay crowd will object, stop watching, etc., etc.

I imagine, however, that most viewers will be supportive and that the shows realize, now, that caving to anti-gay viewers is literally being on the wrong side of history. I hope OLTL has the courage to forge ahead with this story, as I'm already loving it.

hmmm. This sounds fishy and I don't mean as in "Fish" the character. Patricia has been on the show for over 15 years and played a lot of crap. She was on the show when Marcy's brother was revealed as gay. She has worked with numerous gay actors and gays behind the scenes (OLTL's headwriter and EP). She has worked in NYC theatre (filled with gays). For a 50something year old woman she didn't get to where she is by being homophobic. There seems to be something else going on that we aren't hearing about.

This is the saddest story I've read in a long, long time. I love Maurceri, and I think she's one of the "heart and soul" characters on the show! We don't get to see enough of her as it is, and now, I don't want to see a younger, sexier Carlotta! Grrrr...

I hope she is saying Carlotta would not be accepting of Kish's homosexuality. If she is saying it's a personal belief that she herself holds, that makes me even sadder. I tend to think she's speaking of the character. You can't be in the entertainment industry and be so closed-minded.

I think it would be interesting to see a core character such as Carlotta show her disapproval, and as season said, let Roxy be the one who's okay with it. Roxy could be okay with it and still be wildly inappropriate in her comments and attidude. That could be hilarious! Carlotta being disapproving could be nicely nuanced, too. She wouldn't have to be portrayed as evil for believing what she believes. If you're like me, you know and love people who are completely intolerent, but you love them anyway, rolling your eyes, but realizing that they are a dying breed who grew up in a different time.

I'm not happy with ABC for taking the easy way out.

It's suspect that these actors never quit or speak up when they kill, have affairs (Which Carlotta did with Clint), molest, rape, and abuse other characters!

Does anyone see a backlash coming in daytime from soap fans?

It would upset me very much if there was a fan backlash considering how easily fans accept rapists being paired with anyone, especially their victims; considering how many of these hetero women just love the violent, hateful, predators who shoot and torture people at will.
It would upset me but not surprise me.

It definitely is against type for Carlotta from what I've seen of her over the years. Interesting the show went that direction. Glasses

As for PM... well, that's too bad. It'll be interesting to see the backlash or other opinions of this situation about her choices and beliefs considering how some others raked Chris Engen over the coals.

Good to hear, but I'm looking at the larger daytime audience. I have this strange feeling that people are getting a little too over zealous about the entire daytime landscape as it relates to gays and lesbians. Majority of daytime fans are women.

Negative press from anti-interracial dating fans didn't seem to hurt soaps at all. And I cite Y&R as the height of it. Fans wrote in and threatened to stop watching the show. This had an affect on all other soaps for a while when trying to go into the area of color blind relationships between black and white. Some years later we had a different reaction.

My thoughts are that too much too soon will get an immediate backlash. Gay press does not hold that kind of power in the soap world.

P&G gave into the Christian Right groups once before over Nuke. So we have to think realistically here.

So I caution the idea that everything will go down just fine.

I'm in the middle of watching this weeks OLTL and just said out loud, I wish they would have cast Sandra Santiago as Markko Rivera's mother instead of Ada Maris. And then low and behold, I read this! Maybe not the character I was thinking of - but it's good to have Santiago on OLTL! Mama Santos becomes Mama Vega! LOVE IT!

How can someone be a working actor in NYC or Hollywood and be homophobic?? Who would you work with???

For a 50something year old woman she didn't get to where she is by being homophobic. There seems to be something else going on that we aren't hearing about.

------------------------------------------------------

It's so easy to jump on the she doesn't like gays bandwagon. However, she is absolutely right that this would be an issue that Carlotta "the Devout Catholic" would have a problem with. When has Carlotta not expressed her opinions concerning what she considers people's bad behavior. I have to go search youtube to see what her reaction to Marcy's brother was. While I doubt the character would be flat out rude and hateful, I can't see her fully supporting and encouraging a relationship that goes against her religion.

I would rather have seen her initially being against the pairing, but eventually becoming tolerant and supportive of the relationship.

This is based on the Carlotta Vega that I have seen over the years.

I wish that we would stop buying the load of garbage that others feed us and start giving people the benefit of the doubt.

From what we are hearing, that was precisely the plan. Not gonna ruin the storyline, but Carlotta WAS slated to have initial problems, then change her tune.

Thanks for the intel Jamey. Smile

Then I am really confused. Like nysam said, she has worked with numerous homosexuals throughout her career and for her to now be allegedly against a gay relationship is strange.

It just seems suspect.
