DC #424: OLTL Casting Shocker

It was the news that rocked the soap-o-sphere this weekend—One Life to Live’s Patricia Mauceri (Carlotta) was fired, replaced by Sopranos and Guiding Light actress Saundra Santiago, after allegedly demanding re-writes of a scene showing her character as gay friendly. Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens, who broke the story, joins Luke, Regan and Karen from WUBS to discuss the shocking turn of events. In other One Life news, Robin Strasser revealed on her hotline ABC has offered her a "take it or leave it" deal, and the soap superstar proclaims One Life executive producer Frank Valentini will save daytime.

OLTL wasn’t the only ABC soap with behind-the-scenes drama exploding all over the Internet this past week. All My Children star Beth Ehlers (Taylor) recently gave an explosive interview to Stardish Radio where she accused AMC head writer Chuck Pratt of "writing camp" and complained about allegedly having to "hedge her performances" due to being paired with real-life and reel life war hero JR Martinez (Brot) whom Ehlers claims "is not an actor". The group sounds off on Ehler’s interview.

On the General Hospital front, Regan slams ABC’s flagship soap for the lackluster exit of Rick Hearst (Ric), while Luke and Jamey react positively to Sonny the Patriarch and Carly asking the Q’s for help. Then Karen provides a helping of her juicy spoilers. It’s an episode you won’t wanna miss!

All this and much more on today’s show.

Great podcast. Jamey, ITA w/ your “The veteran is always better from another show” rant. Value the talented actors you have playing the role fans want to watch.

As for Ms. Mauceri, she must REALLY feel strongly about her beliefs to quit a job, even a recurring one, in this economy. I’m not supporting her actions, I’m just saying if a person is willing to give up a paycheck for something they believe in, they must REALLY feel strongly about it. OLTL was right to fire her and recast, though. People have been asked to play more heinous things w/o qualms, so why should she be any different?

Great podcast. I, also, wish each show would value the vets they have and not covet others. I turn on OLTL for Robin Strasser’s Dorian. I really hope she does not leave the show. I think she is fantastic and I would have to stop watching a show I have followed since 1980.

I do not understand why actors refuse to play scenes particularly when it comes to a gay storyline. I can see an actor saying something when their character’s actions seem out of character. Erika Slezak’s Viki has had plenty of these moments. Heck, Dorian’s drunken scene was not in character. Play your part people.

I haven`t heard the podcast but I think she was right to stand up for her character most gay people do have people who don`t like the idea of gay or just can`t deal with it so way have a hole town that for that`s not being true to character at all.

This is the first time I’ve listened to the podcast and boy, did I pick a doozy! Jamey, your rant was phenomenal! I think even if I disagreed with it, I would have loved it. Your passion is palpable! Well done!

As it happens, I DO agree with you completely on the whole “grass is always greener in the other cast” lunacy that goes on behind the scenes. It’s clear that tptb often aren’t as interested in getting good talent on their show as they are interested in doing damage to the competition…and if they aren’t doing something in the interest the show we’re watching, we fans can usually tell.

Jmaey, you hit it right on the head with Beth Ehlers. I do not want AMC, but I am a Guiding Light fan and watched her scenes as Taylor on youtube, it was hard to watch one of my favorite daytime actresses acting so poorly.

Robin Strasser’s hotline was great (and so was this podcast!).

Once again, the D.C. team delivers a fun, informative and passionate podcast. Based on your explanation of things at OLTL, it was for the best that the show got a new Carlotta. If the actress wanted to make her personal beliefs those of the character, that’s not right in most cases. Clearly this is one.

Thanks for mentioning Robin Strasser’s hotline. Robin Strasser is phenomenal! Her phonecast was great! I wish she would turn it into a podcast. That might save her a few coins.

I’m surprised that you folks have written anything about the details of her message. Ms. Strasser received a low ball offering from ABC and has to make a tough decision. From what she mentioned, when she came back to OLTL, she took a 37% decrease a few years ago. It sounds like ABC wants her to take another significant cut.

Although I want her to remain on OLTL, I understand that this is a very emotional decision.

Has D.C. considered interviewing some of the vets like Strasser?

We’ve interviewed Ilene Kristen, Joe Mascolo, Tristan Rogers, Constance Towers, Victoria Rowell and several other vets. We will definitely keep seeking out the vets.

Robin said that she was making 63% of her previous salary. That means she took a 37% decrease:

    100 – 37 = 63.

Now, ABC wants her to take another big pay cut.

Dorian is my favorite character on OLTL. I’d be very sad if she feels that she can’t afford to stay.
