TV Week Not Feeling ATWT's Latest Casting

Fans aren't the only ones not too keen on the recent hiring of former General Hospital star Stuart Damon (Alan) to As The World Turns. Daytime industry veteran Jonathan Reiner discusses his take on the latest casting development:
Today brings news (via Soap Opera Digest) that Emmy-winning former General Hospital star Stuart Damon (ex-Alan Quartermaine) is joining ATWT in a new role. “ATWT” needs a lot of things -- but one of them isn’t another “GH” actor in a new role.

The soap has almost ten actors on contract with more than 20 years experience -- how about telling stories for those characters (and their kids) rather than cast a big-name actor from another network in a role that no one cares about?

I am skeptical too but its great to see Stuey back on daytime. I am also assuming that some of the money to get all these vets is coming from Guiding Light's cancelation.
So I am looking forward to Stuart Damon and hopefully he wuill bring fans with him. Lets not hate Stuart just because he accepted a role.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Stuart on ATWT, and I think there are others out there as well that feel the same.

I've only ever watched one soap and that's GH. I'm following Stuart to ATWT. So it's gonna get me watching it. Will I stay after Stuart leaves? Well, that depends on whether the soap hooks me or not.

ATWT is doing carzy stuff. With their express story telling he will be gone before the end of the year!

I completely agree with TV Week. I think Stuart Damon is a great actor and hold nothing against him of
course, but they are doing the same thing at ATWT as they are doing at Days. They're paring down the cast only to bring in big name actors like Crystal Chappell and Wally Kurth. Great actors need a job, but the logic that these producers use is a joke. I don't know if anybody else has read the interview with Ken Corday, but it's infuriating. He's asked the question, "Why did you get rid of Patch and Kayla and John and Marlena?" and gives the smart-alec answer, "That was then, this is now" as if to dismiss the audience. The ratings may be decent now because all the other soaps basically suck, but it's going to come back to bite him in the butt. Just my opinion though.
At least The Young and the Restless hasn't started doing this yet, with the exception of Don Diamont.

Whoops. Meant to say that As the World Turns could do the same thing as Days. So far I haven't seen that though.

I think it is crass to take this announcement to make a point.
Make your point and then comment on the news at hand.

I know that manners are overrated, but frankly SD does not deserve that kind of crap!

I only have contempt for people putting their agenda ahead of being a nice human being!

But Wally and Crystal are going back to roles they created and were popular, Stuart Damon is creating a whole new character. I'm just happy that a veteran actor is getting work, there's such a stigma against older actors in soaps at least we know that hopefully some of the wonderful vet actors from GL might have a chance other places unfortunately ATWT is the main one hiring them right now but still.

Wow I love this site but I don't think we need to be attacking Stuart Damon here. The man is a great actor and he does have a family to support. I'm definitely willing to give the man a chance even though he should by all rights never been let go by the idiots at GH.

I have never watched an episode of ATWT but will certainly add it to my DVR to catch SD. If anything it's the writers on these shows and executives like Bloom and Frons that are killing daytime. Please don't blame a talented actor for taking a paying gig.

Who the Hell is attacking Stuart Damon? Where are you people getting that?

The article was about WT bringing in many name soap actors in new roles, which the author rightly called stunt casting, and failing to service the characters and actors that have been part of the show for over 20 years.

If you were a OLTL fan and they started suddenly bringing in people from shows you never watched and had Viki AND Dorian AND Bo AND Nora AND Todd on LESS THAN ONCE A MONTH, wouldn't you be upset?

AMC fans substitute Erica AND Adam AND Tad AND Angie AND Jesse
GH fans substitute Monica AND Tracey AND Luke AND Sonny AND Jason

Well that's what World Turns fans feel like when we don't get Bob and Lisa and Tom and Margo and Holden. Get it now?

I love Stuart Damon and am glad to see him working again, but what bothers me is this ridiculous industries genre-killing penchant for salivating over the stars of its competitors when most of these soaps don't value their own veterans. How much you wanna bet GH's ratings would be up if Stuart Damon, Lynn Herring and Jon Lindstrom were on that canvas? Did anyone notice what losing Martha Byrne did to ATWt's numbers? Where are John and Andy Dixon? ATWT is DYING. I am sure their core fans would rather see their own beloved vets. I have never really been that diehard an ATWT fan, so it is great for me to see my Lucy Coe and Alan Q in Oakdale, but I bet the people who've watched for decades would rather see Iva Snyder.

Kurth and Chappell will probably make a 1/3 of Dierdre Hall used to make on Days. Remember, Days cut Hall and Hogenstyn to reduce the shows budget by 40%. Both actors made almost a $1 million/year. Chappell and Kurth might earn between $200K to $350K if they're lucky.

As for Stuart Damon, if his new part brings him into orbit as a love interest for Lisa, Barbara, etc., that would be great.

Isn't it weird how Y&R can use its over 40 actor to such great effect? Katherine, Jill, Victor, etc. are all involved in intriguing stories. Most of the other soaps are clueless. The stories that least excite me on Y&R belong to the younger actors (the so-called Scoobies). I really love Jeffrey and Gloria, the Demented Duo.

ATWT writing is pretty weak. Hopefully, the show can turn itself around.

I'm not that interested in it now. Carly, Meg, Dusty, and Paul are very annoying.

It seems a tad bit hypocritical to applaud Lynn going to ATWT but make such a negative fuss about SD going there. DC is always making stunt/dream casting threads. It seems DC just changed their stance as soon as SD got hired.

I'm sure SD (Lynn, John, Wally, etc) are all making cents on the dollar compared to what they made as long time vets on GH but I don't blame them for taking a paying gig.

From what I can tell most of the GH audience could care less about Martha Byrne. GH fans want to see the Q's.

Well said Snizzle. Weren't most of the people here loving the fact or even gushing over the fact that Lynn Herring was heading over to ATWT? What's all the fuss? Love thy vet...yes but if some other show wants to love him, there's a firestorm around the vet hiring?

If Stuart were a no name heading over to ATWT for a month, would there be so much fuss? He's an actor and he got a job on a soap. Did we make all this fuss when Jon Lindstrom joined the show? No, it was...he's returning to daytime...yay.

Is this stunt casting? I'd like to think that somebody over at ATWT realizes the idiotic mistake the GH producers made when they let him go. Stuart's a good actor. Why is a show being criticized for hiring an Emmy award winning actor who's been in the biz for a very long time. Maybe, just maybe, this can get somebody over at ABC to look at the value of their actors.

I, for one, am extremely happy to see Stuart back on television. He's been off air since December 23 (yes, I am counting) while we've been subjected to the crap once known as GH. Do I wish he was Alan Q on GH? Of course...but if I can't have has an alive or dead Alan, I'll take Stuart in another role in a flash.

Let's see what his storyline is before we crucify the producers for hiring him.

I really don't care if this "gets somebody over at ABC to look at the value of their actors." I only care about the show I have watched for nearly 30 years. And I want to see Andy and Hope Dixon, Chris Hughes, Lien Hughes, Aaron Snyder, et al. And I want Martha Byrne and Scott Bryce back as Lily and Craig.

I don't want some "name" from General Hospital, One Life to Live, All My Children, or Port Charles sucking up more air time like Roger Howarth, Cady McClain, and Marie Wilson.

So Jeff, if was a "no-name" sucking up the air time, would it be more acceptable? If they just introduced a character and he was played by Joe Schmo plucked out of Equity, would it make a difference?

Even in the hey day of General Hospital, new characters had to be introduced to interact with the old ones. Now, granted, all soaps seem to be ignoring their existing characters in favour of new ones lately, but sometimes, depending on storyline...it can be a good thing. If a newcomer can stimulate the storyline of an often ignored veteran character, then how is that bad?

My point here is...how can we criticize this casting without even knowing the first thing about the storyline he'll be part of and who he'll be interacting with??

No, a "no-name" would not be acceptable. I don't really buy that they are creating roles first and happen to keep hiring former ABC stars. It seems pretty obvious they are hiring "names" first, not merely filling roles.

And not all soaps are ignoring their existing characters in favor of new ones. Look at Y&R. And they are #1.

New characters are essential, obviously. And it would be great if Lynn Herring, or Judi Evans, or Stuart Damon gave new storyline to the characters longtime fans have been longing to see more of, but the track record of WT under the Goutman regime is not good. After 10 years even the most optimistic person becomes a pessimist.

Gosh Jeff, you sound like a GH fan more and more. Optimistic describes most GH fans this past decade too and it's only recently that some of us have turned into pessimists. Welcome to the club of eternal optimists - NOT. Funny how eternity really does have an end point when it comes to soaps.

I can't say that I'll enjoy ATWT when I start watching it (for Stuart) but I will enjoy seeing him on the screen. I think us Stuart fans are feeling a bit battered and bruised these last 24 hours seeing all that's been written that not everybody shares our joy in seeing him get some on screen time. It sort of dampens the mood for some of us who are very excited about this news. Ah well...we'll see what happens in September.

I heard from a very reliable source Stuart Damon will only be commuting to NY for about a month to tape his scenes for ATWT. Apparently he will be working with his pal Julie Pinson among others.

He's apparently thrilled to be working again.

I doubt his one month on ATWT is going to take away anyone's job. I wish the writers would start giving their long characters some real storylines but the veteran actors seem to be getting the shaft throughout daytime.

I love Stuart Damon, he played the only Quartermaine I ever liked. I cheered his character on everytime he tried to kill Momica, and everytime he cheated on that skank and left her for another woman. I was very said when GH let him go. That said, just because I love the actor, doesn't mean I'm gonna watch ATWT. I won't tune in at all. I love Julie Pinson, but I won't tune back into ATWT. I don't begrudge him work at all, good for him to get work. But I agree with TV Week. I use to watch ATWT many moons ago but then dropped it one summer and never went back. It's the only soap I never had a desire to tune back in for. All the best to SD.
