RUMOR REPORT: Is Production of All My Children MOVING to Los Angeles?

Several sources have come forward, revealing to Daytime Confidential that ABC Daytime is strongly considering moving production of All My Children to Los Angeles!
"This has been talked about for quite some time," says one source. "It would be so much cheaper to produce the show in L.A., because they can build permanent sets. That's one of the reason's it is so expensive to do shows in New York, because you have to pay the Union workers to come in and break downs sets every day."
The big question is, would New York-based ABC veterans like Susan Lucci or Michael E. Knight move to L.A.?
"The network is getting to to the point where they have to do something to keep the shows profitable, so if they lose a few stars with the move, that's a risk they are willing to take," says a second mole. "A few years back there was talk of moving One Life to Live to Florida, but the network backed off because much of the veteran cast refused to move."
Reportedly this move would prevent ABC from having to cancel one of its three soap operas for the time being.
"That Aisha Tyler Show was definitely planned for the ABC Daytime lineup," says a source. "People at all three soaps were definitely worried, no matter what was said in the trades."
The mole is referring to the Hollywood Reporter article claiming a planned talk show vehicle for Aisha Tyler was rumored to be slated for ABC's daytime lineup, a claim ABC denied.
According to an additional source, despite recent ratings woes, ABC's flagship soap General Hospital is the safest soap on the network's lineup, because GH is the most proven brand.
"GH may be the lowest rated ABC soap right now, but historically it's the lineup's most popular soap, it will be the last one to be cancelled," says an insider. "All My Children is considered the legacy soap, even though One Life to Live is older and was the first soap Agnes [Nixon] created for ABC, because AMC has iconic characters played by people recognized outside of the soap world. One Life's problem is it never created those types of superstar characters. Moving AMC to LA will actually buy both soaps time."
Those in the know say an announcement from Brian Frons about AMC's potential move could come at any time.

Wow. So then...OLTL would be the only NYC based ABC soap?
I guess I could see the logic of moving, but...wow.
And I could have guessed that GH would be the last to be cancelled. It might be struggling now (because they refuse to let go of the HW/EP, for some reason) but it's definitely the historic MVP of the ABCD line up.

Not to worry, GH will be gone soon. March 2010

i don't think i'd mind the switch if it didn't mean that oltl wouldn't be able to do any crossovers anymore but they it could possibly do a few crossovers with GH and it would make returns easiers for actors like Rebecca Budig, Eden Riegel, and James Mitchell.

That shows you right there how stupid the ABC daytime execs are if they cancel the highest rated soap simply because its not a legacy soap or the "proven brand" at GH I hate to say this but I think the proven brand days are over they've squandered their history.

Well, I think that it should move to LA. I don't know if the cast will go with it, but if not it won't be a AMC to air if it doesn't move to LA.

That would be cool. Hopefully it ups the production value. Maybe they'd drop that awful "filmized" look.

I think its ridiculous that GH is considered so untouchable. It's the most expensive soap and has been losing viewers at a faster rate than the others yet they'll still cancel it last.

If the production is cheaper than they should move to LA. It would be easier for those like Eden Reigel, Rebecca Buding, and James Mitchell. If he show would change writers and let go some of the people I will really be all for it. But what would really happen if New Yorkers like Susan Lucci and Micheal E. Knight decide not to move? The show wouldn't be the same.

AlistairCrane,
Isn't the "filmized" look just high-definition?
What would ABC do for people on AMC who own homes? Would the network by the homes of its actors who can't sell them in this market?
Why not move production to New Jersey or Connecticut? Didn't Connecticut give NBC a huge cash deal to move production of the Jerry Springer show there? New Jersey did something for MSNBC I thought.

Thanks! I remember when AMC switched to FilmLook and just thought the show started using HD.

Well, the show has to do something because the ratings is terrible and if not we won't have an AMC to watch.

I posed this question on Jamey's Facebook page, in an attempt to clarify a previous question that I had inarticulately botched:
If AMC [were to move] to LA (where production is indeed cheaper and studio facilities more spacious than [NY]), would ABC ALSO consider moving OLTL to LA given the current economic (and ratings) environment?
We all know OLTL is the little engine that could, with Valentini reportedly bringing the show in under or on budget consistently enough that the studio has been able to go dark a couple of times this year. However, is that enough for ABC or would a move to LA for OLTL make it even more cost efficient/effective?

Reading between the lines, it seems OLTL may be on the chopping block. Am I being too fatalistic?

No If Thuis True It will buy Both AMC and OLTL More Time. Even though GH is lower ratings wise that show is SAFE!!!

lilyredd I'm feeling the same way you are, even though OLTL's ratings are higher reading between the lines it sounds like its the show on the chopping block which is just crazy AMC is a shell of its former self and GH well its not even GH anymore the mob that was once a welcome addition to the show has taken over its one of those ABC daytime things that doesn't make sense. Are they only considering AMC or both OLTL and AMC? If they are just considering AMC then those of us who are fans of OLTL should be worried.

Hey hey now folks...... If it gets them more time on the air go for it. Hell it could've been worse.. It could be... PEAPACK!! We saw how THAT ended up.... Can ya'll imagine La Lucci running around out there? Nuh uh! In the name of Agnes Nixon I would be holding a march to fire if that happened!

This could be good for AMC. It's total BS that GH will be the last soap standing, evn though it's the lowest rated of the two.

Hasn't AMC been incorporating more outdoor scenes in their show recently? I wonder if they are trying to put off a push to move west by making better use of their NYC locales.
I would be sad to see AMC leave NYC, but I guess change is inevitable in the new reality of inevitable soap extinction. It would be a way to dump some of those big salaries in a way that would let everyone save face. If Susan Lucci can say she doesn't want to move west, it could be a graceful way for her to "move on".
It has always made me chuckle that GH is supposed to be set in upstate New York, yet it's shot in California. I guess AMC moving out there would add a nice exotic feel to the Pine Valley Ocean.

Let's skip L.A. completely and just move to Hollywood North AKA Vancouver. Filming in Canada would save even more money. I'm sure Canadians will gladly welcome Cameron Mathison back.

Ummmmm........ do they think that will help??
They need to MOVE Ryan and the Lavery's to the Back Burner...they need to get a MOVE on and re-sign Julia Barr.
They could film this crap in a garbage truck or the Taj Mahal. The writing has suuuucked for a long, long time. That's why I bailed.
And don't even get me going on Aisha Taylor. I find her so annoying.
THANK GOD for CBS - -err, Y&R!!

I don't really buy the OLTL cancellation talk. Frankly, the only reason OLTL would be cancelled over the other two (at the moment) is ABC choosing brand-name/legacy over ratings. If networks made decisions based on legacies, 'Guiding Light' would still be on in October.

Actually I agree with petitejolie on this one. It makes even more sense to move all soap production to Canada...we've got more production grants for film makers and I'm pretty sure its still cheaper than filming in either New York or California. You'd think the younger actors would welcome the chance at working in Hollywood-town as they would be a lot closer to film roles and all that jazz however most films/shows now a days are filmed up north...
It would be another reason for me to visit Vancouver again!
