Chappell Says Otalia's Lack Of Intimacy "Unbelievable"

Crystal Chappell revealed her thoughts to soap journalist Michael Fairman regarding Guiding Light's choice to show just a tiny speck of intimacy between the popular couple "Otalia."

MICHAEL:

Any other moments that did not ring true for Otalia that was not a great twist on the story?

CRYSTAL:

To get back to your earlier question, there should have been more affection between the two women after they admitted their feelings and had the sex conversation. (She laughs) If anything, it’s unbelievable that there was not a little more affection shown.  I have had these conversations with people where they go, “I don’t want to see them slurping kissing,” and I go, “Well, I don’t want to see two dogs kiss like that. You know what I am saying?  I don’t want to see two people slurping and slopping, either.”  I think people get things in their minds about love scenes and that they have to be tasteless.  What I think would have been wonderful is just a simple romantic mutual kiss. It’s almost the simpler the better.  That would have been my choice, not that there is anything wrong with some good hot stuff.  I think it’s the image of what people have in their heads.  I think you have to swing it back and have it all somewhere in the middle, and be open to that, and then it’s a really beautiful thing.

Chappell later went on to discuss what's in the works for her reprised role as Carly Manning on Days of Our Lives

MICHAEL:

Peter Reckell (Bo) told me on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmys, he was so looking forward to having you back on the show.  Can we assume a triangle is in the works?

CRYSTAL:

All I know is what we have now.  When Carly comes back she is not available to Bo, it’s more as an old friend.  There has been no sense of anything romantic. Where they go with it, I don’t know.

Carly comes back as a "friend"? Seriously? What's the point then? I love Hope and was hoping this story line and character would jump start things for Bo and Hope. They have been on the backburner for SO long and the "psychic visions" story was a dud from beginning to end. I thought the point of Kristian and Peter taking the pay cuts a while back was for the show to keep the favorites on the show and maintain viewers, not tease us endlessly with lame stories left and right and slowly kill these characters. Come on DAYS!

CC´s cháracters can't get any loving. Fist she is a chaste lesbian on GL and now she is Bo's friend.
I agree with snags, what the heck is the point to bring back Carly if they aren't gonna have a triangle?

Otalia should've been canned the minute GL weren't gonna have the pair show any affection. Watching them awkwardly buttheads has been a distraction to a once beautiful story. I'll never know what the heck happened.

The lack of intimacy between two characters that are supposed to be romantically involved is just ridiculous considering we had episodes where everyone and their mother were making out like crazy and what were Otalia doing? Umm, holding hands and patting each other on the back. Yeah. What the hell was that?!

Seriously, we're not asking for a huge steaming makeout session although that is not out of the realm of possibility when it comes to a DAYTIME show, god knows we've seen enough steaming makeout sessions between heterosexual characters.

All we were asking for was a simple short kiss. A peck on the lips, if you will, to show the audience that yes, these two people love each other, they do what any other couple in love do. They show affection and it doesn't have to be tacky or done for a ratings stunt, it can be just what it is.

Anyone remember how Willow and Tara on Buffy the Vampire Slayer first kissed? It was that of comfort - after Buffy's mother had died and it was shown as a way two lovers comforted each other. It was beautiful and absolutely meaningful and Guiding Light could have done something similar. God knows the writers could have found a way to make it beautiful. Hell, forget the writing. There were plenty of scenes where a simple kiss on the lips would have been appropriate, but here's a couple:

- When Olivia came to the hospital for Nat's sonogram. Perfect moment in the end after Olivia said when she said she couldn't waist any more time. In fact, a kiss was missing from that scene. We got a damn head bump. WTF?!

- When Olivia said yes to moving back in to the farmhouse with Natalia. Perfect moment. A quick kiss on the lips.

Both perfect moments to show a little affection. No need for a huge makeout session, but not even a single short kiss? What the hell?! So what, if it's not done for a ratings stunt, it can't be done at all? Nice, CBS. Nice.

I'm really glad they're not immediately going to go for the Hope/Bo/Carly triangle. Carly Manning as a character and Crystal Chappell as an actress deserve better than to be supercouple roadkill. The shelf life of a mere interloper, who a lot of the audience probably don't remember or didn't watch 16 years ago, is too short. They need to give her at least a few months before sticking her into any sort of triangle, otherwise it'll just be another contrived mess where the conclusion is foregone. Carly's way more than just Bo's ex!

I agree with you amcfan - I don't want Carly on DOOL just to stir things up for Bo And Hope. CC deserves better than that. That is how she began on GL - coming between Reva and Josh and then she never got a SL up to her abilities until Otalia years later. I have watched Bo and Carly via YouTube and they are terrific together but as I've said before CC would have chemistry with Whistler's Mother so please give her a strong story of her own - don't make her an appendage of super couple Bo and Hope.

I'm in complete agreement with amcfan..Carly was just not an ex for Bo, she is not Billie or Hope. It took a long time for Bo to declare his love for her and she never wanted to take Hope place in Bo's life. CC deserved a good s/l. This is the time for PR to go back to his character as Bo Brady, he is going to have some conflict in his life because his feeling towards his wife Hope and those for Carly. However, both Carly and Bo were or are in a relationship with other people and they will show respect..well I hope the writer do that! A friendship would be perfect! If that become more well sometimes that happen! Wink Remember those old DOOL fan...Marlena and John? I can't wait to see Peter and Crystal together again.

You can't satisfy everyone. I got to think in the cuspe of equality, any gay story has to make up for its inequality. A little intimacy wouldn't do. What Crystal said on Good Day L.A. about it and being positive about it and saying it could be a good thing and that it can show stereotyes about gays being overly sexual is a generalization and all is a good way to look at it. Be positive about it if you can believe the coupling.

I don't get the couple, because the lack of intimancy goes against the character of Olivia. And I think they jumped too fast anyways. I think Olivia being gay had to be a very drawn out process.

As for Carly, I don't know the couple as well as some. Seen some of them. It's been fifteen years though. Of course, if I was sleeping with Carly for awhile and then didn't for 15 years and saw her again, I think I would think of her more than as a friend or maybe not much as a friend at all depending on how it ended (Of course, if I was getting from Hope and Billie, I think my perspective might be different). I guess a fresh start isn't hard to fathom here as long as there is something in their bones that draws them closer or even further away.

Lets not forget also that for the past 16 years she's been happily married to Lawrence (well Crystal said they had there ups and downs) so I can't see the character of Carly jumping into a triangle with Bo/Hope that quickly I think that they are going to incorporate Carly into the cast and have Bo get to know her again before they have anything like a romance I think Crystal said there would be a romance for months and thats a good thing I'm tired of characters coming back or getting introduced and then a week later are in a "torrid" triangle.

Crystal speaks sense on the kiss. I commented on the Ellen Wheeler article.

Soap actors don't know where their characters are going to go. she just started on Days, it makes sense they are not going to play a big 'romance' right out of the box.

Crystal is not a professional lesbian. Days is a couples show. They are going to pair her up with a man eventually and logically it would be Peter. They have a history and I can imagine them as a pair.

There aren't too many men in her age range- I can't picture her with anyone else right now. A little worried about that for her, but will see how things develop.

People who don't want her in a story with Peter or any man are wishing her on backburner no storyline or bit player or out of a job.

For some reason I see them trying to pair her up with Dr. Daniel forget Chloe I don't think I wanna see it but it might happen since they've paired him up with everyone else. I wanna see Bo and Carly I'm not gonna lie but I'm afraid in the end they'd sacrifice her to the "Bope" alter and ruin her character and after seeing her play a "spoiler" character for many couples on GL I hope that doesn't happen on Days.

Gooby, you're absolutly right with the comparison to Willow and Tara. That's all we want just a little comforting kiss. Good point!
