HomeTVOne Life to LiveThree Questions: One Life to Live’s Ilene Kristen Says NOH8! Jamey Giddens October 9, 2009 One Life to Live 9 Comments One Life to Live’s Ilene Kristen (Roxy) is speaking out against the ban on gay marriage in California by participating in photographer Adam Bouska‘s NOH8 Campaign. The campaign has featured several soap faces, including The Bold and the Beautiful’s Brandon Beemer, Days of Our Lives’ Nadia Bjorlin and Michael Muhney of The Young and the Restless. I recently caught up with the Ryan’s Hope alum and asked three quick questions about her involvment in the campaign, her character’s relationship with OLTL’s gay hunk Kyle (Brett Claywell) and both Kristen’s and Roxy’s beliefs on gay marriage. Daytime Confidential: So what made you decide to participate in the NOH8 Campaign? Ilene Kristen: I’m a straight, unmarried woman, but I very much believe that if a gay couple really loves each other and want to get married, why shouldn’t they have the same rights as straights? It is ridiculous at this point in time that this should even be an issue. Come on America, get hip already! This campaign is great. Get the word out, in a big way! Daytime Confidential; On One Life to Live, Roxy has become pretty chummy with openly gay med student Kyle (Brett Claywell), even encouraging gays in Llanview to let their "freak flags fly." What would she make of Adam Bouska’s NOH8 campaign? Ilene Kristen: I think Roxy would say to Kyle, ‘I like men, why shouldn’t you?", and let’s get as may people as we can to pose! Daytime Confidential: With so many soap stars, who come into our living rooms every day, taking a stand for same sex couples to be allowed the right to get married, do you think it is helping American TV audiences become more accepting of gay and lesbian couples? Ilene Kristen: Yes, I do, but it’s a big country, and a lot of people have views about this kind of thing that are very foreign to me. I always ask the question, "Why do you care if same sex couples get married? Does it infringe on your life?" Check back with Daytime Confidential.com next week for a lengthier interview with Kristen, who will be performing as the musical guest for ACME Saturday Night in Los Angeles on Oct. 17! 9 Responses appleridge October 9, 2009 Ilene Kristen Kicks Ass!!!! Like it show says, “We only have One Life To Live”. Log in to Reply syworld82 October 9, 2009 the two facts that bothers me is the simple ads themselves.. I HATE that STRAIGHT people feel the need to say HEY its OK they can get married now…and another thing that bothers me about this article.. HELLO.. BRETT CLAYWELL is STRAIGHT.. HE PLAYS A GAY CHARACTER.. I WOULD HAVE RATHER U TALKED ABOUT GAY CHARACTER AND ACTOR OLIVER FISH PLAYED BY SCOTT EVANS OR JUST OMIT THE WORD “GAY” when referring to Brett Claywell as a Hunk..because a gay hunk he is not Log in to Reply appleridge October 9, 2009 They were tallking about Kyle Lewis Being a Gay Hunk and he is played by Brett Claywell Ilene, Brett, Scott & Nick have all been outspoken on gay marriage rights. You dont have to be gay to want marriage equality for all and Im sorry but if folks think you do, we are not any closer that the equality goal than we were 20 years ago. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens October 9, 2009 Kyle is the gay hunk in reference, not the actor who plays him. I talked about Kyle, because that’s who Roxy shares her scenes in this storyline with, and these straight actors who are saying this, have always said it. It’s no different than Brad Pitt or George Clooney. White people marched on Washington to help blacks gets civil rights, as did Jews. They are part of the solution, not the problem, it boggles my mind that anyone could find this anything but helpful to the cause. I have several gay and lesbian friends and it’s not just about whether or not they can get married, it’s also about letting them have the same benefits as straight married couples, such as health insurance coverage, pension benefits, life insurance, etc. Kudos to Ilene and other actors for speaking out. Log in to Reply Llanview76 October 10, 2009 I’m gay, and I love Ilene Kristen, and love her now…and knowing her, she’s a Leo, she’s going to strut her stuff and set an example of what it means to LIVE and LOVE!
