Crystal Chappell Brings Sexy— And Ratings— Back to Salem

Crystal Chappell's first full week back on Days of Our Lives after almost two decades proves you definitely can go home again (SON). DAYS went up 112,000 total viewers as the troubled Dr. Carly Manning aka Katerina Von Leuschner-Alamain headed back to Salem the week of Oct. 5-9. DAYS is up an incredible 519,000 viewers year-to-date. The super soap went up one-tenth of a point in households and is up three-tenths of a point for the year in that demo. Among the coveted women 18-49 demographic, DAYS went up one-tenth of a ratings point and is also up year-to-date one-tenth of a point.

DAYS' corporate cousin The Young and the Restless (both soaps are co-owned by Sony, and DAYS' production company Corday Productions, Inc. owns a percentage of Y&R) lost 19,000 total viewers over the week, but was still up year-to-date 39,000 viewers. Y&R held steady in households and among women 18-49. The Bold and the Beautiful went down 3,000 viewers, and was down
year-to-date, a staggering 351,000 total viewers, that's more than any other soap on the dial. B&B held steady among women 18-49, tied at the soap's all-time low in that demographic. As The World Turns gained 31,000 total viewers, but dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households. ATWT went up one-tenth of a ratings point among women 18-49. As for the now-defunct Guiding Light's replacement, the Wayne Brady-fronted Let's Make a Deal averaged a 1.6 household rating for its first half hour, and a 1.5 for its second half hour. While LMAD being lower rated than all the soaps is definitely something to be happy about, the fact that a game show which costs a fraction of what it does to produce a daytime drama, came within one-tenth of the household rating point of the lowest rated soap, doesn't exactly bode well for the sudsers, or their diehard fans.

Over at the Mouse House, All My Children gained 25,000 total viewers and managed to hold steady in households, tied with both of AMC's sister sudsers in households. AMC went up one-tenth of a ratings point among women 18-49. Daytime's best soap opera, One Life to Live dropped 63,000 total viewers. OLTL held steady in households and among women 18-49. General Hospital lost the most total viewers for the week of Oct. 5-9. GH shedded 125,000 total viewers over the week. GH went down one-tenth of a ratings point in households, but held steady among women 18-49.

I am blown away by AMC. My only thought is that fans knew that the Zendall reunion and ILYs were coming and that gave them a boost coupled with the promise of the who killed Stuart reveal. So lame. Could that who done it be any more obvious. And talk about lazy that they dont even try to hide Kendall's baby bump. Its kind of distracting IMHO, it makes me think of the actress when I am suppose to be thinking about the character. I also wonder if fans are maybe tuning in one last time before the move to see some of their old favorites before the show ends. I really wish VI wasnt making the move - with Zendall gone, had VI left too that would have been the end of it for me (since they write Jessie and Angie as supporting bit players anyway.)

you can count me as 1 of the "new" viewers to Days. Used to watch, stopped for a bit, but now that carly is back - so am I. also, loving the babyswitch reveal.

I am also watching Days again. It has improved a great deal over the past few years. Maybe the writers and management at Y&R could learn a thing or two

I am brand a new viewer when it comes to Days of Our Lives and started watching for Crystal Chappell. I have watched many of the other soaps for years...but first time watching Crystal as Carly on Days.

I tuned in, but they lost me after Carly's first three episodes. I want to see her interact with Bo and people from the past, not Rafe. Plus, there have not been enough classic Carly flashbacks to re-establish her on the show.

It really pains me to say it.... and I feel horrible admitting it but.... I preferred AMC over OLTL for the first time in months last week Sad I dunno what it was but something just wasn't there on oltl for me last week. I could barely make my way through it. I think the main reason is the Matthew surgery SL. I just find it more boring than watching paint dry. And Greg not wanting to do it is draggggging. But I was thankful for some Kim in the mix this week. But I have to give it to AMC this week. Love my Annie!

The Matthew surgery story has turned Bo and Nora into evil jerks. Just let the kid get his surgery. I'm on his side.

The only other story that sucks is Tea/Todd/Blair. Blair's a bitch, Todd's an egomaniac, and both Blair and Tea are pathetic for fighting over a rapist. Please bring back Patrick Thornhart!

I'm an Olivia/GL fan who followed Crystal Chappell to DAYS, which I watched back in the '80s. I'm frustrated by her lack of screen time so far, but I assume things will change when Carly finally makes it to Salem.

While I miss GL badly, I'm enjoying the novelty of watching a soap that isn't always dead-last in the ratings.

Count me as a new viewer for Days because of Crystal Chappell but i am getting a little bored with the story. I hope things pick up a little with this storyline. But she looks great and I am a CC fan forever. I hope Days catches B&B soon.

Crystal Chappell won me over on GL and I am now watching Days of Our Lives just to see her phenomenal acting skills as a new(past) character. I hope those in charge recognize her talent and drawing power and write her an amazing story! Thanks Crystal!

I can see why OLTL lost viewers. Sick of Greg's whiny behind. Sick of Matthew and his parents. Sick of Tea/Todd/Blair thing. It's really annoying to see Blair fighting so hard for Todd. There is just so much Dorian/David and even Ross could do. This month hasn't been very good.

Not enough Liz on GH and tooooooooooooooo much Olivia!

I'm watching Days online purely for Crystal Chappell. Can't say that I've been overly impressed yet. Watching Crystal is always a delight, especially the whole stabbing Lawrence bit, but these constant flashbacks were annoying...if I was goldfish with a 3 second memory, it would have been fine!! I don't like the production model...so used to GL's and also GL's was the same production model as we use for our soaps in Europe. The writing better improve for Crystal as well....well all know what a phenomenal actress she is, but she needs to be given the right material to really shine.

Good For DAYS!!! The show is rebounding so much, I am a "new" viewer agian, and there isn't a bad story on the show! Carly's return is amazing as well, can't wait to see how it all unfolds!
I wish ATWT ratings would go up, except for the mess with "As Port Charles Turns" Ralph and Audrey the show is doing great. I absolutly love Noelle Beck now as Lily, i wish Judi Evans wasn't leaving! She and Holden are Hot!

Good news for Days. Nice that Crystal is getting 'credit' this week. Ratings fluctuate, lets hope she does not get the 'blame' if they do down!

I'm returning to DAYS again for Crystal. I watched and have been following her work since she started on DAYS in 1990. Glad the ratings went up. Any downhill spiral will be because of the slow writing style. Even after two weeks the Carly story has been a little bit of snooze fest. Loving the few scenes we've had of her, particularly the ones pitting CC and MS against each other.

I guess they're holding back on flashbacks til Vivian returns. I wanna see Carly in the coffin again!!

Well it's obvious what the power of Crystal Chappell and the die-hard Otalia fans can do.

And who is watching AMC? While GH has its problems, it is so much better than AMC and they both have the same rating! I don't get it!

So let's see viewers are coming because of CC + LH, all they need is to bring John and Marlena back and DAYS can overtake #2/#1!

LOL in all seriousness Y&R better keep a look out, because Victor Newman is leaving and DAYS is bringing it's A game so I wouldn't be shocked if we do see DAYS overtake Y&R next year!

Great news for Days, looks like some former GL fans followed CC to the show. Whoever is watching AMC should have their heads examine. Maybe to see Zendall get back together? I can understand other than that not so much. I got a chance to watch OLTL this week and I see why the ratings continue to dip. Sorry, Jamey, but the storylines have not been very good. As for GH well could it be too much Olivia, perhaps.

Days needs a new head writer to replace Dena Hackley. Where is Sheri Anderson when you need her?

"I tuned in, but they lost me after Carly's first three episodes. I want to see her interact with Bo and people from the past, not Rafe. Plus, there have not been enough classic Carly flashbacks to re-establish her on the show."

Who would the flashbacks be with? They showed her goodbye with Lawrence, and they showed her with Bo. I wish they'd show a few more, but they did cover the bases. Maybe they could show one with Victor.

As long as they don't wait too long, I think they're smart to not have her interact with Bo yet. Having her with Rafe means stories intersect and more recent fans have reason to care.

Carol,

They showed brief, 5-second flashbacks. There are PLENTY of longer Carly/Bo, Carly/Victor, Carly/Lawrence flashbacks that should've been used.

I hope we get long buried alive flashbacks with Vivian. As a lapsed long time fan, I hate new characters like Rafe, and they are wasting Carly on him.
