Not a Good Week for a Victor and Nikki-Less Y&R Ratings-Wise

Oh, One Life to Live, whatever are we gonna do about you? Daytime Confidential's favorite soap continues to slide in the Nielsens (Source: SON). OLTL lost 70,000 total viewers, yet managed to hold steady in the demos. OLTL was the lowest rated soap in total viewers and in households (tied with As The World Turns) for the week of Nov. 2-6. All My Children lost even more total viewers, shedding 146,000 people over the previous week. AMC dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households, yet held steady among women 18-49. General Hospital continued its upswing, adding 54,000 total viewers, however Sarah Brown's final week didn't result in a spike in the demos (Which is what the network really looks at, as opposed to total viewers). GH instead held steady in households and among women 18-49.

Days of Our Lives dropped 93,000 total viewers over the previous week. DAYS also went down one-tenth of a ratings point in households and among women 18-49.

The biggest loser of the week, ratings-wise, was CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless. A Victor and Nikki-less Y&R lost 168,000 total viewers, and dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households. Y&R held steady among women 18-49. The Bold and the Beautiful also shed a good bit of eyeballs. B&B saw 135,000 total viewers turn off the goings-on of the Logans and Forresters for the week. B&B went down one-tenth of a ratings point in households, yet surprisingly went up one-tenth of a ratings point in the coveted women 18-49 demo. Little soap that could, As The World Turns added 41,000 total viewers, no doubt riveted by the fallout of Brad Snyder's demise. ATWT went up one-tenth of a point in households for a 1.9 (tying OLTL for the week), and held steady among women 18-49.

Can someone please tell me if the network idiots count DVR, TVIO and web viewing more people are working can't watch them when their on. I know the advertisers rely on the neilson ratings and the younger crowd. But don't they realize were the younger crowd gets their money to buy their shit.

No they don't count DVR, TIVO, or web viewing.

Not surprised by the Y&R drop...they need Victor and Nikki Newman back ASAP! Thankfully we have Jack, AShley, Kay, Jill, Nina, Lauren, Nick,Neil, Phyliss, Patty/Emily, Sharon and Billy are keeping me tuned in but it's been hard to really watch the everybody else on Y&R. Between the stupid stuff of Amber/Daniel/Kevin/Jana/Ryder/Daisey I mean it's just hard to sit through it. Jeff/Gloria getting their money back. The Lily/Cane/Mac snorefest doesn't help either. I want my Newmans back on screen and I don't mean Adam/Victoria...I'm talking about Victor and Nicole Reed Newman

Yeah they count DVR/TIVO if you watch it within 24 hours of the broadcast.

How do they know that your watching the program? That sounds kind of creepy to me. Is it the recording service? My cable service DVR is 17.00 a month, 11.95 for the recording service. How much is TVIO?

I didn't really feel the difference without Victor and Nikki. I know they're the show's primary super couple but I haven't really found the two characters likable in a while. Crown

Y&R has been boriing for quite sometime. The only time I watch is when LANE, Jill and Katherine, Sharon and Neil are on, which is rare; the rest is a SleepAid Crapfest! Chloe has never been a draw, even with Billy (she's brings him down), and one would be hard pressed to find two bigger bores than Mac and Chance (which means TPTB will of course put one or both in the middle of LANE to promote them). And what's going on with the Patty Look-a-like? Another slap at the Jack character.

Let's face it--Writers can't write wrong! Y&R should understand that they are writing for the Viewers, and NOT Nelson Branco and themselves.

Not surprised about AMC....wow this isn't a great way to start November Sweeps for most soaps!

GH has been doing well so far, however this week I am finding the show to be boring a little bit. It could go down. I am very interested to see how the ratings are the week of November 23, when James Franco arrives.

I am not getting upset at Days yet, as this week has been great! Sami just found out about Sydney, and next week should be even more exciting. I hope Days passes B&B by months end! I know it can do it! Go Days!

AMC...just nothing exciting going on in November sweeps. You have Aiden all of a sudden realizing he's in love with Kendall, no! This whole David\Amanda baby stuff is so out there and wrong, not entertaining at all. But what I am liking is everything and anything having to do with Annie! She is the only interesting part on this show right now! Love Annie! I still pray for AMC...=\. Next year...maybe something will change, please!

I'm surprised AMC dropped but am shocked it didn't drop to last place. The Adam/Annie/Scott triangle they have playing 24/7 plus Adam killing his brother is killing the show for me.

Well they probably don't count those of us who still tape shows on a VCR and I know for a fact they don't count those of us who watch on SoapNet at night.

I think the entire system is outdated and dumb. Just because I'm a year or two older now I no longer count since I left that silly 18-49 range. I guess my money isn't any good any more. I think everyone older than 49 should stop buying anything advertised on a soap until they realize that people over 49 still have money to spend and that they spend it!

I don't know too many 18 year olds sitting home watching soaps. Most of them are in school during the day. I think there are more people over 49 watching soaps then there are people under 21. Like I said, the system is outdated and dumb in my opinion!

Something definitely has got to change with these ratings systems, and soon...I just know that if VCR\DVR\SOAPnet\Online viewing statistics were added, things would be A WHOLE lot different. For all we know, A different soap could be at the top of the ratings!...I don't fully rely on these Nielsen Research ones at all.

I tape AMC, GH, and Days on my VCR and it just kills me to know that my viewing is probably not even being counted, what a joke! With technology today, something more efficient should be integrated into the ratings system!

AMC & Y&R
Why do they continue to make these old azz men like Adam and Victor have baby s/l I don't get that at All not even in SoapLand. Some things even in soaps need to have a level of realism to the story & make it a somewhat believable.

Is it just me have soaps become really depressing on every soap there always someone dying or getting sick. Soaps were meant to get away while have fanatics.

I'm glad to see GH on the upswing even though I am not watching at all. From what I read, the stuff following Claudia's death was all well done (if too violent/endlessly depressing for my tastes).

I read where Jacob Young flat-out asked viewers to watch as much as possible on ABC, because the suits evidently don't even take the numbers from SoapNet into account.

If that is indeed true...well, that's just crazy!

When a girl is wrong, she admits she's wrong.

I didn't care much that EB and the Honcho's weren't playing nice, and thought a little Victroller Vacay would do a body good..... Now I've re-thought my claims and must say...I miss the pain in the @$$!!....I only watched about 2 episodes thus far this week. Sure, I'll probably catch up on my now boyfriend-free Saturday Night, but from what I've seen, I'm not missin' much. But, every good show has it's Peaks and Valleys (I'm the biggest "OFFICE" fan alive and conceede the past few weeks haven't been up to par) Our friends in G.C. will turn it around......soooon, I hope!!

That's all I got. I don't want to comment on the ABC show's too much as I don't want to offend their loyal viewers. (I'm referring to GH and ESP AMC!!!)

OLTL hmm..it's so sad that the ratings are so low on this show. Remind me of the good ole Santa Barbara days (another ratings mystery to me). I almost think that OLTL is too smart for its own good. Right now they are serving Filet Mignon to an audience that just want some brats...lol. I say, just give the audience what they want, right now OLTL can't afford otherwise. Reunite John&Nat...move forward with Schulyer& Gigi....expose Stacy, etc.
I don't even recognize Dorian anymore and Robin looks like she doesn't even enjoy playing this storyline. The mayor's race is a total bust and I am not enjoying it at all. If I hear Matthew/Bo/Nora talk about this dayum surgery one more time I am going to scream.
Finally, I think T-n-T fans are tired of getting screwed (me being one of them) and a lot turned off the TV. This whole storyline (good on paper, terrible on the screen) remind me of the Morasco Fiasco part two! Urghhh

I don't think you can blame the ratings drop of Y&R on Nikki and Victor not being around. It was just 165k in viewers, and it's still 160k more viewers than they had this time last year.

I like last week's Y&R. I liked the Chance/Chloe/Billy stuff (can't say the same for Mac, sorry) and I'm intrigued by the Ryder/Kevin storyline.

I don't ever watch for Victor or Nikki's storylines. I certainly think they add a certain history to the show, but they are not a draw for me, personally.

My only request is that Frons stops pimping GH and AMC a little and start pimping OLTL more as far as promos. I also believe that DVR, TiVo and website airings should be counted in the ratings also. And also that SoapNet's ratings should be added in too. Isn't OLTL SoapNet's biggest primetime show?

I also agree that RC has probably been too smart for his own good. OLTL is probably the best show and actually tells relevent stories including Kish and a rumored upcoming hate crime s/l. The media and enlightened fans are loving the show (for the most part) but the masses are tuning out. Characters like John and Todd really grate on my nerves but it's apparent soap fans want John/Natalie and TnT. I loved the last week's wedding scenes when Fish came out publicly but apparently the mainstream audience tuned out. I read on one board soap fans thought those scenes came across as too preachy.

I just have to ask GH fans one thing, but not to start anything, but just out of curiosity. Well, TWO things actually. I stopped watching GH cuz it was just all gloom and misery (sans Robin and Patrick and even THAT was starting to become all agnst. I stopped watching after Emma's birth)

1) Is the writing better these days at all?

and

2) Does it annoy you that the honcho's seem to be relying on Bigger Names (JJ and Franco) to draw you in, rather than better storylines??

Again, I'm just assuming things are still pretty Crappy in Port Chuck....

These numbers are so depressing.

If you're not a Nielsen Household then your viewing doesn't count. They do include DVR/Tivo numbers (viewing it within 24 hours - as Jamey pointed out), but not from everyone, just Nielsen families. And I don't even think it's all Nielsen households, just a portion of them (though I'm not 100% sure of that.) It's hard to get exact numbers, but what someone has stated on DC.com is that Nielsen gets it's numbers from 9,000 households/18,000 participants. It's ridiculous. That's not an accurate representation of anything!

uofmichgrad99: I agree with you on a lot of things, but I have to disagree with your statement that OLTL is too smart for it's own good. I stopped watching not because it was too smart, but because the dumb outweighed the smart. I would love Filet Mignon (which is what Santa Barbara was!) but I just wasn't getting it with OLTL anymore.

Snizzle, I agree wholeheartedly with your comments...especially, " The media and enlightened fans are loving the show (for the most part) but the masses are tuning out." Unfortunately, I think Kish is the causing the ratings to slide. I love the storyline (everything except for the wedding), one of the best across all soaps this year, so please don't shoot me. But I classify myself as an "enlightened" fan.
Funny (or not so funny) story to tell...I was on vacation the week of the Kish wedding. I decided to visit my god daughter, it's been a while! Her godmother and I are big OLTL fans, so strategically thinking I decided to visit at 2 pm Smile. When I got there, the TV was on some court show so I went to put in on OLTL and she lunged at me to take the remote out my hand. Long story short...she didn't want OLTL (Kish) on while my god daughter was in the room..needless to say that visit only lasted 25 minutes.
Also, I volunteer at a senior citizen home when I find time and since I was on a "stay-cation" I decided to visit my golden girls. Again...2 PM. Again No One Life to Live on. Again, because of Kish..or better yet, "I just can't believe they den made Dorian gay..now that is just taking it too far".
Now I know these are just two cases....but I'm just saying...

I have to side with Daisy on the OLTL too smart for its own good. I have watched OLTL and the ABC lineup for more years than I care to count, and heres my thinking, GH and AMC every once in awhile go through really bad spells for months at a time when there isnt much I like, but usually its pretty consistently good. (ALthought AMC has been in a down slope for more than a year now, so this is more historical) with OLTL it seems like the individual epis are spotty, so it never gets compelling for me. Yes, I am loving Kish, Chris and Layla, Brody and Jess, and the return of Mitch, but I hate hate hate the Mayor story, Dorian pretending to be gay, all things Morasco, David coming and going which leaves Dorian in limbo while he is gone, the rapist triangle, and the boring pairings of Marty and John,Nora and bo, and Greg and Rachel. And if we are going to talk "smart", a boy in a wheelchair, even with help avoids security, a town in PA where the most coveted, vote rich demographic is the GLBT crowd, so much so you can win an election by pretending to be gay, and of course the blood bag that gets passed around and hidden in a ketchup bottle, but is still viable.

This topic is brought up all the time: why aren't more people watching OLTL? The question really should be: Why should OLTL watch? What is OLTL offering that compels viewers to watch? As someone who stopped watching when I got fed up with the badly written "gay" storyline, I'll tell you what the show can do to get me back:
1.)Kill off Todd. Make it a huge murder mystery involving many characters.
2.)Stop the woman hating and all the violence towards women. Also, stop condoning sociopathic behaviour. (I know this happens on other shows, but I don't care as OLTL is the only one I want to return to)
3.)Stop the retread storylines--Mitch, Tea/Todd/Blair, etc.
4.)Stop forcing couples and go on chemistry.
5.)Stop rushing through storylines. The "Gay" storyline was so rushed that it sacrificed character and emotion.
6.)Get rid of Stacy and do something about Gigi and Rex because I saw a few recent scenes, and I was aghast at the poor quality of acting. Never allow Fath to play drunk.
7.)Give the teenagers teenage problems not adult storylines.
8.)Take the stick out of John's ass.
9.)Give Erika Slezak a major storyline--one that does not trivialise a very important issue.
10.)Bring back Tonja Walker, KAthy Brier, and Michael Stack.
11.)More Ilene Kristen.
12.)Give Cristian a storyline. The gay storyline did one thing: made me like Christian again.
13.)Win me back by slowing down the gay storyline. Repair the damage done to the character of Nick. Have KYle question how he can get past the way Oliver treated him. Give Evans a contract because I don't trust that you have faith in this storyline when he's the only actor in a major "love" story without a contract.
14. Give Bree Williamson a storyline where she doesn't have to cry, scream or act scared. Jessica and Brody are a couple I can support so do something with that.
15.)Have more scenes with David and Matthew.
16.)Do something to make me interested in Natalie or get rid of her.

That's off the top of my head.

More Niz and LnL2. I really hope the writers see from the ratings what we want!

Okay I watch OLTL but it is not must see tv for me. Todd has me just so upset. I hate watching his smug face. Blair is acting like a looney. Tea is keeping her daughter and Ross apart. Rachel is stuck with horrific Greg. That whole gay marriage storyline bombed. That chick Dorian married is super annoying and boring.

But at least the kids are good. I like Dani, Matthew and right now even bad acting Destiny. But that's because she was around David Vickers.

Oh, Bigdede! Don't you know the reason Tea has to keep her daughter away from Ross? Apparently, he's crazy and unpredictable! As shown by him nearly coming thisclose to raping Blair. Good thing good old Todd was there to stop him.

And how ridiculous was it that after Todd asked Ross what his problem was and asked him if he had calmed down LEFT Ross and Blair ALONE in the bedroom and THEN Ross and Blair have a conversation about why she didn't want him to tell Todd about Daniella.
