Procter and Gamble CONFIRMS As The World Turns Cancellation

As The World Turns executive producer Chris Goutman and Brian T. Cahill, senior vice-president and managing director for Telenext Media, Inc. have confirmed the 56-year-old sudser's cancellation by CBS.  Cahill also states Telnext is seeking a new home for the serial. See full press release below:

NEW YORK, NY, Dec. 8, 2009 – As The World Turns, the long-running daytime drama, will complete its final season on the CBS Television Network in September 2010. CBS has decided not to renew the show for the 2010/2011 broadcast season, thereby ending its 54-year run on the Network.

“Throughout our history, As The World Turns has remained dedicated to sharing compelling stories that have entertained fans for more than five decades,” said Executive Producer Chris Goutman. “We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed. It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience.”

“As The World Turns has been a cornerstone of our business and a tremendous asset to the company,” said Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, TeleNext Media, Inc. “We are proactively seeking a new outlet to carry the show, and are open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of ATWT.”

The epitome of multi-generational, serial storytelling, As The World Turns has been entertaining generations of fans for more than half a century. The show boasts a well-loved and long-tenured cast, including actress Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes) who spoke the first words on the premier broadcast of ATWT in 1956. To this day, Nancy is still at the helm of the Hughes family, earning Wagner the distinction of portraying the longest-running character in television history. Other veteran cast members still on the show today include Eileen Fulton (Lisa Grimaldi) and Don Hastings (Dr. Bob Hughes) who each have played their characters for 49 years; Marie Masters (Dr. Susan Stewart) with 41 years; and Kathryn Hays (Kim Hughes) who has starred on the show for 37 years.

As The World Turns has tackled many contemporary themes over the years, including AIDS, Alzheimer’s, alcoholism and more, while remaining true to the show’s rich history and realistic characters. In 1988, the serial made history by introducing daytime television's first gay male character, Hank Eliot (played by Brian Starcher), for which it was honored at the first annual GLAAD media awards in 1990. Created by Irna Phillips, As The World Turns premiered on April 2, 1956 as a 30-minute live television show, unprecedented at the time for a soap opera. Top-rated from 1959 to 1971, it was the first daytime serial with its own spin-off, Our Private World, which aired in prime-time. The show switched to color on 1967, and expanded from a half-hour in length to one hour in 1975. Over the years, ATWT has been awarded numerous accolades, including 58 Daytime Emmy awards. Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Oakdale, As The World Turns launched the careers of many now-famous Hollywood celebrities, such as Dana Delaney, James Earl Jones, Julianne Moore, Parker Posey, Meg Ryan, and Marisa Tomei to name a few.

As a long time soap fan since the early 60's.(Remember when they were 15 minutes long?)I think we are seeing the end of daytime TV as we know it and soaps are going by way of the dinosaurs. With the few viewers each soap has versus the cost of salaries for actors and production staff for a 5 day a week show is just not profitable for networks anymore to make them.

What the fuck, they just hired that idiot Ellen Wheeler she hasn't had the chance to really ruin it. I have had it with CBS, I will no longer watch CBS Daytime. That's a bunch of bullshit if you think Cahill is looking for another network. We've herd this shit before P&G wants out of soaps, they are about to go bankrupt. They have been slowly destroying there soaps one by one and now the circle is complete, boycott P&G products that's what they are afarid of when they canceled GL.

What the fuck keeps B&B on the air, I can't stand that soap I'm I the only one. They were once want to make that on hour. God I hope not. Sorry B&B fans if their are any.

From the Grinch who stole Christmas song
How Mr. Les Moonves stole ATWT fans hearts

You're a mean one, Mr. Les.
You really are a heel.
You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel.
Mr. Les
You're a bad banana
With a greasy black peel.
You're a monster, Mr. Les.
Your heart's an empty hole.
Your brain is full of spiders,
You've got garlic in your soul.
Mr. Les.
I wouldn't touch you, with a
thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.
You're a vile one, Mr. Grinch.
You have termites in your smile.
You have all the tender sweetness
Of a seasick crocodile.
Mr. Les.
Given the choice between the two of you
I'd take the seasick crocodile.
You're a foul one, Mr. Les.
You're a nasty, wasty skunk.
Your heart is full of unwashed socks
Your soul is full of gunk.
Mr. Les.
The three words that best describe you,
are, and I quote: "Stink. Stank. Stunk."
You're a rotter, Mr. Grinch.
You're the king of sinful sots.
Your heart's a dead tomato splot
With moldy purple spots,
Mr. Les.
Your soul is an apalling dump heap
overflowing with the most disgraceful assortment
of deplorable rubbish imaginable,
Mangled up in tangled up knots.
You nauseate me, Mr. Les.
With a nauseaus super-naus.
You're a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked horse.
Mr. Les.
You're a three decker saurkraut and toadstool sandwich
With arsenic sauce.

I am numb, I am in shock, i am beyond pissed off and i don't like that they are already starting to lie to the fans saying "Oh we are looking for a new home" WELL dang it if you were looking for a new home you should have focused on finding one for Guiding LIGHT! but guess what you couldn't do that so I have absolutely no faith that you will find one for ATWT.

Ugh.

Okay onto a better note, ATWT has told some really impactful storylines over the years, and it will be missed.

Best wishes to the cast, and crew.

I have to wonder if P&G didnt know about this ahead of time. They had the chance to bring over fan faves from GL but didnt take it, its like they wanted to write for only ATWT characters, like they knew they wouldnt get much time with them.

Hey Goutman--seems like you only cared about the soap's loyal audience for the past 3 months or so. If you started to give a crap a couple of years ago--this might not be happening. But, then you said you didn't care what fans thought--you were determined to push the Paul/Meg pairing and destroy all characters that got in their way. Well, now your recent efforts are too little too late.

Come on now folks. We can't blame Ellen. I did joke about it but she was just directing. Babs and TROUT MOUTH GOUTMAN need to be taken to task.

I agree with Jillian!  This has been brewing for a long time and as heartbreaking as it it was only a matter fo time.  Just because Ellen is the face that everyone recognizes you don't have to pin it on her.   Goutman has done a pretty good job of destroying the show all by himself!  Who would've thought? Both Kim Zimmer and Maura West out of work!  Travesty.

Wow other than mention of the wonderful vet cast this statement is almost the exact same as the one for GL.

Now Brian says he is open to new methods of producing the soap.

Ok let me say this Now is the time for Telenext to come out with ATWT and GL as half hour web soaps will it happen prolly not but this is the time. Well September 2009 was the time.

Damn this seems just like when NBC canned AW then six months later they can SB well CBS.....

Yup, i totally agree with everything you said Myworld.

They really need to do both shows as 1/2 hours shows and put them online.

And it is like AW/Sb....only no Passions to come in Sad

damn just when the guiding light wound starts healing this happens. fuck proctor & gamble. they just want out. as the world turns was just getting good again. this freaking sucks. i can't even joke about ellen wheeler being soap taboo. at least this explains why they finally decided to put jack & carly back together. i bet they keep simon on longer to so katie can have closure at the end of the show. they better end this right. bring back some favorites.

I am sad to hear this..I've been watching since 85..it seems impossible that there will only be a few soaps left to watch Y&R GH..maybe B&B if it stops being about brooke/ridge, then ridge/taylor then back again..that gets boring..
I do think that jack/carly will get back together as will Lily/Holden..they have less than a year..wow!! I feel bad I hope the actors won'tv be out of work too long..
It is encouraging to read about web soap operas..why couldn't atwt do that as well?
I plan on watching the new web only soap with Martha Bryne and there's that one with Vanessa Marcil..I guess that's the future of soaps a few still left on TV and the rest on the web..
Good luck to all the atwt actors..

I am stunned! I just was not expecting this today, and to read all this when I get online. It hurts my heart, especially after I just loss Guiding Light. ATWT was the only soap left that I really watched, and it was starting to get good again. Soaps are dying so quickly now. Sad

Well Merry Christmas ATWT. This is so f'ing sickening. They have known all along that they were going to cancel it, they knew it the day GL ws cancelled. CBS, P&G & Telenext could give a SHIT less about the soap industry or its fans. This pisses me off. You don't set good things in the works and then go cancel it. Ever heard of trying to SAVE a show? Huh? Put some offort into it. P&G used to produce such amazing soaps in great numbers, and this now ends it's ties to the soap industry. Thanks for vacating the one thing that made your business what it is today.

Thanks so much for ruining the one good daytime television show of mine. Daytime television no longer relates to me. This was my last soap left standing. And now it's gone. After September 2010, Saytime television will no longer have any relation whatsoever to this longtime soap fan. : (

Sorry to the fans of ATWT. I watched this soap back in the 80's along with GL. It's a damn shame that it has to come to this. I know this is a strange notion, but it makes me want to start taping a bunch of soaps along with my GH just to nudge up the ratings for as many as I can.
