Chris Goutman: "Our Show is Not Ready to Go"

Michael Logan from TV Guide Magazine interviewed As The World Turns executive producer Chris Goutman. They talked about the cancellation, finding a new home for the show and what's going to happen in Oakdale the coming months.
Was this out of the blue for you?
It’s a shame and it’s a shock because we absolutely thought we had a shot at another year. Our show is not ready to go because, creatively, we’re on a roll. We still have exciting stories in the works and we’re sticking to them. We’re not ready to start inviting back old favorites and do the nostalgia thing.
So how do you proceed from here? TeleNext has announced that it will try to place the show elsewhere, but that may not be your ultimate reality.
We just continue to tell good stories and we’ll see how the efforts go in terms of shopping the show around. There will be plenty of time to bring in whomever we want from the past. I think we’re in a very, very good place and we’re excited by everything that’s going on, but the numbers in November just didn’t budge. Listen, all the soaps are facing competition from game shows and talk shows that have different business models. We’re a labor-intensive enterprise and we cost more money—that’s basically it. The bottom line is the profit margin and that’s what we’re all fighting. But I do believe there is still an audience for this show.

He cheated us outt of this creative reseeurgence with that 3 Day a wk crap. He is trying to ease his consious ala Ellen Wheeler with him crying everywhere. No sympathy for the Gout. Do feel for fans and cast/crew!

I didn't not like this interview at all. Goutman keep talking about storylines for the kids on the show. This show has been cancelled and it is unlikely it will be picked by another outlet. We should be seeing stories about the veterans. I don't care about a SORASed Faith I want to see Martha Byrne back as Lily.

I am just as heartbroken as the next fan about this but Chris it's time to start plotting how the show is going to wrap.
Love the "we're on a roll" line. That maybe true but the show wasn't for quite a long time and all we all know it. Too many misses instead of hits storywise.
Jean Passanante should NEVER have been left as the head-writer when Hogan Sheffer split. Never.

Ugh!! This interview makes me VERY nervous!!! There is NOT plenty of time left if you're going to wrap up story lines, bring back vets, and give already existing vets story lines they haven't had in years! Chris Goutman has always been hard headed when it comes to giving the fans what they want to see and this is not a time to stick to your guns on that. The reality is like GL, ATWT does not stand a very good chance of being picked up by another network so now is the time to start giving the fans what they want... a story line for Lisa, Lucinda, Bob, Kim and bring back Martha Byrne or risk complete alienation from any fan base you have left. World Turns has been stellar as of late and I only hope this continues but don't wait until July to start closure....please don't rush it like Guiding Light, learn from the tragedy of Guiding Light!

Once again, Chris Goutman is only thinking about...Chris Goutman. And to think that I actually was starting to believe that he had seen the light and was in tune with his show's fans. *BUZZER NOISE* Wrong again!
As hopeful as some out there may be, the truth is...they should be preparing to say goodbye. If it ends up they get picked up somewhere else, THEN you re-write and change storylines. But right now, fans want to see vets and some closure on a lot of couples/storylines as it is.
As stunned and upset as I'm sure Chris is (whether it's to his own blind ego or not) he needs to pull his head out of...the sand...and take a good look at how he wants to go down in soap history: as the Executive Producer who pissed off 2.5 million+ fans by ignoring what they needed to happen or as the Executive Producer who understood that his show could go out with class and style, like it should!

They just got to keep the show going, if they can keep it going on another network fine I will follow were ever it goes. I'm sure that other soaps want to see it continue so they can. They'll start hacking away at other soaps soon which they have at Y&R and AMC no one is safe.

Was the road trip their idea of pulling out all the stops because if it was that is just sad.
ATWT has plenty of time to prepare for the finale, the question is, will they use that time wisely or will the do like GL did and tell ridiculous storylines and put the most boring couples on the frontburner unitl the last week when they started writng for the finale.
GL is dead and so is ATWT, no one will pick them up.

Good for Goutman! If he's pissed enough, maybe he'll fight for the show!
Goutman had a great run from 1999 to 2005.
He needs to fight with P&G to put out the best soap on CBS and try to find a new home for it.
200 people and their families work for ATWT. I doubt that they want to lose those jobs.
If you are really fans of the show, help to fight for it. Do what you can to drive up ratings to make it easier to find a new home for it.
GL's ending was a kludge because of Ellen Wheeler.

This show has been cancelled and I really don't think that another network will pick it up, he better start writing a decent ending for all the characters
