DC #497: Daytime Confidential Celebrates 500th Episode With Ron Carlivati

In honor of the Daytime Confidential podcast's 500th episode (okay, this is actually 497 but who's counting?), Luke and Jamey chat with One Live to Live head writer extraordinaire, Ron Carlivati. In his first podcast interview, the George Washington University graduate, who left a career in law to pursue his dreams of writing for his favorite soap opera, shares with Luke and Jamey how his then-employer, former attorney David Baldacci selling his first novel, Absolute Power, inspired Carlivati to move to New York and follow his true passion.

Carlivati talks in depth about what it was like to go from being Dorian (Robin Strasser) and Viki's (Erika Slezak) biggest fan, to creating their storylines day in and day out. He shares what it meant to him to see the first confrontation he ever penned for the legendary duo air on television.

Carlivati also reveals why it was so important for him to restore Llanview's rich history and how he managed to return the soap opera to the diverse landscape creator Agnes Nixon first envisioned over four decades ago.

The talented scribe also explains in great deal why he felt the payoff of having Todd Manning (Trevor St. John) romance his amnesiac, one-time rape victim Marty Saybrooke (Susan Haskell) made the controversial story worth it in the end. He also shared how it made him feel to see Haskell win her second Emmy earlier this year for the storyline's climax, and explains why he feels two smart, flawed women like Tea Delgado (Florencia Lozano) and Blair Cramer (Kassie DePaiva) are drawn to Todd.

Carlivati also talks about his love for great sitcoms growing up and how that influences his storytelling. He then provides Daytime Confidential listeners with a sneak peek of what's next for his soap's top couples like Bo and Nora, Rex and Gigi and of course Kish. Will daytime's most realistically-drawn gay couple get a real love scene? You'll have to listen to this episode to find out. It's an interview you don't wanna miss!

Congrats guys on landing Ron and getting to 500!

Great interview with Ron, though would it have killed him to use a landline? Anyway, I found myself agreeing with just about everything he said. I loved his enthusiasm and noticeable love and care for the show. By the way, I knew from the beginning that the rapemance was going to be worth the effort to watch for a powerhouse conclusion, and it in the end, it was another example of Ron for challenging his audiences to see things from a different point of view. Hope he keeps it up.

It is no wonder that the shows are being cancelled left and right. I prefer to see the bad but be grateful for the good and OLTL is good! As I have mentioned elsewhere, none of the soaps should be gone on ABC, but AMC taking precidence over OLTL is just insane.

The Rapemance.... man, is that thing long over, yet it is the heat of the topic, any topic when OLTL or Todd Manning is mentioned. Like Jamey said, this kind of storytelling is done on all the soaps. Perhaps we weren't so picky then, but it has  been epic since the seventies and a known phenomina that victims fall in love with their captors. Being a Todd lover, I suffer the same old trap each time when discussing the show,  this is sooooo old, that I am surprised that anyone still finds anything to say over it. Then again, no one says anything new, always the same monotonous dislike of anything that will finally redeem him even when it is short lived. Todd has paid for his crimes more than enough, he has been the whipping boy for over a decade and truly friends, it is tiresome.

It was a nice closing, I loved the clips of Marty rehashing her raping while Todd was tied to the bed. I loved that they managed to put that behind them and to be mature adults in light of their Grandchild and I liked the fact that even though she will never forget it, MARTY doesn't let it rule her every thought or action any longer... because Todd served as the trigger to her FINally putting her past behind her so that she can move on. AND for Pete's sake, I would throw a huge shin-dig when half of the fans would move on also.

Todd isn't proud of what he has done, but for a tolerant generation of educated people, we sure do love to hang someone time and time again for very BAD mistakes they do. How easy it is to shoot down this very brilliant storytelling on hand of a few minor storylines that only made the Characters more viable. Todd at least, has grown. Spare me with Jess the Mess....

Tea and Blair fighting over Todd has NOTHING to do with his past crimes, but when I see the same people who chastise Ron for closing the story, cheering on that low-life Cop, John McBain for covering up an attempted murder, I do have to think that the world has gone mad.

It is so, that we may just loose this show in a year when we are lucky to have it so long... just as is with all the others that was taken away from us, all we can think about then, is how much we miss it.

I thank you all for voicing your opinions, just shows me how much more work we fans have before us if we do wish to save this and eventually GH and AMC also. It is just annoying to have had the pleasure of having the HW telling us how HE saw things and why he made his choices, without having a whole page of dispute to read down before he endlessly finding a comment or two from people who actually appreciate his efforts and love his work.

My Opinion... as yours does count, it is just a bit hard to read out in a pool of discontent and negativity. No one owes us anything... I suppose we tend to forget that.

Again, Thank you so much Luke and Jamey for the wonderful 500th edition and the pleasure of hearing Ron C speak openly with us about the show many fans out here in the world do NOT want to live without.

Merry Xmas!

Outspoken, I could not disagree with you more on almost everything you've written. But I don't feel like arguing. "Tarty" will continue to be talked about for a long time. It was a controversial story and is now part of OLTL history, for better or worse. That's why Jamey and Luke asked Ron C. about it in the interview and that's why it's being discussed here.

LIkewise, it's normal for people to make both negative and positive comments about the show. I hesitated on commenting about the interview, specifically because OLTL is in trouble. It sort of feels like kicking a dog when it's down, but at the same time we as fans are pretty much powerless, the only voice we have is on these sites and by writing to TPTB. There's a chance that Carlivati or one of his people will look at these comments, so fans should speak up about what they like and dislike. Pretending everything is perfect won't do any good.

But just so all of my comments weren't negative, what I liked about OLTL: ripple effect storytelling, use of vets, the humor. I'm really missing the cast most of all. Charlie was my favorite new character to come along in the last couple of years (from any show.) I ADORE Brian Kerwin and hope he's not leaving the show anytime soon...

Outspoken, I couldn't disagree with you more, daisyclover is absolutely right, negative or positive, fans should voice their opinions about the show, and maybe the writers will read some of it and start making the changes needed to help save the show. I hate that OLTL is in trouble and would hate to see the show cancelled.

OLTL is by far the most diverse show on daytime and could be the best show if the characters were written properly and they were'nt so kill happy. Nash's character for instance was a great addition to the Buckes household and he and Jessica could've invested in the winery together turning it into a family business instead of having him getting the money from a shady business man. There was a scene where Jared and Nash was actually working together on the winery 50/50 and that was working out great. IMO Nash/Jessica/Natalie/Jared would have been an awesome foursome on the show, but the writers ruined that story. Jared and Natalie could've come out sooner and just told the truth about who the real brother was and move on from there.

GH is full of violence and I tuned out from watching GH when Michael killed Claudia and everyone covered for him. The writers turned Elizabeth character scandalous, by hooking her up with Nick-o-dic, while she is engaged to Lucky, and lets not talk about Jason and Jake, Jason doesn't even acknowledge that he has a son and is back with the woman who watch his kid get kidnapped and did nothing. There is no diversity on GH at least AMC have the Hubbards.

I was very loyal to ABC soaps, I am now very disappointed, and fustrated to say the least and thinking about switching to NBC, and start watching DOOL, I just read that Dena Higley is writing for days, maybe she can bring Forbes March to DOOL I would definitely watch anything Forbes.

Moin Daisy! Lol, kicking the dog when it is down, you are right! But to shun a whole show for the sake of a couple of major Storylines is for me, a bit simplistic. Not that I feel that you are narrow minded, because your Posts prove you are not! I for one have my problems with rape issues that aren't being handled properly ((Brooke Logan..ugh)) but feel that in both versions, the 90's and the latest concerning Tarty, were done very, very well. Todd and Marty have always had this strange relationship, Marty knows who she is and who Todd is, she has moved on.

Yes, Todd has done some pretty awful things, but that is who he is. Still, we ToddyFans love him because even with his crazy antics, his complications and his really short temper, Todd is and remains a very interesting Character and TSJ is knocking him out of the park. I have loved Todd since day one, hated that he became the head of a mass-raping but was intrigued by his inner-fight and denial. He was not very likable I admit, but he was soooooooooo intense that I couldn't help but want to see how his story developed. Over the years, he has been through so much and when he was raped, injected with poison, witch-hunted and persecuted, I couldn't wait to see him stand up and be counted. His sister has shunned him, his daughter and his exes... yet, Todd remains to be a force to be reckoned with. For me, a perfect soap villiain.Every Soap has at least one, now thanks to Ron, we have two. Todd and Mitch on the screen at the same time is outrageously exciting. I love the canvas that is presently Llanview and that after a very bumpy four years of bad writing and Character assassination before RC joined the Crew and brought back our show.

I love Ron and I love what he is doing with this show. I am so thrilled about the upcoming returns and really, the way the show is written; can only be thankful to see them once again in full capacity when even for the last round.

I have watched all the soaps at one time or the other, but have never stopped watching OLTL and BnB. GH is the kind of show that when you haven't watched in 18 years, you can still come back and slip right into the present. I started watching again when reading here on DC that SJB was going to BnB and I must say, even though there were characters that I didn't know, I was drawn in and now have added that to my list of must keep up with soaps!   I checked into Days after 22 years, I am so happy for its fans that the show is fighting like hell. Being a soap-addict, I realised, that it really doesn't matter which soap it is, I can get comfy-cosy with it.  AMC? I have put in so many pauses that if you were to see it like a slice of cheese, you would say it was swiss! I can take it or leave it, it really doesn't affect me that much... but it does affect my fellow soap-fans; for whom I root in general.

Critic? Ron needs to build up on the Evans family and perhaps bring Evangeline back. I am really tired of the inferences to her Character and knowing that she will remain in this coma. I would really like to see her Wake-up! There are some characters who are getting too much airtime, while others are getting none and yes, I do love that Clint is going to be pulling out the dark-side soon. I am disappointed that Bo is now part of the cheating team, that Nat may be re-paired up with John McSnooze, that Rex is now the biggest jerk that side of the Llantano and that Blair still doesn't know who her Daddy is... but I have time! All the time TPTB allows us.

Ron is doing a fantastic job on his end, if we would do a little bit more on ours... not just ripping things down, but supporting the foundation of the crumbling Genre.. perhaps we will have our shows in ten years to discuss rather than to loose the shows all together because it was more important to make the fly bigger than the wall. For me he is the best writer on Daytime and remains within the realms of the living mortal -- where he too, makes creative mistakes which being HW; he can smoothe out. He seems to know what he is doing, so has my support. I am not going to stop fighting for him and our Show... worldwide spreading the word, getting the snail mail out  and sending Peanuts to studios in support of Soap Fans who are being forced to watch the various Casts and Crews who face the loss of their existence!!! Having witnessed the loss of so many wonderful shows, that were replaced with nonsense that didn't even last a complete year, I do get upset with the many posts, comments, blogs that feed more into reasons to can rather than save them. I don't stand alone and that is good so.

Loved reading your comments, have a wonderful Holiday Season and a happy 2010, may all our Soap Dreams come true!

Hi JoJo! Thanks for the reply, but as I remember... it was DOOL who started with the Kill-Happy Climate on the Soaps. I still can't understand why they threw away such epic Performers and now that they have DH, how long do you really believe the show will exist? She is just as venomous to soaps as is Ellen Wheeler. So, if they did bring him over there, you can start counting the months before DOOL has its curtain call. I hope not... such is the life of a Soap-Killer!

I would have been happy if Nash and Jess would have left for Napa and never returned, thus saving the character of Nash and not making him out to be the lame brained person he became. He was perfect with Tess and only Tess. The reintegration of the alter egos has left  no residue of Tess or Bess in the present Jess, making that whole thing, while highly entertaining - null and void. If Mess would show her Tess side more, I could really support your thesis, but she is just the most pathetic, whiney and weak Character in the family right now and I am truly bored.  So... having said that; if Ron were to put a pinch of Tess in the Mess, I would be thrilled at having Nash's twin back. The whole Jared and Nat crap was a huge down for me, being that Nash didn't have to be pulled into that stuff in the first place. He put himself in there and Jared took him out. I feel Jared's death is a small retribution, thus closing the chapter for me.

I agree with your GH thoughts, however; GH hasn't been GH in over 20 years. Still, I do watch it again because I am interested in seeing who gets burned and who not. The Franco story does nothing for me, but like I have said in a previous post, I have only started watching around the time Claudia was getting ready to be Axed.

As for AMC and the Hubbards.................... they have ruined Jessie for me. He has turned into the biggest disappointment, has no semblance of the Jessie I knew 20-odd years ago and would never put his family / career on the line to support all the illegal crap the whole town has been doing, only to save Erica's daughter. Angie is the best cop in that town, Frankie needs to divorce his wife and Nat needs to stop treating Brot like she is.  I just don't know how they are going to redeem him again, it is a disgrace to have brought Angie and him back, just to crucify their memory in long-term Fan's minds.

I hope that you get to see March on Daytime again, I see how much he meant to you. DOOL has more than enough Characters right now, perhaps when they do actually make the mark and are not being threatened on a weekly basis, they may just give you your wish. Unfortuanately, I see more cutting down on Performers than adding new ones to on the shows. This is all very hard to take, but unless fans start protesting and making a major stink, we will loose not just one or two of our favorite characters, but also entire shows.

Happy Holidays!

Kudos, Jamey and Luke!  Ron C has definitely got me excited out Llanview going into the New Year.  His background as a lawyer certainly came in handy as he answered the 'tricker questions'.  That Brian Frons is certainly full of suprises these days.

Congratulations to DC for 500 podcasts, and fantastic interview!  I've really enjoyed what Mr. Carlivati has done on OLTL the last couple of years.  And mostly, I have to thank him for giving me a little bit of hope that any dream you have can come true.  It gives me fortitude to continue writing.  Thanks to all of you!

great interview and Ron has an interesting background and enjoyed hearing how he got his start on OLTL......I want to thank him for giving us my favourite couple Kish and i'm so happy that he has big plans for them.....this is one of the sweetest most romantic love stories ever seen on TV and the chemistry between Brett Claywell and Scott Evans is so amazing  that they make Kish so real and believable.....they are such an adorable couple and are the best reason to watch OLTL.....JMHO...
