One Life to Live Hits New Ratings Low

It wasn't such a Merry Christmas for our fav-or-ite sudser. One Life to Live dropped 132,000 total viewers, hitting a new all-time low. OLTL dropped one-tenth of a ratings point in households and among women 18-49, tying it's all-time low in those demographics as well (Source: SON). OLTL is dead last in every major demo, save for women18-34.
Thanks to the all-out promotional push OLTL's sister soap All My Children has been getting leading up to the soap's 40th anniversary and move to LA, AMC gained 47,000 total viewers over the previous week. AMC held stead in households—above As The World Turns, General Hospital and OLTL—and went up one-tenth of a point among women 18-49.
The other Mouse House sudser, General Hospital lost 130,000 total viewers over the previous week. GH is also down a whopping 585,000 total viewers year-to-date. ABC's longest running sudser dropped down one-tenth of a ratings point in households, and tied cancelled CBS sudser ATWT for fifth place in that demo. GH managed to hold steady among women 18-49 however, tied with Days of Our Lives at number two.
Speaking of Days of Our Lives, NBC's lone soap— and one of the broadcast channel's few success stories for 2009 whether Comcast will acknowledge it or not— dropped 93,000 total viewers the week of Christmas. DAYS also dipped one-tenth of a ratings point in households and two-tenths of a ratings point among women 18-49.
CBS daytime's The Young and the Restless gained 227,000 total viewers, making up for the previous week's freefall. Y&R held stead at 3.5 in households, yet dropped one-tenth of a ratings point among women 18-49. Sister sudser The Bold and the Beautiful gained 9,000 total viewers. B&B held steady in households, but dropped one-tenth of a point among women 18-49.
Last, but definitely not least, if you look at the numbers, As The World Turns managed to come in fifth place (beating GH and OLTL) among total viewers, even though the cancelled soap lost 70,000 total viewers over the prior week. As previously mentioned, ATWT actually tied GH in households, besting OLTL. ATWT was tied with OLTL in last place among women 18-49.

I'm just waiting on the announcement that OLTL is gone...I hate to say this but I think the writing is on the wall.
Sad news with these ratings. Just depressing!

Wow GH is in the crapper big time too!
Number 5 in the 12-17 viewers where they were number 1!
Well deserved, it is so boring, it hurts!
Shows that Guza will never be fired, he lost more than half their viewers, and he still has a job!

I'm really happy for ATWT. Even if the ratings surge doesn't save them at least they can go out almost on top.

Maybe the reason AMC's ratings are higher is because it is a better show, not just because of the promotional push. It isn't that no one knows what is on OLTL, it is that no one is interested in what they are selling. OLTL needs to make drastic changes or it won't be around much longer. I wish Frons would fire Ron, but it is clear that he is going to let Ron get this show cancelled.

I love that GH continues to fall. Show deserves it.
As for OLTL, the ratings lately have been depressing me. Show's good IMO, but ratings don't reflect it. Yeah, it gets sucky promotion, but some of the stories must not be connecting to the audience. If ratings continue to be bad, I might have to make like an ostrich and bury my head in the sand. LOL

I am onboard for anything that has those two in an affiliation with GH. This is starting to get redonkulous. I believe they could get back all of those lost viewers just by changing the damned opening, I mean just out of curiosity people would watch
.

I kind of agree with DKP, as much as it pains me I do a little happy dance inside knowing that Guza's master plan is stinking up the place. While I don't think GH deserves it I think ABC & TIIC deserve it.

I'm with you on that one Jamey! I can't sit through an hour of AMC with the bloody repetetive dialogue that has been going on for months involving Adam and Annie and Stuart's death.

Well soap viewers with DVRS disagree with you. It is obvious that you enjoy it, but the masses disagree with you. There is clearly something on AMC that is keeping these people tuned in and is getting people to run away from OLTL in droves. Personally, I feel OLTL deserves the ratings it is getting.

It's a damn conspiracy! Somebody must be hiding or destroying Nielson Data. Why is it that Ugly Step-Siblings such as (AMC) always go to the ball, while Cinderella (OLTL) are always stuck at home cleaning up?

G.H needs to get rid of Bob Guza ASAP!!! They also need to downgrade Steve Burton & Maurice Bernard to recurring. Make the show more about Dante(as a GOOD,Smart cop) the Quartermains, the Spencers, the Cassidines, the police & hospital stories and LESS MOB CRAP!!! Lets see Jason & Sonny get LIFE in prison (without parole) only to be seen on our screens once a month when Carly,Micheal,Morgan,Kristina & Dante go visit them.

I'm not surprised AMC has been going up, I actually think it's improved slightly. I hope it still goes up, this will give the new writer motivation and won't make her want to have to do something drastic to make ratings go up. Go AMC.
I cannot believe GH is still being written by Guza da luza. He has lost the show over half a million of it's viewers! When will TPTB at ABC fire this destructive joke of a scribe? UGH..

DAYS was the success story of 2009 but yet OLTL gets all the glory. All the critics love it. I can't sit through and hour of OLTL and I try, i really try. I record it on DVR and I fast forward every scene.
What does DAYS have to do to get a little respect, a little recognition? It's been playing up vets, telling good character-driven stories and adding twists to cliched storylines. The only bad thing was letting go of John & Marlena (but the ratings flew up when they did). I just don't understand why OLTL is pumped so damn much. It's mediocre at best.

AMC has been gaining viewers because it gets endless promotion, especially on The View, its lead in show in my area...and because people are slowly coming back due to Pratt being fired (me being one of them).
I have to believe this, because if the AMC of the last year was what fans consider to be good soap, then I need to retire from soap watching. I spent too much time watching AMC scratching my head....when all the dandruff was gone, I stopped watching the show.

Good to see ATWT go up in the ratings, hopefully they will end on a high note.
As for the ABC soaps,
Sorry Kitty, but Jamey is right as usual, AMC's ratings are not up because it's a better show, hardly, it's because of Zendall's departure and the build-up to the 40th anniversary shows, I am watching today's episode right now and all I can say is lame. No wonder Pratt got fired shortly after. Hopefully better days are ahead.
On OLTL,
I think some storylines are better than others. And you also have to wonder and I was thinking about this could it also be the Kish storyline that's turning some people off as well not just the usual people like Todd and Stacy. Hopefully better days are ahead there, too.
As for GH,
Well, I just say this they need a new HW and EP!!!!!!!!!
GH needs Tristan Rogers as EP and Sri Rao as HW PRONTO! I will take that Curacaoman, Tristan needs to come as Robert as well. Changes need to be made nowwwwww!!!!!

When it comes to OLTL all I can say is, Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. I don't care what happens to 95% of these characters. Bo & Nora were probably one of my favorite couples in the 90's. Now, I could care less that they're back together. I want to care but I can't. I don't see chemistry between Kyle and Fish. Wish Natalie had tripped and fell on that knife herself. HATE that everyone Todd hurt forgave him so quickly. Also, wish Trevor St. John would stop taking Ambien before a performance (Just because it worked for Tiger doesn't mean it's gonna work for you!).

So how's that Stunt Casting with GH working out with J. Franco? Glad to see the American Public isnt dumb enuff to fall for schtick.
Y&R. Up! YAAAY!
AMC - Not even going to comment on the ratings. BUT I don't think I've seen a PRO storyline comment ANYWHERE online. Here or otherwise. Since I don't watch, my only question is - IS THERE ONE??
I havent mentioned this before, but Christmas Eve - I actually caught ATWT for the first time EVER! (I had heard the C.E. Epi was must see) so, while wrapping, I decided to tune in. OMG! Coming from someone - AGAIN who has no vested interest in this show, I bawled with Brad and Katie. BAWLED! Shades of "Ghost" when Sam had to say g'bye to Molly. (okay so there was a bit of Swazye Nostalgia choking me up, but...)
Having said that, and being a Y/R faithful, and someone who's given up on ABC, I must end with "All my Children" sucks. In NYC, LA, France, the moon....Good luck, OLTL.....Your sister show deserves the toilet ratings. Not you.

The critics don't give DAYS the success it deserves because there isn't a gay storyline on DAYS. Sorry, no other way to put it. You are right, DAYS does deserve respect. It has proven that a soap can be saved. I hope someone buys a clue and does what needs to be done to save OLTL.

It really is a shame that OLTL doesn't get the credit in the ratings it deserves. This show doesn't rely on stunts, doom and gloom or blowing things up to tell the story. The stories are character based and require you to pay attention to the show. I can't say that about other soaps.
I stopped watching Days a couple of years ago right around the time DH took over writing. While home on my Christmas break I did watch a couple of days because I have been hearing people say how much better it is. I will say that it has improved over other times since stopping, but there is nothing there that has me saying I have to watch every day. But I will give it credit for getting better than it was say a year ago.

Sorry, but Jamey isn't right. It is Jamey's opinion that OLTL is better, but the ratings don't reflect that, and that is all that matters at the end of the day. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but it makes no sense that AMC is only increasing due to the press. That might get people to tune in, but something else is getting people to stay tuned in. I will admit, that I am interested in seeing what happens with AMC's ratings with Zendall now gone, but that could go either way.
As for OLTL, no one acts like themselves. Ron doesn't know how to write anyone he didn't create. The way that Bo sold out his brother is disgusting and I need someone to call them out on their behavior. I don't care the reason, I need to see Todd act like Todd...if not, get off my screen. Rex and Gigi and everyone in their story suck. I could care less about Gigi and her feelings. OLTL is getting the ratings it deserves and you cannot blame it on Nielsen, as DVR ratings do count. It isn't that no one knows what is on OLTL, it is that no one is interested in it. Fans are tuning out in droves for a reason, and that reason is Ron's horrible writing. He may have been a good breakdown writer, but he sucks as a head writer and I resent that he is going to kill a show that can still be saved.

I'll give you that Kitty, but it could also be that viewers of AMC know that changes are coming and that they are wondering what those changes are.
On OLTL,
Changes need to be made there, too.

IMO here is what ails OLTL...
Todd is not a hero and stop playing him as if he is. Having Tea and Blair fighting over him in a genre geared towards women is insulting to these one time strong/smart women. PUNISH Todd once and for all and let these women move from his orbit.
I will get blasted for this, but who cares. Even though KISH is popular on message boards they aren't popular with the majority of the audience. It isn't necessarily the gay angle, but that neither of these characters are connected to anyone we care about. If Billy Douglas had come back and had Marty to support him it would be interesting. If Dorian's grandson River or Viki's grandson Duke came back and they were connected to core characters it would be a better story playing into the history of the show. To have two characters that weren't even known a year ago carry such a big story doesn't make sense.
I loved Mitch Laurence back in the day, but a little of Mitch goes a long way. He has come in and swallowed Llanview. That he is manipulating Dorian after all she has been through is wrong. Again, a strong woman is playde as an idiot.
Two years ago Starr and Cole were great young lovers. Wonderful innocent romance. Why arent' we seeing more of them? They don't do squat.

I really can't lurke anymore with some of these comments. If OLTL was as great as half of you say, would all the critical acclaim it gets result in better ratings. Truth is, what draws critical acclaim, doesn't always translate to success with fans and or america. Look at the way movies are rated today. Do you always agree with movie critics....no!!!
Fact is OLTl is not connecting with fans, period.
The ratings for the entire genre are down as well, but that is just the nature of soaps today unfortunately.
The loathing for GH on this board is almost comical. I would argue that their ratings are more of a sign of the times, as they are still very successful in comparison to other soaps in the main demographic of women 18-49. Ladies love that show, because of Steve & Maurice.
Now, as a male, who loves the mob element, I will be the first to admit that the show is at times mob heavy. The writers are aware of the fans feelings, and are working on developing storylines with Patrick & Robin, the return to prominence of the spencer/cassadine familiies, and the return of the Ward family. All this is in the works to attract the GH purists back. And as someone who has loved the show for 15+ years, I must say I am intrigued.
You can't just write Steve & Maurice off or downgrade them to recurring. Soaps have short term and long terms arcs so that character building is real and believable. It takes time to build characters up to be able to carry the same load that Maurice and Steve have, and maintain authenticity to the genre and credibility with the fans. Patience, GH will be back!
