Very sad news to read this morning. I pass my sympathies to Francis's entire family. It doesn't matter how old someone is, whenever a loved one passes it is not something you can be prepared for. Even though we having seen Gran in a long time on our screens, knowing that Gran was just in the kitchen making donuts made everything okay. She will surely be missed.

RIP Frances Reid
From the few years that I watched days from 93-98 I always enjoyed her talks with her "granddaughter" Hope. She truly was a great asset to the DAYS family and she will be missed. My hears goes out to her family and friends!

I have watched Days since I was a baby. My Mom would put me in my high chair to feed me lunch while she watched. I have always loved Mrs. H - and I have always loved and respected Frances Reid. I feel like a dear friend has left us. My prayers are with her and her family.

I don't usually cry when I hear a star passing away. Soap actors are different. I have literally watched Frances Reid on Days on a daily basis for four decades. Their characters are friends and family! I have missed seeing her in recent years and always treasured even a few moments that she was able to be on the show. I wish I had one of her Doughnuts right now

Certainly a tribute and celebration should be in store. No need for tears. FR graced people's homes for four decades and lived a very full life. 95! Thanks for creating a warm loving character that was loved by millions. On a side note, I only hope that Helen Wagner is able to film the last episodes of ATWT since she had the opening line of the show.

Even though Alice hasn't appeared on screen in over two and a half years, she will still be deeply missed. Frances Reid brought a certain class to the show that can't be replicated.
Hopefully Dena Higley can craft a tribute that's more fitting than poor Mickey's funeral. I imagine there will be a funeral for Alice this spring, and we may see the returns of Marie, Nick, Jennifer, Jack, and maybe Marlena and John.

What a terrible loss to the soap world and to the world in general. She was a gracious and sweet lady. But what a long, fulfilling life she must have had, and I hope that gives comfort to her loved ones in the coming days. She will be missed.

Ok. I am back. Just went and got 2 of the old-fashioned glazed donuts at Starbucks. They were good.
I started watching Days in 1988 and Tom and Alice were always the grandparents you wanted. Alice Horton and Frances Reid were dynamite. Her appearances in recent years were far and few of course but my favs were the 4th of July picnic where she told Jeremy to get it together and also the exchange Alice and Jennifer had when Jennifer was moving to London with Jack.
I hope for any combo of Hortons (Tommy, Sandy, Marie, Jessica, Bill, Jennifer, Mike, Laura, Melissa, Sarah, etc.) for the service. Marlena would be great too. I recently saw a clip from years ago where Marlena was having nightmares and asked Alice to come over which she did. She made her cocoa and calmed her. I don't know what the storyline was but I am sure Stefano was tormenting Marlena.
I don't know what else to say. I knew she was 95 but it still hurts. Very much so.

Truly a sad day for soaps. I'm happy that Frances had a good long life, but she and her character will be greatly missed. I've watched Days on and off for almost 30 years and can't imagine Salem w/o Gran in the other room making doughnuts.
Storyline wise, here's hoping that Alice's death will bring Bo and Hope back together once and for all. Mrs. H. would want it that way!

Deeply saddened by this news. I grew up with my grandmother watching Days everyday. I am saddened for the Days cast and crew, the Days fan and the daytime community. To lose anyone, especially a veteran of the genre is very sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family.
And to Ken Corday, you BETTER go ALL OUT for the funeral services for Alice Grayson Horton. I don't care what needs to be done, but this long time viewer of the show (almost 30 years) thinks the last remaining original character/actress on the show deserves it. I expect the following actors to return:
Lisa Trusel (Melissa)
Melissa Reeves (Jennifer - her husband is back in LA for GH, NOT out of the realm of possibility)
Matt Ashford (Jack)
Deidre Hall (Marlena)
Drake Hogestyn (John)
Bryan Dattilo (Lucas)
Jaime Lyn Bauer (Laura)
Blake Berris (Nick)
Ashley Benson (Abby)
Maree Cheatham (Marie)
Mary Beth Evans (Kayla)
Patsy Pease (Kimberly)
Essentially, any and all Hortons who have had a history on the show. Bill Horton and Sarah Horton are characters, to my knowledge, who have had many actors play over the years or the most recent recast (Bill's) is no longer around so they can be in the kitchen like Sarah was for Mickey's funeral. I would like Mike Horton back but I doubt Roark Critchlow or Michael T. Weiss to come back and I DON'T want a recast as that would be pointless. And I wouldn't mind John Clarke (Mickey) coming back for a cameo and just serving as a family friend who is paying his last respects to Alice and Maggie saying he is like family. Essentially, I want him around to pay his last respects to a VERY important person to the Salem canvas!
And while John and Marlena are not Hortons, Alice is too big of a character to not have them back as they interacted with each other for years and respected each other. And with Kayla and Kim, they are Bradys and they have a close relationship with the Hortons so they SHOULD be there as any close family friends would be in a time like this.
And they could further incorporate her passing into Maggie's drinking storyline. They could have Maggie head over to Alice's to counsel and console her and with Alice now gone, the last person to help her through Mickey's passing is gone and then she really loses it and can believably fall off the wagon for me.
I'm so sad. I want her to be respected fully on this show and I'm afraid Ken Corday will botch it up. Please prove me wrong Ken! Frances Reid is NOT some "spoke on a wheel"!!!!!!!!!

I agree with all your choices, snags, and I would add Carrie and Austin to that list.
Nick, Lucas, Melissa, and Marie are MUSTS. Maybe John Clarke will cameo as Ghost Mickey. I definitely see Jack and Jennifer coming back, hopefully with Ashley Benson as Abby. Jaime Lyn Bauer too, I do think either Weiss or Critchlow would return (hopefully Weiss). Bill and Tommy Horton should be recast since the actors who played those roles have also passed on (my suggestions: Kale Browne and William Russ). Maybe even Sandy Horton could come back. Sarah Horton should be recast too, but since they didn't recast her for Mickey's funeral, I doubt they ever will.

like i said earlier i can just imagine the show focused on how Mrs. H was always there for Melanie and Nathan and Stephanie and Will while the other characters like Doug Julie Marlena and the other forgotten Hortons are in the Den...
RIP Francis you will be missed.

Oh Snags what a tall order! I wish that could all come true! Viewers of this DAYS will probably be lucky to even get a mention of her passing in the story. A hundred bucks bets she will remain "in the other room". Corday has burned us too much.

I grew up watching Days with my mom and when we went to visit my grandmother sometimes, we used to watch it with her too. I love Grandma Horton. Unfortunately, my Memaw (grandmother) hasn't watched Days since 2003 when they started the Salem Serial Killer storyline. My mom doesn't watch Days anymore either. Anyway, I'll remember to tell her and my mom about Frances Reid's death. I really want them both to watch the funeral.
I agree about bringing back all those people you mentioned. It's possible for all of them to come back too. Of all the children, only Marie would be able to be there. Tommy hasn't been around for years and both main actors who played Bill are dead. Maree Cheatham wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility considering she is still acting. Same with Melissa, especially since she was back for Mickey's funeral.
They'd better have a real funeral and not just show the reception like they did with Mickey. I will be VERY infuriated if they do. It made me mad enough that they didn't have a funeral for Mickey onscreen.

By the time I started to watch Days in 1990, Alice was already the grandmother figure on the show. Always there to give romantic advise to the young people of Salem. Every once in a while she would get to do something in a story, like punch out a bad guy at Jack and Jennifer's stuntman wedding! Fun stuff.
in a 2003 Archive of American Television interview the last question to Frances was "How would you like to be remembered." She modestly said "I don't think I will be remembered. I think most people are not remembered. Maybe...some people that I had an affect on. Some of the people that I worked with, I made them feel comfortable at times. Or they enjoyed doing a scene as I enjoyed doing a scene. And...that's the way I'll be remembered...(laughs) ...not much."
I disagree. There are millions of Days fans who will remember. Thank you for the wonderful memories Frances Reid.
