Paul Rauch on Darius McCrary "Audition Was One of The Greatest The Network Had Seen In 20 Years"

Lord in the morning.... On Air On Soaps' Michael Fairman interviewed The Young and the Restless executive producer/head writer Maria Arena Bell and co-show runner Paul Rauch where the duo opened up about when they feel they know an actor is the right fit for the part.

MICHAEL:When the two of you are in auditions together, do you know immediately when the right actor walks in for the part you are casting?

MARIA: We have been really in sync, such as the character of Daisy. When Yvonne Zima came in to read for that role, it was like, “Wow, did she pop!” She made us go, “Oh, my gosh. She is fantastic!” You just feel it…. that everything we have talked about in regards to that character, and then that person walks in, you know it. It was also true of Darius.

PAUL: The Darius McCray audition was one of the greatest the network had seen in 20 years.

MARIA: The quality of the actors that were up for the role was extraordinarily high. Everyone who came in for the final audition, and there were four in the finals, they were all fantastic. They were all very different from one another, and in the end, it was about this kind of special quality that Darius had. We just felt that “Star Quality”.

Well, Hell and Roach are a joke.  Darius was the best guy for the job as Malcolm?  sorry, not buying it.  Darius is a ok actor, but  I am not buying him as Malcolm.  What the heck is this show is doing?

Yvonne Zima. Now I know why she looks so familiar. She's the sister of Madeline Zima who played on The Nanny.

Personally, I think Darius McCrary is doing a very good job and I've noticed he acts rings around some of the other cast members and he hasn't done that much.  JMO.

If four actors auditioned for the role of "Malcolm" and McCrary's was "one of the greatest the network has seen in 20 years," then those four other actors must have S-U-C-K-E-D. I mean, flat out crappy. McCrary (or any other actor) could have come into this role and in the time the character has been on screen made an amazing impression and really convinced me as a viewer that this IS Malcolm Winters. Darius McCrary looks uncomfortable and has done nothing special. CBS has also canceled two soap operas in the last year and has begun dismantling their daytime drama lineup; I'm not sure that their judgment is all that impressive.

First off love that sayin Jillian! These ppl are obviously seeing something I am not. Darrius is doing a great job w/the limited screen time but this reeks of them obviously setteling. As for that baby Yvonne, she is laughbly bad when she's trying to potray evil. I think she would've worked w/different characterization. Some roles are just not for some ppl and that is the case.

They obviously don't watch their own show and this entire interview is way too ass-kissy for my taste. Their regime destroyed so many characters, and brough us CFMac, Daisy, Eden, Falcom, etc. I hope they get fired soon.

Scout, i agree i will take LML over them and god knows i hated her crap and stopped watching for awhile.

I read this website faithfully and daily, never made a comment. I actually had to register and log on just to echo the WTF?! sentiment. Darius isn't stinking up the place like I thought he would but he's just not Malcom (best audition in 20 years? What did Billy Miller audition 21 years ago?!). Daisy...umm her character was about as good an idea as Stacey Morasco, and is acted about as well. Let me guess, later in the interview they also compared Clementine Ford to Jeanne Cooper?! Ugh.

Here's an interesting point, however - how much of the dislike is because the [actors] are poor, and how much of the dislike is because the [writing] for the actors is poor?  For Malcolm, Darius McCrary is a good actor and I can live with him as Malcolm but the writing for him...ugh.  On the other hand, Daisy I'm sure is a good actress, but not for the part of being evil and bitchy and whatnot.  In her case, she's a victim of not being able to act the part [and] of bad writing.

Whatever, those two didn't sound like they wanted to give an interview anyway. All I picked up from that interview was blah, blah and the aweful comment about Yvonne somebody being good ------- what a load of crap!!!

Darius interview, best in 20 years eh?

What a softball interview. I don't expect Walter Cronkite, but come on!

Not only was that question about Y&R addressing "gay issues" a bad one, but Maria's answer was a total non-answer.

Lame

Then the other actors that auditioned for the part of Malcolm must have  really been bad for him to say that.

I guess those two cannot admit when they are wrong. I am sorry but this show is a chore to watch lately, I really am thinking of taking it off my dvr. I just want to see a little more of crazy Patty (LOVE the actress), and um...hmm....I like Jill and Kay, but the rest I have been fast forwarding like crazy! I know it's been said a hundred times here but I look forward to OLTL lately, but, I will be happier when Mitch is gone again.

I definitely agree with DanMan869 on the fact that Darius McCrary looks uncomfortable in the role.  It just seems like he doesn't have a feel for what is going on around him.  Also, I think that he doesn't seem to act like Shemar Moore's Malcolm either.  You have to embody the character's previous take, considering how long Shemar Moore played the role.  Not only does Darius not look like the previous Malcolm, but he also does not act like him.  It's almost like he's trying too hard.
As for Yvonne Zima, I totally agree with everybody on that.  She's annoying and is getting on my nerves.  Maybe she hasn't been able to show her psycho side yet, but still.  They have the worst recasts on the planet on Y&R.  Nobody hardly looks like the previous actor much at all.
I have to disagree about Patty. I HATE that storyline so much.  Get rid of Stacy Haiduk altogether and I'll be happy.

I think the pay being offered for the roles would have reflected on the quality of actors sent in to audition. If I have been out of work for long enough and the chance of a regular gig came up then my agent will more than convince me to go for it.

I believe Darius given some time can turn the Malcolm role into his own. They need to get him signed up with a personal trainer. Also, work on his facial hair. The guy just needs some grooming and in time, he will relax into the role.

Infact, from now on "I BELONG TO TEAM DARIUS". Time to give the dude a chance.

What I don't understand is why they are barely using him if they are so impressed by him. I don't believe it's down to wanting to ease him in, because since when have they cared about easing newcomers in? Their favorites, like Billy. Muhney's Adam, Daisy, were dominating airtime from early on.

Remember when they said John Driscoll's audition made them cry? And what have they done with Chance? They just say this stuff to get attention for themselves.

These people are interested only in getting press for how awesome they are. The show is meaningless to them.

By the way, did you notice the little dig at Jess Walton, where Rauch said he had to help her act? If they think Jess is not good enough while Yvonne Zima is fantastic, that says it all.

I would like some of the drugs these two are evidently on.  The Malcom guy is terrible and Daisy could not act her way out of a paper bag.  If these two are the caliber of Y and R,  there is no wonder the show has gotten so bad in last year. Mac, C. Ford, is another horrible example,  they could replace her with a mop and have a better actor and along with these 2 they have 3 terrible actors. They should read all of these and see how wrong they are.

I agree about Jess Walton. She's a wonderful actress.  As for firing the two. Well, that's not going to happen with Maria Arena Bell, considering she's  a member of the Bell family.  Maybe Paul Rauch will leave eventually. One can only hope.
