DC #527: OLTL's Kish-tastrophe

On today's special episode of Daytime Confidential Luke, Jamey, Jillian and Regan weigh in on One Life to Live's shocking dismissal of Brett Claywell and Scott Evans and the end of the soap's popular, groundbreaking Kish love story.

From the quote about Kish not resonating "with the mainstream audience" that has outraged so many fans, to the multiple storylines that have contributed to OLTL's low ratings, DC digs into all the latest in this continuing saga.

The DC gang explores why OLTL seems to be cleaning house of the very minority stars and young talent which has afforded the ratings-challenged sudser such critical acclaim. We pose the question, what has happened to the diversity Agnes Nixon created this show to reflect?

We also ponder, should Brett and Scott return if ABC offers? Do TPTB really think they are giving the majority of the fans what they want, while destroying the show in the process? Jamey wonders, will the move to oust Kish be Frank Valentini's Maureen Bauer moment? What, if anything, can OLTL do to turn things around in Llanview?

No other topic since Daytime Confidential.com's inception, from Guiding Light's cancellation to Victoria Rowell's shocking tell-all interview, has received such a vocal response from Daytime Confidential readers and listeners. More podcast fans have called in to our hotline about OLTL's Kish-trastropy than about the firings of Drake Hogestyn, Deidre Hall, Mary Beth Evans and Stephen Nichols at Days of our Lives. Listen to fans voice their opinions about the controversy at the end of the episode. This is truly an episode Llanview lovers won't wanna miss.

I'm not happy that they ended this storyline, but we lost some other good couples as well, and still stuck with the show.  So I'm still sticking with the show, no matter what other people saying. And i still say OLTL is the best soap.

Although I will say that I can't wait for Ford and Hannah to go down.

jamey, you are so right on about this!  How the hell is Todd the rapist "mainstream" but not Kish?! What the hell is wrong with Frons!

Brava! Simply an award-winning podcast. This is just soooo sad. One Life was our only hope.

ABC Daytime mainstream audience loves mobsters who never get their comeuppance, stupid teenage twits who mark an innocent man for liquidation, while protecting the creep who has been abusing them for quite a while, maniacal fathers who kidnap cadavers and plan to rape their own daugthers, rapists who romance their amnesiac victims. Off course a gay love story is not going to resonate with them.

Great podcast. I hope ABC listens to this, cause it shows just how big of a stupid move this is.

Just finished listening to the podcast and have to agree with everything that was said by everybody. I was not a OLTL viewer prior to June of last year, being a long-time ATWT fan; my disappointment with the latter show led me to give OLTL a try when I learned that they were developing a gay couple between Fish and Kyle.

I instantly became a fan of the show, riveted not only by the terrific performances of Scott Evans and Brett Claywell, but also the wonderful Ilene Kristen, Robin Strasser, Florencia Lozano, Tika Sumpter, Kassie DePaiva, Amanda Setton, Tuc Watkins, Scott Clifton and David Fumero; as well as the smart and witty dialogue and magnificent plotting. I was going around telling people it was the best show on TV.

Now, I'm embarrassed and disappointed by the show. The show has become a mess, with Mitch and Rex competing to see who can chew the most scenery, Gigi and Jessica competing to see who can be the bigger idiot, Langston throwing herself at manwhore Ford, that horrible Todd chasing after Kelly, etc.

On top of that, I'm embarrassed and disappointed by the way TIIC have handled this situation, literally throwing these two actors under the bus in a particularly horrific way. They've lost a viewer here. I look forward to seeing Brett and Scott go on to bigger and better things.

For all of those people who think they are knocking off these characters off to cancel the show, I really don't think they are doing that. Like I said, I'm not happy either with losing Kish, but we had other couples gone as well, and still stuck with the show, and that's what I'm doing even with kish leaving.

For me i grew up on oltl through eterna and other great stories,This show has such a rich history.Yes losing kish is going to be a great loss but i dont think it defines the show.As i said i have 20 plus years invested in this show and i only see things getting better.Dont get me wrong the ford and langston storyline and the jessica storyline needto be wrapped up right away.Going forward i think its pivotal to have thorsten kaye return as patrick thornhart.I will continue to watch as i have through good and bad times.

One thing I disagree with...people dismissing the complaints that Dorian was seriously out of character during Big Gay Wedding.  IMO, anytime a character is "out of character" you really hurt the show. It didn't make any sense that Dorian started out as working for Lowell, who was anti-gay marriage and then suddenly made a 180 in her politics.  It really hurt the integrity of the character and of the show.

I despise ABC for pulling Kish but I really wish that you guys would acknowledge that RC and FV made some serious mistakes with this storyline by tying the romance to politics.  I don't care what your politics are, viewers always hate any kind of obvious political preaching. The way to tell a story about the importance of marriage equality is to have it be subtle and natural, like the what we saw with Scotty & Kevin on B&S. OLTL missed an amazing opportunity to turn the hearts of many viewers. If they had focused first on the love story and waited until the natural point in the story when marriage would be natural topic -- like now with baby Sierra -- it would have worked so much better. Kish in and of themselves were wonderful.  But the Dorian add-on, the silly politics plot, and so on took the attention away from Kish. I would bet money that if Kish were just Kish, a couple, and not symbol that the so-called mainstream audience would have taken to them.  Sadly, just as Kish are positioned to become a traditional soap couple with the baby drama, they are now axed!!!  This is just so stupid, I can hardly stand it.

"Find your soap where you can"

I agree. Has anyone ever tried CAPRICA? It is spinoff show of Battlestar Galactica. It's a sci-fi show, but it is Soooooo a soap!

WATCH CAPRICA!

If you want to watch a gay soap watch Spartacus.  It is heaven on earth.

As for KISH I am heartbroken, and so disappointed with ABC.  No more soaps for me.  I have been a fan for over 30 years (One Life was my first),  I stopped watching last week, and will not return unless KISH returns.  Plain and simple.

Love DC, keep up the good work.

Great podcast!  You guys said most everything there was to say.  I'd still like to know more about how FV, who has been nothing but supportive of the diversity heretofore, came to make such a blunder, not just Kish but getting rid of Sky and apparently any hint of melanin.  I've heard nothing but that he's a highly professional, stand-up guy who is really good at his job, so what's with all this?  What are Frons and Ron's role in this?

Joss-I will watch the remaining KISH story on YouTube.  I cannot stomach One Life any longer.  I am furious and sickened over KISH leaving.  I have watched daytime for over 30 years, and I have never been this mad.  I have had more time to read at night and listen to music (and visit DC:)  This pushed me over the edge and I have given up daytime (for good).  I am tired of being taken for granted by networks, who do not listen to the viewers.  I have also been catching up on Dexter, U.S. of Tara, and Spartacus.

Thanks so much for a great interview!  I loved how candid all of you were and how you spoke directly to the key points.  This is one of the worst decisions I have ever seen and unfortunately for OLTL, it will cost them a lot of viewers.

Really disappointing to see such an amazing love story be ditched in this way.  Truly heartbreaking.

Did it occur to folks that the better the ratings are for OLTL while Kish is frontburner, the better the chance to bring them back?

This was a great, on point podcast. Thank you Jamey for pointing out that Frank is not actually a bigot, so much as he buckled to Brian Frons' bigotry. He probably felt that his hands were tied and he would lose his job if he didn't, but this was still a mistake. I think more than anything this is a reason to fire Brian Frons and if the ABC top bosses don't see that they are *idiots!*
Are they really going to get rid of Destiny and Shaun as well? Damn Brian Frons! Seriously!

I listened to this podcast with a heavy heart. The reality is...times change quickly, but people change slowly....at least that is what I have found.

I also think that it is worh it to note the type of society that we live in. Regardless of why..because no one can really pinpoint a reason....violence has always been more acceptable than sex.

Example...Video game, grand theft auto...was panned by critics because there were hookers giving blowjobs in the game, but no one noticed the irony that the sole intent of GTA is about stealing things and getting away with it.  A person can lose their job for sex related scandals, but will fight tooth and nail to allow anyone to carry a gun anywhere.  A movie's rating is based upon sexual innuendo or reference, but can still be PG-13 with multiple acts of violence and bloodshed.

I pray for our society when our morals and belief systems are so screwed up. I would have more respect for people if they were consistent....but they are not. Violence is more acceptable than sex...any kind of sex.  So yes, while it is sad that incest is okay but homosexuality isn't...that seems to be the world that we now live in.

What is even sadder is that ABC felt that there was nothing wrong with using this as an excuse.I am not sure if they can pinpoint who mainstream America is, who watches OLTL and which storyline they specifically didn't like.  But the fact that they felt that homosexuality can be used as a scapegoat and they could still get away with it...is sad, and it will be worse if it turns out that it is true.

Great podcast.  And everyone who left comments in support of Kish were awesome!  Thanks for speaking for me also.
