Reality Bytes' Tristan Rogers: "The Nature of Soaps is Just Too Compelling For it Not to Survive"

General Hospital veteran-turned-web soap creator Tristan Rogers spoke to TV Guide Canada about why he initially left ABC daytime's flagship series, and why he's now pledging his time to seeing the soap opera genre revitalized via his upcoming multi-platform sudser Reality Bytes.

TVG: When you starred on GH, and please correct me if I’m wrong, I got the impression that you wanted to leave daytime for bigger things. And here you are now trailblazing the soap medium into the future. You’ve also become one of soap opera’s biggest advocates. Has that surprised you?

TR: Yes. Because I’m tired of participating in a medium that isn’t evolving, I find myself extremely passionate about helping it evolve. This is a genre that I feel very strongly about because it’s beautifully simplistic in its own way and it’s great entertainment. Consequently, even though I understand why the networks are doing what they’re doing from an intellectually business point of view, I find it hard to believe it’s disappearing simply because it hasn’t evolved. I believe it’s possible that the soap medium can resurrect itself. C’mon — talent shows were history until American Idol came along. I have to believe that someone will come along and do the same thing for soaps again. The nature of soaps is just too compelling for it not to survive.

Yeah, soaps need to start embracing new storyline ideas, stop recycling the same CRAP, hire FANTASTIC actors----THE FIRST TIME----instead of doing all of these damn recasts, because most of the time when a show recasts a character, the new actor is WORSE than the old one, and eventually the audience stops caring about the character. They need NEW writers, and they need to get back to the basics!!! Daytime doesn't have the budget to do RIDICULOUS plot-driven stories, so why not focus on CHARACTERS????!!!! If I want to see ridiculous special effects and random craziness, I have cable and HUNDREDS of shows to choose from!!! If daytime doesn't get it's act together, there will be NO soaps around FIVE years from now!!!!

He's more optimistic than I am.

I don't see it changing, they seem clueless as what  they should do to rejuvenate this genre.

Totally agree, alstonboy, soaps needs new writers and new s/ls instead of plots.

Can someone please fill me in why this guy is always interviewed about the future of soaps?  wasn't he on GH years and years ago?  and had a short stint on night shift?  He spoke at a conference about the future of daytime and is quoted a lot.

Is it just because he is one of the few talking about it?  In my own opinion, I don't find him very friendly and that has nothing to do with the above interview.

All soaps really need to do is go back to the core roots bring back vet characters what fans fell in love with soaps; that's what ATWT and GL fans were begging; Days listen to there fans they've improved. Look how bizarre Y&R has gotten, won't even get started on B&B mess.

Tristan Rogers need to be the Executive Producer of GH, coupled with Sri Rao as the Headwriter. What they do, will set the tone for other show and wll lead to the revival of the genre. And yes, Frons needs to FIRED!
