Paul Rauch Celebrates 50 Years in Business

MSN interviewed The Young and the Restless executive producer Paul Rauch, who is celebrating 50 years in daytime, and asked him about his storied career and his current job at Y&R.

Do you think that sort of out-of-the-box thinking is what it will take to "save" daytime?

It's now a business of hanging on, more than anything else. Though I have to say, this show is not hanging on: We're building on our ratings! We're considerably up over last year in this last week [March 15-19] in the 18-49 category.

Why do you think that is?

Because Maria is making great story and the show looks great on the air. That's basic, right? It is kind of about magic, but it's not magic, because the people know what they're doing.

Hogwash!!! Y&R is far from MAGICAL nowadays. He's pretty much OBLIGATED to say wonderful things about Maria and everyone else on this show since he's the executive producer!!! I doubt he even WATCHES the show. If he did, he would see what everyone else sees-----too many PSYCHOS, too many DOPPLEGANGERS, too much darkness and depression, too many boring couples and too many characters being systematically DUMBED DOWN to accomodate plot-driven silliness. Y&R is still a good soap, and far better than all the other soaps (besides GH!) but it's far from MAGICAL!!!

We now see why this show is unlikely to change anytime soon---Paul Rauch is clueless!!! He has his head stuck in the sand, he's not looking at the REAL picture, and he's simply relying on Maria Bell to run this show for him. He's nothing more than a glorified "yes man" who simply shows up, collects his SEVEN figure paycheck and goes home. No harm, no foul. The show is still #1 in the ratings, so he assumes that all is perfect and there's no room for improvement.

Just like Victoria Rowell said in an interview "Even iron bends!!!" Stop being so complacent, Paul!!!

I was never a big fan of Paul Rauch while he was Executive producer at Guiding Light.

Having said that, once he "left" , GL truly stopped being GL.  Up until that point, I had always had some hope that the Bauers would return (Peter Simon did return briefly) and that the show would regain footing.

Once Rauch left, the bottom truly fell out.  No one from the show would ever mention a future storyline centered around the Bauers and soon the show revolved around criminals and crime solving.

The sets were destroyed and GL truly became some other show......
I watched until the bitter end but that is only because I had a long history of watching the show.

I think the problem with Y&R and most of the other soaps today is that TPTB are all keeping their heads buried in the sand, refusing to hear the opinions of the fans who have followed the shows for many years, and can see their beloved soaps being de-railed by poor writing and little attention paid to the history of the show.  Until the viewer's voice is actually listened to, the writers will continue to take us down the pathway of crazy plot driven stories which pay no attention to the history of the characters in the shows.

I definitely have my doubts about this Rauch guy.
Anyone that claims "Daisy", played by Yvonne Zima and "Malcom", played by Darius McCrary were the best acting they had seen in years have to be off their Meds.  If he had anything to do with the casting of "Mac", played by Clementime Ford,  he shoud be fired for that alone. She reminds me of a wooden Cigar Store Mannequin and never changes expression.  The story lines are so pathetic since Bill Bell has been gone that it is really sad. He and Maria Bell are both a couple of Hacks.

I have never been so bored with Y&R as this last 6 months. Repetition, repetition, repetition!!  Last year Kay was in an explosion and now what do we have, an explosion. Sheila has plastic surgery to look like Phyllis so their height and weight and entire body as well as their voice becomes the same. Yeah and Patty must have watched the show as the IDENTICAL thing happens to her. GIVE me a break. The creativity is gone and they used to have some storylines related to positive things. I haven't seen something positive on the show in forever..  This soap is as boring, repetitive and negative as our government leaders..

#5 LOL'ing@ your comment!

How in the world can he call this "out of the box thinking" when they're revisiting a storyline --the whole "let's get Lauren", which has been DONE TO DEATH--and we have yet another actress playing a twin role in what has to be some of the DUMBEST writing ever?!

Yeah, that's real innovative Y&R.

Paul is a joke and just needs to zip it, LOL.  Please, Y&R is in a mess now.

This man is one of the few left still working who worked with Irna Phillips. The guy is a legend.

Say what you will about Y&R right now (and I do agree that the quality is off right now) but I say congrats to him.
I'd raise a glass if it wasn't lunchtime.

Paul Reich should've retired 49 1/2 years ago.   The production value of Y&R has plummeted since Ed Scott left.
