DAYS Scribe Dena Higley on Hope’s Story Twist

Fancast’s Sara Bibel spoke with Days of Our Lives’ head writer Dena Higley on the show’s recent and shocking reveal of heroine Hope Brady’s (Kristian Alfonso) secret activities. Higley explains how she came up with the idea for Hope’s double life.

As a viewer, I had one of those,”Wait, what the heck?” moments when Hope’s new storyline about her double life started last week.   What is going on with her?

All my favorite storylines come out of just waking up in the middle of the night and going, “I know what I want to do.”  It’s not doing research or trying to read books or watch movies. It’s just I woke up and I knew I wanted to tell that Hope storyline and it just fell into place.  I picked up the phone, called [Co-Executive Producer] Gary Tomlin, and said, “This is what I want to do.”  He’s like,”That’s the craziest idea you’ve ever had, and I love it.”  So it came out of the blue. It just hit me that we would have so much fun with Hope because it’s coming out of the kidnapping and the drama with Bo.  I think that’s all very relatable to women.  You have trouble with your husband and you get angry and what do you do with that anger?  What if all of your anger in your life took on a life of its own? What would that look like?  I wanted it to be kind of a fun “woo woo” story and at the same time I wanted it to be a relatable woman’s story.  I think we’re all going to be cheering because we all can relate, I think.  I’ve been angry at a few men in my time.

Do the pills that Hope is taking have anything to do with her double life?
Yes, absolutely.  That’s where we’re going.  Right before I went to bed I watched something on TV that was talking about that kind of medicinal thing.

I bet if we find out if Agnes Nixon came up w/story on the toilet, we will all be saying “that is some riviing stuff”. We have to give credit where credit is due. Idk if she is writing the show or not, but she is on the credits and when the show was blah she was crucified like Jesus so since the show is good and she is still the HW she should get the credit along w/Ken, Gary, and Chris. Days is nice soap. Nothing new, just stories that are very staple and appeal to the masses and is playing in the shows deserved sucess. And plus it is continuing Kristian’s storyline which she has been amazing. The day she and Crystal shared scene she has been on her game and has been awesome to watch.

And hey it could be worse. Dena could have been emailed storyline ideas from the the fourth hour if the Today shows topic outline. Well NBC doesn’t own Days, but y’all know what I mean. Trying to make a funny.

Abuse of pills is a very real problem in this country right now. So kudos to Dena.

Pill addiction is nothing new on soaps (Vanessa on GL in the 80s, Alan on GH in the 90s) but regardless this should give the luminous Kristian Alfonso good scenes to look forward to.

From everything I see (in print and for myself) and hear, it seems Days of our Lives and General Hospital are the best soaps at the moment. They are doing what soaps are supposed to do – entertain us.
Even in that dark, sad hamlet that is Port Charles.

Completely agree with this whole post.  Like I told you in a recent post Days is listening to their fans to some degree which I can respect, some shows are not doing that and the ratings are reflecting that.  Days still has room for improvement, the promo does make me opmistic for the summer to come.  I’m thrilled Kristian has a storyline, as long it doesn’t go into no Princess Gina bs this will remain a good storyline.

Days is really good, it’s the only one I watch (I tune into Y&R some just to see where it’s going). The Hope story is pretty out there, but it looks like it’ll get interesting.
Days is also pretty balanced. The only thing I can’t stand is too much Melanie. And the boys pretend she’s the hottest thing around. Uh, that would be Chloe!

i don’t know why but that portion of the interview is hilarious to me.  I don’t know if its "relateable to women". haha

and commenting on that picture…whatever happened to that "groundbreaking" autism storyline?

First of all, let me say that I am an "As The World Turns" viewer; although I am tempted by the opportunity to watch Louise Sorel, Crystal Chappel and the luminous Suzanne Rogers all in one show-and I may check it out in the fall; if they continue to be featured.

That said, regarding this storyline and Dena Higley’s interview, it sounds to me like a very interesting and creative storyline that is indeed plausible considering the frequently reported and somewhat well-known side effects of the commonly prescribed sleeping pill Ambien.

It is understandable that the writers and producers of "Days of Our Lives" would be intentionally vague about what particular pills Hope is taking because prescription sleeping medications-actually prescription medications, in general-are major advertisers on seemingly every television show; daytime dramas included.

I mentioned the fact that I watch "As The World Turns" because a few months ago the character Lily took (an unnamed) prescription pill and found herself waking up in similarly dramatic circumstances that were directly related to her daytime or waking life emotional trauma that was interfering with her sleep in the first place. Again, the medication was unnamed; but it sure seemed like an Ambien reaction to me. So really this is perfect fodder for drama.
