HomeTVAll My ChildrenMTV Developing American Version of Raunchy, Brit Soap, Skins Jamey Giddens May 11, 2010 All My Children, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live, Skins, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and The Restless 12 Comments That sound you hear is "Mainstream America" clutching her collective pearls. MTV is reportedly developing a U.S. version of the U.K.’s scandalously-raunchy, young adult soap Skins, according to Deadline.com. The series is slated for a January launch, according to the site. The pilot for Skins— which allegedly is a pet project for MTV Vice Prexy Liz Gateley— is being written by Bryan Elsley, co-creator of the original series, and get this, actual teenagers will likely pen the scripts for the sudser! What? New blood involved in creating soap operas? Oh yeah, I forgot. Cable channels actually want their soaps to succeed. Check out a clip from the U.K. version of Skins after the jump. (May not be suitable for work!) 12 Responses Ryan-Scott May 11, 2010 This sounds like more 24 carat Grade A crap. Skippin’ it. What an unattractive group of kids too by the way. For anyone who hasn’t seen Skins before, I highly recommend it… Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 May 11, 2010 My problem with these kinds of shows is trying to understand what the characters/actors are saying behind all of those HEAVY accents!! I recommend subtitles. Hope I didn’t offend anyone!!! I see nothing wrong with NORMAL looking people being featured on television. It’s not all about plastic-looking Barbie/Ken dolls, model good looks and biologically advantaged "gods and goddesses" prancing around the screen looking absolutely PERFECT. I’ll take regular looking people in a well-written, well-acted drama ANY day of the week over the status quo, which is usually not as well-written or realistic. Beautiful people don’t always equal GREAT television!!!!!! Log in to Reply josser May 11, 2010 Alstonboy, It’s a British show, made for Brits. If you try watching it, you’ll see that the accents are not that thick. Skins is an incredibly involving, richly entertaining show. The episodes are written by teenagers with the help of adults. I doubt MTV will have any thing nearly as provocative as the original Skins, which, while sometimes over the top, are very real about the emotional journey of the teen years. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 May 11, 2010 I will give it a try………I always say that I will watch anything at least ONCE. It does seem more exciting than some of the American teen soaps that I have seen in the past decade. Log in to Reply Luke May 11, 2010 I chuckled reading this because I actually added this show to my Netflix instant queue, but have yet to actually watch it. Glad its quality. Will try to check it out this week Log in to Reply RebeccaJ May 12, 2010 Anybody else think that kid in the back in the obnoxious green t shirt looks like a young Ashton Kutcher?:) Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 May 12, 2010 Rebecca– Sorry, I don’t see it— but the kid in the yellow and blue track suit looks like a young Ricky Paul Goldin—with a little bit of the rapper, Drake, mixed in!!! Skins is a brilliant show. I watched both of the seasons on Netflix in about a week. It’s not for the tame at heart, and I love that about it. MTV’s version will probably be so watered down it won’t even be recognizable. Log in to Reply ghaddict May 12, 2010 OMG!!!! I freakin LOVED the original Skins….the first cast(pictured) was soooo good…..The last season (Trailer) sort of pissed me off though…Hated how it ended…..it was still good though….Don’t frack it up MTV!!!!!! also love BSG lol… Log in to Reply RebeccaJ May 12, 2010 Hmmm, ok, I didn’t read the book and I’m not familiar with the movie either, so I think he just looks familiar cuz he looks like Ashton K..lol!
