HomeTVAll My ChildrenSneak Peek: OLTL Pulls Out All The Stops For Starr X’D Lovers: The Musical! Jillian Bowe May 12, 2010 All My Children, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and The Restless 37 Comments It’s that time of year again. Prom Night is upon the denizens of Llanview, PA, and excitement is bursting over, as one of the most anticipated events in a high schooler’s life is set to play out over three, dramatic, explosive, melodic, "Starr X’d" episodes of One Life to Live, beginning this Friday, May 14. Yours truly was invited to the OLTL studio recently for a preview of Starr X’d Lovers: The Musical, and honies let me tell y’all, the gang over at OLTL has pulled out all the stops to give fans a smash, 3-day event. Several of the soap’s major storylines climax during the Glee-esque eppys, including: Langston’s (Brittany Underwood) creeping behind Markko’s (Jason Tam) back with Ford (David Gregory); Cole (Brandon Buddy) being in the slammer for almost killing Starr’s (Kristen Alderson) Pops; a "teenage" Jessica (Bree Williamson) gunning for Cristian (David Fumero), much to the chagrin of Brody (Mark Lawson) and Layla (Tika Sumpter) and Matthew (Eddie Alderson) finally getting the girl, except Danielle’s (Kelley Missal) set her sights on another… Welcome to Starr X’d Lovers: The Musical. After the tumultuous few months this soap opera and its fans have endured, Llanview lovers can rest assured executive producer Frank Valentini, head writer Ron Carlivati, and most imperatively, the cast and crew of OLTL are going to give you the passion, creativity and attention to detail that made OLTL the critical darling of the soap world for much of the past two years. Viewers will witness OLTL’s insanely-talented cast belt out such tunes as The Black Eyed Peas‘ "I Gotta Feeling" and The Go-Go‘s "Our Lips Are Sealed", among many others, interspersed with plenty of combustible revelations, romance and reality checks, the latter courtesy of Destiny (Shenell Edmonds)! I literally screamed out during some of the show-stopping numbers during the teaser performance, it was that good! In fact, excellent is truly the only word to describe the preview I witnessed of Starr X’d Lovers: The Musical. Here are just a few highlights to watch for: Roxy (Ilene Kristen) stealing the group, musical number of "Our Lips Our Sealed", not only with her singing, but with her flawless comedic timing. Blair (Kassie De Pavia) perfecting "I Can’t Live" against the backdrop of the Llanview High teens getting ready for prom, including a torn Starr (Alderson), who’s convinced she will be all alone for the big night. Destiny (Edmonds) shining during a rendition of the late Michael Jackson’s "The Way You Make Me Feel", during a fantasy scene drummed up by Darren (Jarrell Singleton). "We had an amazing time creating the musical," said Ron Carlivati, who I caught up with at the performance. "The cast and the crew did a great job in bringing the musical to life and I hope fans enjoy it as much as we did." Trust me, these three episodes will be ones OLTL fans remember for a long, long time! My only real critique concerns Jessica’s storyline. Bree Williamson continues to play Jessica more like a 7-year-old than a 17-year-old, which can be a bit distracting when the rest of the sequences are so spot on, but hey I’ll endure anything that gives me the chance to see Mark Lawson in Brody’s dress whites. Lord in the Morning! Be sure to check out One Life to Live’s Starr X’d Lovers: The Musical beginning Friday, May 14! Also, you can purchase the songs from the musical extravaganza on iTunes by going here. 37 Responses Dueler312 May 12, 2010 My exictement is going throught the roof waiting for this. Its going to be awesome. Log in to Reply kitty May 12, 2010 Soo not tuning into this crap. But leave it to Frank and Ron to think people care about nothing but the teens. I could care less about Starr being upset because her boyfriend who tried to murder her father cannot go to prom because for once he is being held accountable for his crimes. I do not care about Marrko finding out what a slut his gf is (whom I use to like, but who is now completely unlikeable) and I REALLY don’t care about teenage Jessica wanting Cristian back. If I want to watch a musical, I will go to Broadway. It isn’t why I watch soaps and this is just more proof how out of touch Ron and Frank are with their audience.
I AGREE 100% and a good example of FV being out of touch with the audience is his idiotic decision to fire two of his most talented actors Brett Claywell and Scott Evans and discontinue the best love story this show has ever had.it is not surprising that the ratings declined even further when they left. Log in to Reply No Daisy May 12, 2010 I’m looking forward to it. I’ll keep an open mind about the actual musical, but what I am really looking forward to is the wrapping up of the lame assed storylines, namely Messica and Skanky-Langston. After the fallout, I’m hoping OLTL can get back on track with more exciting plots. David needs to come home and give Matthew some advice on women. Bo and Matthew’s talks about women have been superduper great but it looks like Matthews going to lose the girl. He’ll get desparate and need to try and get the girl back. Mattews a good kid, but everyone knows nice guys finish last. Time to bring in big brother to stir the pot. Plus, I need to hear David call Bo- Pawh at least once a day. What’s Dorian up to? What’s her agenda witht he new City Center? What are her plans for Charlie? Kelly needs a life. Preferably in London. The Starr-Cole infighting won’t be wrapped up at prom. Daddy dearest will continue to come between them. I’ve been liking Starr alot lately. Lets see more fired up Starr and less, teen mom living the fantasy Starr. Blair and Tea. I didn’t think anything could make me enjoy Tea scenes. Partnering her with Blair changed my mind. I still don’t like her the rest of the time but Love Tea and Blair together. I’m no longer sure what I want for Natalie except more screentime. I’d be ok with it being with John or Brody or both, or neither. Loved her scenes with Kevin. And Vicki. Bring Kevin back to Llanview Where the hell is Clint? He needs to go get his girl back. Kimberly Buchanan (as protrayed by AS) needs to be on my screen. They were bright and funny together, even if the storyline was cliched. Leave Rex and Gigi in Arizona or wherever they are. I have no clue why these two are even on my screen. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz Log in to Reply ladyofthelake May 12, 2010 Uh, this isn’t for me. I mean I’m to old for highschool musical and this is kinda like that, to me anyway. Or maybe they were trying to make it like Nine, ugh. If I wanna watch a musical, I’ll watch the great ones from the 30’s & 40’s, not this. I’m being hard on it, but really how is this supposed to help in the ratings? I’d balk if they did a musical episode on any soap, period. If they were gonna do a gangster opera on GH or anything like that on the other soaps I’d skip it for sure. Log in to Reply Desertrose May 12, 2010 If I want the Disney Channel I know the number to flip to. Way to ruin a great soap OLTL writers/producers/idiots in charge. Thanks a whole lot. Don’t like these stories a’tall! Log in to Reply Nat Guy May 12, 2010 Like I said before, the first musical was lame. I think that was because it was just about Starr & Cole reuniting and the original music sucked. But this year with the use of cover songs and more storylines coming to a climax it could be a really good show. I’m eager to see how it turns out. Log in to Reply Jamey Giddens May 12, 2010 I commend OLTL 150 percent for embarking on this. Am I still pissed about the last few weeks of the show, and losing Kish, Rachel and Sky? Hell-to-the-yes, but I am willing to put all of that aside to give them props for trying something fresh and timely. Glee is the hottest show in primetime, Ron is the only writer in daytime I would trust to go there. I shudder to think of a musical penned by Hogan Sheffer and Maria Bell. I am excited! Log in to Reply kitty May 12, 2010 Actually, ending the Kish story as it was told was a smart move. It was nothing more than Ron preaching at middle america about what they will be forced to accept. I guess in the end middle america won and BC is quite full of himself these days. Nice way to pi$$ on the genre that accepted you. Log in to Reply DaytimeFan0001 May 12, 2010 I am not a consistent viewer of OLTL, but I want to check this out. If anything else, I have an appreciation for all the hard work that goes into an episode like this. Plus, my girl Roxie is in it, so I have to see what she does! Nice way to pi$$ on the genre that accepted you. If you weren’t a bigot, you wouldn’t make such a ridiculous statement. Even if you weren’t a fan of KISH, from a narrative standpoint, the way the storyline ended was abrupt and not a proper wrap up. Anytime characters just disappear from screen, without a sendoff and are referred to as in town, but not seen on screen = LAZY A$$ writing and a big FU TO THE FANS. In this case 300, 000 fans said FU right back the week after. As A KISH fan, I will admit I stopped actively watching when I heard about their firing. . I have casually watched while flipping through channels, BUT the show is a MESS. And THAT is what you in MIDDLE America deserve if you can’t stomach watching a Show representative of the world the REST OF US live in….DIVERSITY AND ALL> Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 May 12, 2010 Kitty, Are you trying to justify homophobia and gay bashing?? I certainly hope not, because the last thing this country needs is more bigotry and hatred. And Ron Carlivati is a GAY man, so he is simply writing what he knows. That’s what they say: Write what you know. And he did a damn good job writing what he knew, from what I saw!!! We are all entitled to either hate or love the "Kish" storyline, but trying to get people to abandon their IGNORANT beliefs surrounding gay relationships and the rights that gay people should be given in this country is a battle that we should ALL be fighting, soap opera by soap opera and network by network. ABC deserves every bit of criticism that they are getting for backing down from this challenge, as opposed to trying to do the right thing. How does pushing the gays back into the proverbial closet and not showing them on OLTL because of fear help the genre or OLTL??? Just like segregation was supposedly left behind in the 1960s, homophobia needs to be left behind in this decade, never to be forced down people’s throats ever again!!!! P.S– If certain people on this website don’t like gays or lesbians, that’s fine, but please feel free to keep your antiquated and archaic beliefs in the closet where they belong!!! I’d be VERY appreciative, and I am sure many other people on here would be also!!! Log in to Reply TmontyB May 12, 2010 All the usual madness aside, I will be watching. The promo looks interesting, so I definitely want to see what they are going to do. Sure Glee is all the rage as was High School Musical a couple of years ago and if I wanted to watch that…..I’d watch that and not a second rate copy which is what this will be. I don’t mind the occasional weird episode on my soaps but this just looks lame. Anyone else annoyed with the X in Star X’d lovers? that is sooo 7 years ago. Log in to Reply Bourgeois Nerd May 12, 2010 I haven’t been watching OLTL lately, but if you say it’s going to be awesome, Jillian, I trust you. I don’t care much about most of the storylines, but just seeing everyone break into song should be good for some laughs, if nothing else. If it turns into a trainwreck, though, I’m blaming you, Jillian, for getting my hopes up! Log in to Reply Delia Diva May 13, 2010 I’m so NOT looking forward to the musical. Log in to Reply Jillian Bowe May 13, 2010 Bourgeois Nerd, I stand by my assessment of what I saw. Now if YOU don’t like it you can’t blame this chicka for it! LOL. Star and her gang need to dance on out of Lianview for all I care!! Just don’t put that lame kiddy stuff on the soaps for days!! OLTL is already at 1.7 in the ratings and now with this garbage it could get a whole lot worse. Hey, to the TPTB at OLTL, how about you just stick to getting some good stories first!!! Leave the singing and dancing to broadway or Glee!! Log in to Reply syworld82 May 13, 2010 Ive given up on OLTL .. like a previous user.. if im flipping thru channels and i happen on OLTL or if others are watching it ill say whats going on in the mess of Llanview… but otherwise.. when KISH left SO DID I… only 1 thing could bring me back… Tess Buchanan Log in to Reply Bourgeois Nerd May 13, 2010
Bourgeois Nerd, I stand by my assessment of what I saw. Its not 3 months or 6 months of that boring drivel we had to watch of Kish. Get over there firing. They weren’t anything special! Scott Evans cannot act. Some of these so called teens you cry about especially Kristen Aldersen can act circles around Scott Evans. This is not just a teen musical. Alot of the adults will be involved and singing too. At least most of these stories that have dragged on will come to an end. And I am sure some of you will be excited to see Brody sing. LOL Kitty if this show is so bad stop watching. You seem to hate every storyline. Knowing you I guess you would prefer to watch Charlie and Vicki go on a picnic. zzzzzz What story do you like? God I have enjoyed OLTL lately other than Jessica and the Rex/Gigi sl. Its been a hell of alot better than AMC of late. Log in to Reply TV Gord May 13, 2010 You know, before the internet, we always thought it was old folks who reacted badly to change or anything different. Now we know who it really is: as Lauren Graham coined them, it’s "crazy internet people"! I’m not going to say something sucks before I’ve seen it. That’s just…irrational. I hate Glee and I’ve had no use for High School Musical, but I LOVE OLTL, so I will try watching with an open mind. BTW, it would be nice to see Kathy Brier/Marcie McBain make a cameo appearance. Log in to Reply Courtney fan4life May 13, 2010 Um Y2Jin99 they can complain if the want! And I am one of the many not watching this crap. I watch glee cause they have talent..except the guy who plays Finn and watch for Puckleberry. OLTL kids TRYING to sing is not my cup of tea. Im tuning out. I’ll watch my girl Destiny scenes on youtube and might I add dam good for Matthew after turning down Destiny. I’m gonna laugh when DanYELLA gives him the oh i just like you as a friend. Log in to Reply TV Gord May 13, 2010 In my opinion, if the folks on Glee had real talent, they would sing live and not lip-synch to pre-recorded tracks of their voices. I think it should be done like a broadway show. The perfectly-produced antiseptic versions of golden oldies is like nails on a blackboard to me. Log in to Reply Y2Jin99 May 13, 2010 Courtney Fan 4 life I wouldn’t expect anything less from a Den-sity fan. Stranger Danger! what a great actress. NOT Log in to Reply lilyredd May 13, 2010 Thank you for the spoilers. I wish I could share in your excitement. I suppose if this show was balanced in story for ALL characters, I may not be as annoyed with the prospect of the constant barage of teens, Messica, and Todd. There, sadly, appears no end in sight of these uninteresting teens in this new direction of OLTL’s. I think it is great the show wants to take advantage of the success of Glee and bring in viewers, problem is this will not mask the real problem, for me, and that is the lack of compelling stories on every level. We have Starr choosing between her violent thug dad and her violent thug boyfriend. Grow a pair and walk away girl! We have Tea failing to fight as hard for a cure as she did freeing the rapist after he re-raped Marty. We have dim-witted and heartless Langston screwing an equally heartless bore in Ford while the boy who gave up everything looks a dull idiot. We have the unfortunate Jessica and all the garbage that follows in her wake. What stands out for me is what we do not have and that is love, romance, mystery, wit, heart –and most importantly, we have no Dorian and Viki. Enough. These characters and actresses are the Meryl Streeps and Helen Mirrens of this show, the Evita and Elizabeth 1 of this show. You do not stick them in the corner to lesser characters and actors! I get that others are excited and want them to enjoy this show. I do not mean to speak for others, but I want to enjoy this show I have watched since 1980, and we post our displeasure in hopes that some of these real complaints and issues would be rectified. Be careful in telling people not to watch –enough people appear to have taken that advice to heart. Log in to Reply bottomchef May 13, 2010 Now they’re ripping off glee and HSM. Typical Carlivati. he appropriates other products and makes his own crappy version. Log in to Reply josser May 13, 2010 HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This looks AMAZING! I’m so excited to see this musical! Tika is singing up a storm! Thank you Frank and Ron! I really appreciate the creativity and passion you invest into OLTL.! I just love the energy of the add. OLTL is awesome! Log in to Reply ROFO May 13, 2010 Hey, I’m 58 years old and I am MUCH looking forward to this! I thoroughly enjoyed the last prom musical that they did several years ago! This is a nice change of pace from the usual fodder and beats the heck out of the musical guest stars who pop in now and then. I’d much rather see the regulars strut their musical stuff! Keep it coming! Log in to Reply sunnydays25 May 13, 2010 I’m not as excited as Jullian (lol), but I am willing to give the 3 day event a chance. I don’t tape OLTL anymore, but I will watch with my 16 yr old (who, by the way, started watching for Kish, but is sticking it out for Bo/Nora and Charlie/Viki!) occasionally. I did not like the musical 2 years ago AT ALL, but the inclusion of Layla, Roxy, Brody and Blair should make it much more bearable than dealing with DanYELLa and Skankstan only. alstonboy4315 and wjhboy75…thanks for such thoughtful posts…ITA! Log in to Reply ABCJunky73 May 13, 2010 I’m looking forward to it! Yes the show has took a down turn with the firings that went on, but OLTL has always been great when doing comical shows or musicals. My top three are as followed with explanation for those who never seen these episodes (and you can find these on YouTube): 3. The Daisy Awards- Back when Vicki’s daughter Megan was alive, she was a actress on a fictional soap called "Fraternity Row" and OLTL did their version of the Daytime Emmys. 2. Women in Prison- I remember this one because you had Lindsey, Roxy, Blair, Evangeline and Marcie all in colorful prison garb singing in the slammer. 1. The Character Switcheroo Episode- This one was my all-time favorite. Rae had the weirdest dream were all the characters switched places. Imagine Nora as Lindsey, Lindsey as Nora, Bo as RJ and RJ as Bo, Starr as a nun from St. Ann’s and the funnest one was Vicki as Todd and Todd (played by Roger Howarth in dress and wig) as Vicki! OLTL has always done a great job with giving us a laugh or making us sing-a-long. Yes, some of us might be out of high school and it might seem to alot as just another HSM ripoff, but at least OLTL goes all out. Who knows, maybe a stage light will fall on Jessica and bring her back to the present time. Log in to Reply dmtennis1 May 13, 2010 This story line is too pathetic. But obviously the writers wish they could return to their youth, since you have such a talented actress in Bree Williams playing a moronic 17 year old. Let the actress play Jessica as a somewhat stable adult for a change, she really is good. As for this idiotic musical, come on, what High School would put this on anyway?!? OLTL, please get back on track. Stop recycling old stories and get to some good ones that you used to write. Log in to Reply dmtennis1 May 13, 2010 This story line is too pathetic. Log in to Reply siomonstuart2003 May 15, 2010 Don’t talk about my girl, Destiny, Y2jin99, she needs a little help in the acting department, but she can become a strong actress someday and I like her a lot.
