Was Maria Arena Bell Going To Bring Victoria Rowell Back To Y&R?

Victoria Rowell had the Twitter world on fire this afternoon with behind-the-scenes drama from The Young and the Restless. According to the actress, who vacated the wildly popular role of Drucilla Winters three years ago, a liason from Y&R has been in contact with Rowell recently to discuss bringing her back to the sudser. Read Rowell's tweets after the jump.

So, for the past 3 days there's been an appointed liaison between Maria Bell and myself, contacting me via text, at my Atlanta home, &in LA.

I found it odd first of all, that I was being approached as a respected & tenured actor, with theatrical representation in this way.

I was insulted to learn that Maria Arena Bell was "trying" to bring me back. Phooey! After everything I've given and been through on Y&R...

The word TRY shouldn't even be in the mix. A respectful business call would have been appropriate. And so you see, EVEN on a business level.

there is a demonstration of disrespect. I know for a fact Maria made it possible for Eric Braeden's return so how hard did she TRY for him?

I have this to say: It's all contingent upon who is perceived as important, WHO Maria is willing to take lumps 4 & WHOSE bluffs she'll call.

I stand by the integrity of my work and know my value. If anyone would like to discuss business please contact my attorney, Chuck Hurewitz.

Rowell's previous tweets about the negative experiences she allegedly faced at Y&R have been making the news for the past few weeks, from The Wall Street Journal to the popular urban blog YBF Among the allegations Rowell made, which caught the eye of the mainstream media, was an item about Y&R leading lady Melody Thomas Scott reportedly running around the set wearing a clown-colored, afro wig to mock Rowell's then-ethnic hairdo.

Here is my two cents:

IF MTS's afro antics are indeed true, then shame on her!  That is low brow, tacky, and yes, most definitely has racist undertones.  There is no denying that Victoria Rowell is a phenomenal actress.  The Winters storylines of the 90s drew me in as a wee six year old, and I've been hopelessly hooked ever since.  Her witty improvisations, strength, and colorful personality made Dru what she was.  Under the current regime, I, like Nyne, wonder if returning would be in her best interest.  Can we trust the show to explain her "death" in a plausible, interesting way?  Will the character be subject to shelving and unflattering s/l's because of what goes down behind the scenes?  How will cast mates react?

Now, Lord knows I lub me some Dru, and I think VR is a very intelligent lady, but she has got to tone it way down, lest she further alienate herself.  She's been in the game too long, so she would know politics and popularity better than anyone.  Boo, safety pin that shish!  From my understanding, she LEFT.  I've left a job for similar reasons, but with no expectation of being asked back because that was MY big girl decision. I decided that the situation was on my list of non-negotiables and that the negativity overruled any desire to stay there another day.  So you walk away, resolved that you wouldn't go back if your mama asked you to because it was so piss poor.

What you don't want to do is create an atmosphere so rife with hostility that you can't come back.  She's putting too much of her professional business out on a large social platfom - a no no.  Stop trying to make this corporation bend to your will, because even if you are all kinds of talented, the real world rarely ever gives you the recognition or respect you think you deserve.  No way would a network give one person the upper hand to influence their decisions by putting out bad press.  If she goes back to Y&R, given everything she's said about the writing and staff, what would that in turn say about her?  Do you want to be associated with that kind of place.  Just sayin...

Nekeeta, agree with you comments, but I glad that Victoria Rowell is speaking out about the injustice that is going on behind the scenes when she was at Y&R. Sometimes you have to speak out and raise your voice about shady doings in the workplaces when AA is the majority viewer audiences of soaps in the first place.

Shame on Maria Arena Bell for having her peep text as a way of handling a negotiation.

Shame on Melody Thomas Scott for the wig incident if it's true.

Shame on Victoria Rowell for continuing to slam her former employer in the press and expecting to be taken back.

Soap operas are very conservative. IT was JAmes Reynolds who said they are still writing soaps for white grandmothers.

Anyone watching soaps knows that minorities (racial and sexual) are treated like bastard stepchildren, and if the ratings go down, they are blamed despite evidence to the contrary. Yet research showed that the loss of the African-American storylines on YR was the main cause of their ratings drop. Nothing was done to regain viewers.

Victoria Rowell is not the first person from the show to go after her costars and producers in fiction. Eileen Davidson did it in her mysteries.

And even if only 20% of what Rowell says is true, that's still an unacceptable work environment and a racist way of dealing with AA performers--all of whom have spoken out on the issue. OF course, St. John was threatened with loss of his job so she clammed up.

And even if Rowell was a nightmare to deal with, she never got into a fist fight with her costar.

Drucilla is NEEDED on Y&R, played by Victoria Rowell. She is as important as Katherine, Jill, Victor, and Nikki. She's an important part of the show's history, and let's face it, Lilywhite doesn't measure up. She is no "young Drucilla".

Dru has been gone for almost 4 years, the show does not need her, the cast does not need her baggage and neither does the crew! matter of fact her last day the crew had a party to celebrate!

I don't need Lily to be a young Drucilla, Drucilla is the past, Lily is an educated woman, unlike her mother. Lily is a woman of color for the now, yes the actress is not 100% African, but show me a African American that is 100% African or African American!

personally I am not 100% caucasion, when does my Italian/Spanish/French/German/Indian/Black Dutch/over 50/female actors get our chance?

The show needs Victoria's Drucilla more than it needs half the current cast on this show, including Drucilla's WHITE daughter Lily!

well I guess since VR has ALOT of experience having a Lily WHITE daughter, I don't understand what all the moaning and groaning is about!

Up until the last several months of Victoria's time on Y&R I enjoyed her character. As a 60 yr. old African-American woman, I know discrimination/racism all too well. That being said, it's time for Victoria Rowell to move on. Let Y&R go and move on with her life. Why is she giving those that wronged her so much power? Her obvious anger is just wasted energy and in the end will accomplish nothing. None of us will ever know the whole truth because we're all speculating (me, included) that what we've read is true. I wish Victoria much success in whatever she decides to do.

We African-Americans know what it feels like to have the mere fact of our blackness be regarded as a crime or something to be ashamed of. This makes us more sensitive to racial discrimination. There are or may be times when what we perceive as acts of racial insult were just merely generic insults or not intended to be insulting.

Obviously, Victoria Rowell feels insulted. It’s next to impossible to say if she feels this way because she’s hyper-sensitive, or if she really was insulted but not because of her race, or if there are a bunch of bigots with smiling faces working at Y & R. What I think is best is that she look for more constructive things to do with her anger.

For quite sometime I have thought that Victoria has more attitude than talent, and things like this just prove it. Victoria was "insulted" and "disrespected" by the fact that an appointed liaison sent her a text to see if she would be interested in coming back. I am sure that the whole deal would not have been sealed through text and that she would have received a call from Y&R. She acts as if Y&R is being unprofessional, yet she spills all of this to the press? It is beond me why anyone at Y&R (cast, writer, producers, etc.) would want this sour bitch back? Please leave Victoria alone and let her keep her ass in Atlanta.

Why is it so hard to believe that a go-between was used to talk with VR? Isn't that the same thing they did to EB during his contract negotiations? Didn't EB respond the same way by taking it public? As far as I am concerned, their stories match.

Does racism exist? Yup. In Hollywood...HELLS YEAH! However, as in all things, it takes a strong person to confront it head on. That person usually becomes the ire of all involved and have to take a lot of crap. So I commend VR for being that person. It is obvious that Y&R don't care about some of their AA viewers that they lost with VR and SM, because they know how to bring them back and choose not to do it. Oh well. AA viewers now have the power to try other alternatives. Watch better websoaps, or other shows that focus more on diversity. The power of the dollar is what drives them, when they care. i really don't think they care. Example...Tyler Perry has shown that he can make a movie on the cheap, and get a whole lot of viewers..for FULL PROFIT!! This would be a godsend for most movie makes, but they still avoid him like the plague..and now he doesn't need them. They just don't care...but the message still needs to be put out there.

Thank you VR for being the messenger.

What is the big deal of telling behind the scenes gossip, DC and Nelson does it with the "Blind Items" and we love to guess who it what, but why when VR speaks her mind, it is always wrong. I loving the juicy tales of "Y&R", behind the scenes. Better than the show.

Comparing Victoria Rowell to Brenda Dickson is both silly and inaccurate. Victoria has had a VERY active career outside of Y&R!! She spent many years on "Diagnosis Murder," and has appeared in MANY film projects such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "Eve's Bayou"!! Still scratching my head trying to figure out what BRENDA has done aside from Y&R!! And while Brenda was entertaining, her talents as an actress were SEVERELY limited---both dramatically and comedically. Jess Walton taking over that role was one of the biggest miracles of the 1980s for Y&R!!! Dickson was almost a walking caricature toward the end of her run. And while I do find her to be charming and entertaining, obviously mainstream Hollywood doesn't get the punchline--because she hasn't had a steady acting gig on anything recognizable in over 23 years.

Vicki's body of work in television, film and as a best-selling author speaks for itself.

Feel free to dislike Vicki at will, but she is far from a HAS-BEEN!!

P.S---How many soap opera stars can boast having Samuel Jackson be a part of their wedding party, or her LONG list of celebrity friends?? If she weren't concentrating on her literary career, I am sure she could find work on primetime and film like THAT......(snaps fingers!!)

And I do think it's sad that Brenda hasn't worked in 23 years, despite my disparaging remarks about her. She's certainly not a HIDEOUS actress, and I hope she gets hired back on Y&R or another soap, although her getting hired back on Y&R seems to be unlikely since she basically DRAGGED William Bell Sr.'s name through the mud back in the 80s. Good luck to her, though!!!

Victoria loves the show and wants it to be around for years to come, but with the way MAB and Co. is driving it into the ground with the stunt casting and bad plots, will Y&R be around for another five years?

I agree that stigmatizing people based on their skin tone or their "level of ghettoness" is a losing game. However, what's wrong with hiring a few African American writers, makeup artists or hairstylists?? Why does daytime refuse to embrace people of color both IN FRONT of and BEHIND the cameras?? That was Victoria's MAIN gripe, and I totally agree with it. I think that SOMEONE needs to have the courage to speak out against that!! When people start questioning these things, it makes people uncomfortable!! But what's the alternative????? At this rate, there will be practically NO AA, Asian or Hispanic people behind the scenes or in front of the scenes in the next three years!!!

EET--

Yeah, will the person who wrote that post PLEASE stand up?? LOL!!!!

However, if Jamey DID ghost-write Vicki's book, why would he admit it??? Isn't that why they call them GHOST writers??? And I loved the book, regardless of WHO wrote it!!!!

I agree there needs to be more diversity. But VR uses the term "diversity" as if it only applies to AAs. What about LGBT, disabled, Native American, Mentally Ill...

Everyone should be represented. Unfortunately, we forget that the majority of the US remains white people who are only getting older. This is Y&R's audience. Jamey even commented recently on a podcast that they need to remember who their audience is...these very same people. But the flip side of that is that they don't want to see a whole lot of "diversity."

VR is too all or nothing for me. She throws the baby out with the bath water. Why doesn't she start a majority black soap? Because it would fail. The audience is present but not big enough to support a show alone. We need to be heard and represented, but not at the expense of some beloved characters and actors.

Equality---

I respect your views, and I certainly don't agree with EVERYTHING that Vicki says and does.

I wish that she would write/produce her own TV show, whether it be primetime, daytime or webtime!!! You are right, another soap opera probably WOULD fail. But Vicki has proven that she has the talent and skill to write intriguing characters and tell intriguing stories, so I hope she keeps building her literary/media empire!!! I am sure that any show she spearheads in the future will be.............(points index finger out and wags it, while doing my best Jay Alexander impression!!!)------"FIIIEEEERCCEE"!!!!!!!!!

Let's see if my entire family had created a show and one of its former co-stars called us racists and everything else, I'd be in a REAL hurry to take back said co-star.

VR is a very talented actress and Dru is a great character. However, even though Y & R is struggling, to put it mildly, right now creatively, the fact is that they don't need her. They are still #1 in the ratings by a huge margin.

She needs to realize that she may never had gotten a role on a CBS primetime show (Diagnosis Murder) or anything else without the Bells and Y & R.

I am so sick of her whining on Twitter and everywhere else about Y & R. If it was so miserable, then why are you so desperate to go back? She's made her bed and now she has to lie in it.

She is still talking about the injustice of the Winters family and the show is number one because of AA viewers, lets talk about that. But the show is still a mess and MAB and Co are dismantling it with the bad writing. I love VR and want her back, but she is still fighting for equal treatment for blacks on the Y&R.

Why go back to a show that made the biggest mistake in the world of letting you go? Don't they say that living well is the best revenge? Why are you worried about the soap that let you go in the first place?

I'm with Nyne on this one.

Why, Victoria?

It's clear they're NEVER going to treat her the way she THINKS she should be treated, so why does she keep harping on this?

MOVE ON!

I'm sick of hearing about this. I used to like her and the character of Dru, but she has beaten this dead horse so badly, I don't even want to HEAR about her anymore.

Wow, this situation is unfortunate! And sadly, we, the fans, are the one's who pay the price for the lack of professionalism among these actors/writers/producers.

Victoria Rowell is a phenomenal actress and the character of Drucilla is desperately needed on Y&R.
