General Hospital's Leslie Charleson Placed On Recurring

Another Quatermaine gets sent to the back of the bus. ABC Soaps In Depth is reporting General Hospital star Leslie Charleson (Monica) is off contract and on recurring status. This news should not be a shocker to some GH viewers as Charleson has been seen less and less on the canvas.

I am kinda shocked she hasn't been on recurring all this time.

Not for anything-- daytime soaps are really struggling-- they are at all time low in ratings and many are running over budget. It makes total business sense to place those actors who have not had front burner storylines on recurring. Granted if/when there is a need to use the actor more- at that point there could come the need to change their status to contract player-- but if the person is backburner for a long period of time he/she should be on recurring.

GH is the only ABC Soap That Doesn't Use Its Vets

I would be interested to know if they came to her and gave her an option of a pay-cut before shooting her down to recurring?

I just don't get GH I get a ton of newbies and pets from their other cancelled shows TIIC brings in to overide the veterans of this show.

When all I ever wanted is Qs involved ...they are steady adding more characters yet GH does not write "for the vets" and those who are original to the show.

They haven't figured out that is a big problem with this show for many viewers...The fabric is gone, the rich tapestry, history of the show is not used ... this is FronsTV One tree hill, the OC..

and I know what happened to those..he came on board and destroyed a 48 year old show..with favoritism and sloppy storytelling by his BFF Guza...its a shame...

I'm no longer a loyal viewer but I wish Leslie well I knew it was only a matter of time...he's systematically destroyed the Qs and (all the families for the most part) replaced them with the Corinthos clan

Whether she is a good actress or not (which I happen to think Leslie has always been an excellent actress even the garbage they give her) not only that I read years ago (don't know if its true) this is the actress that singlehandedly got GH off the cancellation block with "her storyline" and the triangle of Alan, Rick, Jeff and all that kept them going for years...

then they turn around and kick them in the ass...if it wasn't for this woman there would be no GH. They were scheduled to be cancelled and literally rose to #1 over night.

This show disrespect their vets at every turn...all she needs is to be involved in the storytelling they won't write for her. GH has put all their vets to pasture.

PS they offered Stuart Damon recurring and he didn't take it Ron Hale is out as Mike supposedly (his choice to retire) so I wouldn't be surprised if they offerred her recurring or the exit door. I'm so glad I'm out of GH can't stand the politics and favoritism re: FronsTv especially GH..

You know what guys, she had a great run. Thirty-three years on the show is something for her to be proud of. But with the Quartermaine clan decimated, there isn't much more they can do with her.

I'm sure if there had been an internet back in '77, everyone would have been complaining about how the Quartermaines were pushing aside characters like Steve, Audrey, Jessie, etc. That's just the way soaps go.

I only watch GH off and on, but I love Monica as do my parents who watched as early as the '70's. I think it would be great to see Leslie Charleston on another show and I hope GH regrets their decision.

I watched GH back then and that is not true. Steve, Audrey, & Jessie were all slowly fading off when the Q's came on. They were like family to the Quartermaines and shared lots of scenes with them. Every holiday, party, wedding, funeral, you name it and Steve, Audrey, & Jessie were with the Quartermaines. Monica & Audrey remained close until Rachel Ames left the show. The Q's gave those 3 an extended family that they never really had.

Why doesn't the show just rename itself Sonny? Get rid of the General Hospital characters and just be about the mob.
Oh that's because the mob on general hospital sux. This show's writers worship a gangster daily. They have surounded him with a bevy of women (even though he's in a gay relationship with Jason). Now the love of his life Vanessa Marcel(uh maybe Carly should have a say in this one) has come back. It should have drawn oh about 300000 viewers but oh yeah the ratings went down. Glad ABC spent that money bringing her back. And why does this "mob" story that is about as realistic as cinderella, continue? Even though ratings plummet yearly? Same reason all the soaps numbers continue to fall..... because the networks have lost touch with their viewers.
Sorry that yet another long and outstanding career in daytime is coming to an end..... well we gotta pay for this one actress who probably won't stay around anyway.

Plastic surgery and soaps is a vicious cycle. With people like Brian Frons in charge of the genre, who say things like (paraphrasing) "It's surprising people actually like Marcy, given how Kathy Brier looks" of course the actors are going to feel pressure to get nipped and tucked. I heard of one former NBC soap actress who was told by the brass if she "freshened up" she would work more. That poor woman now looks unrecognizable. If the brass at these shows weren't so shallow, then actors wouldn't feel the need to ruin their faces with plastic surgery. Personally, I think Leslie has a great surgeon, much better than some of her peers. It's sad, but I was told by a very reliable source, that Jacklyn Zeman is played so infrequently because of her surgeries.

Thanks to most everyone for not knocking my post about the plastic surgery. I'm sorry, but when I think of LC, I just
see the awful plastic surgery. One reason for that, is because she is on so infrequently. I do now remember (back when) LC was front and center and did some fine acting and yes, was up for several Emmy's. Thanks for the the pleasantly mentioned reminders.

As far as you, "angrierblackerman", whatever. You can call me a douche/douchess, that's fine. Not a big deal.
I guess I just don't get that worked up over someone else's opinion and choose to call people names.
Not trying to be even the slightest bit nasty here. If you and others choose to do that, that's fine, I know I just don't.

One thing that has always been nice about this site is when someone mis-speaks or has a thought that others don't necessarily agree with, the comments back are still mostly
cordial, which is great.

I'm going to be honest and say that without the title of the post and because I tune into GH so infrequently these days, I would not have recognized the photo as being of Leslie.

my personal feelings are that if you can tell a person has had plastic surgery, it is bad plastic surgery. Our eyes are trained to pick up things that just aren't right. The shape of someones nose, a chin implant, eye lids that don't contour the eye socket, laughlines in inapropriate places, teeth that are much bigger than they ought to be, lips that are impossibly large, foreheads that have no lines, boobs that defy gravity, a neck on a 50 year old that is stretched taut like an 18 y/o. These things aren't normal and seem wrong to our eyes. Plastic surgery should be used to correct serious flaws not to try to make someones face a science fiction project.
There is one actress on a CBS soap( and it is easy to figure out who I am speaking of) who left her show for a few years. When she left, she was arguably the most beautiful actress on daytime. While she was gone a surgeon got ahold of that beautiful face and distorted and bleached, and plumped and shifted until she looks like Joan Rivers. Why? I could cry trying to figure out why someone would do that. If a persons face is ravaged by age and sun and poor lifestyle choices ( Jeanne Cooper comes to mind), and you are on tv, then a face lift and some skin modification might make some sense. To set things right again. But to just saw and hack at ones face to try to "look" younger is a prime example of self hatred.

In the past, you used to hear about contract clauses which stated that actors could not make significant changes in their appearance that might affect the integrity or believability of the characters they played. I'm guessing that this does not apply to plastic surgery "enhancements".

You know i find it extremely sad. Leslie Charleson has been on GENERAL HOSPITAL for over 33 years. The woman has seniority over every cast member on that show, and they don't even give her screen time.. not to mention commemorate her for the fine work she's done for the past years. Even though this movie will not be met well by fans, her status with the show stays. She has been drop to recurring, but it's going to be the same amount of airtime she's been having- almost nothing will change. Its sad that the once bickering Quartermaine family.. is now nothing more than a distant memory.

This makes me sad on many levels. It especially makes no sense with Brenda coming back. Brenda was an honorary Quartermaine. It's like their taking everyone's roots away.

Monica was never my favorite character, but I love her so much in comparison to the mob that we see today.

There was so much potential with her as a character (especially with her being Jason's mom).

Love you Leslie! I hope we still get to see you on the show at least as often as we do now.

Sad news, GH has become a total loss. I remember when Monica was pushed down the stairs when she was pregnant, now that was a storyline. Who cares about the Mob?
