If some of you are wondering why this column is so infrequent, it's because some week's it's just too doggone depressing to write. According to Soap Opera Network's Nielsen ratings, it was a butt ugly whore of a week for most of the daytime sudsers on the dial.

From the looks of things, the Bell soaps were the hardest hit. CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless lost most of the new total viewers who had helped the show spike the previous ratings cycle—254,000 to be exact. However, Y&R was up 78,000 total viewers year-to-date the week of Aug. 23-27. The Maria Arena Bell and Paul Rauch-produced sudser fell one-tenth of a ratings point in households and among the coveted women 18-49 demo.

Y&R's baby sister, The Bold and the Beautiful, had an even worse week. B&B lost 277,000 total viewers over the previous week and was down 121,000 year-to-date.  B&B fell a crucial two-tenths of a point in households and one-tenth of a point among women 18-49, tying its lowest rating ever in that demo. B&B was just one-tenth of a point ahead of cancelled sudser As The World Turns in the demographic Madison Avenue cares the most about during the daypart. Something's gotta give and fast!

Speaking of World Turns, the P&G sudser lost 124,000 total viewers from the previous week. World Turns did manage to hold steady in households—tied with ABC Daytime's All My Children and One Life to Live—and among women 18-49. It should be noted, ATWT had more total viewers the week of Aug. 23-27 than AMC or OLTL.

The most depressing news of the week is that General Hospital, now knee-deep in Brenda's (Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo) return, is still shedding viewers. Let's hope finally putting Brenda back in Sonny's (Maurice Benard) orbit will cause a boost. GH lost 107,000 total viewers over the previous week, though it was up from this time last year by 115,000 total viewers.  GH went down a tenth of a point in households, yet held steady among women 18-49.

The aforementioned AMC dropped 57,000 total viewers over the previous week, but was up year-to-date 118,000 total viewers. AMC went down one-tenth of a point in households, tying its lowest rating ever in that demo. AMC held tight among women 18-49.

Agnes Nixon's other creation, One Life to Live, was the only sudser to gain total viewers the week of Aug. 23-27, going up 48,000 total viewers. OLTL was down 15,000 year-to-date. OLTL didn't budge in households and was tied with ATWT and AMC in last place. The good news for Llanview lovers is that Frank and Ron's sudser also held steady among women 18-49, besting B&B, AMC and ATWT.

Over at NBC there was more proof that the clock has struck 12 and Cinder-Dena has turned Days of Our Lives back into a pumpkin. DAYS dipped 50,000 total viewers and was down a whopping 286,000 total viewers year-to-date. Just a few months back DAYS was up year-to-date every single week by huge numbers. WTF is going on? Will Ken Corday finally admit Dena Higley is a hack and beg Thom Racina and Sally Sussman Morina to come in and help Gary Tomlin fix this soap opera, and while he's at it, crawl across broken glass to beg Deidre Hall to come back? One can hope. DAYS tied it's all-time low rating in households for the eighth straight week, however it held steady among women 18-49.
