This Week in Daytime: Flaxen Haired Fools

This Week in Daytime,

I teared up at As the World Turns’ tribute to Nancy Hughes (Helen Wagner). The episode contained so many wonderful flashbacks. I was in the midst of patting myself on the back for not letting it get to me when they began Nancy’s Thanksgiving prayer and I knew I was a goner. Of course, that touching scene was immediately followed by Katie’s (Terri Colombino) flashbacks of Nancy. I know each ATWT fan has their own fond memories, but there are three reasons I fell in love with ATWT and Oakdale. 1) I discovered ATWT because it was where my beloved Another World characters ended up. 2) I couldn’t get enough of Jack (Michael Park) and Carly’s (Maura West) on again/off again relationship 3). Katie and Simon’s (Paul Leyden) romance–nurtured by Nancy–hooked me. Share your favorite Nancy Hughes moments in the comments. We miss you Helen Wagner.

I loved GH's Brook Lynn (Adrianne Leon) coming clean to Lulu (Julie Marie Berman) about Carly’s (Laura Wright) plot to get back at her and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna). GH was smart to bring Leon back to Port Charles and, if they are really smart, they’ll keep her around for a long time. However, Lulu is a flaxen-haired fool if she believes Carly’s lies.

I lamented ABC’s What If webisodes. They should have been called What Could Have Been. The Todd (Trevor St. John) and Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) webisode was the only one I truly enjoyed. However, I will readily admit that after watching Michael Easton and Kelly Monaco’s What If episode, I wished the two actors had ended up on the same soap after Port Charles. I’m not worried, considering they are both on ABC soaps, there is always the possibility One Life to Live’s McBain might one day cross over to General Hospital to take down the Port Charles mob and—at that point—I fully anticipate Caleb and Livvie 2.0.

I laughed at The Bold and the Beautiful’s Liam (Scott Clifton) and Bill (Don Diamont) coming to terms with the discovery they are father and son. Both actors did a bang up job. When Liam hauled off and punched Bill only to watch his father’s expression turn to steel and hear him say he might just make a Spencer yet, I was in heaven at the pure soapy goodness of it all. What made those scenes all the more satisfying was seeing these two talented actors in an excellent story after being let go by their previous shows. Of all the storylines on soaps this week, this was my favorite.

I shouted “Oh Hell No!” at my TV while watching Days of our Lives. I am going to have to find Jamey’s shrine to James E. Reilly and get down on my knees to pray, because if DAYS is even considering pairing Dr. Hairy Chest (Shawn Christian) and Nicole (Arianne Zucker), we have a problem. Reilly needs to come back to haunt the writer's room until this nonsense has been done away with.

I smiled at the return of John Dixon (Larry Byrggman) to ATWT. It just seems so right to have him back.

I sighed with relief when OLTL's Blair (Kassie DePaiva) identified Elijah’s (Matt Walton) charred body. Yes I know it was burned beyond recognition, so there is always the possibility he’ll come back, but for all our sakes, let this story be over and done with!

I enjoyed All My Children’s beautiful actors, beautiful clothes and beautiful sets in wonderfully beautiful HD, but other than beauty, what does AMC have? Nothing. Its storylines contain little, if any, substance, are devoid of originality and, on almost every level, are either going nowhere or in circles. Only 40-50 percent of its cast is actually talented and those who are–like Vincent Irizarry–are getting the cat and mouse game with their contracts. I don’t know what is worse, Chuck Pratt’s reign of terror that forced people to tune in because of its train wreck status, or the absolute lethargy AMC is suffering from under David Kreizman and Donna Swajeski. Jillian and Jamey may be wishing that Lynn Marie Latham was back at The Young and the Restless, but at this point–if we can’t get Lorraine Broderick back as head writer–I’m desperate enough to want Megan McTravesty back as head writer.

I don't understand the wishing of terrible writers back on shows. I am a fan of D&D, but I will say that when they (David more than Donna) are not inspired, it is BAD (see GL after Tom Pelphrey left)! AMC is in a good place right now, so when I read stuff like that I get a little sad that we have reached a point in these final days of wishing bad writers back to shows where they proved they should have their WGA membership revoked. But I totally get your frustration Luke since you are a long time fan and champion of this show.

Luke I agree with you about Kathryn Hays...she was AMAZING this past week on ATWT! I haven't watched ATWT in like 8 years so she brought tears to my eyes on Friday's episode. Truly heartbreaking. I would really like to see her end up on another show after this past week's performance.

I totally don't understand the Quartermaine's dynamic with Brook Lynn. I totally didn't get her family not wanting to really help her. Weird relationships.

I am also loving Bill/Liam. They are great opposite of each other. It will be great to see where they take this.

Smitty, the Q's have always eaten their young, LOL. They have never been a "warm and fuzzy" family. Save for Jason and Emily all the Q grands get DESTROYED by the elders in that living room.

OH I cried through the Helen Wagner's episode!! Sad( My favorite Nancy storyline was following her 2nd marriage. No it wasn't Chris but Dan & Nancy's storyline of regardless of age love always finds people for many different reasons. Dan & Nancy was married quite few years and then storyline with him having Alzheimer's and the storyline was progressive of the disease of next almost 2 year storyline...Doug at his best. Sad(

I don't think I'd go so far as to say that I want Megan McTavish back. But, yes you're right AMC is not doing well at all right now. In several instances they have sabotaged themselves. They had a good thing going with David/Greenlee and Ryan/Madison. But they destroyed it! It's really hard to understand the mindset of ABC/AMC.

Luke, you mind-reading devil, you!!!!LOL!! Evil Evil
I was JUST watching AMC the other day thinking that Megan McTrashy could/would do a MUCH better job than Kreizman and Swajeski are doing. She wrote more garbage than she wrote decent stories, but she was capable of crafting GREAT stories that were a.)entertaining, b.) were crafted properly and had suspense and c.) were entertaining!! She did have a FEW golden moments/stories. Okay, that's as far as my praise of that woman shall go. K&S haven't proven themselves capable of such a feat since they took over. They are basically PHONING it in, relying on contrived plot points, as the show gets predictable and loses what little bit of luster it has with each passing episode. I don't think that EITHER of us SERIOUSLY wants McTrashy back, but since the network heads ADAMANTLY refuse to hire new head writers, or even promote the writers who have been putting in the work over the years and KNOW the genre enough to POTENTIALLY become head writers, why not give McTrashy a FOURTH chance to drive the show into the ground??? There are, of course, PLENTY of of work writers from soap history who would do a GREAT job with the show, but again---good luck getting them the job with all these hacks waiting in line for the job.

And does ANYONE out there even PARTIALLY buy Ryan and Madison as a VIABLE/INTERESTING couple???? They are, in my opinion, one of the WORST pairings this show has had in years. Nothing against the actors, but the dialogue for them and the quality of the "build up" of this relationship just screams.."We don't have any other characters on the canvas to put these two people with, so we're just gonna throw them together--and you guys are gonna like it!" Well, I DON'T like it. Hell, why can't they just put Ryan with NuLiza or someone else??? And put Madison with Frankie---which will force Randi to LEAVE Pine Valley PERMANENTLY to pursue her modeling career???? It sounds so simple on paper to ME, but then again, I ain't getting paid $35,000 a week to come up with "new material," so perhaps I really don't know what I'm talking about. That's the HEAD WRITER(S)' job, huh????? (eye roll!) Hat Hat

Concerning Brook Lynn, Tracy is not falling for her garbage b/c Tracy used to BE Brook Lynn years ago. She was the 20-something schemer who tortured her family, manipulated and took advantage of them. Hell, she was even willing to watch Edward DIE by refusing to give him his heart medicine, even though he was testing her to see where her loyalties lied. P.S---She failed that test!!

If a family member stole from me, I would wash my hands of them---INSTANTLY. Besides, Brook has proven herself to be "resourceful" in the past, so she's not gonna end up barefoot and homeless or starve to death. I don't believe in ENABLING liars and schemers either, so she deserved to get kicked out!! Now...WHY they haven't kicked Tracy out for the 20,000th time is BEYOND me. She's still got her manipulative tendencies. And YES I agree that Bob Guza CLEARLY hates the Quartermaines. He's killed 85% of them off and shipped the rest of them away. The ones we DO see seem to be thrown in intermittently just to keep the soap press and angry fans off their asses COMPLETELY. Guza is too hung up on Brenda and Sonny to truly care about any other characters, which I find to be sad.

OLTL is getting worse each day. Blair is being portrayed as a TOTAL idiot just to prop up some cartoon villain who is not even REMOTELY interesting. Eli is one of the most atrociously-written "bad guys" that I have had the misfortune to have to watch in YEARS. Good actor, terrible writing!! Seems to be an ongoing theme on MOST of the soaps nowadays.

I think Brooke and the Qs scene was just a set up for her to go to Nik and start Guza's latest recycled plot and yes I know there are only so many stories to tell but the soaps that we all fell in love with knew just how to add the twists that reminded of us of why we love the good girl who falls for the bad boy or the person who has to chose btwn their brain and their heart. Heck, remember actual love triangles where you could honestly root for everyone involved. But I digress, my point and I do have one, is the scene gave us a glimpse of the Qs but ended with Brooke estranged and therefore out of their orbit again as she has been most of the time she has been in town.

I also think that once again putting Nik in a relationship without his having therapy is pointless. He lost Emily, kept her alive in his mind with a brain tumor, dated and dumped that girl whose name I don't remember, had brain surgery, dated and dumped Rebecca, had an affair with his sister in law which damaged one of the best male/female friendships on television, damaged his relationship with his brother, had a child which he doesn't know isn't his biologically and now he is going to have a relationship with a girl who is at least 10 years younger and estranged from her entire family? Daddy issues are on sale in aisle five. I should admit I don't get the writer's fascination with Nik, he is almost always front burner and his stories almost never work and seemed to get scrapped or sped up in a way that leaves them unsatisfying.

I would rather have seen Brooke spend more time with the Qs trying to do things their way and maybe finding out that in the end she couldn't but trying to transfer money from Edward's account via blackberry an hour after she arrived and five minutes after the family left the room? Ridiculous.

We could have watched her bond with Maya which could have led to more time with Johnny who I still want with Maxie but could see with Brooke. Could you imagine Johnny and Ethan coming to pick up Brooke and Maya at the mansion, Edward would blow his stack, there would be tension for Luke and Tracey, you could even put Dante and Lulu in the mix as Dante goes after Johnny and Lulu wonders if it's due to his interest in Brooke, endless possibilities.

said this previously but: Nik could simply pay Brooke's bills with no strings attached and while Carly can stop paying Brooke's rent she can't get her thrown of the building, Nik could pay off the lease and Brooke would have at least six months to find a job and start paying the rent herself.

I was too young to appreciate Nancy before 1985, but I've been an occasional viewer of ATWT since then. You could tell that Helen Wagner was old school. She learned her lines. There was none of Liz Hubbard's improvisational style-although I love Liz, sometimes her adlibbing just doesn't fit the scene. I've seen some Youtube clips of the show from the 1960´s. Some of those scenes with Nancy were over EIGHT minutes long without a break and every line was perfectly delivered.

Re: DOOL

I have never liked Daniel, I have never understood why TPTB whore him out to every female on the show, acting like he's the hottest guy they have. Besides that, he is bland bland bland. Please keep Nicole AWAY from Daniel. That said, I am waiting for the day that Nicole has a hot hookup with Rafe. Is it just me, or do those two have TONS of chemistry together?

Sami shooting EJ.... I am assuming this is Ken Corday's idea of trying to make the show move faster and to make the ratings go back up? I dunno, I just wasn't feeling it.... And then Sami jumping into an engagement with Rafe like, two minutes after her wedding to EJ blew up in smoke? Has Sami ever actually gotten married? LOL At this point I think every single one of her weddings has ended in disaster. By now she should just be happy with living with someone and NOT being married, because obviously marriage isn't right for her.

Re: Brook on GH.

Sorry, I can't feel anything for her, especially listening to her go on to Nik about how she was a victim of being played by Carly, while failing to mention that she drugged Dante to try to get him into bed. It wasn't like she seduced him, she knew he wouldn't sleep with her, so she resorted to slipping him a roofie. If Lulu wouldn't have walked in, she may have suceeded, and it would be nothing less than rape, IMO. That's pretty unforgivable, or at least takes many many years to get past (i.e. Sami Brady). At least with Brook in scenes with Nik, I don't have to pay attention to her anymore and can just ignore their scenes.

I don't understand Tracy's reaction to Brook. She tosses her out for trying to steal from Edward? Does she not remember how she and Luke changed Alan's will and stole from all of his children? I guess Tracy doesn't like competition.

Speaking of Brook - I just don't get how Lulu has managed to pin this all on Brook after Carly confessed that she paid Brook to break up Lulu and Dante. Brook would not have done anything if not for Carly. When Carly said that she was wrong to pay Brook, but that Brook "took it too far", I was confused. Was she trying to say that Brook was supposed to break them up without making out with Dante? I though Carly's imaginary point was to make Lulu see that Dante would cheat on her (what Carly wants Lulu to believe). Are we just supposed to swallow this bs whole or cut it up into bite-sized pieces?

I watched ATWT since the late '70s with my mom and grandmother, and Nancy's been a stabilizing force on the show forever. Losing Helen Wagner is a big blow, but the show did put together a nice, if imperfect, tribute. I loved that Nancy didn't fear changing times. A perfect example was helping Kira learn to read by employing hip hop.

B&B is on fire right now. IDK what the hell is going on in that writer's room, but they need to keep it up.

Y&R is stabilizing and after this Chance crap ends this week, it will be TOTALLY watchable.

I just can't get back into GH. I mean I know this whole "Brenda and Sonny" thing is supposed to draw me back in, but such as this show is devoid of any kind of heart, I am devoid of any type of connection with ANY of these characters anymore. It feels like someone trying to imitate writing a good soap.

As for DAYS...meh...Sami should've shot EJ while he was awake. I totally agree.

OLTL better tighten up...or it will be cut, snapped, crackled, and popped from the schedule simultaneously.

All My Children....

Anyway, my top favs this week were Y&R and B&B...Y&R for the REAL HOMEWRECKERS OF GENOA CITY, and B&B for LIAM and BILL, and I'm actually kind of enjoying the other stories as well. It's always nice to have more than one thing going on on this show, after years and years of the entire show being dedicated to Widge.

I still can't imagined that ATWT will be gone soon. My fond memories are when my mom and two grandmas talk about it for hours and GL too. When I was in School, I can still remember hearing the great ATWT '80's theme and the spinning globe, after a bad day in school and hearing that theme as soon as I walked in the door I knew I was home. It always drawed me in. I was named after soap character Craig.

Loved when Nancy thought that a "rapper" was something you took off of a Whitman's Sampler when Kira was on.

I don't think AMC is that bad, I really don't. Just the last two weeks I've thought it has been a lot better than GH (which is usually my fave)
Is it perfect? hell no, but it's not that bad either. As fot he bad acting? Sure AMC has their turkeys but I would say overall most actors are bringing it and then some. I watch maybe 10 minutes of OLTL a week and in that those clips there is always someone who is way worse than anyone on AMC IMO.

ATWT: I started watching it when we had the SKy Soap channel over in the UK. I was already in love with my dearly departed ANother World but was quickly taken in by wimpish Holden and the "real" Lily Smile. I loved the tribute to Nancy...had me in tears. Then I remembered when soaps had core families who supported one another and strong friendships. Billy Abbott over in GC doesn't even have a buddy he can ask to be his bestman. Oh yeah...Rafe the seat filler.
P.s......Glad to see John Dixon back.

Days: Nicole & Rafe should so end up together but only after he breaks up with Sami...no triangle there please. They already have enough drama between them to make the pairing heated up.

Y&R: if Chance's horrendous tale is over, I guess that means Adam is back Smile :) Smile

B&B: I'm also loving the Bill / Liam scenes. Makes a nice change from the drab Ridge / any of his kids scenes.

What ifs: Spaghetti / Psychotic one had to be the absolute best.

"Some of those scenes with Nancy were over EIGHT minutes long without a break and every line was perfectly delivered."

And they were performed LIVE.
