HomeTVAll My ChildrenSoaps and Breast Cancer: Five Powerful Storylines Jamey Giddens October 5, 2010 7 Comments October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of all the brave people who have been diagnosed with this disease, as well as their loved ones, I wanted to take some time to remember some of daytime’s most memorable breast cancer storylines. Take a look after the jump. In 1994, General Hospital‘s fiery physician Dr. Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the gut wrenching scenes above Monica’s then-husband and sparring partner Dr. Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon) helps her come to terms with the fact that it’s time to tell their sons, AJ and Jason (a young Steve Burton, seen in the clip), that their mother was ill. 7 Responses east.west October 5, 2010 We will never have the pleasure of seeing stories like these ever again. All we are subjected to now is actresses giving it their all (Florencia Lozano, Debbi Morgan, etc) in parodies of these great cancer stories. B&B’s one right now has me @ a ?, b/c it sounds great on paper, but the execution has been flat for me. Log in to Reply ladyofthelake October 6, 2010 I’ll never forget Monica’s cancer storyline. Brings tears to my eyes even now. My mother was going threw her first round of breast cancer then, it hit home so much. It still hits hard for me to watch, especially after my mom lost the battle three years ago. Looking at that clip, I actually find myself missing that version of Jason. I wish a better writer had the balls to find a middle ground between who he is now and what he was. I’m so sick of the brooding mob bull crap and Steve Burton’s deserves better. Log in to Reply Jorpa October 6, 2010 The day Jonathan cut Reva’s hair was the day he became human to me. This was 6 weeks before my father died of cancer. He saw a scene of Reva with the scarf on her head on one her bad days and said she looks like she has cancer like me. I hate this story aired at the same time my father had it. It was really hard to watch. This is the first clip of GL I’ve seen since it went off the air. I’m still crying. It’s a shame we won’t get stories like this anymore. TPTB just don’t care anymore. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 October 6, 2010 Luverica— Leslie Charleson has never won an Emmy, unfortunately. She was heavily FAVORED by critics to win, but Erika Slezak won her FOURTH Emmy instead that night. But I agree……she certainly deserved it. Too bad Leslie and Monica will probably NEVER get a storyline that gritty and powerful again. Log in to Reply luverica October 6, 2010 Thanks for the correction alstonboy4315. I would’ve swore I saw Leslie get an Emmy. Oh well. It must’ve been wishful thinking because Leslie really kicked butt. East.west is right, we never get to see cancer storylines done as well or with as much respect as this anymore. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
