Daytime television has a long history of exploring the realities of war. One of Days of Our Lives' first storylines, way back in 1965, began with Tommy, the oldest Horton son, having been presumed dead in the Korean War. Five years later, All My Children started with a storyline that saw the lead heroine protesting the Vietnam War. Not all the soap storylines involving the military have been positive ones. Who can ever forget Salem's resident schemer Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) assisting a terrorist regime by dressng up as a man? Yeah, let's forget that one

The most recent example of a story involving U.S. troops done right was AMC's introduction of the character of Brot, played by the amazing and naturally-talented J.R. Martinez. Martinez, who suffered burns over 40 percent of his body while serving in Iraq in 2003, bravely allowed AMC to revisit his real-life ordeal in the fictional world of Pine Valley.

On this Veterans' Day, DaytimeConfidential.Zap2it.com would like to thank Martinez and all the other brave men and women (including my Mom and Stepdad), who have risked it all to serve. Whether you're a Democrat, a Republican, a Tea Partier or whatever, it's people like Martinez who make the sacrifice that allows us the freedom to agree to disagree.
