OLTL's Robin Strasser On Viki/Dorian's Truce: "Heaven Forbid This New Friendship Becomes Permanent!"

In an interview with TV Guide's Michael Logan, One Life To Live's bad girl Robin Strasser shared her thoughts regarding her alter ego's newfound friendship with her arch enemy Viki (Erika Slezak).
TV Guide Magazine: Will this Viki-Dorian friendship endure or are they just biding time between blow-ups?

Strasser: I don't think it makes for as exciting a show when they get along. I guess we could both go off and do a very funny Thelma and Louise thing — "Viki and Dorian: the Road Trip." But heaven forbid this new friendship becomes permanent! Those two ladies being at odds has always been my bread and butter. Robin Strasser will be out of a job if Viki and Dorian ever truly have a meeting of the minds!

I'm a fan of more Robin Strasser. PERIOD. She is so much fun as Dorian! OLTL is very fortunate to have her play this legacy character. I agree there is more interesting story with the feud because of the opportunity to add layers. But writers have to be committed to not trivializing the nature of their relationship with pettiness just to keep it adversarial. They share family, positions on important boards and they have common associates. There are plenty of sources of which to germinate story when you look at the canvas and long history of these characters. That said, any truce should be temporary. I think it was Malone who said that these women should not really be in that many scenes together, but when they are in scenes and story, it should be meaningful and purposeful. IMO, that's how you honor their relationship. Let them live their lives and when they spin into each other's orbit, allow the relationship and circumstance to determine direction. There is no need to be friends or even enemies. The characters should be what the situation would naturally demand of them. Anything else is a contrivance.

I thought the scene with Dorian and Viki was one of the best of the week. Let’s not forget that every once in an awhile, Dorian and Viki can be there for each other. Dorian was the first person Viki confided in that she had cancer. That was right before one of Robin Strasser’s departures. Also, just within the last year, Viki genuinely felt for Dorian when David “jilted” her. What makes rivalries like Dorian/Viki, AMC’s Erica/Brooke, and Y&R’s Kaye and Jill are that they may fight like cats and dogs but they don’t hate each other. Neither is going to kick the other when they’re at one of their lowest points and they actually provide the best help to each other. Right now the whole Echo vs. Viki/Dorian storyline is my favorite on this show.

Time for Viki and Dorian to bury the hatchet. I'm so over that feud. These women are pushing 70, for God's sake! Get over it!

Dorian & Vikki working against Echo is the best part of OLTL right now!

I like Viki and Dorian as adversaries. That is more interesting. It is fine if they are friends sometimes but I don't want it to stay that way.

They've never been friends, so it's refreshing to have them be friendly for a change. The rivalry thing has been done to death---it's just annoying now, and kind of sad that these two strong women can't grow and change.

They have been written as friends. It doesn't last. I prefer it that way.

I prefer them as friendly allies. The feud makes Dorian look so pathetic and immature. Viki always reaches out to her and Dorian always spits in her face. Ugh!

I think they're the best friends each other has and always have been. Even when they're at eachother's there's some level of respect between them. I think they were one of the original frenemy pairings ever and I love them that way!

I like them more with conflict in the relationship since that generates more storyline and for me as a viewer, more interest. However, I am more aligned with Malone's take that the situation and circumstance should define how they behave in the relationship. The contrived pettiness in recent years is more the fault of the writers. Two strong women who don't like each other don't have to be reduced to acting like teenagers. I see no reason why Viki and Dorian have to be friends. I see them as individuals who will always be there for each other in their greatest time of need, but friendship over tea and cookies is rather boring.
