HomeTVAll My ChildrenLuke and Laura Reunite on Oprah’s Legendary Soap Star Spectacular! Luke Kerr February 9, 2011 All My Children, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Young and The Restless 48 Comments Oprah’s "Legendary Soap Star Spectacular" episode airs today! During the soaptastic episode General Hospital’s Genie Francis and Tony Geary reunite onscreen to talk about their character’s iconic romance. All My Children scored great coverage during the episode, with Susan Lucci and all of Erica’s husbands on stage. How great will it be to see Michael Nader (ex-Dimitri)? I wouldn’t be surprised if Oprah’s pal Tyler Perry watches, or at least sets his DVR, today since he’s mentioned Katherine Chancellor in the past and the faboosh Jeanie Cooper represents The Young and the Restless. Now for a smal gripe. I know it’s a lot to pack into just one hour, but couldn’t they have fit in Days of Our Lives‘ Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso or Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn? Watch the Oprah promo after the jump! 48 Responses pst17 February 9, 2011 People around The Net have been saying that Kristen and Peter were scheduled to appear but dropped out. It’s not clear why though. Log in to Reply OldGHFan February 9, 2011 It’s too bad the current regime at GH sees no value in Luke & Laura. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott February 9, 2011 This is going to be bomb!!!! I remember the episode that Oprah did with Susan Lucci & all the husbands and lovers Erica had thru Travis in the early 90s…the only ones who didn’t appear were Tom and Jerermy…but the rest were there…..Jeff, Phil, Nick, Mike Roy, Adam, Jack, Travis….god that was great… Log in to Reply curacaoman February 9, 2011 Anywhere Genie Francis is, is great! Log in to Reply Llanview76 February 9, 2011 What, no Erika Slezak, Bob S. Woods or Robin Strasser? I’ll pass thanks though! Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 9, 2011 Luke and Laura should be together on General Hospital! How can anyone watch a soap that tore apart the most legendary supercouple OF ALL TIME?! Log in to Reply jetty February 9, 2011 Is this going to be a total lovefest, or are they going to touch on the sorry state of many soaps today, P&G’s decimation of the form, and the dwindling audience? I’d appreciate at least a little reality among the celebration. Log in to Reply Y2Jin99 February 9, 2011 Maybe Oprah realizes Days of Our Lives is a joke of a soap and no one are good actors. LOL Who was the last Days actor to go on and become famous? I am having trouble thinking of someone. lol Tara Reid? Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 9, 2011 I am watching right now. It warms my heart to think of Luke and Laura reuniting, even if it isn’t real. GH needs to drop all of these newbies and save up that money to bring back GENIE FRANCIS!!!!!!!!!!!! Log in to Reply gslam February 9, 2011 I’m sorry, but once again, One Life to Live is treated like the red-headed step-child of the ABC Daytime line-up. Even with AMC’s ratings in the toilet, and the most god-awful writing on daytime, they STILL manage to get more press coverage than OLTL. I really don’t understand what the heck the PR hacks working for OLTL/ABC Daytime are doing. I work in marketing, and I can tell you the marketing for OLTL is ABYSMAL. Any marketing person would be FIRED from an agency if their work was like that of the OLTL PR team. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 9, 2011 OMG! I almost cried when all of Erica Kane’s husbands came out!!!! I must be getting soft………… Log in to Reply mrsa1107 February 9, 2011 I dont get why NO ONE from OLTL will be on todays show?? I am DVRing it – so will watch later– but already very disappointed that OLTL has no one there representing. I mean seriously Erika Slesak has 6 daytime emmys- the most in the leading actress category! And what about the uber talented Robin Strasser??? Or Judith Light could have been asked or heck even KIM ZIMMER In my neck of the woods Oprah is on ABC– so I had hoped someone from all 3 ABC soaps would have been asked on Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 9, 2011 She’s on ABC in my neck of the woods here too and I was hoping for the same thing. OLTL is on fire right now and Erika being on Oprah would have given the show that HUGE publicity that it so rightfully deserves. I’ll still be watching, as a soapfan at heart, but I do wish someone from OLTL was included. If they were, someone who’s seen it, please let us know! Thanx in advance. That said, I would have also liked it if Peter and Alfonzo could have been part of it. I adore ALL soaps, not just those from one network. Variety is the spice of life and Days may be pissing me off with it’s RIDONKULOUS storylines as of late ‘seriously, they removed Jennifer’s heart for crying out loud!’ but it’s still on the air, and in this day and age, when reality TV, game and talk shows are taking over like the Poland invasion, that alone is an accomlishment that should be recognized. Log in to Reply GLTURNS70 February 9, 2011 Days of Our Lives has always been the DARK HORSE of the Industry, It was the original DARK HORSE of the industry, I think to diss Days is a tremendous insult to the show that had the balls to tell the stories that no other show would ever touch and that has the youthful following considering that in the late 90’s my beloved GL was modeled to be DAYS 2.0 Days ROCKS!!!!!!!!! Log in to Reply GLTURNS70 February 9, 2011 And we all Knew that it was gonna be GH, AMC, & Y&R from the first announcement. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 9, 2011 Jeanne Cooper just almost made me cry. I love that woman and Katherine Chancellor is my 2nd favorite Y&R character of all time, aside from Drucilla! Thank you, Oprah, for making my afternoon!!! Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 9, 2011 I understand that Days has always been a dark horse, but I still wish Peter and Alfonzo could have been included in some capacity, as it was said they were going to be at one time. I’ll still watch, as a soap fan at heart. It is what it is. Edit to Add: Okay, I’m watching now and was excited as hell to see all of Erica’s husbands, especially Dimitri. He was, by far, my favorite. Jack being a close second! Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 9, 2011 Where was Deidre Hall? She’s second only to Susan Lucci as the Queen of Daytime. Log in to Reply luverica February 10, 2011 COME BACK GENIE…COME BACK! I love Genie’s ideas for her character. Too bad Guza probably wouldn’t go for it. Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 And wow, Genie truly looked beautiful on the show today! Just seeing her made me miss Laura that much more. Log in to Reply curacaoman February 10, 2011
COME BACK GENIE…COME BACK! I love Genie’s ideas for her character. Too bad Guza probably wouldn’t go for it.
When she said that, I realized that Laura will never come back. THE LUZA is unwilling or unable to write Laura that way. He only writes women as shrews (Carly), dimwits (Lulu), victims (Laura) or all three at the same time (Brenduh). Having said that, Genie showed clearly that she is the QUEEN OF GENERAL HOSPITAL. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, LUZA! Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott February 10, 2011 I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS IN A FEW HOURS!!!! You’ve all got me excited. Log in to Reply curacaoman February 10, 2011
Where was Deidre Hall? Log in to Reply Katiebug9624 February 10, 2011 It was a wonderful show, because it was dedicated to soaps. Now would I of loved to of seen actors from OLTL, DAYS, and especially GL (even though its cancelled it was on for 72 years) I’m just going to for once, be happy that some of my favorite soap stars were on Oprah during a time that the ratings for all the soaps are so low. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 10, 2011

Where was Deidre Hall? Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 10, 2011 Oprah only had an hour to put this shindig together, so naturally there wasn’t going to be time for her to include ALL of the daytime legends, although I would have rather seen them swap out Michael E. Knight “aka Tad the Cad”, whom I LOVE, with Erika Slezak and Robin Strasser or Deidre Hall. Michael represents a great portion of AMC’s history, but I wouldn’t regard him as a “daytime legend.” I wish she would do a 2nd soap episode and include Deidre, Robin, Erika, Kim Zimmer, Eric Braeden and Melody Thomas Scott, Katherine Kelly Lang and Ronn Moss (B&B’s biggest supercouple ever!) and maybe even throw in some Eileen Fulton and Susan Flannery. Slim chance of that happening, but a guy can still dream!!! Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 Well, when Genie said something along the lines of, “[There's] nothing in me that wants to play a victim anymore” it pretty much solidified that she couldn’t be the Laura Spencer she desires to be under The Luza’s writing. A verbal slap in the face if there ever was one! That man doesn’t know how to write strong women, ESPECIALLY when they return to the canvas. See our new perpetual victim number one Miss Brenda “Screecher” Barrett if you have any questions on the matter! I loved that character with all my heart and that man turned her into an absoulte mess. :stare: Log in to Reply Y2Jin99 February 10, 2011 Yeah had some really great balls airing those Marlena possessed storylines and Vivian burying not 1 but now 2 people alive. zzzzzz Days sucks. It has since the early 90s. Mid 80s was great. Obviously Oprah is an AMC/GH fan and not OLTL. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott February 10, 2011 Guza does the character of LAURA NO FAVORS by keeping her in Paris away from her kids. He should have had her go back into her coma cuz an Awake Laura is a Laura who would BE in Port Charles with all 3 of her kids making up for all the years she was catatonic for the Rick Webber situation. What a bunch of crap… Log in to Reply SoapFan75 February 10, 2011 This was clearly about Oprah’s favorites and it is her show so she can book whatever actor/characters she wants. Maybe she is not a Days, OLTL or any other still on air or cancelled soap fans. Frankly soaps and fans should just be happy that she gave any of the shows her attention. With that said, spot on with Genie Francis and not playing the victim on GH. The only other way Guza writes women is as screaming banshees fighting over a man (Carly and Brenda). Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 Well, I figure someone will always have something to say about anything, good and bad, no matter what it is or how excited we get. I’m guilty of that as well but I’ve been asking ’why, why, why’ on any and everything I could since I was knee high to a pigs eye! Nevertheless, I get the impression that many of us heavily enjoyed and appreciated the episode, despite the minimal griping, because at the end of the day, she didn’t HAVE to do it and she was honoring this genre when so many people at her level of fame easily dismiss it. I applaud her for that! (Not to mention, her set looked really pretty today. That was shallow, but, hey!) And yes, once again, Genie was spot on with what she said. Guza has no desire to write strong women. Period. That’s been evident for years now. Look at Alexis? Where is she? Or Diane?? Where is she?? Writing that book with Spinelli??? Yeah. She has one rightful zinger for that Sonny and then it’s back to SpinelliVille. Log in to Reply missannkimba February 10, 2011 It was great seeing all Erica’s husbands together. I saw Richard Shoberg on the subway last year and he still looks damn good. Didn’t Tony Geary look very “refreshed”? Debbie Morgan is just ridiculously beautiful. Seeing this show reminded me why I loved soaps and also why I no longer watch. Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 ^^ Oh wow, I agree, Tony did look ‘refreshed’! LOL. And my mom watched as well. She said, “Debbi looks damn good for 54 years old!’ She also couldn’t believe how old Susan Lucci is. And to tell you the truth, neither can I and she still looked dynamite after washing her face and having no make-up. I should only hope to look that good someday! Log in to Reply liason4real February 10, 2011 Kudos to Oprah for having soap actors on her show today! Of course, it would have been nice if Erica Slezak who is celebrating forty years on OLTL next month was on the show instead of Michael E. Knight. Where were the actors from B&B and Days? Log in to Reply GLTURNS70 February 10, 2011 TWO SNAPS GHfan-4now!!!!!!!!! “I’ll take it where I can get it!!!”, is what JULIE HANNAN MUST BE SAYING WHILE SHE’S SWEATING BULLETS OUT IN CALI!!!! AND JILL FAREN must be grabbing twiggs on her way down that landslide. So, hey let those people know these shows are still alive for now TWO SNAPS OPRAH!!! Log in to Reply tylerbo20 February 10, 2011 I think it was pretty stupid how she didnt include anyone from Days especially Deidre Hall since she carried that show longer than anyone…bad move oprah! if you werent leaving the air waves i would have stopped watching you. Log in to Reply curacaoman February 10, 2011 AS BET and The Game has shown us, all it takes to make a hit is a network who truly loves a show. Oprah, please buy the Mickey Mouse soaps and move them to OWN. I’m sure you will hire true talent to produce and write them! Log in to Reply doodleynoodle February 10, 2011 I feel sorry for people who started watching soaps in the 21st century. After seeing those little flashback scenes today I could FEEL why I fell madly and passionately in love with this industry. I was a kid in the late 70’s/early 80’s and I was JUST AS interested in Phoebe Wallingford as I was Angie & Jesse. I loved Aunt Ruby as much as I loved Luke & Laura. John & Kay were just as interesting as Paul & Lauren. I watched and enjoyed all of the diverse characters and storylines of ALL ages on ALL of these soaps for entirely different reasons but the constant was I loved and thoroughly enjoyed them ALL. I would have never watched past junior high if soaps were like they are today. I have an idea…instead of ABC re-airing the regurgitated crap-fest of the not so distant past to save money…maybe they should try airing shows from when people actually watched soaps. THAT I would watch. As it stands, I’ve been home because of snow off and on for almost 2 weeks and today was the first day I actually *watched* anything soap related. Pathetic. For the people who were offended by their soap not being chosen for today’s show…Oprah was just featuring the soaps SHE watched back in the day. Which was cool for me because her soaps were my soaps too. I thought it was a total blast! Interesting fact concerning my favorite Diva and the King of Daytime…I kinda always kinda thought Tony was gay. Thank you much, GLTURNS70! I will take those two snaps, indeed! With a twist! And I agree curacaoman. Oprah should kick Big Boy Fronz where the sun don’t shine with a solid knee and tell him ‘I’m running THIS now, boy!’ Oh, if only! LOL. At least you could tell today that she has a great appreciation for the genre and realizes that there are many fans who still exist. And hey, I got to look at Michael Nader/Dimitri again! Win/Win! Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 Oh, thank you, sassy! Log in to Reply luverica February 10, 2011 Michael Nader was working that hat. As much as I love Walt Wiley and Richard Shoberg, it’s hard not to admit that Dimitri Merrick was the coolest of all of Erica’s husbands. That voice, that voice. I miss watching Michael. Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 Oh yeah, luverica! Talk about him working that hat and the voice! Oh yes, that voice! LOL. And you could tell in the audience that people loved them some Dimitri, too! Log in to Reply Spooks19 February 10, 2011 I love seeing Genie Francis on my tv screen but I wouldn’t want to see her back on GH under this regime. Total WORD to what GHfan4-Now said. She and Jeannie Cooper and Susan Lucci are awesome. I think they may understand what viewers want from their soaps more than than any network exec, EP or head writer. Log in to Reply beans4metoo February 10, 2011 I thought the show was great! I was thrilled to see all of Erica’s husbands and Michael was looking right hot! Of all her hubby’s though, Jackson will always be my favorite. Debbie Morgan is absoutely gorgeous and what flawless skin! Darnell is such a sweetheart. I thought it was really something that he walked Debbie down the aisle at her wedding. You can tell what great friends they are. Genie looked amazing of course! Her statement about coming back only if she was no longer a victim completely sums up the current writing on GH and sadly will likely mean she won’t be back so I’m wondering about those rumors I read about her coming back in the Spring. I personally ADORE Michael Knight and of course Tad the Cad is a Daytime Legend. The Tad/Marion/Liza triangle is still talked and written about today and is a part of a current storyline on AMC. Watching those clips of Luke/Laura, Tad/Liza, Angie/Jessie made me realize how far soaps have fallen from the greatest soap era of the 80’s. That’s when I fell in love with soaps and sadly I don’t think anything of that status will ever be again for our shows. And what exactly is wrong with TPTB at AMC? Instead of this Caleb/Erica/Jack triangle, bring back Dimitri and lets get some real competition going for Erica’s affections! Log in to Reply GHfan-4now February 10, 2011 ^^^ Ooh yeah, bring back Dimitri. That really WAS a competition. Who cares if she’s with Caleb?
