HomeTVThe Bold and the BeautifulHoly Hot Yes! Is Y&R Bringing Back Wilson Bethel? Jamey Giddens February 10, 2011 The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and The Restless 54 Comments Okay, if this is true, we are so laying off Maria Arena Bell! CBS Soaps in Depth is hearing Wilson Bethel may be returning as the only thing good about the Great Doppelganger Caper of 2010, Kevin’s (Greg Rikaart) dirty, sexy, intense half brother Ryder on The Young and the Restless. Bethel brought the heat to Genoa City from episode 1. Here’s hoping Y&R finds a red-hot storyline for Ryder that doesn’t involve his drippy sister. 54 Responses lefthandedboy February 10, 2011 The guy is hot. His acting skills… are NOT. Log in to Reply Carol2 February 10, 2011 Every story Ryder was in sucked and I didn’t see any chemistry with anyone in the stories, from sibling to romantic. Bethel is unique and charismatic and clearly has many fans but why bring back a dead end character? I have watched and enjoyed Stephen Nichols on soaps for many many years and yet if you asked me if I wanted him to be written out of Y&R, I would say yes, because Tucker is a dead end character. Log in to Reply Katiebug9624 February 10, 2011 Mmmm him and Jana back together would be a hot mess! Log in to Reply appleridge February 10, 2011 Sorry Have To Disagree, Wilson Was The Only Thing That Worked About Ryder & Daisy He Is A Great Actor & Should Have Submitted Himself For An Emmy Nod. For Those Who Say He Cant Act Watch Tunnel rats Or Generation Kill Plus He Looks Great Shirtless and Made Jana Less BORING Maybe Ryder Could Come Back And Be Romantically Linked To Lauren’s Son Scotty. Yes I Went There. Ryder May Have Beded Jana But Something Tells Me He Could Swing Both Ways. Make This Happen Maria Log in to Reply Carol2 February 10, 2011 If we have to watch other programs to see his talent then that doesn’t say very much for Ryder or for Y&R. They fail to give anyone else interesting story – I doubt they’d make an exception for Ryder. Emily O’Brien is the only one I think has ever managed to make Jana work but that story with Ryder made no sense to me. Log in to Reply appleridge February 10, 2011 Well I Blame Ryder’s Story On The Writers The Writing Has To Be There Because Even Greart Actors Will Come Off Bad Most Of The Time If The Writing Is Not There Log in to Reply Carol2 February 10, 2011 The writing isn’t there for anyone. Every character in every story has been ruined. Some people know how to use their charisma to overcome bad material and stupid relationships (Miller, Muhney, some might say Michelle Stafford or Sharon Case or Eric Braeden), but it’s not easy. If you asked me if I thought that people like Maura West and Stephen Nichols would be so lost, I’d have said, no way. Log in to Reply appleridge February 10, 2011 Well Y&R Does Stephen Nichols No Favors IMHO. He Should Go Back To DAYS Or GH Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 10, 2011 Mmmmmm so sexy!! GREAT NEWS! I loooove Wilson Bethel and he was quite good at Ryder. He really made you feel Ryder’s torment and pain. He would have been even BETTER in the role he originally auditioned for–Chance! Would love to see Wilson and Tricia Cast share scenes. I hope they bring him back and make him a major player, although I do want it to come out that he and Daisy aren’t Sheila’s children and that Sarah Smythe isn’t her sister (Sheila is an only child). Great news for a Thursday morning! Log in to Reply Toscanti February 10, 2011 Y&R writers always waste Great talents and they always have since Bill Bell senior left production and then passed on. Log in to Reply jockteen10 February 10, 2011 I hope they do bring him back, I sort of like him on Y&R. Pluss he’s so incredibly sexy Log in to Reply appleridge February 10, 2011 On Wilson’s Facebook Page Someone Asked The Following R u headed back to Y & R for some more of your bad ass crimes??? To Which Wilson Responded possibly… Log in to Reply appleridge February 10, 2011 Damn Forgot That. As Great As Wilson Is As Ryder, He Would Have Killed As Chance Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 10, 2011 Yay! Rather than wasting Ryder on Jana or someone, I hope they explore whether or not he really is a Carter. AND I hope they explain that little boy Max who went missing from summer camp. Did Sarah kidnap him? If so, who was he and how is he important to the rest of Genoa City? Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon February 10, 2011 I actually thought he had great chemistry with Greg Rikaart, and it wasn’t exactly the sibling kind. I’m not holding any hopes for a great story for Ryder if he comes back. Great stories for me are those that arise from who the characters are supposed to be and what their life experiences have been, the kind of stories Y&R used to be famous for telling back in the day. The only story they have like that now is the Nikki/Deacon pairing. Nikki has always been attracted to men who have a hint of danger, and Victor has always played her for a fool. So it’s logical for her to get involved with sexy Deacon. They’ll probably put Ryder with Jana again and that whole thing felt really contrived the first time around. Log in to Reply Smitty February 10, 2011 Ugh can we just forget Ryder, Daisy and Sarah and pretend it never happened? Log in to Reply GLTURNS70 February 10, 2011 I’m thrilled I think that the Y&R younger set is all over the place and I really hope that they can bring him in to tie them closer together. Maybe with ABBY this time round? Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 10, 2011 Wilson Bethel is a great actor. RYDER is the one that Maria should have kept around instead of his demented, ridiculously non-talented, cartoonishly stupid SISTER, Daisy. That would have spared me, as well as the batteries in my computer mouse, from having to fast forward through all of her cringe-inducing scenes. He had great chemistry with Emily O’Brien/Jana, and even though their relationship made about as much sense as Adam and Sharon’s relationship does, they were hot together. So what does MARIA “Thank God for Nepotism, or else I wouldn’t have a job” Bell do??? She fires him. Really smart. Actually, not really…… Bring back Ryder for Jana so that she can stop pining away for Kevin and Hogan can stop trying to turn her into Genoa City’s Julia Lindsay. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott February 10, 2011 I was never sold on Ryder. I guess I am the minority. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 10, 2011 Ooh, Abby and Ryder could be good! I find Marcy Rylan insufferable as Abby but perhaps Wilson Bethel can bring out the best in her. Plus, there’s all sorts of angst to be had in a Ryder/Abby/Daniel triangle. They flirted with Ryder and Abby when Hayley Erin was in the role, so it would interesting to see them pick up on it now and resolve the Max story. Log in to Reply Jenny February 10, 2011 HOTNESS! Log in to Reply goyankees February 10, 2011 Huh? While Wilson could NEVER be put in the STD category (Sabrina/Tyra/Daisy – The worst hires of “Actors” by Y&R maybe EVER), I’m baffled, Jamey, by your love for what appears to be for both the actor and the character?? Ryder was one dimension. He stood there and said words. Did he ever smile, laugh, tell a joke? Nah, not ever that I can recall. He unlocked a cage 3 dozen times and threw donuts to Lauren and Jana. A Character that was pushed around by a Horse with Long Hair (I’m sorry, but Yvonne Zima brings out the worst in me) A Character that slept with the wife of Kevin; who we’ve come to appreciate (IMO) If appearance means that much (It doesn’t to me) than YES, Wilson is great to have back. But again. My obsession with Hot Soap Characters died when Frisco Jones left Felica. The litnus for me is: “do you miss Ryder on Y&R”? My answer is NO. In fact, I forget the character even existed, unless Kev is reminding Jana. In all the Soap Polls, Daniel Goddard and Cane meant so much more to the fans. (Fav Actor/Couple in Digest like, 15 months straight) DG goes and John Driscoll and Wilson B. return??? Eh. I’m not sold on some of this. Maybe Tristan Rogers helps me fix all that. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 10, 2011 Alstonboy, I totally agree. Ryder is also my favourite between him and Daisy. Ryder should never have left the show because he has a lot of potential, especially if he really is Sheila Carter’s son. I LOVE the idea of Ryder hooking up with Scotty Grainger! That would be an awesome twist. This show needs more gay lovin’, especially since they don’t seem to want to rapidly age Kyle and pair him with Noah. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 10, 2011 A-Crane,, I agree. It would be hot. I will embrace ANY gay love story, even though Maria Bell would undoubtedly screw it up. Log in to Reply tedew February 10, 2011 I don’t think that the Ryder/Jana pairing was contrived. It worked at the time and served to twist the plot a bit. If they got back together it would not bother me. Wilson Bethel probably is a good actor but acting is much more than from the Jeanne Cooper school of acting. Jeanne Cooper can be very good but Wilson does seem to smolder and also seems quite layered. Speaking of smoldering … the badness in me likes the thought of an “evil” Kevin/Ryder pairing if they turned out not to actually be brothers. Also, a pairing with Mr. Grainger is an interesting concept; plus it would serve to drive Lauren completely up the wall. (By the way, he does look nice (if just a bit too wholesome) in the picture above so I’d prefer a slightly more mussed up version. Log in to Reply Jon February 10, 2011 Ryder and Scotty or Rafe or even Phillip III would be smokin’!!!!!!! Log in to Reply Carol2 February 10, 2011 Why would the show suddenly move beyond more than men straightening each other’s ties? They were too tame to even do what ATWT did. Their idea of shocking would be Ryder petting Kevin’s squirrel. Is petting someone squirrel code for something? lol Sorry, but WB was NOT that good, IMO. All he did was just stand there with weird and creepy stares. I would rather have Cane. Log in to Reply ChrisGa February 10, 2011 I would love to see him back….especially shirtless and in a pair of low-slung pajama bottoms . That body of his is SICK. And lest you think I’m just about the shallow, I think he’s actually a pretty good actor(would have been perfect for Chance I think). Did I mention the sick body? Log in to Reply appleridge February 10, 2011 Wilson Is A Great Actor & He Has A Great Look. Thats A Dynamite Combo. Log in to Reply Dyllan February 10, 2011 Could someone show me a clip of WB great acting? He did nothing great on Generation Kill and he didn’t do anything special on Y&R. And to say he carried his storyline is not really saying much when he acted opposite YZ. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 11, 2011 Wilson Bethel is basically the best male actor to be cast by the Arena Bell/Rauch regime. Ryder was the best thing to come out of the Return of Deacon/Sarah Smythe storyline. I love how he is so troubled and haunted–that’s my kind of character. I love tortured, tormented young men!! Maybe that is why I continue to love Phillip. Log in to Reply miamibeachguy February 11, 2011 He is YUMMY! Log in to Reply tedew February 11, 2011 OK … Wilson Bethel may not be a great actor in the true meaning of that word but I for one (and so do some others) do think he is and can be very good. I think that some of you think that you need to see exaggerated facial expressions and much hand wringing to be good, but that went out when sound came in. Just watch him if he does reappear and then try to tell us that he does not seem to be thinking things through in his mind at all times. (and oh yes, the toned swimmer body kind of does help a bit) Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 11, 2011 Apparently SOD is hearing he’s back with a CONTRACT this time. YES!!! And I hope they fire Eden Riegel to pay for him, too. Log in to Reply ChrisGa February 11, 2011 I think the problem that some may have with the lovely Wilson(as well as other actors coming into daytime) is that not every actor/actress entering daytime follows the parameters of “soap acting”. You know, the over-the-top, sobbing-uncontrollably, no holds-barred style that some of daytime’s best subscribe to(Kim Zimmer, Robin Strasser and Liz Hubbard are three that spring to mind). Don’t get me wrong, I worship all three of those women and I love to see all of them rip into a scene on any given day but you have to admit that style of acting is pretty specific to daytime. I think WB has a pretty naturalistic, easy-going style that may be off-putting to some who expect over-the-top hand-wringing. Or it could be that I just like that sick body of his. Yeah, could be . Log in to Reply appleridge February 11, 2011 That Would Rock But Cant Find It On SOD’s Site Log in to Reply Dyllan February 11, 2011
I think the problem that some may have with the lovely Wilson(as well as other actors coming into daytime) is that not every actor/actress entering daytime follows the parameters of “soap acting”. There is a way to act subtle without just standing there giving creepy stares to everyone in the room. That is all this guy did. For example, the actor who played JT could act subtle. TL could pull an emotional scene when needed. This guy has yet to do that. I think more people are excited about his supposed “hotness”. Frankly, he gives me a creepy vibe. The only positive thing I can say is that WB and GR did have some strange azz sexual chemistry. Even I won’t deny that. And why did he get a contract? They got rid of DG for this guy? Recurring would have been okay. Maybe he will get with Lily. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 11, 2011 appleridge, it’s in the magazine. Not interested in what the “Hate-ahs” say. Wilson is an amazing actor. The BEST news is that the return of Ryder could led to the return of the one and only KIMBERLIN BROWN…YESSSSSS!!!!!!! Log in to Reply appleridge February 11, 2011 IMHO Cane Has Run His Course & People Dont Stay In Soaps Forever For Me Wilson & Ryder Were A Big Reason I Watched In 2009-2010 So Im Hopeful He Will Get Good Material Log in to Reply Carol2 February 11, 2011
I think the problem that some may have with the lovely Wilson(as well as other actors coming into daytime) is that not every actor/actress entering daytime follows the parameters of “soap acting”. Yeah, could be .
Y&R isn’t exactly awash in the acting style you describe. Instead it is already full of men who look like they are adding up their lunch menu in their head throughout taping. So while Bethel probably is a talented actor, “naturalistic” on a show with phone-inners like Braeden and Morrow amounts to more of the same. I don’t think the talent matters that much when the writing is so bad. Bethel’s writing was horrible throughout his run. What’s going to change now? If so many wonderful actors have done absolutely nothing to make their lousy material better in their Y&R stay then I don’t know how he would be any different. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 11, 2011 It’s just plain NICE to see Ryder on my screen. I like the character, I love the actor, and there’s a lot of potential for story with Sheila Carter’s supposed son. Carol and Dyllan, if you don’t like it, tune the f**k out, thank you very much! Log in to Reply tedew February 11, 2011 ChrisGa … I agree with your comment #35 because I said the same thing in my comment #34 but you are getting all the responses; I’m so dejected (just kidding). Dyllan … if Wilson managed to give you the creeps as Ryder, doesn’t that kind of tell you something; like maybe he is doing a good job? Carol2 … come on now WB is nowhere near the basement along with Mr. Gudegast and Mr. Morrow. There is no doubt in my mind that Hans does read his lines from whatever they can provide him with 100% of the time. Joshua … well he is just so bland and somnolent with his line readings. (By the way, I appreciate and understand all of everyone’s valid and constructive opinions so my retorts are usually tongue in cheek but do correspond to what I truly think at the time.) Log in to Reply Carol2 February 11, 2011 I said that I thought Bethel was probably talented. So if he is – nothing he ever had on Y&R ever proved any test for talent – then he’s automatically better than Morrow and Braeden. I just don’t really understand the idea that “naturalistic” acting is going to have an impact on a show which already has a lot of actors who aren’t exactly burning up the screen. I’ve just seen so many hyped names flop on Y&R and yet once again it’s time to be happy for another hyped name. It’s rinse and repeat. I think Bethel would have been better off continuing to work on his film career, since he was almost cast in Captain America. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 11, 2011 Carol, how the EFF is Wilson Bethel “hyped”? He’s really not that famous, he’s not a “name” actor like Eric Roberts or Michael Badalucco. That’s just total B.S. It’s just ridiculous that people complain about Wilson Bethel/Ryder when there are SO. MANY. BIGGER issues with Y&R these days. Log in to Reply Dyllan February 11, 2011 WB gave me the creeps not b/c of how he acted, but how he physically looked. I do agree there is a difference in soap acting and prime time acting. For example, I saw Billy Miller on Justified. Wow, I thought he sucked. He seemed to be overacting. I get why people say he is hammie. I don’t think BM will ever make it in primetime. He is soap gold, IMO. But, I have yet to see WB do anything impressive at all. Log in to Reply Carol2 February 11, 2011 Billy Miller overacts constantly on Y&R, but the show writes around that. “Carol, how the EFF is Wilson Bethel “hyped”?” Look at the glowing post he got here on his return. That’s not hype from the show, but it means a soap website which many people enjoy reading has helped promote his return. The show also seems to have some investment in trying to make Daisy and Ryder happen. I think they saw the Sarah story as a masterpiece and are still dumbfounded that viewers disagreed. Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 11, 2011 The Sarah story was not as good as it should have been because Kimberlin Brown’s deal to return fell through and they had to back-track and re-create Sarah as Lauren’s doppelganger. Wilson was the best thing about it, of course. But the fact is, the “Sarah Smythe” story was STILL one of the better stories on Y&R last year! All of the Victor, Bacteria, Patty/Emily, Jack/Phyllis/Nick/Sharon/Adam garbage was SO. MUCH. WORSE. than Sarah Smythe, which was at least intriguing with the Sheila connection and Tracey Bregman’s performance. I don’t get the hate and never will. Wilson perfectly brings to life the emotionally troubled son of a maniacal nurse and an abusive creepo. He’s beautiful to look at and has these amazingly haunted eyes. Love him! So glad he’s coming back long-term. I hope they resolve the Max story and give Wilson something decent to work with. Log in to Reply DGfan01 February 12, 2011 They are bringing this fool back, who can’t even act, but they get rid of someone who actually could – Daniel Goddard (Cane). REALLY?????? The fact DG is hot looking doesn’t hurt him either!! Log in to Reply DGfan01 February 12, 2011 Cane has run his course? Wilson & Ryder were a big reason you watched? WHAT did this actor ever do on screen to validify this comment?? If you move past his looks, which were average, you’ve got nothing!! The guy couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag!! Log in to Reply ChrisGa February 12, 2011 No offense Carol2 but when I used the term naturalistic I wasn’t using it as another term for “phoned-in”. As I’ve said numerous times on these boards, if that term were actually in the dictionary, a picture of Joshua Morrow would be staring back as the example given. Again, a big difference between being natural and looking as though you’ve looted the local pharmacy of it’s Ambien supply. As for “soap acting” not being prevalent on Y&R, have you watched this show in the last couple of years? Eileen Davidson, who’ve I’ve watched on this show since about 1980, is often quite good….when’s she’s not asked to weep for her dead child or think she’s being haunted. She was simply HORRIBLE last year during the whole Adam/Sabrina’s ghost bit; terribly over-the-top in the worst way. And Stacy Haiduk, who was oft-times quite brilliant, was also about as subtle as a sledgehammer for the majority of the time she was portraying nutjob Patty. Even Doug Davidson, who has been Y&R’s unsung hero for the last thirty or so years, gave in to temptation during the ep when “Mary Jane” revealed herself as Patty; it was rather cringeworthy on a few levels. And you, as well as others, mentioned Billy Miller, who mugs four out of every five episodes he’s in like there’s no tomorrow. So, again, it may not be “awash” as you so eloquently put it, but there’s more than enough to be had. Again, just my opinion. P.S. Didn’t mean to steal your thunder Tedew; I should’ve read your post more carefully before I opened my mouth . Log in to Reply AlistairCrane February 12, 2011 ^^^ Ha ha ha, an upset Cane fan! I guess I shouldn’t poke fun at you given how your “boy” was gunned down, but I am REJOICING that Cane is good and the hot, talented actor Wilson Bethel is BACK!!!
