GH’s Maurice Benard: “There Is A Very Real And Deep Love Between Sonny and Brenda”

What is it about Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Brenda (Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo) that has General Hospital viewers wanting more? TV Guide’s Michael Logan gets the skinny from the dimpled dapper don, Maurice Bernard.

TV Guide Magazine: What is it about these two ridiculously dysfunctional characters that so transfixes the audience?

Benard: Despite all their problems and their crazy history, there is a very real and deep love between Sonny and Brenda and the audience sees that. The fans want to believe that kind of love is still possible these days. We’re talking about two really screwed up people who are both there for each other. They take care of each other in a way no one else can. Both are really fragile. Sonny tries to play tough and all that but underneath he is really just a scared little boy. They understand each other because they’re both so damaged. I think a lot of that comes from how Vanessa and I feel about each other as people.

BULL..there no longer is any chemistry with these two!

And this viewer here, doesn’t believe they love each other on screen. And it shows!
I think Brenda and Sonny are great for each other but i’m more of a Jax and Brenda fan.
I’m more of a Brenduh + Death fan but to each their own, i guess.

Even Maurice knows that Sonny should NOT have anymore kids. Are you listening Guza??

Awwww how sweet…so why doesn’t the macho meat face take his Dulcinea into the sunset, let the mob pursue them, and return the show’s focus back to the hospital? Maurice Bernard can just show up on AMC then as Nico Kelly and all will be right with the world.

I agree. There is limited chemistry between the two actors. Unfortunately their has not been much growth in regards to Vanessa Marcil’s acting ability and I am sure others have noticed. I believe it may have actually regressed. Maurice takes the acting skill very seriously.
It is just so dissapointing. I have watched the Youtube videos of the two when their journey began and they were just “heat.” It was also noticable when she had a short return in 2002/2003. There was chemistry there when they were just near each other. But the writing was a bit better back then. Also, not to put too much on looks, Vanessa features have changed a bit. It could be that an actor may not find those features as attractive as before.
It does seem the wall has been up for both for some reason, this time around. I remember Vanessa stating that when she first met Maurice and they looked at each other it was like a lightning bolt, and she also stated she has never felt that reaction with any other actor that she has worked with and when she stated this, it was back in 2003.

Maurice is just hot. The man still looks good.

I stopped watching GH many years ago when it became focused on the mob. I still don’t get why they think daytime TV viewers would want to see this. Maurice is a talented actor and I think he is great so this is nothing against him, just the writing for the show. As for Vanessa, I don’t really care about actors who come back to soaps as their last choice and the countdown begins the day they first air as to how quickly they will leave. I just can’t get into that, and I think it is sort of a slap in the face to those dedicated actors who stick by their show. Oh well, to each his or her own.
