Mystery Solved: GH's Suzanne Is The Balkan's Wife!

Helen Keller called; told me she saw this eons ago (as did the DC crew, listen on the next podcast)... General Hospital star Adrienne Barbeau revealed to TV Guide's Michael Logan her alter ego Suzanne is The Balkan's (Daniel Benzali) wife. Barbeau gives the scoop on what to expect

TV Guide Magazine: Suzanne has spent months wringing her hands over Brenda's well-being. So it was all an elaborate fraud? Brenda's gonna freak when she finds out!

Barbeau:
When [head writer]Bob Guza told me about Suzanne's true identity I was, like, wait a minute, how can this be? How do I justify all of Suzanne's behavior up until now? How do you explain her friendship with Brenda? I also wondered if I'd have played any of this differently if I'd known all the facts when they hired me.

Welcome to the wonderful world of WTF GH writing, Adrienne.
You've just been Guza-fied with FronsVision where NOTHING makes sense on this crapfest of a soap!

The real issue for me lies in the fact that this version of Brenda is not connecting to the fans as a geniune version of the previous incarnation. There is a sect of the fan base that is out on Brenda, because her relationships and interactions with characters are not as we remember. Ideally, if the fans were connected to a sl featuring a version of Brenda they even sort of recognized, I don't think the issues you present in terms of her validity as a model would get nearly as much attention as they are.

Professions are accessories for a soap character, they may provide the onus for a specific behavior, or give us an insight in terms of a personality trait. Where GH made an error was the fact that they made Brenda's profession such a large part of the story (not to say that she shouldn't have a career) but, Brenda's profession, which she did not have upon leaving PC, is not going to make people tune in, especially when that profession has so little to do with the characters she had relationships previously. Not enough focus on the characters IMHO...

Marezi.....This is what I think. And I am more than likely wrong.
She gets kidnapped after her wedding. At first nobody knows if she is dead or alive. That leaves the door open for her NEVER to return?? They won't kill her. They would rather kill a child for a storyline.
I really am planning on her being gone for a good month or 2. Please tell me she isn't coming back after a week!!!!!! Evil

JAQ I don't know how long she will be gone missing. But do you really think we are done with the Brenda hour? Even for a month? I just don't see us getting a break from her presence. LOL But I hazard a guess she isn't missing long.

Maybe they will try to move this story along as Jason is getting close to finding out the truth. Anyway I hope he is. Hes asking a lot of questions and once Jason starts asking questions he needs to be proven right. Superman can't be wrong now can he?

jmoney What was Brendas job when she left last time? I just remember her coming back for a little bit. Isn't this when Alcarzar had her on the boat but I had no idea the woman even had a job.
Or was that the second time when her and Jason got married because she thought she had the brain condition like her mother. I know she was involved with the music biz a long time ago.

I get so confused when they come and go and come and go. and if I am not that invested in someone that pops up more than a jack-in-the-box I don't really pay attention.

****************

That's probably the funniest thing I've heard all day long! Laughing out loud

And you know, as a former Brenda FANATIC, quite frankly, I have to agree with Marezi. (I've been doing that alot lately, lol) But I have to admit that I'm sick of hearing that Brenda might return again. That annoys me. Sometimes you just CANT always go home again. When she returned in 02, the magic was still there all around, and I heavily enjoyed it. The ratings went UP because she was still the Brenda we all knew and loved, but she had matured overtime and the writing was still competent for the most part. Sure certain aspects were contrived, but we let it go because we appreciated the storytelling. Fast forward 8-9 years. They thought they could recreate that magic just by announcing her name, running an insane amount of promos ad nauseam, and showcasing reruns all about her during AMC and OLTL time slots just in case we forgot that Sonny/Brenda/Jax was THE hottest triangle of the 90's. I'm sorry, but no matter how much I love a character, if the writing for them is not up to par, I'm not going to be satisfied. I can only look at the same face for so long before I get bored if they have nothing of substance to offer. Unless that face is Shemar Moore. That man's the ONLY exception for me. And I'd say he has a good dose of, ahem, substance. Wink

Yes I do. Maybe I am stupid, but how can TPTB make the same mistake twice? Turning the show back into the Brenduh hour would be disasterous. Between the Brenduh hour & Liz leaving, the viewers would be peed off.
I seriously am thinking, she (VGM) is all but done. In fact I am counting on it. So if I see her back on my screen come March, you know I will be in pain. Actually she comes back, I may leave. That is how much I detest her.

SUPERMAN..lol Big smile Big smile

My memory might be off, but I don't think Brenda actually said the word, miscarry.  I think she said the baby was gone.  That she'd gotten sick and when she woke up, Suzanne told her the baby was gone.

Then about a week later, when Suzanne and Brenda are talking, the baby comes up in conversation, which surprises Suzanne, because Brenda had always told her to keep quiet about it.  Suzanne says something like, "remember the PR nightmare I went through keeping that a secret",  which to me meant that they had somehow kept it quiet and hidden.

That's when I started thinking the baby was alive and Suzanne knew where he/she was.

Maybe I'm just a simple girl at heart, but I thought the reveal of Suzanne as Mrs Balkan was genius.  Of course I suspected it, but to have it revealed, the way that it was, was genius.  IMHO

i dont like brenda and sonny together, i do believe that brenda and sonny will admit that its safer for them to be apart. I knew that the new ppl in GH like Theo, suzzanne, siohban, sean are all connected to each other. whether blood or business, and it all worked out how i thought it would but i want Sam and Jason to get married and have their "happily ever after" THEY DESERVE IT they sacrificed so much to be together and they make GH what it is. I also dont like how Robin avoids her own marital issues and has the nerve to play match maker. Patrick is trying hard to get her back and she's too wrapped into B&S things to see that what she has is a REAL marriage compared to what B&S will be have. She should feel guilty for putting Brenda in danger. LISA NEEDS TO GET IT TOGETHER B4 SHE PERISHES! SHE HAS MEN FALLING ALL OVER THEMSELVES AND SHE WANTS THE ONE MAN SHE KNOWS SHE CANT HAVE. ELIZABETH LIED ABOUT THE RESULTS OF THE TEST SO SHE WOULDNT LOSE JASON. ITS SAD THAT LITTLE JAKE MAY DIE Wink Shock Sad( Cool

GH IN 2011 WILL BE CRAZY AND I WILL BE WATCHING IT TIL THE WHEELS FALL OFF OF IT.

Perkie- I'm going to do a little research on those eppys from the other week and see. I asked my daughter last night who watches with me and she said she thought Brenda said miscarry as well.

I like the twist with Suzanne being Mrs. Balkan as well but it was predictable. Regardless of sloppy writing or ease of finding spoilers online which both are a part of soap watching these days, I think they just become predictable over time because we all have watched them for SO long, you just eventually start recognizing hints and signs. Ex...everyone talking about a child that did or didn't die 3 years ago..now as soap fans we all now that if a 3 year old child suddenly shows up in PC, odds are who that child is..LOL. It just comes with years of watching that you start to be able to predict what will happen.

I will still say that the ONE time in the past decade or so that I was TOTALLY and COMPLETELY surprised at a soap twist was when Lucky supposedly died in the fire years ago and the final scene of that one eppy which showed Jonathon Jackson banging on the door of the room Helena locked him in yelling to get out. I was completely shocked that Lucky wasn't dead. Sadly, I don't get surprised like that by the soaps much anymore.

Marezi, I don't recall Brenda's job during her 2002 stint, but I do know that in her initial run she was 1/2 of L&B records with Brooklynn's mama! Classic stuff with those two and Wally.

Perkie - I agree with you about Mrs. Balkan's reveal. Very nicely done. To have her sitting in that chair with her back to the Balkan when he walked in, just classically done for me. Brenda's best friend is the wife of the man who wants her dead. Intriguing...

Beans, those scenes between Lucky & Faison are some of my favorite scenes GH has ever done. For me, the emotion jumped through the TV.

Okay I found something. I watched the clip from the 2/2/11 eppy where Suzanne showed up and her and Brenda spoke about the baby. Suzanne used the word miscarry/miscarriage twice.

Suzanne: " I was with you in Africa when you woke up from that fever and found out you miscarried."

Suzanne: "You made me promise that if the day came that you ever mentioned the baby or the miscarriage that I'd shut you up."

Now, again I'm not a medical professional but I always took the word "miscarry" to mean that the fetus wasn't viable or wasn't to term and you lost the baby. I don't think that miscarry should be used to refer to a full term baby. And I don't think that term is used when you are far enough along to deliver a child. If the baby was born dead then it would have been "stillborn". If it was born alive then she "delivered". Miscarry leads me to believe there was no baby born. So, if they come back now and give us a 3 year old kid, that's just sloppy writing.

Beans - My understanding of miscarriage matches yours. That said I am no expert, and probably even less of an expert than you. Smile

That said, would it be plausible for Brenda to think she miscarried. When in fact she did not? Maybe Mrs. Balkan has the baby, but wants Brenda to think she miscarried for whatever reason?

Again - no medical expert, just throwing out ideas?

Jmoney- I thought that too (that Brenda thought she miscarried) and IF that baby is alive, I'm thinking that's how they'll write it. But technically it still will make no sense. Because if our understanding of "miscarriage" is correct, that would mean that if she "miscarried" she wasn't far enough along to deliver an actual baby. If she delivered a baby, she had to have been pretty far along and she would've had to have known how far along she was so she wouldn't buy Suzanne telling her she "miscarried" unless she was pretty stupid. I think it will be that they used the term miscarry to lead us to believe the baby is dead and are now going to turn around and "shock" us with it being alive. Which again is sloppy writing. Because if they want to decieve us they need to learn to write it in a way that is medically correct.

She didn't miscarry. She had the baby and Suzanne stole it.
However, as I just reported in SPOILERS, the writing changes day to day.
