Peter Bergman “Thrilled” by Former Soap Sibling Melissa Leo’s Oscar Win

The Young and the Restless’ Peter Bergman couldn’t be happier for his former All My Children "sis" Melissa Leo.  Leo, who played Linda,  sister of Bergman’s Dr. Cliff Warner on the sudser back in 1984, won the Academy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in The Fighter on Sunday night. Bergman tells Soap Opera Digest,

"I was thrilled to see her win acting’s ultimate prize last night.”

    Good for her!!!

And I am soooooo tired of all of those politically correct pearl clutchers giving her crap because she dropped the “F bomb” during her acceptance speech!! First of all, it was HER acceptance speech, not to mention HER special moment!! And she had the right to be shocked, bewildered, overwhelmed and just completely at a loss for words during HER moment!!! Although she did seem slightly intoxicated and seemed to slur her words, she was also ENTITLED to that as well. After all, it’s not every day that you take home one of those golden guys……

    Okay, rant over!

    Congrats, Melissa!!!

I’ll proudly call myself a “pearl-clutcher”. I watched the Oscars outside the US and Melissa’s f-word was not bleeped there. She was dressed and sounded like a cheap hooker. I happen to be extremely fond of the f-word, but you won’t catch me using it in front of 10, much less 1 billion people.

And yes. It was her speech, but if she had decided to strip naked and run around the stage, it still would have been her speech, would anybody think that was OK?

I’m glad to hear that a former soap performer won the highest award there is in the acting business.

I’m sorry to see that it was this tacky, classless woman.

Melissa Leo is obviously from the Omarosa school of publicity-seeking. My feeling is that she planned to say f**king all along. The rather disturbing Oscar campaign she was conducting before the actual ceremony shows how far she was willing to go.

And now she’s doing an apology tour instead of letting this thing die a natural death.

alstonboy … you are right on here.

The others … you are all way off base.

Granted she did look much better if not great in her Frozen River best actress nomination ceremony outfit and I was not a fan of her getup this time but the weather could also have had something to do with that. I thought there were a number of high profile personalities there who looked rather disheveled (how many of the ladies actually had hair that looked good?) but the cheap hooker comment is a bit of a stretch.

There is no way, in my opinion, that Ms. Leo planned that speech at all; she would have to be a much greater actor than she already is to have reacted to herself the way she did. Plus, after the interminable presentation by Kirk Douglas; who wouldn’t be off kilter? (Kirk’s appearance however remains admirable and inspiring.) I also live outside the US (in Atlantic Canada) but choose to watch the US broadcasts to avoid our mind numbing commercials. I’m not offended that she said it but the obvious bleeping censorship is rather amusing and pointless.

Campaigns in many forms seem to be the norm, so if that disturbs voters then they don’t have to vote for her. She won this and others fair and square. Plus she didn’t go the dangerous body morphing route to stake an award.

Oscars are getting to be kind of annoying these days. There is usually no surprise factor anymore and all seems to be a foregone conclusion by ceremony day. Maybe it would be better if they were voted on and presented in January before the other awards have influenced them.

(I find it more disturbing that this site now seems to be double underlining some key words that link to our Patron Saint of Daytime Chat, Saint Oprah.)

    Tedew–

Thanks for the support!! And I am sorry, but I don’t equate a SIMPLE slip of the tongue with PURPOSELY disrobing and streaking at the Oscars (which Robert Opel did in 1974!)

Somehow, I don’t think that Melissa INTENTIONALLY said what she said to offend the PC police. If she did, she wouldn’t be going on an “apology tour.” And BTW: The whole idea of her going on a tour to apologize for making an honest mistake really makes me question where this country is going. And I won’t get going on a tangent about that…………..

And as I have said before, the Oscars are created to attract an ADULT crowd, and adults who can’t handle profanity should probably spare themselves from the possibility of being “corrupted” and just STOP watching television COMPLETELY. It’s EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME, even on the Cartoon Network and more wholesome channels such as PBS.

Words have power. If some racist pig calls me the n-word, I have a right to be upset. If some homophobic Neanderthal, calls me the other f-word, I am entitled to feel offended. And if some incredibly self-serving, ego-driven Hollywood actress uses profanity inappropriately in a public setting, she deserves to be reprimanded not praised.

I share your opinion that she seems to be looking for all the publicity she can get. I know you tend to be rather extreme in your opinions, Soap Armageddon, but I’m sure even you don’t believe she was planning to drop the f-bomb all along.

I do think think she’s being all fake now when she keeps saying how sorry she is.

    Vicki-love-hudson,

I am not trying to offend you. You are entitled to be offended. But I don’t view the f word that Melissa used with the same level of disdain as I would a racial or homophobic slur. To me, they are in two different ball parks. I am sure that any of us would be upset if someone addressed us with one of those disgusting words. I have been called the OTHER f-word before and most of my older family members have personal experience with being called the n-word, so I am well aware of the power that they carry along with them.

I simply feel that we are on two seperate sides of this coin, so we will simply have to agree to disagree on this one.

    No hard feelings……….. :) :) :) :) :)

Alstonboy, I’ve always enjoyed your posts. I’ve read enough of them to make the judgement that you’re an individual with a point of view who always expresses himself respectfully….We disagree on the Melissa Leo thing, but we agree on so much else that there’s no way I take offence from this particular instance of disagreement.

*BTW, like you, I live in hope that one day Y&R will see sense and bring back your diva. :)

    Vicki-love-hudson,

I hope that they bring back my diva as well. I have been praying to the soap gods, but they are clearly busy trying to keep the remaining six soaps on the air, so my messages appear to be going straight to voicemail!!! But hope still springs eternal!!!

    I know I’m a flamethrower, capwell. LOL

To be honest, No. I don’t think she said it intentionally. And I do think this is one of those instances where people are going to be split right down the middle. But I’m a big fan of the old-school Hollywood actresses like Lena Horne, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, etc. Women who could be she-devils in their personal lives, but always carried themselves with class and dignity in public.

Opinions are good whether we agree or not.

I just think that the ones bad posting Ms. Leo are just way off base and over the top in their criticism. She made a mistake. She didn’t plan it. She’s sorry. Who cares? I basically think that what most of you are saying about her and describing her as on the negative side are much more disturbing than what she mistakenly dropped on Sunday night.

Come on … if Saint Shemar or Saint Victoria (aka Drucilla) did the same thing at the Daytime Emmys or elsewhere, I doubt that the reaction would be the same.
