Ratings, Rants and Raves: General Hospital DOMINATES, While Y&R Flatline in Key Demos

Well I'll be a rabbit's chopped off foot! Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo (Brenda) proved she's still got it this past week on General Hospital. Her previous return stint (2002-03) saw 800,000 viewers come back, now, the ratings deets are in and 417,000 total viewers were gained by GH the week of Feb. 21-25. (Source: Soap Opera Network) Hallelujah, praise Soap Jesus and tell Tori Spelling don't nobody wanna watch her over their morning bagel, 'cause soaps they are 'a saved! Okay, not quite, but it sure felt good to type that.

The wedding storyline for one of daytime's most popular couples of all time, Brenda and Sonny (Maurice Benard), coupled with all the buzz surrounding the return of Franco (James Franco), helped GH go up a staggering four-tenths of a ratings point in households!!! I haven't seen this kind of an increase in a long, long time.  GH also went up two-tenths of a point among women 18-49 and one-tenth of a point among women 18-34. Okay, Guza, OUT-FREAKING-STANDING!!!!!!! Now how are you gonna convince La Giovinazzo to stay? Personally, I think someone should give Laura Wright a pay increase. While Brenda and Sonny's magic is still apparent at times, Carly brings the FIYA day in/day out. Just sayin…

Elsewhere on the Mouse House dial, One Life to Live went up an impressive 187,000 total viewers over the previous week. OLTL gained two-tenths of a point in households, and one-tenth of a point among women 18-49 and women 18-34 respectively. Looks like all the shenanigans those lusty Buchanan twins and their beaux are pulling are paying off for Llanview!

All My Children showed impressive numbers as well the week in question. AMC went up 155,000 total viewers, and inched up one-tenth of a ratings point in households and among women 18-49. The news wasn't so great among women 18-34, as the sudser tied it's all-time low in that demo for the second straight week. AMC is becoming more enjoyable for me by the day. I am loving Kendall (Alicia Minshew) trying to put together the pieces of Zach's (Thorsten Kaye) death. I can't wait for Griffin (Jordi Vilasuso) to provide her heart with one helluva horizontal stress test! Or they could do it froggy style if he would prefer; I ain't particular, and neither is Kendall…

Speaking of low down, dirty positions, CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless didn't have such a hot week. While Y&R only lost a paltry 18,000 total viewers and held steady in households, the soap hit an all-time low in viewership for women 18-49. Y&R also tied their all-time low in the demo for W18-49, and hit a new all-time low among women 18-34. If there's one thing soap insiders have drilled into my head, it's that all Madison Avenue cares about is demos, so it looks to me like Maria Arena Bell has some serious 'splainin' to do!

Story-wise, I am enjoying Y&R again, go figure! The arbitration has been soapy goodness, corporate drama at it's best, and the Neil/Sofia (Kristoff St. John and Julia Pace Mitchell) pairing has me intrigued. I guess viewers are ticked about Cane's (Daniel Goddard) death though.

I have to admit, killing Cane—if he's really dead, 'cause I ain't convinced—was a dumb move. The Cane and Lily (Christel Khalil) pairing may not be my cup of rubbing alcohol, but they are very popular in the very demos Y&R is currently hurting in.

I am actually enjoying Lily reconnecting with Daniel (Michael Graziadei). Lily and Daniel were 10 times the couple Cane and Lily have been. I would have liked to have seen Cane paired with a woman his own age, like Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) or Cricket (Lauralee Bell), not that I mind May/December pairings, hello Mac and Rachel fan here, but Khalil still looks so young and untouched that it's always sorta skeeved me out to see her with a man who was alive when Nixon was in the White House.

Y&R's sister sudser, The Bold and the Beautiful went up 136,000 total viewers over the week. B&B also went up one-tenth of a point in households, yet tied it's all-time low rating among women 18-49. B&B was also dead last in total viewers 18-49 and hit a new low in that ranking. Things weren't much better for Brad Bell among women 18-34, as B&B tied their all-time low in that demo for the third straight week. Jinkies!

Like Y&R, B&B is enjoyable right now on the story tip, in my opinion. Thomas (Adam Gregory) and Dayzee (Kristolyn Lloyd) are cute, although I was sure hoping he would mount Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and ride her across the beaches of Malibu. I get Dollar Bill's (Don Diamont) murderous rage at Amber (Adrienne Frantz), though I do wish he would remember she's got a future SORAS victim on board!

I say it's high-time for a visit from Crazy Nurse Sheila (Kimberlin Brown); that would spike B&B's numbers for sure! Who cares if she died on Y&R? I'm sure Brad can undo Lynn Marie Latham and his sister-in-law's ridonkulous storytelling for one of daytime's best villains some how. Though Brad, no more Militia Leader Sheila….

Seriously, the Bells really have to figure out how to attract more eyeballs in their key demos, or at least try to convince the advertising industry that people still buy soap, tissue and vaginal cream after the age of 49. While they're at it, why not look at all the men who watch these shows and figure out a way to monetize those eyeballs? I know, I know, women buy the majority of consumer goods for the home, but not all of us live in homes with women folk, so we have to buy our own itch cream!

Why not partner with Procter & Gamble's Old Spice brand to do viral spots, TV, web and print commercials featuring Michael MuhneyJoshua MorrowAdam Gregory, Brandon Beemer, Scott Clifton and Don Diamont alongside Isaiah Mustafa? Better yet, Y&R or B&B could cast him in a cameo spot. Forget that weirdo pilot from The Bachelor, the Old Spice guy would kill on a soap! Maybe he could be Sofia's brother, a famous male model, who comes to Genoa City for a visit and ends up on the cover of Restless Style, all lathered up between Sharon (Sharon Case) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford)? Just throwin' out ideas!

NBC's Days of Our Lives went up 187,000 total viewers over the previous week. DAYS went up two-tenths of a point in households and among women 18-49. The sudser also boasted a one-tenth of a point gain among women 18-34. I've made no secret I find DAYS abominable these days. In fact, as of this week, I have stopped watching it all together. I refuse to waste valuable brain cells as I race through my 30's on another effing, dumbass doppelganger storyline when I could be watching Shameless on Showtime.

Once Rafe's (Galen Gering) clone is gone I will tune back in. Memo to Ken Corday: You keep saying you want to get back to the basics of family drama. Please prove it. Fire Dena Higley and hire someone who doesn't write to the dumbest common denominator. Salutations!

    I can’t say it enough, but Kudos to GH again and again.
    I watch Y&R mostly, but GH has been putting out some interesting stuff recently.
    They have totally taken me off Y&R and their crappy stories. Really now, do I need to watch a geriatric everyday dominate my screen? With no disrespect to the older audience but seriously enough is enough already.

    Jamey- I LOVE u like a play cousin, but I think it is unfair to give all the credit to VG for GHs bump, ol’ girl has been back for months! IMHO it was a perfect storm of the wedding/franco press that got them the ratings.

    When I don’t walk down memory lane, I can really enjoy the current GH. I have tried really hard to just watch the current GH and not compare it to the Labine/Riche era, which I absolutely loved. I am happy that GH went up in the ratings and I don’t deny Vanessa and Maurice still have chemistry after all these years. I wish the Balken story was more interesting to me, but so far it just has been okay. I do agree that Laura Wright continues to knock the ball out of the park. She is the perfect example of the kind of actress who deserves to be in daytime. She loves the genre, having started as Ally Rescott on “Loving” all those years ago, and doesn’t see it as a stepping stone or a way to make some quick cash. Laura’s Carly is my favorite of all the previous Carly’s.

    I think it was the wedding/fiasco/combo/family too, along with the inclusion of the majority of the cast… certainly not all those wasted months of VMG’s giggle that helped the ratings boost. I love her like a sista from another mista, but, yeah. That said, since women love what that entire week was all about, certainly not surprised we saw a bump in the demo’s. Like I said, all dread all the time is NOT what the core audience is looking for. We want love, laughter, family, female friendship, and a little dread mixed in, as it is natural, and that is exactly what that week gave us: a lovely wedding, boosted by drama of a maybe baby–not to mention a well-needed Dante slugging!–family, friendship, lies exposed… followed by a limo blowing up in front of 5 people. :LOL:

    OLTL needs to feature the vets ALWAYS to keep their ratings afloat, if yesterday’s episode is any indication. Nuff said. The crap with the teens is not Must See TV by any means. They are not, I repeat, NOT lead characters on this show; many of them are just all around boring–save for Matthew who’s bound to turn out more like Uncle Clint, than Daddy Bo–and should never be mistaken as anything but filler. It’s not a teen hour about kids needing to get it when they can from anyone willing to give it when they want it. I’ve got Gossip Girl for that.

    I’ve read elsewhere that the Lane fans are hella pissed at MAB’s Mobley, thus, they tuned out for Cane’s death and won’t be satisfied till/if/when/whatever he comes back. That said, I actually–shock–liked Lily and Daniel too their first time around and wouldn’t begrudge a round two. He made her somewhat tolerable for me and less annoying, and that’s saying something since she grates my nerves 99.9% of the time. It also gives her something to do other than have, uh, ‘visions’ of Cane in the fog in a cemetery, no less. Remind me to never be buried there. I couldn’t remember if I was watching Y&R or a GooseBumps/Are You Afraid of the Dark mash mix that day.

    Days is a total shytefest. Nuff said.

    You are probably thinking much younger, but I would like some more pre- geriatrics. I’ve been watching since I was a kid so I love some of the older players, but they do over do it. Do we really need Tucker and Jeffery? Those guys are in their 60s! Brad and Cane were much better. I would love a few 40 year old men. I’m a cougar with Nick but Jack’s way too old for me. I’d rather see Phyllis, Ashley, and Diane with younger men too.

    Keep Colin though. I used to dream I was Holly as a young girl and Robert Scorpio is still all that. I can’t get over him being paired w/Jill.Who would have thought it. What fun!

    While Shelia would give B&B a much needed shot in the arm, it won’t really solve problems. This show has so lost focus. First of all, the dialogue on B&B is atrocious and has been for some time. Second, why is Brad never writing for Eric & Stephanie’s other children? Thorne & Felicia should both be major characters on this show & involved in the all happenings going on Forrester, etc, but it’s like they don’t even exist anymore. Viewers actually care about them, yet Brad refuses to write for them.

    Then there’s the Jackie M clan, they all bore me & terrible “replacement” for Spectra Fashions. One of the best parts of the show was the fued between Stephanie & Sally Spectra and see Forrester Creations vs Spectra Fashions. There is no big fashion rivalry on this show. Why isn’t Jackie M and Forrester competing against each other to try and take the other down? Beat each other for the next “great hit”? Instead the two fashion houses act like best friends. Where’s the drama in that?

    And Brad’s recent PSA/social issue trip he’s on, okay, I think it’s great Brad wants to tackle some of those issues, but he’s going WAY over board. People don’t watch B&B to be lectured about homeless people months on end, they watch cause they want to see the rich snobby Forresters get knocked down a few pegs, then rise back up. Brad needs to start spending as much effort on the rest of the show as he did with that kick butt new opening.

    “Shameless”! Now that is some good soap. While MTV has that utter abortion that is the US version of “Skins”, “Shameless” has passed the test of US adaptations of overseas shows. Favorite Showtime series since “Dexter”.

    Oh yeah, the stories. Good for GH. IF anything this proves that all ppl wanted to see was their beloved Brenda (aka Cackles!) in good story, even if it is for a brief moment of time and that wedding did provide that.

    As always great ratings article, Jamey!!!!! Great to see ALL the soaps went up this past week.

    But I am with you regarding Days, Jamey!!! Seeing Galen Gering as much as I love him (Rafe) going back and forth with accents with the real and old Rafe is wayyy too much.
    And the Taylor switheroo with two former GHers,too much. Dena must have something on Gary and Ken,because the fact that she still has a job is maddening.

    As for the ABC soaps,

    AMC, again I know people don’t like Rylee, I don’t either, but Scott and Madison are becoming enjoyable, I hope Ricky turns out to be an undercover agent or cop, because I really like him. I am glad they’re finally giving nuBianca something to do, but I think it’s just lazy that they didn’t hire someone to play Reese,even if it’s only for a few weeks. Liking nuMarissa, Sarah Glendening everyday. Can’t wait until we see all the Hubbards again next week.

    OLTL,
    I agree the whole let’s make it like Gossip Girl kind of dea; is not going to work. It has done so well providing a great mix of vets, young adults, and teens. Don’t make it all about the teens. And can we get rid of Tess, it’s getting really old.

    GH,
    I am with you, GHfan4now I couldn’t have said it better, I also think it’s because of the wedding, and the chaos afterwards, and the fact that it involved most of the cast, that’s why the ratings went up. THe lead up was good, but the aftermath has been same old same old. Laura Wright has been a powerhouse, and she better be on the final Emmy nominations list.

    B & B used to be one of my favorite soaps. Now I pretty much delete the shows I record and don’t even bother watching. I hate the lecturing do-gooder crap about the homeless and smoking. BORING! As for Y & R it is heading in the same direction for me not watching and doing more deleting. I think most of the pairings on there are creepy and uninteresting. Chloe and Kevin? I don’t care what they do, Adam is not redeemable. Basically both soaps do the same stupid stuff over and over again. Who was really surprised Rider showed up again. Wow, what a novel idea. I guess Daisy is not far behind – again. Hooray for GH that keeps my interest and my finger off the fast forward button or worse, delete.

    I think Brenda is great on GH and has made every one interact and really brng acting home. All abc soaps have been great – and pay attention to All My Children – That story with Tad and Cara is sooooo good and slowly but surely we may be seeing vintage amc – dont ever give up friends on our soaps – we dont want to wind up like Guiding Light Fans

    Jamey,

    Despite trying for MONTHS to find out what the “big deal is” with everyone’s Brenda love, I just don’t share your TREMENDOUS unconditional love of Vanessa Marcil or Brenda. She’s ALRIGHT to me, but I still don’t think she has the power to turn water into wine or walk on water. Sorry. But you are absolutely right about Laura!!! She’s always FIYAH and the true star of GH for me. Carly is a show-eater, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!!! And I wish that they would do a Sonny, Jason, Brenda triangle……that might be interesting. Vanessa seems to shine the most in her scenes with Steve Burton, especially when they are bantering back and forth, but I do see chemistry there.

    I also am finding it hard to invest in Neil and Sofia as a couple. Their chemistry doesn’t seem organic. My nature will always lead me to compare EVERY female love interest of Neil’s to Drucilla, but I truly did try to give this couple a chance b/c I love seeing happy powerful Black couples thrive onscreen, but I don’t see them as the next big supercouple.

    Daniel and Lily are a huge improvement over Cane and Lily, I agree, but Christel Khalil is just so BLAHHHHHHHHH for me that I don’t think she’s capable of “popping” with any male love interest. She’s just as interesting as a stale soda cracker, with half the flavor. She does have her moments where she does good work, but she’s just not my cup of tea as an actress. And I have tried to support her as well b/c soaps need all the black folks they can get on the frontburner. But again, no dice…………

    Can’t comment much on B&B and DAYS since I rarely watch those shows.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Yep that was just great soap opera! I just liked Darlene’s Sally she’s from my hometown so I always had a soft spot for her because of that…
    Jackie M was like that for awhile but with Amber stealing the creations I thought it would catapult that feud….also with Whip photographing Brooke/Thomas would spur something as well…then it flatlined into nothingness..I still like B/B though.
    Yeah Cane and Lily fans are not happy campers neither are fans of Daniel Goddard who surprisingly to me has a strong fanbase or at least they are quite vocal esp on the Sony forum. I’m his fan so I was hoping for more with the three Aussies for awhile: Blake/Colin/Cane that was short and sweet. I just don’t want another soap to die with just six on the table I’m really rooting for all of them…I loathe ABC soaps but I still give them my ratings; I just don’t watch them that’s pretty much all they want anyway from us veteran viewers.
    I wish Becky influenced that jump but I don’t think so..especially since most of her fans are more concerned with the hatefest on her character they are more into better writing for her what is the use of her coming back if they are still writing against her and giving all the material to the mens.
    I am loving OLTL! It is important, in my opinion, to tell umbrella stories and stories for all ages. I think OLTL is the best soap around right now.
    DOOL’s is so wishy washy these days. The writing is uneven. Some days there are some really strong scenes and other days it is as if the show is being written by a child. This is the soap I have watched the longest, and so I won’t abandon it, but I urge the writers to either improve or I hope Tomlin/Corday will hire someone new.
    GH needs to work on how to feature all the characters on a more regular basis. Part of the problem is the size of the cast. It is being written better.
    B&B has a pretty good cast right now. The stories aren’t bad either.
    Y&R just seems kinda ‘there’- not bad or good.
    AMC is better. There is a lot I like about the soap, but I am pretty much a new viewer. I don’t need to see the vets of this soap to enjoy it, and I know most of the longtime fans really wish they would see their vets more. I do like Tad/Cara. I also like JR, Marissa, Scott, & Madison.
    Out of all of Neil’s love interest which one did you think worked or had a chance storywise/chemistry wise? Just curious, IA that Sophia came out of nowhere for me I thought they would kiss since the gravy buildup and all that but I didn’t expect them to shag.
    I don’t think it was Vanessa that brought viewers for this rating week. I think it was the combination of the Sonny/Brenda wedding as well as the inclusion of the rest of the cast, along with Franco. Please do not extend Vanessa’s stay any longer than necessary. I watched her video on Access Hollywood and she stated her time at GH is coming to an end, and they were trying to dictate her story accordingly. From the way it looks, the timeframe is pretty soon and I wonder if she will actually complete the full year of her contract. Please just let her move right on along with her future plans and don’t keep her on GH. I definately enjoyed GH for this week as well as this currect week.
    I totally agree with ghfan4-now . This was a great week for gh not because of solely brenda but because we got action, drama, love/romance, smackdowns, secrets revealed and family all while seeing characters we love,esp. the ones that are sorely underused. This week featured all of the characters I love Alexis, Jax, carly, brenda, Sonny, Kristina, Michael, abby, molly, morgan, sam, Jason, Tracy, Edward, Luke, scrubs, we even got some Johnny and Lulu. I cant ask for anything more than that. And I loved at the end of the week the big discussions on fb for gh were team brenda vs. team carly and OMG Sam cant be dead. If tptb would only realize that the audience of women loves to root for their girls.
Jamey, isn’t this the week of RH’s unfiring? Could some of those more than 400,000 people have tuned back in for Mrs. Saucedo? Monday’s number was particularly big and I know that’s the day I returned GH to my DVR.
I think it’s a combination of Franco’s return, Brenson’s wedding, and RH’s unfiring news, plus how the whole cast was integrated during the whole week. It was a great week. Good job, GH.
    Y&R has been kind of sucking, IMO. I have never hated this many couples before. I thought the law suite storyline was interesting, but the ending has kind of sucked with the way they have been drawing it out. Y&R earned those ratings, IMO.
    Not a regular view of GH, but that show is in much better shape than Y&R. I too was hoping this would be the end for Brenda.
    I LOVE OLTL. That show is great and I am glad for it.
    Oy vey GH & their ratings coo. I can’t say that I’m happy about their ratings spike, cause I’m not. It’s not my soap anymore, but I will say the wedding hype overkill on not just the regular ABC channel but also Lifetime & ABC Family helped I’m sure. The one thing that GH has been consistently good at over the years is reveals & stunts at sweeps time. And most usually around that time GH has ratings increases. And usually during that time GH uses the majority of their cast like they did with the wedding. So, I am not surprised they had a ratings boost. I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again if OLTL could get just half the promotion & support that GH does then I wonder what their ratings would look like, cause overall OL is the best at what it does consistently. However, if OL did get all of that support then that would mean more of Frons’s meddling, so that’s like a double edged sword. Hmm…..
    As for Y&R, their are some days when it’s game on for me & others when I’m like OK. They didn’t really have a “splashy” sweeps this time around & they’ve tying up a few loose ends lately. So, Idk about their ratings plummet. I will in no way attribute that to Cane/DG, cause I doubt he has the fan base as big as Becky does, but whatever. Y&R’s ratings these past weeks is really kind of befuddling cause they had amazing ratings just a few weeks ago. Who knows, I mean people were snowed in so I’m sure they watched more TV. Ratings are so fickle anyway.
    I love, I love, I love OL so I’m glad they went up from last week being dead last.
    GH was really great that week! I want them to learn something from that, lol!
    Now, in regards to the other ABC sudser, OLTL, I’ve read that more former viewers have tuned back in as of late to see what the hell the deal is with this whole Todd vs. Todd thing. That’s been a big draw since the big wedding reveal, and most folks are sticking around because of the quality of the show. Because like others, I’m loving it to bits… I just want less pining and ‘I wanna have sex but don’t know where, or wait, my dad will kill you, who cares, let’s go have sex behind a bush’ from the teen set. :bigsmile:
    So glad they pushed B&B out of that Number 2 spot, B&B is such a joke of a soap.
    And alstonboy, I dont EVER want to see a Jason/Brenda/Sonny triangle. LOL
    Other than my beloved Drucilla, :) :) I would have to say that I have enjoyed him with Ashley the best. Of course, they weren’t really THAT great of a couple, and I feel that they put them together out of LAZINESS more than anything else (hey, we have two single people on the canvas, let’s throw them together and see what happens!). I love it when soaps take a chance on interracial couples, but Ashley has better chemistry with Tucker, so I understand why they got broken up!!!
    I also kinda enjoyed him with Karen/Nia Peeples, but that went nowhere, and they wrote Karen as such a tremendous bore that it really didn’t matter in the end!!!
    OLTL needs to feature the vets ALWAYS to keep their ratings afloat, if yesterday’s episode is any indication. Nuff said. The crap with the teens is not Must See TV by any means. They are not, I repeat, NOT lead characters on this show; many of them are just all around boring–save for Matthew who’s bound to turn out more like Uncle Clint, than Daddy Bo–and should never be mistaken as anything but filler. It’s not a teen hour about kids needing to get it when they can from anyone willing to give it when they want it. I’ve got Gossip Girl for that.
The teens are boring but forgettable. It’s Rex, Todd, John, Kelly, Ford, Jessica and the Aubrey/Cutter/Joey crap I think also drags the show down.
    The stories are weak, plot-driven, and revolve around extremely unpleasant people, usually men, men who treat women like trash are are then lauded by most of the town. I don’t want to see women humiliating themselves while John mopes and spits, or see Viki cry and beg Ford.
    There’s also never any major followthrough.
    As for GH, they have had these types of increases before when something goes boom, and then there’s the wedding. Good for them. I can’t give any credit to Franco, who caused a ratings drop in his other appearances. I doubt people somehow tuned in for him now.
    Regarding GH ratings:
    I am big fan of the soap genre. I desperately want to see it survive and thrive. But I believe in giving credit where credit is due. The fact of the matter is…GH SAW A HUGE RATINGS BOOST PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF THE ENORMOUS PROMO PUSH THROUGHOUT (and leading up to) THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 21ST!!!! That is the truth of it!
    I could not BELIEVE how much promo was given to that week of shows!! A friend of mine and I couldn’t help but remark to each other how we were ANNOYED and befuddled by the amount of CONSTANT, CONSTANT promo there was… As I was watching GH last week, there was promo for this “big event” before, DURING, AND after the episodes I was already watching!!! The same promo ran during the episode of OLTL I was watching. Overkill. Surely SOME of that promo time could have gone to promote OLTL or even AMC. I tuned into the E Channel in prime time and there it was again…the same GH Sonny/Brenda promo that’d been airing all day, every day. I was watching TV Land Channel in the evening as well, and there was the GH promo again!!! I can’t recall ever seeing so much advertising going toward one daytime show. I believe that ANY show that is given THAT MUCH PUSH is going to see their numbers increase.
    What also made me feel manipulated about the GH promo was that EVERY DAY last week, they ran an add that said…”tune in to general hospital TODAY for the episode/event you CAN’T MISS!”, or something along those lines. And there I was, just like most everyone else, tuning in every day…at first…(because of the big promo push) thinking that was THE DAY that something big was supposed to happen. I felt manipulated…Especially when it turns out that the BIG EVENT was yet ANOTHER GH explosion, in which the jeopardy isn’t even real…as we all know none of the core characters are going anywhere, or are in any REAL danger…because they’ll all be fine and up to business as usual in a couple weeks… Until the next “event”…(just look at Sam: survives a limo blowing up with her in it, loses her hearing for a couple days…now looks like she’ll be out of the hospital and up to the same old same old very shortly). I have a very hard time investing in stories like this where you KNOW the jeopardy isn’t real, and the character will end up just fine. Give me EMOTIONAL jeopardy over this type B.S. anyday. For example, on OLTL I have NO IDEA how things will end up for most of those characters, given the recent turbulation and drama that blew up their lives in February…and I LOVE THAT!! That’s what makes me want to tune in to see what’ll happen! That’s what make me invest.
    Anyway…I just WISH that a show like OLTL was given even half the promo push that GH gets for their “same old same old” storytelling, where all the characters anybody really cares about end up just fine in a few weeks…until the next “stunt”. I’ve been upset about this with GH’s way of storytelling for quite some time.
    BTW…I like Vanessa Marcil, but she’s been there for months already. I don’t think people can claim that she’s the reason the show jumped four-tenths last week in ratings. It was CLEARLY all the tremendous promotional push given to the show…(ANY show given that much push will see numbers go up). And IMO, it is unfair of ABC to SO heavily push one of it’s shows, without showing the same kind of support to the others when they need it, or when they have big story happening. OLTL especially (IMO) really DESERVES big support. At times, that show is EXTREMELY engaging…
Surely SOME of that promo time could have gone to promote OLTL or even AMC.
True. Unfortunately, OLTL has been the red-headed stepchild of ABC for years. Frons does not give one ounce of crap about that show which is why word of mouth is truly the only thing that has been keeping it somewhat afloat overtime. The wedding fiasco/DNA switch reveal, is this Todd, is THAT Todd, etc. has obviously helped as well. There have been promos here and there, mainly regarding Tess and Ford, but I’ve been kicked in the head with promo after promo after promo of Kendal looking for the truth about Zack, as well as all things Sonny/Brenda since the explosion. OLTL, as usual, gets the shaft. GH is his favorite, with AMC falling next in line. OLTL is a default soap for Frons.
    That said, I don’t want to sound offensive to anyone, but in regards to GH, I’m starting to have a few ‘No Shyte Sherlock’ moments. It’s been stated over and over again in this thread and others about the ratings but the problem for TPTB will be whether or not GH can sustain that and unfortunately, until the next big event happens, and it WILL happen folks, I doubt they will because the show will once again go back to focusing on all things Mob related and dread, dread, dread 24/5. It already has. The next disaster to strike, reportedly happening sometime later this month, will either spike the ratings as well, or they’ll drop faster than a stone in water. Right now, people are pretty mixed on the probable outcome, with most leaning negative, stating they will refuse to watch the show IF various spoilers come to pass.
    So I will continue to praise the spike in regards to the week the ratings went up for GH until the shyte hit’s the fan again, and I have no doubt in my mind and heart that it WILL. And I’ll surely go back to bytching with the regular GH crowd in Perkie’s Observations. But I figure I’ve shyte on the show long enough in the last few months to finally cut it some slack for at least a day or two. Bout time I had something nice to say about a show I’ve been watching since I was 7 years old anyhow.
    GHfan-4now – In the new ratings just out “The View” was in the top of the daytime shows along with GH and OLTL and “The Price Is Right” (a show I haven’t watched in decades) actually came in higher than AMC which was last or next to last. The ratings printed here don’t show other daytime shows but another site had a broader list. I’d say that doesn’t bode well for AMC which has become a total bore.
    Wow. Now, THAT speaks volumes about the show these days, does it not Sassy??? You’re right, AMC being dead last doesn’t bode well in the least for that show, especially given the ‘beat you over the head’ Kendal promotions that they have been putting out as of late. Heck, the show was even featured on Oprah! She had Jessie, Angie, Tad, Erica, and all of her husbands. That was the most of the lot featured, when GH only had Luke and Laura and OLTL had no one.
    I saw that episode of Oprah and it was like a huge commercial for AMC. But it didn’t matter. The writing is terrible and the focus of the show being mostly on Erica, Kendall and Ryle is killing it. So unless TPTB really step up their game and do some major changes pretty quickly, I suspect if ABC/Disney really does decide to cut a show next year it will be AMC. And that would be very sad. I for one don’t want or need to watch another silly game show or a copycat talk show!
    As a kendall fan I have to disagree. Its not which characters are being focused on, its the stupidity of the storylines they are writing. As bad as the kendall storyline is, at least I am mildly interested in that. I have ZERO interest in the tad/cara/jake/amanda stuff…they all come off awful IMHO from what little Ive seen of it. I love jessie and angie but the storyline is a YAWN. I couldnt bear to watch the way they wrote annie off, but if the supporting stories had been better I could have swallowed it. Erica dating a mountain man…OMG this character is the epitome of glamor. I want to see her dancing in a ballroom in hungaria or making love on a pool table, not romancing over a can of uncooked baked beans and ham. Its just a royal mess.
    OK I don’t usually quote lengthy posts, but I had to quote this one. This is EXACTLY what I was trying to say in my prior post! It’s like you totally read my mind & I absolutely agree. Every stinking time I watched Lifetime there was that GH Sonny/Brenda promo, or ABC Family. And I was left thinking what in the world, & WHY for the love can’t OLTL get that kind of promotion? Just once would be nice, but then that would mean tons of Frons & his constant meddling too (total double edged sword, but at least Ron & Frank work around him). So, I’m absolutely NOT shocked GH got ratings increases. And I totally, whole-heartedly agree with your other OLTL comments! I find it emotionally connecting & engaging as well.
    I came back to GH for the wedding and I’m glad I did.I would have watched more consistantly if Brenda’s return focused more on her relationship with Sonny and less on the Balkan bs. Despite my love for many characters, I just can’t get excited enough to watch on a daily basis. After Vanessa leaves, I’m out. One surprising thing has happened to me, I’ve discovered B&B – it’s the only soap that I’ve never watched. Now I remember why I loved Don Diamont, he rocks as Bill. I like the Thomas and Dayzee story but that thing with Thomas and Brook made my skin crawl. However Bill Bell shouldn’t be afraid to mention that Dayzee is Black and stop tip toeing the interracial aspect of the story. The best part of B&B is watching it online, 18 minutes is just enough time to devote to a soap for me.
    I’m a Kendal fan too, but I just can’t find myself as interested in the storyline as I should be. Adding State Farm guy Eddie Matos is no help. No offense to the actor, but I didn’t care for him on Port Charles either. And the other storylines in general are just so badly written. It’s just unfortunate when your faves are forced to turn such dreadful shyte into sugar. The Tad/Cara mess is a fine example. I love Tad. I love Lindsay Hartley. This storyline is totally and completely ridonk to the point that I find myself rolling my eyes and switching channels every time one of them hit’s the screen. AMC has been off the radar for quite sometime, but I try to tune into SoapNet every now and then. No dice. In the end, I just can’t ever bring myself to watch an entire episode without wanting to chuck something at the T.V. So I don’t anymore.
    It’s all about what floats our boat.
    I loved GH last week because I thought it was well written and less predictable than normal. They lost me minutes into Monday’s episode and I didn’t pick it back up until Friday which got my interest again as soon as Shawn walked into Carly’s door. I think a Carly/Shawn pairing will be the best inter-racial paring in the history of soaps ever because it will make natural sense. Really looking forward to this! Many of the ones I’ve seen over the years seemed forced as if if to say “Look at how progressive and contemporary WE are.” Not this one. Shoot, Carly got it so going on (even on the days when she annoys me) I won’t be hating on her for getting that fine brother man. lol.
    Y&R is always good to me with some plots more stale than others. This Cane thing is the one thing I currently just can’t stand! Kill him off and be done with him or don’t kill him off and make him and Lily interesting. (Yeah, I know that’s a reach.) I like the idea of Sophia being preggers by Neil and him finally getting a bio-baby since he is an awesome father and grandfather.
    AMC. Dull, dull, dull. Other than NuOldNuScott, dull. Well, and seeing that tasty Dr. Castillo in non-Kendall scenes. But other than that, dull, I say!
    This week’s ratings don’t look at the whole picture for AMC. In a new press release from ABC it stated the top 5 programs for the month of Feb. GH and OLTL made the list but AMC did not. The Price is Right and The View beat AMC. I going to take a stab in the dark and guess AMC didn’t even make the top 10 otherwise ABC would have done a top 10 list not top 5. It was Sweeps and AMC couldn’t beat The Price is Right.
    I personally think AMC is as bad as it ever has been. The writing is just awful. The storylines are recycled and boring. Too much attention is being given to the new characters.
    As a business person I would pull the plug on AMC.
    Looking back on this article shows that GH made a HUGE mistake letting Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo go and not capitalizing on Sonny and Brenda’s huge fanbase after their wedding. All that promotion was worth it and brought viewers back and held them for a few weeks until they again wrote ridiculous stuff for VMG and S&B.
    Sorry but months of Laura Wright barking her lines obnoxiously and a laughably bad new/old “romance”for Sonny haven’t brought in ratings…they are tanking! It shows how horribly this show treats its vets like VMG, JJ, KMc, IR when we want them back. Bring VMG back with a good storyline and get rid of Laura Wright and the horrible Kelly Sullivan. They are the ones ruining GH! Bring back VMG and all the vets to end GH properly!
