General Hospital's Sean Blakemore Placed on Contract!

Soap Opera Digest is reporting General Hospital has placed Sean Blakemore (Shawn) on contract. I wonder if he will get to do more with Carly's (Laura Wright) body than guard it?

So far I love Shawn. Him and Laura Wright have so much chemistry. I think he'd be able to handle Carly more than Jax could.

Score one for diversity!! I don't want to play the race card, but as a black man, it feels kinda good to see another black man with TALENT get a contract. And since he has great chemistry with Laura Wright, we might even get an interracial pairing out of the deal, which daytime needs more of!!!

I think this is good news.

Now if they can just trim some of the fat, bring in some more vets and get rid of LISA, I will be a much happier camper!!! Smile Smile Smile Smile

Great news. I hope he gets with my Carlybabes.

Maybe he and Siobhan can split the contract money GH saved by reducing Sonia Eddy and Leslie Charleson to recurring, firing Tyler Christopher and not hiring Genie Francis. Maybe when VG exits, they can put Marty the front desk clerk at the Metro Court on contract too!

*I have nothing against Sean, I just hate what GH has become and how they treat their cast and audience.

I think him and Carly have chemistry, but in my heart I know that he's just going to be just yet another thug in Carly's life and we're going to lose IR. I think I'd have been much happier if they had brought him in as a different (nothing to do with the mob or mercenary lifestyle) character. He could've been a HOT doctor, and it could've been a nice romantic triangle between Liz and Carly.

I never understand GH's thought process with who they put on contract, who they drop to recurring status, and who they drop from the show.

I agree that the actor is good and has strong chemistry with Laura, though I have yet find an actor who Laura doesn't have chemistry and I have watched her since she was Ally on "Loving". However, do I see the character having long term potential? No.

I wish soaps would go back to smaller casts. It is more intimate that way.

Would they dare pair him with Carly knowing how the Middle American Soccer Moms feel about interracial romances? He is probably cheap in comparison to a lot of the vets.

Great. They can't come up with any story for Ingo Rademacher, Nancy Lee Grahn, John J. York, most of what's left of the Quartermaines and the Cassadines, they can barely come up with story for Jason Cook, fired Tyler Christopher, and yet they can come up with the money to put yet another newbie on contract, which probably means that the Screeching Banshee will be sucking up even more airtime than she already does. The only thing I want to see anyone do with Carly's body is to drop either a house or a bucket of water on it and watch it disappear forever.

I find it difficult to feel sorry for Tyler Christopher. I feel that he "technically" checked out of GH a LOONGGG time ago, actingwise. It seems that you are a fan of his, but I find him to be slightly arrogant, self-entitled and lazy. If he wanted to keep his job, he should have actually came to work and done his job----you know, ACTED???!!

BTW: I read in "Soap Opera Digest" that his house flooded and right now he's being forced to live in a hotel. I do empathize with him for that, but that's about it. I really hope that they recast!!!

I agree with all of that. But, I also think that he wouldn't have checked out long ago if TPTB would treat the entire cast fairly.

mipeony -- I agree, I would rather have Shawn as something other than a thug. I am partial to the veterans over the newbies, but I won't deny Sean Blakemore is good to look at (and listen to). I am relieved that he is a mature character. The teenyboppers and their story lines do not interest me.

GHvetfan--

I like and respect you, but I feel that there's simply no excuse for a soap actor to ever give less than 100%. These actors get paid a LOT of money, so I feel that an actor needs to just suck it up and do whatever the script tells them to do in a CONVINCING and powerful manner. Actors like Erika Slezak, Sharon Case, Anthony Geary and even the lovely Rebecca Herbst (who you seem to love! Smile Smile ) have always given 100%, regardless of how crappy the material they were given has been, and regardless of how crappy the casts have been treated overall. So Tyler should have stepped up to the plate and done the same. I just don't think he deserves a free pass, regardless of how the character was written.

Must.... remember... to... not take a drink of Dr Pepper before reading the posts on here! My poor computer screen (not to mention the weird bubbly feeling of pop coming out my nose) LOL! That was entirely too funny, and sums up nicely how I've been feeling about Carly for a while now.

I am all for diversity, but I'm not confident that GH knows how to integrate the diverse characters and actually utilize them.

I loved the start of Lanie and Epiphany's son, Stan, story but that was unceremoniously dropped. I'm really enjoying Dr. Terrell Jackson immensely, but now that Robin and Patrick are back together where does that leave him. I was looking forward to a triangle with him and Patrick vying for Robin. Throw Lisa and Johnny into the mix and that would be interesting.

As new characters, I have yet to latch onto Sean or See-Oh-Bahn.

What I never quite understand is getting vets or favorites off contract and then getting newbies onto contract almost immediately. I understand the need to seed story with new characters, but it's always done so quickly. Is there a use it or lose it component to the budget process? I'd rather GH bank some money and then use it wisely down the line.

alstonboy - Like I said, I totally agree!! He shouldn't have checked out. He is totally to blame for his behavior. I just really have to blame the show runners for their behavior as well. I like this new guy. I am sure he is a great actor. I am happy for him. I liked him on Bones. I just really long for GH to be good and it won't as long as TPTB have their heads so far up their arses. They have so much talent at their fingertips that they are mistreating while gathering newbies. It doesn't make a lick of good business sense.

And, I respect you too.

I am African-American so of course I am all for diversity but I have the feeling that it is precisely why this guy is getting a contract, because of his skin color and because he is hot.

I am fed up of newbies. FED UP.
They cannot even write for the existing cast, they are firing Tyler (I am sorry, he was perhaps not as "present" while acting lately but look at the crap he had to play and out of respect for his 11 years on the show, I thought firing him was just disgusting, he was one of the last Cassadine for god's sake!) and now we are supposed to be all OK with this thug (who helped the Balkan organize Brenda's kidnapping, had no problem to beat Johnny to death and gloating about it to Theo...) that has suddenly become trustful enough for Jason that he will ask him to protect Carly? You must be kidding me!

Sorry but I will NOT root for that Carly/Shawn pairing especially if it means that Ingo is out!
They won't get me to swallow this just because I should be happy that after Justus, Guza is FINALLY adding some color to his cast! I find it more insulting than anything honestly (at least we have Jess and Angie on AMC!).
Shawn is gonna be the black stallion of Amazon Carly for a few months and then what? He will be sacrificed to get a new "Who killed X" plot? Not working for me AT ALL.

If GH really has budget issues, stop putting newbies on contract again and again. Put them on recurring for at least a year and let's people start to really like the characters. Don't use the money saved by firing some fan favorites to immediately hire newbies. SAVE THE MONEY and keep people we love on the show. It is not as if GH had a limited cast! But as only 5 actors seem to be given some screentime (Sonny/Dante/Brenda/Carly and Jason), it for sure looks like it.

Focus on your cast. Use your vets. Look at what OLTL is doing! They are the example to follow! And they are under their budget!

BellaDonna...Somehow I missed your post. Glad I found it. Your words are so correct, and it bothers me to no end this is going on with the show. Things that the viewer wants, they are not getting.
You do realize, when they hire Shawn on contract, that is peanuts with money in comparison to what others are getting on contract?? And this is the beginning. 'Apparently' Jax has a BIG storyline coming up.
We will see.
Alexis is all but gone. I hope when they call in the Big Mac for a scene they reimburse him for his gas to get to the studio. He is in one scene a month. And that is a 5 minute scene.

GH-4now said it perfectly. Everyone needs to stop DVRing this show.
Or watching it live.
If you must watch do it on YTube. Do NOT give this show any more credit when it deserves none.

Loungta-EXCELLENT comments.

The only thing I respectfully disagree with, I don't think diversity is the main reason Sean was put on contract. YES he is good looking. YES he has chemistry with the other characters. YES he appears to be able to act. The main reason he is on contract is because it isn't costing GH as much if they were to keep Ingo on contract. Sean comes at a lower rate.
It's all about the money. Cash Cash

I always wonder if veteran cast members refuse to take a paycut, and so that is why they are let go, or are the never given the opportunity to take a cut?! I remember reading a few years ago when Suzanne Rogers (Maggie, DOOL) was let go as part of the Salem Murders and she stated that the decision could not have been made because of $$, because she was one of the lesser paid actors. I know Susan Lucci took a paycut with AMC and many of Y&R's 'big names' were forced to take cuts.

I support a network's decision to let someone go if they won't take the cut, considering the financial state of soaps, but I have a really hard time when they fire them or place them on recurring status without offering less money, but still a contract. They are never recurring- they are holiday day players.

When it comes to GH, if Ingo refused to take a paycut, then I understand why his guarantee with the soap is less. However, if his guarantee is less because the soap is trying to force him out, I am disappointed in GH.

I have been asking for years, if when the actors are asked to take pay cuts are the producers and writers, etc. also asked to take pay cuts?

I know it's all a union thing but when AMC, GH, Y&R, OLTL, GL actors were asked to take pay cuts (and I mean the big stars especially), did the Producers and Writers also take a pay cut?

Somehow I can't see Ellen Wheeler changing clothes in a car in broad daylight but asking Kim Zimmer to do it (in 2 degree weather) at a lesser fee.

The rumor is that Guza was offered a contract that was much much less than his current contract, so I think the answer is to a certain extent yes, most people were hit by the budget axe.

I am not defending anyone here, but I will say this...they had a story (unfortunately a stupid one) that they wanted to tell with Lisa. They wanted to give her someone as an ally/sounding board, so they bring on terrell. remember contracts have outs for the network every 13 weeks, so just because someone is "on contract" only means that the network wants to ensure their availability for 13 weeks. If they are recurring and someone offers them a better role they lose the actor altogether. Anyone remember cody...he got the same positive response from viewers that we most had to shawn, but then he got offered other parts after gh gave him some extra exposure and cody disappeared. Just because sean gets a contract doesnt mean that this is new money - they could have budgeted the equivalent for recurring when the first brought him on and seeing the response they wanted to lock him in, so that money went from column a to column b but it was already allocated. Plus he is so cheap, that I dont see his pay having anything to do with someone like tyler or ingo, but I COULD see tptb deciding they wanted to use him more and so they cut pif to recurring since salary wise thats like an even wash. Honestly, I think shawn is a more relevant useful character than pif JMHO and I am hoping that maybe the thinking is that Jason will add up sam being sick + Michael wanting to follow him in to the mob + not being a father to jake +wanting to be a father to baby JaSam and deciding all that equals a need to make a change - let shawn be the enforcer and let jason be more of an advisor like bernie or the guy that runs the legal side of the business

I used to think diversity was in fact Guza’s problem. That he just didn’t know how to write for people of color. Lainey, Stan, Epiphany, Kelly. Guess I'd have a shit chance in hell if I were on the show.

But actually, his problem is anyone who’s not part of the Trinity Mob… and Dante, apparently, who's just an extension. He doesn’t know how to write hospital stories, he doesn’t know how to write storylines that don’t include guns and dead children, he doesn't know how to write real families, he doesn't know how to write in the vets, even in dialog, he just doesn’t know WHAT the f*ck he’s doing. And he DOESNT CARE!

Shawn has chemistry w/Laura Wright. Plain and simple. LW said in an interview she is not playing it up, but sorry girlfriend, it's there. Middle America may have a problem with that. I say, they need to learn to effing deal and wake the hell up. We can't go backwards, only fowards. No more separate bathrooms and fountains. They need to DEAL. This country is a melting pot. If they can't handle Carly with Shawn, that's THEIR problem.

I want Jax on my screen, and that's saying ALOT, because I've NEVER really been a HUGE Jax fan, to say the least. HOWEVER, he is a long time cast member who deserves more than, dare I say it, a REDO of Sonny/Brenda/Jax! That ship SAILED! He's worth better than that being SUCKED back into Brenda's world like a VORTEX! At this point, I wanted him to spend some time with Elizabeth, so they could BOTH get some damn screen time. It makes no damn sense that Liz has not been involved in her own story. Jax could be spending time with Joss, off screen IF THEY MUST, since they never want to show him with his own child ONSCREEN, and he could go and visit Liz and they can talk about their children, and he can listen to Liz and be the SHOULDER SHE NEEDS! They have Stuck Lucky on Irish Island, and I was SOOO hoping for a Lucky/Liz reunion. Nik is going, so she has no one else left to play with. Dammit, give her JAX!

I don’t trust them bringing on someone new for her. They might be dead in a month, this time run over by a toddler in his toy TONKA TRUCK! GAH!

Congrats, Sean and well-deserved!!!

As an African-American woman, I'm all for diversity, too. He has great chemistry with LW and I have been saying this for a long time, I wish these shows would throw caution to the wind and write more interacial relationships. But I also agree that GH's problem is that Guza doesn't know or refuses to write non mob related storylines. I just hope we have a chance to learn more about Sean's back story.

Beer Beer BRAVO 4now....
However, what is going to be done about it? Nothing. It appears Guza has the upper hand with the writing and with the hiring/firing of staff. Apparently someone, somewhere puts alot into his style. Or he wouldn't be in the position he is in. WORKING.
Nothing will change at GH. This man is going nowhere. The writing stays the same. GH of the past is long ago. We aren't going to see Bobbie, Monica, Alexis, Big Mac, etc..like back in the day. They are done. Its time for newer and cheaper help. You get what you pay for...so good luck Guza...
Why am I watching this car-wreck when the entire country is commenting on the show. Isn't anyone embarrassed over there by the shyt they put out? Puzzled
Or articles that are literally laughing at them?? Laughing out loud

I am glad that Sean is on contract. GH needs to add to their diversity. If only Sonya Eddy did not have to be sacrificied for it. Because in my opinion it was her position instead of Ingo.
I agree with your beginning comment Ghfan-4now. LW is an actress and a soap actress at that needs to realize pairings could change and should always be open for whomever she is paired with, instead of "not playing it up" at all.
I hope that their is in inclusion of Maya's little sister Zoe as a character, somewhere down the road. It was mentioned that her character would be a love interest for Michael. Abby realistically, is just a fling for Micheal. I don't see this becoming a great romance between the two. But with Maya's character on shaky ground who knows.

Can GH just work on adding Sean to the opening credits. So sorry this sounds shallow, but can they do a scene where he takes his shirt off fully as soon as possible. Smile
