The Chew Co-Host Mario Batali on Soaps: “It Wasn’t Like I Voted ‘Em Out”

Mario Batali, one of the co-hosts of The Chew, the sharply-named (snort) cooking chatfest set to replace beloved daytime sudser All My Children this September was asked by TMZ to share his thoughts on replacing a soap opera. After quipping, "It wasn't like I voted 'em out," Batali went on to say he didn't want to see anyone out of a job. To borrow from SNL's Church Lady, well isn't that special?  To watch the clip go to TMZ.

Hmmm…right. You look like you should host a cooking talk show. Its not your fault that Daytime’s biggest dummy decided to air your show and not decades long soaps. How about you get Frons to drop your show and give him reason to bring back AMC. I am sure Erica Kane is waiting for you in dead tv show heaven to send you between heaven and hell (what Agnes Nixon was going to name OLTL.)

And THIS is what they want us to watch. No thank you! Look at this guy. We get this instead of Jordi Vilasuso. This is not an even trade. I would rather watch paint dry.

I was thinking of giving the replacement shows a chance if I heard they were good. As of typing this comment, I can’t imagine myself watching something called The Chew for Christ’s sake. The Chew? What in the hell was Frons thinking when he named that show? Oh, I have no doubt Frons named the show, probably thought it would be cute for the View women to say coming up in an hour The Chew. Please.

he didnt vote them off – but bullshit- he thinks HE’S better than amc if he’s taking that on. The frigging chew. I wouldnt have touched that time slot with a 10 foot pole. How much exposure does food need anyway

Isn’t there a channel for this kind of crap called the Food Network? Who the hell is this asshole? Just looking at his fugly mug makes me lose my appetite.

To be fair, he is an extremely successful and well known restaurateur. I know I have always wanted to try his New York restaurant, Babbo. Do I know for a fact that his show will be thrilling? No. But I think it is a little unfair to say his show will be crap just because he isn’t as hot as the guy that plays griffin on AMC.

So at 1:00 when all my children airs in NY instead of looking at how beautiful Erica looks or how nice and cozy Angies apartment looks and so on and so forth, Frons thinks we especially the women want to watch someone cooking over a hot stove using tons of butter. Thats relaxing. Just shoot me now.

I have no intention of watching The Spew or The Screw..both better names than what they’ve named them. If I wanted to watch a talk show about food, don’t you think that I’d watch, oh…I don’t know…The Food Network or The Cooking Channel?! You didn’t vote them out…hmmm, I beg to differ. Not us fans who decided that you and Symon don’t get enough face time on Iron Chef America, not us fans who booted Symon off of Dinner Impossible because they chose to rehire the original guy…who lied about his background as a chef. Sorry you’re not getting enough shows on PBS with a real “foodie” like Gweneth Paltrow…who does microbiotic diets.

I can’t wait for this show to fail…and I might have to add yet a few more shows and networks to avoid watching…like Food Network.

OMG not Mario Batali. He’s a speed talker and loves to talk about Italian food and the region in Italy where the foods are from……zzzzzzz sheesh I’m falling asleep writing this. Couldn’t they find a more interesting chef then him. He had a show on the Food Network and it was awful. He may be a great chef but he looks and sounds unappealing. I won’t be watching.

If I wanted to watch a show about food I would watch the Food Network. There are a whole lot of soap fans who are not going to be watching. Kind of like “The Talk” and ‘Let’s Make a Deal”. I refuse to watch stupid show that replace soaps.

Like the others said, dont give a fuck and his seemingly cavalier attitude doesn’t help. “It wasn’t like I voted ‘em out’. Like I said about Kim K. some people just shouldn’t talk. I don’t care for him anyway. I actually watch the Food Network and there are many of those folks that I happily do not watch. He’s one of them. Always seems sumg on Iron Chef. I NEVER get through the show if he is on. And I damn for sure won’t be catching his ass on ABC!

    Chew THIS!
Well I’m voting you out!

    Don’t f*ck with soap fans!!
ITA because even if they loved your cooking show they wouldn’t watch because you are in the place of their beloved AMC– and that’s reason enough not to watch.

Thing is I’ve watched mario on the cooking channel but on ABC daily at 1pm IDK if that will ever fly–but probably not.

So he (Batali) is not supposed to take a job offer, and the chance to promote his own brand, because AMC has been around for so long? He’s just trying to make money and promote his brand (not to mention maybe his charity work). He’s not trying to stick it to AMC fans.

Looks to me like ABC is rebranding. I doubt they even care if soap-die hards watch or don’t watch. They are looking for other eyeballs. And yes, there are plenty of people who work from home, or stay-at-home moms, or heck, even unemployed people who do not care for soaps, but actually might watch something like this.

I know it sucks that these shows were cancelled, and I am not trying to be insensitive, but was ABC supposed to air these shows forever, in spite of falling ratings, higher production costs and, let’s be honest, mostly negative critical response (at least in reference to AMC)?

To be fair, beansmorgan, I don’t give a shit who he is nor do I care. I don’t live in NYC, I’m not going to his restaurant — all I know is that he is replacing an American institution. Unless he puts Brian Frons’ scrotum in a deep fryer, I won’t be watching. By the way, f**k fairness. What’s fair about what’s happening to these soaps? Fair ain’t gotta damn thing to do with it.

Well I for one can say this is something I won’t be watching. Like many have said if I wanted to watch a cooking show, I’d turn on the cooking channel. His cavalier attitude just cemented for me and I think probably alot of upset soap fans that he won’t be getting our views, so he can chew on that. I also don’t plan on watching the other lame show they are planning either. I think ABC is sorely mistaken if they think a mass amount of people are seriously going to watch this.

I just watched the video on TMZ and the camera man said “You know, I never miss my soaps” and this Mario guy said with a smile on his face “Yeah, well your going to be missing them now”

    Jackass!!

    Yeah, hope your show fails.

the fact that a cooking and a weight lose shows are replacing soaps really speaks volumes on what they believe their target demographic looks or so be like.

may all these shows fail, because lord knows we have way too many reality shows.

  18. Profile photo of alstonboy4315

I refuse to watch this BULLDOOKIE!! If I want to watch a cooking show, I can turn on Rachael Ray. And if I want to watch a show about weight loss, I can always watch “The Biggest Loser.”

I hope both of these shows crash and burn!! And that’s my FINAL answer!!!

By the way, who is this Mario Batali guy?? I’ve never heard of him. And NO I don’t even feel like Googling him!!

I know that TECHNICALLY I shouldn’t take my frustrations out on him or anyone who produces or stars in these new shows, but I don’t feel like being an adult right now! Deal with it!!!

    (licks out tongue!) :p :p :p :p :p

Lol, he is not the guy we should be going after, it should be Anne Sweeney, Brian Frons and company for the destruction of aBc soaps, not Mario. I will not be watching, but ABC will be so much in trouble with the cancellation of soaps.

You are absolutely right…Mario is of course entitled to earn his money in whatever legal way he sees fit. The big outcry from fans here on this board and anyone else who say or read about his remarks is about his smugness and total insensitivity about hundreds of people losing their jobs to make room for yet another food show when he himself already has at least 2 at other networks.
He made snarky, azzhat remarks and things like that turn people off…people who can take their viewership, and their money, in other directions. Maybe he needs to STHU and have said something like “while I am excited about my new venture, I of course send my best wished to all those people, especially the NYers, who have lost their jobs.” But he didn’t…so he can take his ridiculous orange clogs and pray for someone to watch the “Spew and Screw”

OMG…watch, Frons will try to add VMG and R. Budig to this show and make it all about them…then Mario will be whistling a different aria!!

Good Grief! If this is the best ABC has to offer (The Chew, The Revolution) I hate to see what ABC TURNED DOWN ! ! !

What did ABC pass up ?
A new version of The Dating Game hosted by Glenn Beck?
A Health & Lifestyle Show starring Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan ?
A modified version of the game show $50 Billion Dollar Pyramid Scheme hosted by Bernie Madoff ?

Good luck ABC, you’re gonna need it !

Speaking for me, it is high time that everyone vow…Since ABC screwed we, the soap fans, then we will screw ABC right where it hurts. In the pocketbook. At every possible turn.

It’s the only weapon we have.

That means…Don’t watch ABC(or anything in its portfolio). For ANYTHING. As an example: Like Desperate Housewives? Too bad. Find another fix. (And that extends to DVD box sets.)

Sports fans…turn off ESPN. (That’s not too hard, as ESPN tards everything it touches.)

Looking to vacation at a Disney resort? Find somewhere else to take the family.

Like I want to see that face on my TV screen????? I don’t think so. Who wants to watch some fat man prance around in his bright orange crocs, not this kid. I know that was not a kind remark, but I am not in a very kind mood right now.

beansmorgans, I hope you and the other six viewers enjoy the new noontime crapfest — but this website is called Daytime Confidential, not Kitchen Confidential. The vast majority of people who view and comment here love soaps, not cooking shows.

Look it might be unpopular here and everyone is angry at Brian Frons for cancelling these shows but really it isn’t Mario Batali’s fault. He is a nice man who knows Italian cooking like an encyclopedia. He knows not only everything about italian food but what town it came from what cheeze and wine is made in that town that compliments the dinner and probably the name of the little old lady that created the dish. He is a bit eccentric but very nice and he also has recently been incorporating other kinds of international foods to his repetoir. Really all the hosts on this show are extremely nice people and each bring a different style with them. I am not saying watch or don’t watch this show but in reality noone got mad at Robin Strasser when she took over the role of Dorian. Did anyone ever turn down a job because someone got fired? Especially someone you didn’t even know?
People watched and loved Passions even though Another World got cancelled to make way for it. (not me though I did manage to boycott the entire run of the series).

I felt exactly the very same way as you – until…I triple dog dare all to GOOGLE: “Batali + lawsuits” and check out the many character references found their for this rank arrogant, rude, crude, socially unacceptable, and obese poster doughboy for “The Spew”. And then ask yourself the question: Who at Disney/ABC responsibly carried out their due diligence, as a corporation, in checking this individual, thoroughly, out beforehand? WHERE IS THE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY OF ABC/DISNEY AND ITS “FAMILY VALUES” TO PUT SOMEONE UP – OF THIS NATURE– GIVEN SUCH SERIOUS AND EXTENSIVE CHARGES BROUGHT AGAINST HIM – IN MULTIPLE COURTS INCLUDING FEDERAL COURTS, INVOLVING HIS MULTIPLE ESTABLISHMENTS’ EMPLOYEES ON BOTH COASTS???!!! IT BOGGLES THE MIND TO MAKE ONE WONDER WHAT, IF ANYTHING – IS IN THE DRINKING WATER IN BURBANK,CALIFORNIA, THAT SR. DISNEY/ABC EXECS WOULD HAVE PASSED ON THIS — BEYOND SCANDALOUS SITUATION, ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS TO HAVE ADVANCED THIS MAN AS A CO-TALK SHOW HOST ON NATIONWIDE TELEVISION IS BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS AND GROSSLY IRRESPONSIBLE NETWORK CONDUCT REFLECTING SERIOUSLY SKEWED AND FLAWED JUDGMENT OF CHARACTER, TO SAY THE VERY LEAST. SHAME ON DISNEY AND SHAME ON ABC. SCREW “THE SPEW” AND DAMN “THE DEVOLUTION”! “THE SPEW” IS FOR GORGEING AND “THE DEVOLUTION” IS FOR PURGING…EWWW.
